Enlarge / Numbers. On cards. And that’s… basically the game! (credit: Charlie Theel)
Welcome to Ars Cardboard, our weekend look at tabletop games! Check out our complete board gaming coverage at cardboard.arstechnica.com.
When I first heard The Mind described, it didn’t make sense. This little German game has players cooperate to play cards from their hands in ascending order, without talking—and that’s about it. The concept sounds farcical in its simplicity, particularly when paired with the amount of furor the game has generated.
Then I played the thing, and it wouldn’t get out of my head.

The Audi TT is probably the most polarizing sports coupe on the market.
It’s the compact, two-door, four-seater hatchback of the Audi lineup, and it’s among the smallest cars the luxury automaker produces.
In its base form, the TT’s 220-horsepower, four-cylinder engine doesn’t necessarily inspire thoughts of track days and breakneck zero-to-60 times. It is a design-focused car. On the outside, you get tastefully sculpted fenders, shapely haunches, a stern front fascia with a piercing LED headlight array.
The 2018 TT maintains the rounded wedge aesthetic that made the tiny coupe famous when it first hit the streets in 1998.
I first drove the current generation TT back in 2016 and loved it. I was a little bit head-over-heels with it, actually. I even called it a “mini-R8,” and got my inbox flooded with fan mail from people who disagreed. (Some of them made good points, to be fair).
Since then, I have driven quite a few cars — from the actualR8, in V10 Plus guise, to the Tesla Model S P100D, the Cadillac CTS-V, Lexus GS F, and many others that are far more unhinged than a base TT.
But then there’s the Audi TT RS. It’s still a TT, yes, but that’s in name only. Everything else about it is on an entirely different stratum. It’s a 400-horsepower, all-wheel-drive misfit that grunts and snarls to life when you hit the start button and barks and growls at everything on the road.
But you want to know the quickest way to become jaded about fast cars? Drive a lot of fast cars.
When Audi let me borrow a TT RS for a few days this month, I obliged, but I wasn’t expecting to be impressed. It took only a few drives to change my mind.
Keep reading to find out why …

The X-Files taketh away… and The X-Files giveth.
Wednesday’s Season 11 finale ended on a giant cliffhanger: Though the pandemic in Scully’s visions was averted, it came with a price — the apparent death of her son, William/Jackson, at Cigarette Smoking Man’s hand. When a grief-stricken Mulder lamented that his son was dead, Scully sadly corrected him: The boy was, indeed, Cigarette Smoking Man’s child, created with technology (which explains his ability to blow people up using just his mind) and implanted in her all those years ago.
Looks like Disney doesn’t intend to put Olaf’s Frozen Adventure on ice.
The polarizing Frozen short received a cold reception when it aired in front of screenings of Pixar’s sumptuous new film Coco, with many complaining of the short’s 20-plus minute length and the lack of warning to audiences concerning its placement. Thankfully, two weeks after the short’s run and the frustrated outcry surrounding it, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was pulled from theaters. But hell would freeze over before Disney lets go of anything related to their animated juggernaut Frozen. Annoyed parents can now be treated to all 21 minutes of the holiday special in the place where it was meant to premiere all along: TV.
Disney announced that Olaf’s Frozen Adventure will premiere on ABC as past of Disney and ABC Television Group’s “25 Days of Christmas” celebration on December 14. This follows news that the short was pulled from all theatrical screenings of Coco starting on December 8. The short was directed by Kevin Deters and Stevie Wermers-Skelton and is produced by Roy Conli, who said in a statement:
“We are thrilled to be part of ABC’s ‘25 Days of Christmas’ festivities. While making the film, our crew was so inspired by all of the great television holiday specials of the past. It’s a dream come true for all of us.”
To be fair, when Disney announced that the Frozen short was going to accompany Coco in theaters, it was announced as a limited run. But many speculated that the reason the short was pulled so quickly after Coco‘s premiere was because of the furious backlash against the short, which we called a holiday special that “should have stayed on the small screen where it belonged and not inconvenienced everyone who wanted to see Pixar’s latest feature.”
Because Olaf’s Frozen Adventure was originally produced as a made-for-TV special, it’s not-so-surprising that it would eventually make its way back to ABC. But I wonder if the brief Coco run might have zapped all the goodwill that fans have toward Frozen — or at least make them have a cooler reaction to the short. Coco did gangbusters at the box office (you could even say it kicked some ice — okay, I’ll stop) so any Disney fans and their kids will have likely already seen all 21 minutes of the Frozen short already.
Olaf’s Frozen Adventure will air on ABC on December 14, 2017 at 8 p.m. EST.
When the kingdom of Arendelle empties out for the holiday season, Anna and Elsa realize that they have no family traditions of their own. So Olaf sets out on a merry mission to bring home the very best traditions and save Christmas.

When Chick-fil-A opened its first New York City restaurant two years ago, police officers gathered outside the three-story building expecting a rash of protests.
The Georgia-based chain, famous for its fried chicken, had ignited a nationwide boycott several years earlier after its founder spoke out against gay marriage.
This was Chick-fil-A’s foray into the liberal enclave of Manhattan — part of a larger expansion into the Northeast — and no one was quite sure how New Yorkers would react when it arrived.
But to everyone’s surprise there were only a handful of protesters at the restaurant’s grand opening. Meanwhile, hundreds of hungry customers waited for hours in a line that snaked down several blocks to get a taste of the chain’s food.
Since then, Chick-fil-A has opened two more locations in Manhattan and one in Staten Island, and it has expanded into new states and cities across the US, including Seattle, Portland, Michigan, and Maine.
The company’s sales have exploded, from $ 6.8 billion in 2015 to nearly $ 8 billion in 2016, marking 49 consecutive years of sales growth, according to Chick-fil-A. Its 2,100 restaurants generated $ 4.4 million in sales per unit last year, more than any other restaurant chain. By comparison, McDonald’s restaurants generated about $ 2.5 million in per-unit sales last year, and KFC’s brought in about $ 1.1 million per restaurant.
In a few years, Chick-fil-A has managed to shed its controversial image to appeal to a broader swath of America, all without losing its loyal customers base.
Chick-fil-A’s successful expansion north came after its biggest controversy.
Dan Cathy, the son of the late Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy, set off a fury among gay-rights supporters in 2012 that led to nationwide protests after he told the Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of a family.”
After Cathy’s remarks, reports emerged detailing Chick-fil-A’s many charitable donations to anti-gay-marriage organizations.
For months afterward, protesters rallied outside Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country and held “kiss-ins,” where same-sex couples kissed in front of onlookers and TV cameras covering the backlash.

These days, Chick-fil-A is warning all its franchisees against speaking out publicly or getting involved in anything that could blur the line between their private beliefs and their public roles as extensions of the Chick-fil-A brand, the company has said.
Last year, that message extended to politics, in part to keep the brand from being exploited by candidates. The company turned down several candidates who tried to use Chick-fil-A to bolster their campaigns, according to David Farmer, Chick-fil-A’s vice president of menu strategy and development.
“There are several candidates who would like to use us as a platform,” Farmer told Business Insider last year. “We are not engaging. Chick-fil-A is about food, and that’s it.”
The company still encourages its franchisees to get “entrenched” in their communities. Operators’ involvement in their communities is a critical part of what has helped Chick-fil-A attract a passionate following.
Traditionally, that has meant getting involved in local churches. But Chick-fil-A says its focus now — both for local and corporate involvement and philanthropy — is on youth and education causes.

The company’s corporate purpose, which is displayed prominently on its website, still reflects its founder’s Christian faith: “To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us and to have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A.”
Chick-fil-A locations all remain closed on Sundays. The company attributes this tradition to Truett Cathy on its website: “Having worked seven days a week in restaurants open 24 hours, Truett saw the importance of closing on Sundays so that he and his employees could set aside one day to rest and worship if they choose — a practice we uphold today.”
While still practicing some of the Cathy’s faith-based traditions, Chick-fil-A is trying to push a more inclusive message. The company said it has told its operators not to let their activities in the community alienate or exclude any particular faiths or religious organizations.
“We want Chick-fil-A to be for everyone,” Farmer said in an interview last year, recalling a message told to franchisees. “That’s your filter when deciding what to engage in.”
Chick-fil-A’s cultural reinvention hasn’t been without setbacks. Over the years, protesters have tried — and sometimes succeeded — to quash proposals to build new restaurants.
As recently as May, Fordham University in New York denied the chain’s proposal to build a restaurant on campus because of backlash from student groups supporting LGBTQ rights.
But the chain has been largely successful in changing its image, something that’s nearly impossible to achieve, according to Mark Cohen, a professor at Columbia Business School and the former CEO of Sears Canada.
“Most companies that get into trouble never get out of trouble,” Cohen told Business Insider. “It requires heroic leadership, and usually that leadership has to be brand new.”
For Chick-fil-A, that meant replacing Truett Cathy. He retired from his roles as chairman and CEO of Chick-fil-A in 2013 at age 92, about a year after his anti-gay remarks were published. His son Dan took over.
After the younger Cathy became CEO, Chick-fil-A started modernizing its corporate offices in Atlanta and opened an “innovation center” modeled after the offices of Silicon Valley tech companies, including HP Labs, Apple, and Pixar.

The company hired chefs, food scientists, and dietitians to experiment with new menu items to appeal to upmarket customers who frequent chains like Shake Shack and Panera and are looking for healthier options.
One of the products has been the “superfood side” that has kale, broccolini, and roasted nuts.
So as the company has shifted its cultural compass away from churches and toward schools, it has pivoted toward a more “premium” image. “We still view ourselves as fast food because of our drive-thrus, but we’re premium fast food,” Farmer said.
Key to Chick-fil-A’s reinvention has been its customer service, which consistently ranks No. 1 in nationwide surveys. Highly regarded customer service is uncommon in fast food, an industry notorious for paying low wages.
Chick-fil-A doesn’t pay much more than the industry average, at least according to the wage-tracking site Glassdoor. The company pays its restaurant employees about $ 8.45 an hour, just 20 cents more than the industry average of $ 8.25 per hour.
Chick-fil-A says it is investing in employees in other ways, though, whether it’s through training programs or tuition assistance. The company says it encourages franchisees to ask new hires what their career goals are and then to try to help them achieve them, whether or not their aspirations are rooted in the fast-food industry.

For Kevin Moss, a Chick-fil-A manager of 20 years, supporting his team has meant funding an employee’s marketing degree and paying for another worker to take photography classes.
Moss told Business Insider he also tries to support his employees in times of need. If an employee’s family member is in the hospital, he will send food to the family and hospital staff. “I’ve found people are more motivated and respond better when you care about them,” Moss said.
Another franchisee, Jamie Ochsner, gives employees enrolled in high school or college bonuses of up to $ 250 per semester for every A or B grade they get. Many franchisees offer training classes for employees to earn certificates in managing food and labor costs and managing conflict in restaurants.
“The better we train, the longer people stay with us,” Moss said.
Chick-fil-AAccording to Cohen, it’s Chick-fil-A’s investment in its employees that has been the linchpin to its successful reinvention.
“Your employees are your ambassadors to the public,” Cohen said. “The folks who are staffing those Chick-fil-A stores are aggressively reengaging with people and talking about how great the company is.”

For instance, on financial benefits, respondents from the blind group were asked which came closer to their opinion: “I don’t care if a government official financially benefits from their position in the government, OR A government official should be forbidden from financially benefiting from their position,” while the other group was asked: “I don’t care if Donald Trump financially benefits from their position in the government, OR Donald Trump should be forbidden from financially benefiting from their position.”
In the blind group, 22 percent of Democrats and 33 percent of Republicans said they didn’t care if a government official profited from their position. However, in the other group, 28 percent of Democrats and a full 70 percent of Republicans said that Trump should be able to profit from his position.
In interviews after the poll, several respondents said they knew they were carving out special exceptions for Trump. The president has been accused of violating the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution, which prohibits federal officials from accepting gifts or titles from foreign governments, but supporters said they trusted Trump, and he had earned the right to do so.
“He is a very intelligent man,” said Susie Stewart, 73, from Fort Worth, Texas. “He’s proved himself to be one hell of a manager. A builder. I think he has the business sense to do what’s best for the country.”
Although the conflicts of interest question had the biggest swing between the two groups, changes in opinions of various levels occurred on questions about healthcare and pre-existing conditions, “American exceptionalism,” the media, judges and politics, abortion, tax credits, the nuclear arsenal, infrastructure spending, taxation of imports, and inner city crime.
On healthcare, blind respondents were asked if the government should take care of everybody, and whether the government should pay for it, while the other group was asked to agree or disagree with the same statement as “made by President Donald Trump.” Democrats in the blind group were 68 percent in favor of government involvement, compared to 47 percent of Democrats who knew Trump supported it. On the Republican side, a third of the blind group supported it, while 39 percent opted for government involvement if Trump was for it.
“I’m basically in disagreement with everything he says,” Howard House, 58, a Democrat from Jacksonville, Florida, who took the poll, told Reuters/Ipsos. “I’ve almost closed my mind to the guy.”
If the president said the sky was blue, “I’m going to go outside and check,” House said.
The pollsters deemed this “the Trump effect,” and noted that their results suggest “any effort to reach a consensus on key policy issues could be complicated simply by Trump’s involvement.”
It’s unclear what people’s motivations for choosing the answers they did may be. It could be that respondents looked past the question and answered in a way that would support or oppose Trump, while others may not have thought deeply about the issue and looked to the president as a guide, either for or against, John Bullock, an expert in partisanship at the University of Texas at Austin, told Reuters.
“They think of him either as a man who shares their values or someone who manifestly does not,” Bullock said.
