  • The world’s northernmost town is Longyearbyen, which is located in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard and has 2,100 citizens.
  • It is around three hours by plane from Oslo and 650 miles from the North Pole, making it one of the most remote human settlements on Earth.
  • It’s dark for four months a year and light for another four months. There are also more polar bears than there are people.
  • Despite its remoteness, Longyearbyen has all the amenities of a modern town, including a school, a church, restaurants, and a cinema.

Look at the World Atlas list of the world’s northernmost settlements and you’ll see that many at the very top of the list are located in Svalbard — a Norwegian archipelago between mainland Norway and the North Pole.

The first settlement on the list with a population worthy of being described as a town, though, is Longyearbyen, which hosts around 2,100 people who have access to a school, a church, restaurants, and a cinema.

Life in Longyearbyen, despite its amenities, is unlike anywhere else on Earth.

For starters, it’s dark four months a year and perpetually light for another four months. Secondly, it’s suggested residents carry a rifle when travelling outside the town borders — in case they run into a polar bear.

Like many of the settlements in this part of the world, Longyearbyen was established as a mining town, though mining operations have since been phased out of the area.

Now, the town is a place of scientific research and adventure tourism — it is the home of the famous doomsday seed vault, which stores every known crop on the planet.

For photographer Susan Portnoy, the opportunity to shoot polar bears—with her camera, of course—was an experience not to be missed. And so, lens at the ready, she ventured into Manitoba’s Hudson Bay.

My fingers have gone numb. Again.

I pull my mittens over my gloves and wait for the familiar prickly sensation that means my digits have started to thaw. At minus 34 degrees Celsius—and that’s without wind chill—the metal on my camera has become an adversary, and I can’t photograph too long without a break.

Radio Bear however, sporting heavy fur and several inches of fat, is content to lie on the ice. Tucking her nose into the bend of her elbow, she curls herself into a fetal position and closes her eyes. She may be the world’s largest land carnivore, but she looks more like a slumbering house cat than a polar bear.

There are also ptarmigan and Arctic hares. The hares are larger than their southern counterparts with longer back legs and are perfectly camouflaged—I rarely see them unless they move. I’ve come to think of them as the clowns of the tundra, little slapstick characters that roll in the snow and hop in every direction on their goofy oversized feet.

Wolves are less common, though one evening we hear a pack howling like something from a Dracula flick. Following their cries, we find a lone caribou standing on the crest of a hill. “Where there’s caribou, there’s wolves,” says Rob, grinning. The howling stops as we reach a lake and in the sapphire light of the blue hour, we spy a wolf racing across the ice. Then another, and another. We only see them for a few seconds before they vanished into the night, but I am downright giddy.

She’s in front of me now, about 20 meters ahead. My heart is pounding, but until Andy says otherwise, I’m clicking away on my camera. He grabs two rocks to bang together, another tactic in an escalating strategy to warn her off. Some 30 feet away, she stops, sniffs the air then walks away to my right. We watch gobsmacked as she crashes through a clump of willows and disappears.

As the last glimpse of her disappears from view, I’m reminded that these incredible creatures, as a whole, are in jeopardy. According to Polar Bears International, the rise in global warming has been responsible for a 30 per cent reduction in Arctic sea ice since 1979. As a result, PBI says, “scientists predict that as the Arctic continues to warm, two-thirds of the world’s polar bears could disappear within this century.” They could be extinct by 2100.

While Hudson Bay polar bear populations seem to be stable at the moment, thousands of miles north in Baffin Bay, the South Beaufort Sea and Kane Basin, bear numbers are in decline.

Two Emperor penguins grabbed a sneaky selfie when they unexpectedly stumbled upon an polar explorer’s unmanned camera. The pair of flightless birds have now become viral stars.

The footage was captured by Antarctic researcher Eddie Gault. The Australian left his camera on the ice while hiking around the Auster Rookery near his country’s Mawson research facility at the edge of the Antarctic plateau. When he returned, Gault found the camera upturned and soon discovered the locals had been making use of his equipment.

A video of the close encounter shows a pair of crafty Emperor penguins sneak up to the camera and flip the lens skyward – all the better for snapping a selfie. The birds then inspect the device before appearing to consult one another about its origins. The Australian Antarctic Division published the video to its Twitter feed on Thursday.

Twitter users were tickled by the video, with some comparing the pair to a hip-hop duo. Others likened their apparent bewilderment to a grandparent getting a smartphone for the first time.

The Auster Rookery is one of 40 breeding grounds for thousands of penguins on the icy continent. Australia’s Antarctic Division is Australia’s first continental station and the longest continuously operating station south of the Antarctic Circle.

“I’m in a periphery sport that not a lot of people understand—nor the place I’m traveling to,” Larsen explains. He said this is especially true in the US, a country that doesn’t have a collective consciousness of polar exploration on a national level, compared to, say, Norway. “So many people ask me, ‘Is there land at the North Pole?’” he gripes.

However, he wants people to overcome this naiveté and understand. And his decades of experience and wisdom mean he has the credentials to be a true educator in his field, be it via his polar training courses or his many TED talks. It’s one of his life’s goals to pass his knowledge to others, just as explorers of the past have bestowed upon him.

It was polar explorer Will Steger—who led the first unsupported North Pole expedition in 1986—who really inspired Larsen. “He is probably one of the biggest modern-day pioneers of polar exploration,” he says. “The expeditions he did were almost directly similar to Shackleton’s, still using analog technology. They weren’t using GPS. A lot of the time, there’s no logistics. To me, he kind of represents the end of that classic era of exploration.”

Perhaps it’s coincidental that Steger and Larsen—now friends—both represent the end of an era in North Pole exploration. A 2017 report from the Arctic Council predicts that the ice in the Arctic will be completely melted by 2040.

“I’m basically a dinosaur,” Larsen tells me. “The pursuit that I had chosen may no longer exist in the very near future.”

  • Scientists have discovered how many seals polar bears need to catch while they forage on ice to survive.

Polar bears live in a remote and inhospitable environment far from most human settlements. For most biologists, opportunities to observe these animals are fleeting. In fact, scientists’ main resources for understanding basic behaviors of polar bears on sea ice are observations of polar bear behavior and foraging rates made by Canadian biologist Ian Stirling more than 40 years ago, combined with local traditional knowledge from Arctic indigenous peoples.

With ongoing and forecasted declines in Arctic sea ice, there is a greater need to understand how polar bears use sea ice and will respond to anticipated environmental changes. To answer this question, I have been studying polar bears’ physiology and foraging behavior in the Arctic since 2013 with colleagues from the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of California at Santa Cruz, the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research and Dr. Stephen Atkinson, an independent research wildlife biologist.

It added that it would encourage enterprises to build infrastructure and conduct commercial trial voyages, paving the way for Arctic shipping routes that would form a “Polar Silk Road.”

Land territories in the Arctic cover an area of around 8 million square km, with sovereignty belonging to Russia, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Canada and the United States. The Arctic Ocean is more than 12 million square km, where coastal and other countries share maritime rights and interests according to international law.

Despite being a non-Arctic state, China is increasingly active in the polar region. It became an observer member of the Arctic Council in 2013. The country has a major stake in the Russian Yamal liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, which is expected to supply China with 4 million tons of LNG per year.

According to the white paper, China is also eyeing the development of oil, gas, mineral resources and other non-fossil energies, as well as fishing and tourism in the region. It vowed to work “jointly with Arctic states, while respecting traditions and cultures of the Arctic residents, including the indigenous peoples and conserving natural environment.”

“China, as a responsible major country, is ready to cooperate with all relevant parties to seize the historic opportunity in the development of the Arctic, to address the challenges brought by the changes in the region,” said the paper.

Focused on trade-boosting infrastructure projects along the path of the ancient Silk Road, the Belt and Road Initiative aims to connect China to Europe, the Middle East and beyond.
