The gutsy gambler, who has won close to half a million dollars (AUD) on the tables of the iconic gaming city, is midway through his creepiest wager yet.
He currently sits inside a bathroom in an unknown apartment with just a bed and a bathtub at his disposal for 30 days.
The creepy stunt is part of a bet devised by Aussie Rory Young, a friend and fellow poker player of Alati’s. The players put up $ 100,000 (A$ 138,000) in what’s known on the scene as a “prop bet”, which is a wager designed to test the mental toughness of players away from the table.
“The conditions are complete darkness, so no electronics, no light-emitting devices, no drugs of any kind,” Young said. “He is allowed any type of food that he wants. He has a bed in there, he has a shower and a bathtub. He has pretty lavish toiletries like Epsom salts, sugar scrubs, that kind of stuff.”
But there’s more to the madness.
In order to further warp the mind of Alati over his month-long stint, Young has made sure he gets his food delivered on an irregular schedule to make it harder for him to figure out how much time has passed.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. Young allowed Alati access to any food he wanted over the course of the month.
His family and friends have been given a livestream where they can check in on him, but no communication with the outside world is permitted. Young revealed Alati’s family were strongly against the challenge with his sister the most vocal.
“They tried to get him to not do it but he doesn’t listen to anybody but himself,” Young told Deadspin. “She tried very hard to get him to pull out and he wasn’t having it. She’s pretty worried.”
Alati’s father express similar concerns but remained supportive of his son pursuing the wacky endeavour.
“I’m definitely concerned,” he said. “But I chose to focus on the positive, wishing for a successful completion of the wager.
“I gave him a chance to talk me through it and hear him out … He’s in a profession where they do things that other people wouldn’t do.”
Alati has roughly two weeks left in his dark cave before he can emerge victorious. Game on.
It’s not the first time poker players have proved their worth in extravagant challenges either.
Instagram playboy Dan Blizerian once won a $ 600,000 bet cycling from Vegas to Los Angeles in under 48 hours. Hedge fund manager and fellow Bill Perkins bet against the 38-year-old and got a rude surprise when Blizerian, dubbed the “biggest jerk of Instagram” entered LA with 15 hours to spare.
The ride, which was estimated to have spanned over 500km, gathered international attention in 2016 with former Tour de France victory Lance Armstrong reaching out to help Blizerian’s effort.
AT THE annual World Series of Poker, which begins this week in Las Vegas, the main event is the no-limit Texas hold ’em tournament. In the course of two weeks of gruelling knock-out play, several thousand players are whittled down to just two, playing “heads-up” for one of the WSOP’s coveted bracelets.
In last year’s final hand, both players had pushed all their chips in, with five shared cards yet to be dealt. Scott Blumstein, who held Ace-Deuce, was a big underdog against Daniel Ott, who held Ace-Eight. With one card to come, Mr Blumstein’s hand had not improved. His chances had narrowed to 7%. Of the remaining 44 cards, only one of the other three deuces could give him victory.
The cards—and thus the odds of winning or losing—were known to both players, because they had already committed all their chips. Poker is not usually like this. Winning depends not only on your cards but on the unseen cards held by other players, on your ability to deceive them by your…
]]>“Are we playing cards here or dealing with serious matters? Is this a game of poker or international relations?” Maria Zakharova said when asked by Sky News correspondent John Sparks if Moscow accepted that “Russia has a serious credibility problem,” as a large group of countries simply don’t believe its denials in the case of the poisoning of double agent Sergei Skripal.
“Is it a sort of international game within the rules set by the UN Charter or, alternatively, is it an unrestricted use of force and pressure?” she said, questioning the behavior of the UK and the US.
Zakharova explained that “for decades, it was the West that taught others, including Russia, that force should not be used. Neither should political or ideological pressure.” Yet, she noted when Moscow accepted the Western rules and “became an open and transparent international player,” and showed that the world can be “multi-polar,” then it “felt no longer being accepted.” As an example, she mentioned the US interfering in Russia’s energy supply deals with Europe.
Zakharova then asked the British journalist a question: “Do you think that after the anti-Iraq campaign, Western nations – the nations that were part of the coalition – deserve being trusted?”
But Sparks refused to answer, saying that he wasn’t a representative of the British government. And when offered to share his personal opinion on the matter, he replied: “That’s not my concern. That’s not why I am here. I think you are deflecting.”
Speaking about the solidarity of a large group of countries, she said that this is something that should not come out of “pressure,” as it happened after former double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were poisoned with a Soviet-designed nerve agent in Salisbury in early March. Zakharova said the way counties expelled between one to four diplomats at different times and under different pretexts, shows that it was done “under colossal pressure.”
She said that countries that refuse to cave into this pressure and spoil relations with Moscow, like Turkey, “show a responsible approach to international law.” Zakharova warned that “tomorrow or the day after tomorrow any country could become a victim of a provocation,” like the one Russia currently faces.

She welcomed movie stars, businessmen, stockbrokers and sportsmen to her table. She conducted herself with strict professionalism, never mixing business with pleasure, guarded all her clients’ secrets and made millions for herself along the way.
It all came to a sticky end when the FBI arrested her in a dawn raid in 2013.
Jessica Chastain plays Molly in a film that takes you on a whirlwind tour of these events, haring between past and present and propelled forward by screeds of dense voiceover narration rattled off with machine gun speed.
It is a dynamic, quicksilver insight into a life that feels stranger than fiction. Driven by her tough father Larry (Kevin Costner), Molly was a world-class skier before a freak injury ended her hopes of Olympic glory.
She was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar when one job led to another and she began helping her sleazy boss at his weekly poker game.
Molly’s story comes spilling out for lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba) when he reluctantly agrees to defend her. It is a tale of enterprise and integrity with Molly in conflict with mean-spirited men trying to thwart her and assert their power.
A great piece of barnstorming storytelling from West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin.
(Opens nationwide on January 1.)

Ben Affleck and Tobey Maguire were regulars.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon joined the elite.
Lesser celebrities pleaded to be allowed just to watch.
Champagne and caviar flowed as drop-dead gorgeous models served gourmet cuisine, masseuses soothed weary shoulders and burly bodyguards watched over millions in cash.
It was the world’s most glamorous high-stakes underground poker game, yet presiding over Hollywood’s aristocracy was the unlikely figure of a petite 26-year-old former cocktail waitress.
Molly Bloom earned a staggering £3million a year just in tips from the high-rollers she hosted.

She shopped on Rodeo Drive, holidayed in the Hamptons, flew in private jets and employed a retinue that included a chauffeur.
Bloom’s rise in the male-dominated world of poker, her brush with the mafia and the FBI sting that finally brought her down are the real-life dramas that unfold in the acclaimed new movie Molly’s Game, which opens in the UK on New Year’s Day.
Starring Jessica Chastain as brunette beauty Bloom opposite Brit star Idris Elba, Kevin Costner, Chris O’Dowd and Michael Cera, the film hides the true identity of the game’s all-star poker players.
But Bloom has no such qualms, tipping her cards on celebrity peccadillos.
“Tobey Maguire was the worst tipper, the best player and the absolute worst loser,” says Bloom of the Spider-Man actor.
Ben Affleck was “polite, nice” and liked high stakes.

Molly’s Game tells how Molly Bloom’s world crashed after an FBI swoop
“He didn’t stay all night like a lot of the guys. He always had a specific time when he would stand up at the table.
“He would leave at a reasonable hour.
“He never lost a great deal.
He usually won.”
At a table when many players bought starting stacks of £370,000, Affleck asked for only £37,000 in chips.
“Ben’s buy-in choice told me that he was a smart player who liked to limit his downside,” says Bloom.

At his first game Affleck was challenged by actor Rick Salomon, who earned millions as the co-star of Paris Hilton’s sex tape: “Hey, yo, did Jennifer Lopez’s a*** have cellulite on it or was it nice?”
After a tense silence Affleck replied: “It was nice,” and pushed his chips into a huge pot as the players cracked up laughing.
Matt Damon, who starred in 1998 poker movie Rounders, “was one of the nicest, most humble, down-to-earth guys I have ever met”, says Bloom.
“There were no airs about him.” But DiCaprio had a “strange” poker style, she recalls.
“It was almost as if he wasn’t trying to win or lose.
“He folded most hands and listened to music on huge headphones.”

Maguire brought DiCaprio to games in the hope of luring “whales” – multi-millionaires who wouldn’t mind losing fortunes to celebrities.
“Most of the people who played had a serous obsession with the game,” says Bloom, 39.
“These were people who were able to play cards for this many hours a week this regularly.
“It was very compulsive.
“Leo didn’t have that in him.”
Maguire hated to lose and after throwing his chips across the table to a lawyer – invited because of his deep pockets – insisted that Bloom inform him of all new players in advance.

Maguire also demanded a spread of vegan desserts.
Though he helped promote Bloom’s game among his celebrity friends, at the end of long nights he would tip her just a few hundred dollars when other players gave thousands.
But her club became the hottest ticket in town.
“Every card player in Hollywood wanted to come to the games,” says Bloom.
“Everyone’s friends and their friends wanted to come to watch.”
The audiences were as diverse as the Olsen twins and rapper Nelly.

The games began in 2004 in the back of the Viper Room, a club on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, where Bloom worked as a cocktail waitress.
She hails from a family of over-achievers: the daughter of a university professor she was an Olympic-class skier, with one brother an Olympian and another a Harvard-educated surgeon.
Her poker games graduated to mansions and Beverly Hills hotel rooms by 2008 with a £190,000 buying just to get a seat at the game.
There would be £1.5million on the table before a single hand was played.
Bloom set up the venue, sent the invitations, hired dealers and beautiful waitresses, supplied the food and drink and kept Sinatra playing in the background.
“The fact that every man was treated like James Bond only made the game a hot ticket,” she says.

Bloom also vouched for the players’ debts and after each game she paid the winners and collected from losers, sometimes chasing them for days.
“I was bankrolling the games, vetting the players, extending the credit,” she explains.
“My life was really stressful.
“I didn’t have the traditional resource to collect on debts and I’m certainly not going to get violent about it.
“Most game-runners behaved like gangsters when they got stiffed.
“They sold the debts on the streets or hired muscle and manipulated people into paying, or worse.”

But Bloom had something no other poker game had: the Hollywood A-list and players paid their debts just to be invited back.
However Maguire felt that Bloom had grown too big for her Jimmy Choo boots and during one game humiliated her by ordering her to “bark like a seal who wants a fish” just to collect a relatively paltry £750 tip, she wrote in her memoir.
“What’s wrong?” he taunted.
“You’re too rich now?”
After years of success the A-list moved on and her Hollywood game crashed sending Bloom to New York where she hosted private poker games with even higher stakes for sports stars and Wall Street tycoons.
Though her tips were huge – she earned £3million in 2009 without ever playing a hand of poker – her risks were astronomic.

Soon the Russian mafia came calling, demanding a piece of her action in exchange for protection.
When she refused Bloom was beaten up.
Players increasingly failed to pay their debts and anxiety-ridden Bloom turned to drugs.
The FBI, acting on a tip, raided one of Bloom’s games in 2011 and seized her assets.
Grilled over her mafia connections she escaped with a warning.
But two years later her luck ran out.

Bloom was arrested for profiting from illegal poker games.
Hosting a private poker game for tips is legal in America but Bloom crossed the line when she started taking a percentage of every hand played.
She was hit with a £93,000 fine and a year’s probation, then wrote her 2014 memoir Molly’s Game, which inspired the movie.
Bloom blames greed, ambition and naiveté for her downfall.
“All those things,” she says.
“But if she could choose, would she do it all again?
“Yes, a thousand times yes.”

For the first time ever, pole dancing and poker have been provisionally recognized by an international sporting body, making them potential events for future Olympic Games.
Both activities have been given “observer status” by The Global Association of International Sports Federations (GAISF), meaning they are both now provisionally regarded as sports.
Other sports in the list of GAISF “observers” include armwrestling, dodgeball, footgolf, kettlebell lifting and table soccer.
“Pole Sports is a performance sport combining dance and acrobatics on a vertical pole,” writes the GAISF on its website.
“Pole Sports requires great physical and mental exertion, strength and endurance are required to lift, hold and spin the body. A high degree of flexibility is needed to contort, pose, demonstrate lines and execute techniques.”
Observer status is the first step sporting federations need to achieve before becoming fully fledged GAISF members, and more importantly to be considered for Olympic participation.
The president of the International Pole Sports Federation (IPSF), Katie Coates, welcomed the “historic” decision.
“The IPSF is very proud to have taken this positive step towards official recognition and the GAISF Observer Status will give our sport the opportunity to develop further, on the national and on the international stage,” Coates said in a statement.

“In just eight years we have created a sport, ignited a global following and inspired a new generation of sportsmen, women and children. I am thankful to the IPSF and GAISF teams and excited about the future of our sport.”

Aaron Sorkin has a helluva story for his feature directorial debut. The writer behind The West Wing, The Social Network, and Moneyball is telling another story of ambition and perseverance with Molly’s Game. Based on Molly Bloom’s fast-paced, high-stakes, and exceptionally entertaining memoir of the same name, Sorkin will show how she ran some of the most exclusive and lucrative underground poker games in Hollywood and New York.
Below, watch the first Molly’s Game trailer.
After Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain) almost made the Olympic Ski Team and before she attended Harvard Law School, she decided to take a year off before college. Within two weeks of living in Los Angeles, she found herself hosting games at the Viper Room on the Sunset Strip, or as it’s called in the film, The Cobra Lounge.
Bloom quickly went from working in an office for a sleaze to running the sleaze’s games. What started as a low-key underground game kept growing. Some notable names attended the games, including actors you’d all know. Bloom faced hurdle after hurdle creating her illegal business, which took a wrong turn when some members of the Russian mafia attended one of her games. Not long after they showed up, Bloom was greeted by 17 FBI agents in her home.
It looks like Chastain is completely embodying the spirit of Molly Bloom in this trailer. The Bloom on the page in the memoir is captured by what we see of Chastain in the trailer. The resilience, the confidence, and the unwillingness to back down or settle – it’s all there. She’s an extraordinary character. Bloom is also not unlike a lot of Sorkin’s past boundary-pushing characters who fight to achieve their vision.
Sorkin didn’t initially plan on directing the film when he took the writing job. “God knows I was scared going into it, but I just felt like if I was ever going to do it, it was going to be this,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “I felt like there was a chance I could be good at it. I don’t mean good at directing. I mean good at directing this movie.” It was producers Mark Gordon and Amy Pascal who suggested Sorkin should direct Molly’s Game. His voice is on full-volume in this trailer. Sorkin’s dialogue and Chastain’s work are the standouts of the first look at a very promising movie.
MOLLY’S GAME is the true story of Molly Bloom a beautiful, young, Olympic-class skier who ran the world’s most exclusive high-stakes poker game for a decade before being arrested in the middle of the night by 17 FBI agents wielding automatic weapons. Her players included Hollywood royalty, sports stars, business titans and finally, unbeknownst to her, the Russian mob. Her only ally was her criminal defense lawyer Charlie Jaffey, who learned that there was much more to Molly than the tabloids led us to believe.
Molly’s Game opens in theaters November 22, 2017.

]]>Guillermo Amor … not letting on whether Saturday’s match will be his last in charge of the Reds. Picture: Sarah Reed
GUILLERMO Amor has refused to surrender his pre-game poker face, despite having nothing to lose before potentially facing his last A-League match at Hindmarsh on Saturday night.
All hope the Adelaide United boss would radically change his demeanour after keeping a stiff upper lip for 56 A-League matches during his two-year contract were banished in his usual cagey style.
On Good Friday the Barca legend kept everyone guessing.
He deflected questions about his formation against Western Sydney despite the clash having potential to be the most emotional since Adelaide claimed the grand final on May 1 against Wanderers at Adelaide Oval.
“It’s the last game, it’s a very important game,’’ Amor said.
“We want to finish well, to win at home the last game.
“This Easter is a good time for this.”
Amor also still wouldn’t give clues to whether this match would actually be his last A-League game on the bench.
He also declared he didn’t know if his key off-contract championship winning men such as Eugene Galekovic, Sergio Cirio, Marcelo Carrusca, Iacopo La Rocca would be playing their last domestic game in Red at Hindmarsh against Wanderers.
“We don’t know, a lot of players finish their contracts,’’ Amor said.
But Amor can also use this clash to see if the Reds can adapt to a radical change in the line-up without distress and with an eye on the future.
There still is plenty for the Reds to play for, albeit not in the A-League.
Adelaide beating Gamba Osaka away on Anzac Day would assure the Reds of playing knockout AFC Champions League soccer in May.
But with United missing three key suspended men – Taylor Regan, Dylan McGowan and Riley McGree – for the clash in Suita City Football Stadium, Amor wouldn’t elaborate if he would on Saturday night use a starting XI similar to the one which will play for intercontinental life on April 25. With that scenario also comes pressure to field Carrusca and La Rocca, who were axed from the Champions League squad.
“It’s possible it (the team) will change something,’’ Amor said.
“Tomorrow we’ll decide better but we have players in good condition, less (the injured) Tarek (Elrich) and (Jordan) Elsey the others are in good condition.”
Amor is facing a major dilemma for the Gamba clash given his two prized Champions League centre backs McGowan and Regan aren’t available.
Amor’s No. 1 defensive midfield soldier Isaias can play at centre back but even he wasn’t sure if he may be unveiled in that position against Wanderers.
“I don’t know he has to decide in the last moment what we do tomorrow to win,’’ Isaias said on Good Friday.
“The most important thing is the game tomorrow, when we finish tomorrow the game we have a week or 10 days to prepare for the game against Osaka.”
But Isaias, who has signed a contract extension until 2020, is still hopeful Carrusca and La Rocca will be offered new terms.
“Hopefully it’s not the last game for them,’’ Isaias said.
“Hopefully they will stay longer with us.”
