Leon McCarron

Why do explorers still take risks to reach the Poles, even when most ‘firsts’ have been claimed and records broken? Avid Pole-seeker and featured contributor Leon McCarron explains.

When I was 10, I wanted to go to the South Pole. When I was 15, I decided that I’d like to go to the North Pole too. As yet, I haven’t done either. It’s taken me 31 years to even make it to the Arctic. While it’s not quite to the top of the planet, this year, I journey further north than ever before.

From Longyearbyen, the main town on the biggest island of the Svalbard archipelago, I step onto a boat and sail west out of the ice fjord towards open water, then north through a channel with Spitsbergen island on one side and Prince Charles Foreland on the other.

I’m traveling with a film crew from Northern Ireland, and we’re here to follow in the footsteps of Lord Dufferin who, in the 1850s, had sailed from Scotland to Svalbard. He was an early adventure tourist rather than an explorer, but his journey was nevertheless one of guts and gall and sheer bloody-mindedness; and indeed, one driven by the desire to see the great empty wildernesses that lie at the ends of the world.

Icebergs the size of buses float past our small sailboat as we roar north with the wind. We spent nights anchored in the shelter of small, jutting peninsulas, and wander on shore in the midnight sun to admire—from a safe distance—the writhing, tusked forms within a huddle of walruses (and yes, that is the correct collective noun).

Finally, we reach the point we’d been aiming for—English Bay, where Dufferin made landfall—and step off onto the horseshoe-shaped beach. There are very few other humans for hundreds of miles; perhaps just a handful of scientists and trappers. Any that are there are certainly outnumbered by polar bears.

Beyond the hills that enclose us, we catch glimpses into huge, cavernous valleys beyond, stretching out to the white horizon punctuated only by the crisp, reflective glow of glaciers. This is what I’d dreamt of; the privilege of standing somewhere so pristine.

Today too, tragedy still strikes; most recently, the heart-breaking story of Henry Worsley’s death during his attempt to become the first person to cross Antarctica solo and unaided. So why do explorers still put themselves at such risk, when surely all firsts have been claimed and records broken?

Much of it seems to lie in the simple purity of the challenge. Scott talked of the appeal of a place that had “hitherto been untrodden by human feet, unseen by human eyes.” Even today, polar regions can still feel as though they’re untouched by the human hand. As a more general description, however, perhaps it is, as the Norwegian explorer Fridtjof Nansen describes, a visceral, internal trial. He asks the rhetorical question:

“Why [do we do it]? On account of the great geographical discoveries, the important scientific results? Oh no; that will come later, for the few specialists. This is something all can understand. A victory of human mind and human strength over the dominion and powers of Nature; a deed that lifts us above the great monotony of daily life; a view over shining plains, with lofty mountains against the cold blue sky, and lands covered by ice-sheets of inconceivable extent … the triumph of the living over the stiffened realm of death.”

On my journey to the Arctic, we share none of the trials nor tribulations of the great explorers, and yet on the homeward journey the weather turns and we’re left for a few days at the mercy of a storm. Our boat bounces around on ‘old sea,’ as the skipper calls it—water still shaking from previous tumultuous weather—and we experience just a small taste of that helplessness when faced with the raw power of the far north.

The hero of my youth, Ernest Shackleton, took it upon himself to outline the skills a polar explorer must have, and perhaps that’s as good an answer to the question as any. The first, he says, is a requirement of bring an optimist. Second: “patience; third, physical endurance; fourth, idealism; fifth and last, courage.”

He, and those mentioned above had these traits in spades, as did (and do) so many others. We should be grateful for their spirit and stories. I know I am.

‘It was ethnic cleansing’: Polish president says Kiev must admit to massacre of Poles in WWII https://briefnews.eu/it-was-ethnic-cleansing-polish-president-says-kiev-must-admit-to-massacre-of-poles-in-wwii/ https://briefnews.eu/it-was-ethnic-cleansing-polish-president-says-kiev-must-admit-to-massacre-of-poles-in-wwii/#respond Mon, 09 Jul 2018 09:58:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/it-was-ethnic-cleansing-polish-president-says-kiev-must-admit-to-massacre-of-poles-in-wwii/ Kiev must acknowledge the mass killing of Poles by Ukrainian nationalists in the 1940s for what it is – ethnic cleansing – Polish President Andrzej Duda said after reportedly snubbing an invitation for a joint commemoration.

On Sunday, Duda visited Ukraine to mark the 75th anniversary of the Volhynia massacres, the mass killing of civilians by radical Ukrainian nationalists in what is now western Ukraine. The brutal massacres carried out by the UPA, the militant wing of Stepan Bandera’s Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), was part of a larger campaign of ethnic cleansing by Nazi Germany and its allies, but is considered a distinct episode of Ukrainian-Polish ethnic conflict by many historians.

“This day is a sad one for many Polish families, who in 1942-1944 lost their loved ones in Volhynia. It is estimated that 100,000 Poles were murdered here,” Duda said during a visit to Ukraine. “Not soldiers, but ordinary people. Farmers, who cultivated the land, entire families, women, children and elderly people.”

Duda said the killings were “simple ethnic cleansing” ordered by the OUN and aimed at ridding the region of Poles, and that Ukraine has to admit this truth for Ukrainian-Polish relations to move forward.

The difference of opinion on wartime violence is a thorny issue for Warsaw and Kiev. Many in modern Ukraine consider Stepan Bandera a national hero and tend to overlook the atrocities committed by Ukrainian nationalists.

The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance insists that the killings in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia were a tragic, though justifiable, response to the persecution of Ukrainians by the Poles, which was not unlike the killings of Ukrainians by Polish militias during the war.

Consistent with this view, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko this weekend traveled to Poland to take part in the opening of a memorial to the victims of the March 1944 Sahryn massacre, which was committed by Polish militias, including the Armia Krajowa insurgency force and their allies from the Bataliony Chlopskie.

“In the memory of innocent victims of Sahryn I am calling on all of you, Ukrainians and Poles, for Christian forgiveness. Mutual forgiveness and not revenge is what innocent victims of fratricidal conflicts between our people are calling for from heavens,” Poroshenko said.

Duda also spoke of forgiveness and reconciliation, but noted that the difference in the number of victims on the Polish and Ukrainian sides during the conflict was “glaring.” He said an estimated 5,000 civilians were killed by Polish militias in retaliation for the actions of the Ukrainian nationalists.

As the anniversary of the tragedy was drawing near, Ukraine sought to negotiate a joint commemoration with Poland, which rejected the offer, Ukrainian media reported last week citing diplomatic sources.

Tensions between Kiev and Warsaw have been rising over the past several years, as nationalist sentiments have grown in both nations. The escalation has been marked by several incidents on both sides of the border, including the vandalization of monuments, hostile chants during demonstrations, and in one case a rocket attack on a Polish consulate in Ukraine, which fortunately did not hurt anyone.

Alysha Newman excited to test new poles vs. elite field at Prefontaine Classic https://briefnews.eu/alysha-newman-excited-to-test-new-poles-vs-elite-field-at-prefontaine-classic/ https://briefnews.eu/alysha-newman-excited-to-test-new-poles-vs-elite-field-at-prefontaine-classic/#respond Wed, 23 May 2018 10:45:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alysha-newman-excited-to-test-new-poles-vs-elite-field-at-prefontaine-classic/ Pole vaulter Alysha Newman wonders if having her equipment destroyed during a recent Air Canada flight followed by a strong performance in Qatar on little sleep and with borrowed poles has made her a more effective athlete.

"It might have made me a better athlete knowing I was able to handle the adversity and perform decently," the London, Ont., native told CBC Sports earlier this week before boarding a flight to Oregon ahead of the 44th Prefontaine Classic on Saturday (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 4 p.m. ET). "Like I tell everybody, the equipment doesn't make the athlete, the athlete makes the athlete."

On May 4, Newman used poles from a local club in Doha to place seventh at the season-opening Diamond League meet with a clearance of 4.54 metres, one day after eight of her $ 1,000 poles were snapped in transit. She remembers asking her fellow competitors to examine the loaned poles to make sure they bent properly and being mindful of not risking injury at the beginning of a new season.

Canadian pole vaulter Alysha Newman is thrilled after getting eight new poles. She anticipates feeling more comfortable after competing at the Prefontaine Classic on Saturday, but adds she won't be on all of them until later in the Diamond League track and field season. (Anson Henry/CBC Sports)

"I probably slept one or two hours the night before the competition," she said. "I had some mental problems on the [pole vault] runway earlier this season with getting on bigger poles and getting comfortable. I finally felt comfortable after the Commonwealth Games [in April] and then this happened.

"I guess God's testing me this year, making me as strong as possible for world championships [next year] and the [2020 Tokyo] Olympics."

Last Thursday, Newman drove to Buffalo to pick up a new series of poles shipped from the United States, courtesy of Canada's largest airline. They are similar to the Carbon Mystic vaulting pole the 23-year-old had used for five years, so it's now a matter of breaking them in.

Canadian champion pole vaulter Alysha Newman finished in 7th place in the pole vault at the Diamond League meet in Doho, while using borrowed poles. Her own poles arrived broken following her flight to Doha. 0:42

Newman, who noted she "felt good" during the first and only practice with the new poles before Tuesday, isn't worried about a slightly upgraded pole affecting her performance.

"Any pole you keep bending one way," she said, "it's going to develop a soft side and mould to your hands and jumps. I'll probably feel a little more comfortable after this weekend [in Eugene] depending how many jumps I take. There are eight poles so I won't be on all of them until later in the season. It'll take time to get the feeling that they're not new poles anymore."

Newman lashed out at Air Canada shortly after discovering her damaged poles on May 3.

"I've put my trust into you as an airline to get my poles and equipment safely to my competitions, spending thousands of dollars weekly on flights and poles," Newman posted to her Twitter account. "This is how you treat people's stuff? It's a shame, you let me down."

'I should have been more mature'

Air Canada asked her on Twitter to send a booking reference so it could investigate further to which Newman responded: "DM you??? I'll get a sorry and then maybe a 200$ reimbursement? Let's see how you guys fix this! I'm excited to see how your [sic] going to replace $ 10,000, cause that's how much it will cost me."

"The second tweet was a little aggressive and I should have been more mature," Newman said this week. "Every time I go into Toronto, Air Canada knows me and takes care of me. It wasn't Air Canada's fault since they hire companies to handle baggage. It was definitely a lesson learned, and [both sides] learned."

After Newman's poles were broken en route to a competition in Doha, Qatar, CBC Sports' Anson Henry was there when her new poles arrived courtesy of Air Canada. 1:01

Newman anticipated being nervous Saturday on the runway when putting up her hands to see how the new poles bend.

She's also excited about being part of a star-studded field of nine women, including reigning Olympic silver medallist Sandi Morris of the U.S., who won in Doha after clearing 4.84 on her final attempt. Great Britain's Holly Bradshaw (4.64) and American Katie Nageotte in a season-best 4.64 rounded out the podium.

Also competing is Katerina Stefanidi of Greece, the 2016 Olympic champion in Rio, New Zealand's Eliza McCartney and 36-year-old American Jenn Suhr. McCartney jumped 4.70 at the Commonwealth Games to earn a silver medal behind Newman, who matched her personal best of 4.75 to shatter the Games record of 4.62. Last year, the former hurdler and gymnast defeated Suhr, a former Olympic champion and U.S. record holder, at the Adidas Boost Boston Games.

Newman was one of 4 Canadian track and field medallists on day 9 of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. 3:15

"I'm really excited because I feel I've jumped really high. At the beginning of the season I pretty much matched how I finished last year," said Newman, who cleared 4.70 at the world indoor championships in March to improve upon her Canadian record. She jumped 4.75 at the Diamond League final last September in Brussels to match her outdoor national mark.

"I know the [Prefontaine Classic] record is 4.72 so I would be proud to clear that, and being in the top three is always a big thing. To put up high bars and show I deserve to be there would be a building block to my big goal of winning an Olympic gold medal."

Canadian pole vaulter Alysha Newman receives new poles fully paid for by Air Canada https://briefnews.eu/canadian-pole-vaulter-alysha-newman-receives-new-poles-fully-paid-for-by-air-canada/ https://briefnews.eu/canadian-pole-vaulter-alysha-newman-receives-new-poles-fully-paid-for-by-air-canada/#respond Fri, 18 May 2018 17:21:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadian-pole-vaulter-alysha-newman-receives-new-poles-fully-paid-for-by-air-canada/

Canadian pole vaulter Alysha Newman received a brand new set of poles from Air Canada on Thursday morning, two weeks to the day her equipment was destroyed on a flight to Doha for a season-opening Diamond League meet.

Newman said the airline covered the cost of the new set of equipment — which, according to the London, Ont., native cost $ 10,000.

Newman was forced to compete with borrowed poles at the Doha meet, but after clearing 4.54 metres at Qatar Sports Club, the 23-year-old missed all three attempts at 4.64 to finish seventh in a field of nine.

Newman voiced her disappointment on Twitter back on May 3.

But a week after Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said the airline had reached out to Newman and arranged to deliver her new equipment, all seems well.

CBC Sports track and field analyst Anson Henry was with Newman in Bolton, Ont., when she received her poles. He said while Newman was very happy, expectations need to be tempered.

"It's going to take her a little time getting used to them," Henry said.

While Newman competed with borrowed poles delivered to the stadium from a local club in Qatar that are similar to the Carbon Mystic vaulting pole she had used for five years, her coach Doug Wood was back home keeping an eye on his phone while trying to coach at a high school meet in Mississauga, Ont.

"Alysha did great," he told CBC Sports. "She'll probably be frustrated that she didn't jump higher, but I'm really ecstatic. It was a very positive experience after a very negative start. She got three bars [4.24, 4.44, 4.54] on borrowed or loaned poles.

"Alysha is exceptionally talented at making adjustments mid-jump and I respect her competitive spirit. She's a different beast and goes to a place you can only dream of. I've been around her for years and I'm still amazed."

Canadian champion pole vaulter Alysha Newman finished in 7th place in the pole vault at the Diamond League meet in Doho, while using borrowed poles. Her own poles arrived broken following her flight to Doha. 0:42

Newman had been using her old poles for five years, even winning Commonwealth Games gold with them back in April.

Breakthrough 2017 season

Wood said he spoke with Newman about the possibility of withdrawing from the Doha meet. He noted Newman is in a good place mentally, physically and technically and didn't want her to risk injury using different poles.

Newman, who matched her personal best of 4.75 to shatter the Games record of 4.62, forged ahead, first clearing 4.24 in Doha before needing all three tries to clear 4.44 and 4.54.

In her breakthrough 2017 season, Newman vaulted 4.60 or more 10 times and cleared 4.70 at the world indoor track and field championships in March.

Wood said Air Canada has been helpful with Newman in the past and put his faith in the airline doing "what is right" in this case.

"I would like to think [Air Canada] wasn't negligent, that it was an accident," he added.

The five-time All-American won't have to wait long before putting the new poles to good use as she's set to compete in the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. on Friday May 25.

ICYMI, this video made the rounds over the weekend. A traffic camera in Milwaukee captured this video of a pickup hopping up onto Jersey barriers on Interstate 43, mowing down two light poles, then hopping back down again.

The poles fell into oncoming traffic. No one was hurt, but cars were damaged. The driver, to no surprise, has been charged with DUI.

Was it the poles, searing temperature or something else?

Whatever the case, Canadian pole vaulter Alysha Newman didn’t appear herself during Friday’s season-opening Diamond League meet in Doha, Qatar — where the temperature hovered around 34 C — but in fairness to the London, Ont. native, she wasn’t competing with her own poles.

After clearing 4.54 metres at Qatar Sports Club, the 23-year-old missed all three attempts at 4.64 to finish seventh in a field of nine, one day after Newman lashed out at Air Canada from her Twitter account for damaging her equipment.

Canadian champion pole vaulter Alysha Newman finished in 7th place in the pole vault at the Diamond League meet in Doho, while using borrowed poles. Her own poles arrived broken following her flight to Doha.0:42

“All I can say is I did my best !,” Newman posted to her Twitter account. “I’m upset because I felt so good but I’m proud to have set everything aside&was able to pull off 3 bars! I’m going to jump high this season, I feel it in me!There are so many people to thank after this one.”

On Thursday, Newman wrote that her heart was broken along with her poles, ‘thanks to Air Canada.’

Canada’s largest airline asked her on Twitter to send a booking reference so it could investigate further.

Newman tweeted:

In an email to CBC News on Thursday, Air Canada spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick said the airline had reached out to Newman and was arranging to deliver her new equipment.

While Newman competed with borrowed poles delivered to the stadium Friday morning from a local club in Qatar that are similar to the Carbon Mystic vaulting pole she has had for a couple of years, her coach Doug Wood was back home keeping an eye on his phone while trying to coach at a high school meet in Mississauga, Ont.

“Alysha did great,” he told CBC Sports. “She’ll probably be frustrated that she didn’t jump higher, but I’m really ecstatic. It was a very positive experience after a very negative start. She got three bars [4.24, 4.44, 4.54] on borrowed or loaned poles.

“Alysha is exceptionally talented at making adjustments mid-jump and I respect her competitive spirit. She’s a different beast and goes to a place you can only dream of. I’ve been around her for years and I’m still amazed.”

Breakthrough 2017 season

Wood said he spoke with Newman on Friday morning about the possibility of withdrawing from the Doha meet. He noted Newman is in a good place mentally, physically and technically coming off her Commonwealth Games victory last month and didn’t want her to risk injury using different poles.

The Air Canada mishap hurts Newman on several levels.

‘She can’t train, compete unless she borrows poles’

“This goes way beyond just getting some money back for these poles. They’re custom made so they can’t be replaced quickly. Also Alysha was in a groove. She just won the Commonwealth Games tying her Canadian record so early in the season, so she’s on pace to vault even higher later in the season,” said CBC Sports analyst Anson Henry.

“She’s obviously accustomed to the poles as well, and they need to get work in. Plus, we’re talking about multiple poles for various situations and various bar heights. Now she can’t train, she can’t compete unless she borrows the poles, which won’t go over well. So, she can’t make any prize money.

“This could potentially take her out of contention in winning the Diamond League trophy,” added Henry, “which isn’t that far out of her realm of possibilities with the way she’s been vaulting. That’s $ 50,000 US, the Diamond trophy, and probably a lot of contract bonuses she could have gotten from her shoe contract with Nike with her Diamond League finish and world ranking at the end of the season.”

‘I would like to think it was an accident’

Wood said Air Canada has been helpful with Newman in the past and will put his faith in the airline doing “what is right” in this case.

“I would like to think [Air Canada] wasn’t negligent, that it was an accident,” he added.

Reigning Olympic silver medallist Sandi Morris of the United States won Friday’s event after clearing 4.84 on her final attempt, followed by Great Britain’s Holly Bradshaw (4.64) and American Katie Nageotte in a season-best 4.64.

Wood said Newman would return to competition on May 26 at the Prefontaine Classic, a Diamond League meet in Eugene, Ore.

Semenya sets 2 marks in 1,500

Caster Semenya’s quest for a title double in the Diamond League started well when she won the 1,500 metres in a South African record time on Friday.

The two-time Olympic and three-time world champion in the 800 won the 1,500 comfortably by more than a second in 3:59.92, a world-leading and personal-best time.

“It’s always a dream to set the national record and I want to continue to push beyond my personal best,” she said. “We definitely achieved that here.

“I wanted to go faster, but had to slow down a little. I will go back and watch the race and see where we can improve.”

Accused of having unfair advantage

Semenya was racing for the first time since the International Association of Athletics Federations announced the introduction of new regulations, which take effect on Nov. 1, that limit the levels of natural testosterone allowed in the bodies of female athletes competing at distances from 400 to 1,500 metres.

She has been accused by some of having an unfair advantage due to her higher levels of testosterone.

Kenya’s Nelly Jepkosgei was second and set a PB in 4:00.99 while Ethiopia’s Habitam Alemu third (a season-best 4:01.41).

Semenya came to Doha after her 800-1,500 double at the Commonwealth Games in Australia last month, and begins the defence of her 800 Diamond League title at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., on May 26.

Charter Communications has filed a complaint against Verizon, saying the telco violated New York state’s public service law and regulations by denying access to utility poles.

Charter is required to extend its network in New York state to 145,000 homes and businesses by May 2020 under a condition imposed on its purchase of Time Warner Cable, and it was supposed to complete the first 36,250 locations by May of this year. Charter last week was fined by New York regulators for failing to complete the first wave of construction on time, but it largely blamed its failure on Verizon in a complaint filed on Saturday with the New York Public Service Commission.

“In the face of Verizon’s intransigence, Charter has been unable to satisfy the milestones in the Buildout Condition,” Charter said. Charter is the second-largest cable company in the US after Comcast.

An electric utility in Tennessee has accused Comcast of not paying its bills for three years. The utility says it will start removing Comcast wires from utility poles next week unless the cable company pays up.

In a notice on its website, the electric co-op said:

If Comcast does not pay the amounts owed to STEMC [Southwest Tennessee Electric Membership Corporation] by June 28, 2017, we will begin removing their attachments from our poles. Removal of Comcast cables will affect Comcast service to their customers in Tipton County. We regret that some customers may lose their Comcast service. However, the full cost and maintenance of these utility poles are borne by all members of STEMC, and we cannot allow STEMC members to subsidize Comcast’s services. We are hopeful that Comcast will make payment prior to the deadline and avoid the need to remove their cable attachments.

Comcast promised to pay the “correct amount,” but the industry giant says that STEMC tried to double its bill in 2015 and did not provide evidence to support the new amount until this month, according to a WREG news report last night.
