With the October 31 deadline looming, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has just a matter of weeks to come up with a deal for the UK to leave the EU. It’s been over three years since the referendum took place and ongoing negotiations have left many frustrated. Now, Question Time host Fiona Bruce has opened up on tense debates on the show as the public wait to find out if the country will leave with a No-Deal.

Speaking to Radio Times about the current political climate, Fiona exclaimed: “Brexit can tend to be a dialogue of the deaf.

“On Question Time I’ve noticed great anger from the audience.

“When we discuss Brexit, emotions range from white-hot fury to cold, grey apathy.

“As soon as we move off Brexit, debate is much more nuanced and considered.”

Despite the many changes and renegotiations, Fiona insisted she found Brexit “riveting”.

While her friends find it “tiring,” the presenter loves the “twists I could never foresee”.

However, she admitted she spends a lot of time “swotting” to stay up to date.

“So much of Brexit has come bogged down in process, and some people love to get right down into the weeds of all that. But that way lies madness.”

The presenter said she tries to focus on something other than politics after hosting the BBC One show.

Instead of going over what was said, she sits down to watch “something that’s a million miles away from all that”.

Fiona credits Poldark, Call the Midwife and Derry Girls as the shows able to help her relax.

The data in question includes email addresses, private correspondence, passwords, phone numbers, work emails and photos, among other information, and those affected reportedly include journalists and celebrities as well as politicians. According to multiple reports, the data was leaked from the Twitter account @_0rbit — which has since been suspended — and the account began sharing the stolen information in December.

While some communications belonging to German President Angela Merkel were found among the documents, a government spokesperson told The Guardian that no sensitive information linked to Merkel had been leaked. So far, it’s unclear who was behind the incident. Victims appear to include politicians belonging to every major German party except for the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

Security researchers have noted that the information included in the leak was not only large-scale and detailed, but also extensively spread out across a number of sites and mirror links. “Way too much effort went into ensuring that this data would be really hard to take down,” tweeted one researcher.

It’s also unknown just how those behind the leak obtained the information, but Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security released a statement saying there’s no evidence yet of a successful cyberattack on government networks. “After an initial analysis much evidence points towards the data being obtained through the improper use of login details to cloud services, email accounts or social networks,” the interior minister, Horst Seehofer, said in a statement, according to The Guardian. “Currently nothing points towards the system of the parliament or government having been compromised.”

A Twitter spokesperson told Gizmodo that the company took action against the @_0rbit account after it was brought to Twitter’s attention. “Posting a person’s private information without their express permission is a direct violation of the Twitter rules,” they said. “We also recently updated our rules to prohibit the distribution of any hacked material that contains private information, trade secrets or could put people in harm’s way.”

App flaw let anyone access UK Conservative politicians’ data https://briefnews.eu/app-flaw-let-anyone-access-uk-conservative-politicians-data/ https://briefnews.eu/app-flaw-let-anyone-access-uk-conservative-politicians-data/#respond Sun, 30 Sep 2018 08:55:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/app-flaw-let-anyone-access-uk-conservative-politicians-data/

The UK Conservative party is learning a hard lesson about the importance of basic security measures in mobile apps. Users have discovered that you could log into the party’s conference app using only an attendee’s email address, providing access to all kinds of sensitive data. And when many of the conference participants are politicians who registered with their email addresses at Parliament… you can guess what happened next.

Users entered the email addresses of major politicians, including Michael Gove and Boris Johnson, and promptly discovered info like mobile phone numbers. In some cases, people started messing with that data. One person changed Johnson’s photo to a porn image, while another altered Gove’s portrait to that of his former boss Rupert Murdoch. It was harder to obtain info for people who weren’t politicians, but they too were vulnerable if you could obtain their email addresses.

CrowdComms, the Australian company behind the app, removed the login feature through an update to curb further abuse. The Conservatives, meanwhile, said they were “investigating the issue further.” While it’s not certain just who decided on the password-free sign-ins, many have criticized the party for a lack of oversight that might have caught such a glaring oversight before the app went live. This was easily avoidable, and may have had lasting consequences beyond the conference.

Politicians and their peccadillos https://briefnews.eu/politicians-and-their-peccadillos/ https://briefnews.eu/politicians-and-their-peccadillos/#respond Thu, 13 Sep 2018 05:32:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/politicians-and-their-peccadillos/

Apparently this latest dalliance, with a woman described as “a young stunning blonde Tory aide” was in full swing in July when he was trashing Theresa May’s Chequers Brexit proposals. He described them as a polished turd – some might think it takes one to know one.

Others will simply shrug, scowl or smile and say: “Boris is Boris.” Boris – bonking is one of his things, everybody knows that. Nothing unusual about a politician being discovered in an extra marital but has an affair ever before been made public as preparation for a party leadership bid? That’s what it’s all about. Will it do him any harm? Not among his admirers.

He lightens their day. He may not be good on detail or even facts, honesty may not be his strong suit but he can electrify a room (or a zip wire). Being Boris is the polar opposite of being Theresa and on a different planet from being Philip Hammond.

Sex scandals have caused some mighty falls. In the late 19th century the career of Sir Charles Dilke, tipped as a future Liberal prime minister, was destroyed when it emerged that he was the lover of his brother’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law. That’s a mother and daughter. Alan Clark, a minister under Margaret Thatcher, went one better.

He had affairs with a married mother and two daughters but nobody knew and so it did him no harm at all. It just boosted the sales of his unputdownable diaries. In modern times John Profumo, secretary of state for war in Harold Macmillan’s cabinet, was lust’s most notable political casualty.

His early-1960s affair with Christine Keeler finished him, damaged her and killed off the government. He spent the next decades quietly doing charity work in London’s East End. For this he was awarded a CBE and at Lady Thatcher’s 70th birthday dinner he sat next to the Queen. Boris certainly wouldn’t settle for that, nor will he have to.

Profumo had to resign because he lied to Parliament about his affair. Boris was sacked as shadow arts minister in 2004 for lying to the public and Michael Howard, the Conservative leader. It hardly set him back at all.

These days, even if it makes headlines, straying often does no career damage, unless it seems cruel, involves breaking the law or there’s a spouse or lover who refuses to play the game, or can’t.

The revelation that John Prescott had a two-year affair with his secretary would have been cause for nothing more than surprise and mirth were it not for sympathy for Pauline, his wife of more than 40 years, a popular woman, the closest Labour got to an Elizabeth Taylor lookalike. She was devastated by the news. Her husband said he would have to resign.

“I was having a lovely new loo put in my hall,” she said, “John said I’d have to cancel it but I didn’t.” She received heaps of advice from strangers. “There were a lot of very bitter women writing,” she said.

“And I thought I can go one of two ways. Either I can be bitter and cloud my very existence or I can move on.”

So their lives moved on together. In 1997 Margaret, the doctor wife of Robin Cook, Tony Blair’s foreign secretary, was cast aside in the most brutal circumstances.

They were at Heathrow about to leave for Boston when Blair’s press secretary Alastair Campbell phoned to say that a Sunday newspaper was about to reveal Cook’s affair with his Commons secretary Gaynor Regan and that he had to make a decision there and then.

She made no judgments about private lives and might still have appointed him had the course of untrue love run smooth

David Robson

He ended the marriage in the airport’s VIP lounge. Blair released a message offering sympathy to all concerned and saying that it didn’t affect Cook’s capacity do his job. He resigned more than five years later in protest at the Iraq war.

Cecil Parkinson was the handsome, married, self-made man Thatcher wanted to make foreign secretary. In 1983 he warned her that his former secretary Sara Keays was pregnant with his child.

The prime minister was not fazed. She made no judgments about private lives and might still have appointed him had the course of untrue love run smooth.

The daughter was born with serious learning diffi culties. Keays was furious that he had discarded her to stay with his wife and she knew how to stick up for herself. Parkinson gave financial support but never saw the child. His career never reached the heights.

For years, often at Conservative Party conference time, Keays, not a woman to be crossed, would make herself felt. She was portrayed as a harridan.

Parkinson had many sympathisers. Conservative minister Edwina Currie wrote: “I feel very, very sorry for Cecil and his family. Most of my thoughts on Sara Keays are unprintable.

Perhaps the most polite thing to say is she’s a right cow.” Currie, another disappointed woman not to be crossed, was unkind enough to reveal, nearly 20 years after the event, her four-year affair with John Major in the early 1980s.

JOHN

SCANDAL: John Profumo and his wife Valerie, left (Image: SYDNEY O’MEARA/GETTY)

According to her he wore blue underpants and was an accomplished lover. This was the man who as prime minister in 1993 made the call to go “back to basics” (though he didn’t mean anything as basic as Ms Currie).

When Currie’s revelations appeared, Mary Archer, fragrant scientist wife of politician/novelist Jeffrey, said: “I am a little surprised, not at Mrs Currie’s indiscretion but at a temporary lapse in John Major’s taste.”

What about Mary’s own taste? She has been married since 1966 to man who was the very definition of a bounder, a lifelong stranger to truth who not only paid a prostitute for sex but lied about it in court and was in 2001 sent to jail for perjury and perverting the course of justice. Archer at least has a pile of bestselling books to his name.

The only thing David Mellor will be remembered for is wearing a Chelsea football shirt when he was in bed with actress Antonia de Sancha – except that he didn’t. That was a story made up by press agent Max Clifford.

He hadn’t even always been a Chelsea man, he used to support Fulham. Bad to be unfaithful to your wife but unfaithful to your football team is unforgivable. The rumour he became a Chelsea fan because John Major was can’t be true, can it?

The Mellors divorced two years after the scandal. As for the Liberals – we can’t deal with Jeremy Thorpe’s story here.

That needs a book and a TV series. Paddy Ashdown had his “Paddy Pantsdown” moment but it passed, his wife forgave him and 25 years on they are still together.

But here’s a tip for everyone: don’t be unfaithful to your wife when you’ve made her tell the police she was driving when you were.

Chris Huhne, a minister in the David CameronNick Clegg coalition, did and both he and his wife ended up in jail. Jonathan Aitken, a Conservative government minister in the 1990s, was known as the Commons Casanova but what brought him down was perjury.

In prison he found God, became a devout Christian and was recently ordained a Church of England deacon.

Perhaps he could commend that path to a fellow old Etonian. Boris would make a very jolly clergyman. He could bring a whole new meaning to the sermon on the mount.

‘Dancing diplomacy’: 7 times politicians cut loose and (tried to) sway to the rhythm https://briefnews.eu/dancing-diplomacy-7-times-politicians-cut-loose-and-tried-to-sway-to-the-rhythm/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-diplomacy-7-times-politicians-cut-loose-and-tried-to-sway-to-the-rhythm/#respond Sat, 01 Sep 2018 18:14:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-diplomacy-7-times-politicians-cut-loose-and-tried-to-sway-to-the-rhythm/

Austria’s foreign minister has hailed the merits of “dancing diplomacy,” less than two weeks after she swayed with Vladimir Putin at her wedding – but she’s not the only politician known to put on her dancing shoes.

“Diplomacy is about much more than presenting each other with policy notes… a dance doesn’t have any political implications, whether I dance with [British Foreign Secretary] Jeremy [Hunt] or anyone else,” Karin Kneissl said at a press conference on Friday, as quoted by AFP.

While her comments referenced a night of samba and bossa nova with her British, Greek, Polish, and Romanian counterparts at an EU foreign ministers’ meeting on Thursday, “dancing diplomacy” is also something that she recently practiced at her own wedding, sharing a dance with Putin during the celebration.

But Kneissl isn’t the only politician to enjoy a good boogie. Here are six times that politicians lightened up and let themselves get lost in the music.

1. Theresa May’s ‘robotic’ African dance

When British Prime Minister Theresa May visited a school in South Africa last week, she received an A+ in awkwardness and a D- in dancing – and Twitter didn’t hold back in letting her know that.

Just days later, when May visited Kenya and met with a group of scouts, she tried her darnedest to loosen up and share a dance with the young men. The result was awkward, to say the least.

2. Obama did it better

May wasn’t the first head of state to boogie in Kenya – but former US president Barack Obama was a bit looser and more natural when he hit the dance floor.

3. BoJo twirled by Peruvian teacher

Before he resigned as British foreign secretary, Boris Johnson took a little trip to Peru, dancing with a school teacher and even allowing her to twirl him. In true BoJo fashion, he wasn’t the most graceful.

4. Trudeau forgets he’s Canadian for a minute

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was mocked tirelessly throughout his February trip to India, from his bright outfits to his spontaneous decision to attempt to dance the Bhangra on stage. The reaction wasn’t purely Canadian, as some Indians weren’t too impressed with Trudeau’s apparent obsession with Bollywood stereotypes.

5. Trump brings new meaning to ‘awkward’

When US President Donald Trump visited Saudi Arabia, he awkwardly took part in a welcoming sword dance. The tradition, which stems from ancient tribal war customs, fittingly came in the wake of a multi-billion-dollar arms deal signed in Riyadh.

6. Hillary Clinton dances away her campaign

When Hillary Clinton was campaigning in New York, she tried to show her lighter side by dancing with local politicians on stage. It was weird.

7. Zakharova boogies to Serbian trumpets

Trumpet music may not be the most popular in the mainstream music scene, but Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova seemed to enjoy the sound at a festival in Serbia, showing off some of her dance moves.

But that was no match for Zakharova’s performance in 2016, when she pulled off her own rendition of the traditional Kalinka dance at the Russia-ASEAN summit in Sochi. The official, who was fulfilling her bet, sparked a minor controversy when dance experts said it didn’t look like Kalinka at all.

When asked about Zakharova’s performance, her boss – Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov – said he’s “not a dancer” himself. But that didn’t stop him from cheekily promising to teach Rex Tillerson to dance the tango after the former US secretary of state said there was no point dancing the diplomatic tango with Lavrov, as his sole choreographer was Vladimir Putin. He later stated that the US chose an “individual breakdance” over a paired tango.

So, the next time you think politics is all about draft legislation and contentious elections, just remind yourself that politicians do have a lighter, human side – even if it turns out to be clumsy and cringeworthy.

‘Hero & patriot representing our best ideals’: US politicians mourn McCain’s passing https://briefnews.eu/hero-patriot-representing-our-best-ideals-us-politicians-mourn-mccains-passing/ https://briefnews.eu/hero-patriot-representing-our-best-ideals-us-politicians-mourn-mccains-passing/#respond Sun, 26 Aug 2018 02:44:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hero-patriot-representing-our-best-ideals-us-politicians-mourn-mccains-passing/

Despite being pre-emptively ‘disinvited’ by McCain from his funeral, Donald Trump has expressed his condolences, joining a long list of US politicians praising the late John McCain’s patriotism, heroism and high morals.

“Our hearts and prayers are with you!” Trump tweeted after McCain’s family announced the senator’s death. Recalling John McCain’s six-decade service to the nation, many US politicians called the Republican a true “patriot” and a “war hero.” Others noted the 81-year-olds “dignity” and “values” that were cherished by all Americans.

“We have lost a man who steadfastly represented the best ideals of our country,” Defense Secretary James Mattis said in a statement.

Sen. Bernie Sanders also called McCain his “friend” and an “American” hero”, noting the politician’s “decency and honor.” “He will be missed not just in the U.S. Senate but by all Americans who respect integrity and independence,” the Vermont senator said.

Republican Party chair Ronna McDaniel noted that McCain was a strong supporter of American leadership in the world, as well as a “tireless champion of our nation’s troops and veterans.”

The US lost “one its most distinguished men of gallantry,” former National Security Advisor Colin Powell noted. The retired four-star general and a long time friend of the Senator highlighted McCain’s toughness, demonstrated when he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

While the political community paid its respect to the 36-year veteran of Capitol Hill, those closest to Sen. McCain shared their personal sadness.

“My heart is broken,” his wife Cindy said. “I am so lucky to have lived the adventure of loving this incredible man for 38 years. He passed the way he lived, on his own terms, surrounded by the people he loved, in the place he loved best.”

“My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can,” his daughter Meghan said, in a long, heartfelt statement. “I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning…he showed me what it is to be a man.”

  • Sir Vince Cable, leader of the Liberal Democrats, has been “sounding out” MPs from other parties about potentially forming an alliance.
  • However, the Lib Dems have major reforms planned and are unlikely to give up on the party anytime soon.

LONDON —  Politicians from across the political spectrum have been holding secret talks about forging a new centrist political movement, well-placed sources from all the major parties have told Business Insider.

UK politicians blame Facebook for the rise of fake news https://briefnews.eu/uk-politicians-blame-facebook-for-the-rise-of-fake-news/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-politicians-blame-facebook-for-the-rise-of-fake-news/#respond Mon, 30 Jul 2018 12:51:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-politicians-blame-facebook-for-the-rise-of-fake-news/

After an 18 month investigation, the UK parliament has issued a scathing report on the handling of fake news and illegal election ads by tech companies, especially Facebook. The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) committee said Facebook “obfuscated” information and refused to probe potential Russian abuse until forced to by the US Senate. Worst of all, the social network helped spread disinformation and hatred against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar. “Facebook is releasing a product that is dangerous to consumers and deeply unethical,” the report states.

The first part of the report details Facebook’s failings and proposes measures that would result in drastic changes at the social network. For one, it recommends criminal prosecution against Facebook if it fails to act against harmful and illegal content.

It also recommends bans on micro-targeted political ads, the creation of a new designation for Facebook that’s somewhere in between platform and publisher, new powers for the UK Electoral Commission to combat fake news on social media, and a comprehensive overhaul of election advertising legislation. Finally, it issued another demand that Mark Zuckerberg “come to the committee to answer questions to which Facebook has not responded adequately to date.”

A professional global Code of Ethics should be developed by tech companies, in collaboration with this and other governments, academics, and interested parties, including the World Summit on Information Society, to set down in writing what is and what is not acceptable by users on social media, with possible liabilities for companies and for individuals working for those companies, including those technical engineers involved in creating the software for the companies.

The committee also expressed concern about Cambridge Analytica, specifically that it had worked for the UK government with a “secret clearance.” It also points out that the firm had ties with a Malta-based company that was essentially selling passports to Malta (and by extension to Europe). It notes that investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, assassinated by a car bomb last year, was investigating that very passport scheme.

Finally, the DCMS urged an investigation into Russia’s ties to disinformation on social media. Committee chair Damian Collins said that early inquiries into Russian disinformation on Facebook soon led to questions about interference in Brexit and other UK elections. “And we noticed an aggressive campaign against us even asking these questions. It underlined the need to persist, which we have done,” he told the Observer.

It said that the millionaire backer of Leave.EU had ties to Russian companies and officials, and urged the National Crime Agency (NCA) to follow the money used that paid for ads on Facebook and other sites. It also criticized statements by Facebook’s UK Policy Director Simon Milner that the company wasn’t aware of Russian interference in the Brexit referendum. “We deem Mr. Milner’s comments to the Committee to have been disingenuous and typical of Facebook’s handling of our questions,” the report states.

The DCMS group worked together with the Senate Intelligence Committee in Washington DC, which will launch its own hearing on foreign interference on social media. Meanwhile, the UK government is expected to propose new regulations for tech companies later this year, especially around election advertising. If they implement new rules proposed by the committee, “social medial companies can [no longer] hide behind the claim of being merely a ‘platform,'” the report states.

Update: Facebook has responded to the DCMS committees report with the following comment:

The Committee has raised some important issues and we were pleased to be able to contribute to their work.

We share their goal of ensuring that political advertising is fair and transparent and agree that electoral rule changes are needed. We have already made all advertising on Facebook more transparent. We provide more information on the Pages behind any ad and you can now see all the ads any Facebook Page is running, even if they are not targeted at you. We are working on ways to authenticate and label political ads in the UK and create an archive of those ads that anyone can search. We will work closely with the UK Government and Electoral Commission as we develop these new transparency tools.

We’re also investing heavily in both people and technology to keep bad content off our services. We took down 2.5 million pieces of hate speech and disabled 583 million fake accounts globally in the first quarter of 2018 — much of it before anyone needed to report this to Facebook. By using technology like machine learning, artificial intelligence and computer vision, we can detect more bad content and take action more quickly.
