Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the proposed law, passed by the lower house of the Polish parliament on Friday, “baseless.” The new legislation prescribes prison time for using phrases like “Polish death camps” to refer to the notorious mass concentration camps Nazi Germany operated in occupied Poland during World War II.
“One cannot change history, and the Holocaust cannot be denied,” Netanyahu wrote on Facebook late on Saturday, adding that he had asked the Israeli embassy in Poland to “meet tonight with the Polish prime minister to relay my firm stance against this bill.”
The bill, which still needs approval from Poland’s Senate and president, is perceived by critics as an attempt by the country’s nationalist government to target anyone who seeks to contest its official stance on the conduct of Poles during the war, which places emphasis on heroism and sacrifice while rejecting the complicity of some in mass murder. Under the new legislation, anyone who publicly attributes blame for the crimes committed by the Nazis to Poles or the Polish state would be liable for penalties.
“Non-governmental organizations indicate that every other day the phrase ‘Polish death camps’ is used around the world,” Poland’s deputy justice minister Patryk Jaki said in a speech before the lower house on Friday. “In other words, German Nazi crimes are attributed to Poles. And so far the Polish state has not been able to effectively fight these types of insults to the Polish nation.”
Israel’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial has issued a statement opposing the Polish legislation, saying it is “liable to blur the historical truths regarding the assistance the Germans received from the Polish population during the Holocaust.”
“There is no doubt that the term ‘Polish death camps’ is a historical misrepresentation,” the Yad Vashem memorial said. “However, restrictions on statements by scholars and others regarding the Polish people’s direct or indirect complicity with the crimes committed on their land during the Holocaust are a serious distortion.”
Former Finance Minister Yair Lapid, the head of Israel’s centrist Yesh Atid party, also lambasted the controversial bill on Twitter.
I utterly condemn the new Polish law which tries to deny Polish complicity in the Holocaust. It was conceived in Germany but hundreds of thousands of Jews were murdered without ever meeting a German soldier. There were Polish death camps and no law can ever change that.

“I utterly condemn the new Polish law which tries to deny Polish complicity in the Holocaust. It was conceived in Germany but hundreds of thousands of Jews were murdered without ever meeting a German soldier. There were Polish death camps and no law can ever change that,” Lapid wrote.
How does that relate to the fact that WW2 death camps were German Nazi, not Polish (our thread)? Shameless.

His comment added fuel to the fire, sparking the Polish Embassy in Israel to respond: “Your unsupportable claims show how badly Holocaust education is needed, even here in Israel.”
“My grandmother was murdered in Poland by Germans and Poles,” Lapid replied. “I don’t need Holocaust education from you. We live with the consequences every day in our collective memory. Your embassy should offer an immediate apology.”
To which the embassy retorted: “How does that relate to the fact that WW2 death camps were German Nazi, not Polish (our thread)? Shameless.”
Noting that 73 years had passed since the Auschwitz death camp on Polish soil was liberated, Israeli President Reuven Rivlin said that respecting the tragic page of history is a must.
Auschwitz is the most bitter lesson on how evil ideologies can lead to hell on earth. Jews, Poles, and all victims should be guardians of the memory of all who were murdered by German Nazis. Auschwitz-Birkenau is not a Polish name, and Arbeit Macht Frei is not a Polish phrase.

“The Jewish people, the State of Israel, and the entire world must ensure that the Holocaust is recognized for its horrors and atrocities,” Rivlin said. “Also among the Polish people, there were those who aided the Nazis in their crimes. Every crime, every offense, must be condemned. They must be examined and revealed.”
For decades, Polish society tried to avoid discussing the killing of Jews by civilians, with atrocities usually blamed on the Nazis. The discussion was reinvigorated by the book “Neighbors,” published in 2000, by Polish-American historian Jan Tomasz Gross, which explored the murder of Jews by their Polish neighbors in the village of Jedwabne in 1941. Holocaust historians have gathered a large dossier of evidence of Polish villagers who murdered Jews fleeing the Nazis. According to one scholar at Yad Vashem, of the 160,000-250,000 Jews who had sought help from fellow Poles, only between 10 to 20% survived.
In 2011, Poland’s then-President Bronislaw Komorowski offered an apology during ceremonies marking 70 years since Polish villagers murdered hundreds of their Jewish neighbors in a World War II massacre.

Loud, racist and extreme-right activists have hijacked Poland’s Independence Day celebrations in Warsaw. United under the “We Want God” slogan, nationalist activists held banners which read “Death to the enemies of the homeland,” amongst others.
The so-called ”Independence March,” to celebrate Poland’s rebirth as a nation in 1918, was organized partly by neo-fascist groups such as National-Radical Camp (ONR), the National Movement (RN) and the All-Polish Youth (MW) groups. The nationalist rally, according to police estimates, drew a crowd of roughly 60,000 activists, with some youths wearing balaclavas.
Highlighting an important element of Polish nationalism and its strong identification with the Roman Catholic Church, thousands assembled under the theme, “We want God,” as far-right activists marched through the streets of Warsaw.
Seemingly spurred on by the Polish government’s reluctance to take in refugees under EU quotas, the far-right activists also highlighted their Islamophobic, xenophobic and nationalistic leanings by carrying banners depicting Islam as a Trojan horse. Other signs read, “White Europe of brotherly nations.”
Far-right supporters also held up flags with the emblem of the National Armed Forces and the words, “Death to the enemies of the homeland.” One of the activists told TVP news he was taking part “to remove Jewry from power.”
At the sound of drums, chants of “Catholic Poland, not secular” and “Honor and glory to heroes, white and red invincible colors,” rang out, with white and red Polish flags fluttering throughout. The marchers turned the sky pink after igniting smoke flares and firecrackers, with more slogans, “Glory to the heroes,” “Pride, pride, national pride!” and “God, Honor, Motherland,” punctuating the march.
About 6,000 policemen were deployed to keep public order throughout the city. Warsaw seen a number of marches and events, such as a counter-protest organized by the anti-fascist movement. Around 1,500 people attended that rally which comprised members from a dozen or so left-wing organizations.
Holding banners with the wordings: “For your freedom and ours,” “Women against fascism,” “Nationalism is a disease,” and “Class struggle, not national,” activists were on the streets to counter nationalism, racism, sexism and other kinds of hatred.
While no major incidents were reported throughout the day, Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak was asked to comment on the slogans scrawled on the banners of the extreme-right procession. Claiming that he did not see the banners personally, Blaszczak urged journalists not to “make such obvious associations.”
Instead, he called the Independence March “a beautiful sight.” “We are proud that so many Poles have decided to take part in a celebration connected to the Independence Day holiday,” the minister added according to AP.
Celebrated on November 11 each year, Poland’s Independence Day marks the restoration of Poland’s sovereignty as the Second Polish Republic in 1918, after 123 years of partition by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia, and the Habsburg Empire. Polish independence was confirmed by the Western powers in the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I.

“Sulejow, destroyed villages and cities, the Polish nation, have the right to the truth of how the defense of Europe and European values looked in 1939, and who really defended them. And who destroyed them,” Macierewicz said during a visit to the town of Sulejow, located in central Poland, as it marked the 78th anniversary of being heavily bombarded by the German Luftwaffe at the start of WWII.
He went on to say that he wanted to remind Merkel, Macron and others who are willing to “erase the drama of Poland and the Poles from the historical memory of Europe,” AP reports.
The minister then recalled the millions of Poles killed and the near total destruction of Polish cities, including Sulejow and Warsaw, adding that those communities now have the right to financial compensation from Germany.
His remarks appear to be a reaction to a comment made last week by the deputy vice president of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, in which he said that Poland could thank the EU for the greater sovereignty and freedom it enjoys today than in recent centuries, when the country was often under foreign rule.
Also Monday, Polish Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski called for “serious talks” to take place between Warsaw and Berlin regarding World War II reparations, claiming Germany’s 1939 attack on the country still “casts a shadow” on relations between the two nations.
“We should sit down to serious talks with the Germans and together think about how to deal with the issue” of reparations, Waszczykowski told RMF radio station, according to AFP.
“How can we deal with the fact that Germany’s 1939 attack (on Poland) and unresolved post-war issues still cast a shadow on Polish-German relations?” he added.
The minister went on to state that Poland is “preparing” its formal position on WWII reparations, while declining to say when that stance would be made public.
“The fact is that Poland was destroyed during the war, terrible crimes were committed here, and we have received no compensation for that,” he said.
Monday’s statements by the two ministers come just two days after Poland’s interior minister, Mariusz Blaszczak, said that Poland could claim $ 1 trillion from Germany.
Meanwhile, Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo has also supported the push for reparations to be paid, saying the country is simply seeking justice and stressing that Poland is a “victim of World War II.”
The leader of Poland’s governing Law and Justice (PiS) party has also accused Germany of neglecting its responsibility for wartime damage inflicted on the country, which saw Warsaw razed to the ground.
Poland’s right-wing government disputes a 1953 resolution by the country’s then-communist authorities who dropped claims against Germany, claiming the deal was made under duress from the Soviet Union. However, some government officials have recently spoken out against the reparation claims, with Poland’s deputy foreign minister, Marek Magierowski, telling the parliament on August 8 that the 1953 reconciliation is lawful and legally binding.
Legal experts hired by Germany’s lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, said last week that Poland has no claims to compensation for World War II crimes, citing a newer treaty signed in 1990, known as the “Treaty on the Final Settlement With Respect to Germany.”
That treaty, according to the legal team, “blocks any reparation demands against Germany to the present day,” Deutsche Welle reported, citing the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ).
Poland “had, during the treaty negotiations, at least implicitly waived their right to assert them (claims for reparations),” the legal experts said.
The 1990 treaty saw the four powers that occupied Germany at the end of World War II France, the Soviet Union, Britain, and the US formally renounce all rights, allowing for the full return of German sovereignty.
Meanwhile, a majority of Poles (51 percent) oppose such claims against Germany, according to an August survey by the independent Ibris pollsters. Only 24 percent support such claims.
The current government’s push for reparations comes as tensions continue to mount between the EU and Warsaw over media and judicial reforms by the Law and Justice government, which critics say erode democratic standards and the rule of law.
French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Poland of going “against European interests,” while Merkel has called Poland a “serious issue.”
Poland isn’t the only European country to demand reparations from Germany. Greece demanded that Berlin pay €278.7 billion (US$ 329.4 billion) in war reparations in 2015 in a claim which has also been dismissed by Germany.
“It is our firm belief that questions of reparations and compensation have been legally and politically resolved,” German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said at the time.
