Google could soon tell you which restaurants are more likely to give you food poisoning, thanks to an algorithm that can identify lapses in food safety in near real time. Working with researchers from Harvard University, Google tested a machine-learned model in Chicago and Las Vegas to identify user search queries such as “stomach cramps” or “diarrhea”, and then cross-referenced them with saved location history data — in particular recently-visited food establishments — from the smartphones used to make those searches.

Health inspectors were then sent to a number of restaurants: some identified by Google’s model as potentially unsafe, and others identified by traditional methods, such as consumer complaints — the inspectors didn’t know which. When the researchers compared the model with routine inspections by health departments in Las Vegas and Chicago, they found that the overall rate across both cities of unsafe restaurants detected by the model was 52.3 percent, whereas the overall rate of detection of unsafe restaurants via routine inspections across the two cities was 22.7 percent.

Study co-author and Google research scientist Evgeniy Gabrilovich said the model could play a major role in combatting the persistent problem of foodborne illness. “In this study, we have just scratched the surface of what is possible in the realm of machine-learned epidemiology,” he said. “I liken the analogy to the work of Dr John Snow, the father of modern epidemiology, who in 1854 had to go door to door in central London, asking people where they took their water from to find the source of a cholera outbreak. Today, we can use online data to make epidemiological observations in near real-time, with the potential for significantly improving public health in a timely and cost-efficient manner.”

Khashoggi, a journalist who wrote columns that were critical of the Saudi kingdom for the Washington Post, disappeared on October 2 when he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents for his planned marriage to a Turkish citizen.

Despite Turkish authorities pinning the blame for Khashoggi’s alleged murder on Riyadh – claiming to have video and audio proof to back it up – the US has been reluctant to point the finger at the Saudis. US President Donald Trump even floated the theory that perhaps “rogue killers” were responsible for the journalist’s disappearance. No such alternative explanations were offered following the Skripals’ poisoning.

Asked whether Moscow would respond to the Khashoggi disappearance, Putin said Russia still did not have enough details to take any action. “Why do we need to take some steps towards the deterioration of our relations if we don’t understand what is happening? But if someone understands and someone believes that the murder occurred, then I hope that some evidence will be provided,” he said.

Trump has been accused by numerous analysts, journalists and politicians of advocating for Riyadh in order to protect the US’ financially beneficial relationship with the Gulf nation. Many have cited Trump’s business ties with Saudis dating back decades.

On the day that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo landed in Riyadh to discuss the Khashoggi case, $ 100 million was transferred to the State Department by Saudi Arabia – part of a long-planned contribution to help stabilize newly liberated regions of Syria. The US, however, denied that the timing of the transfer had anything to do with the diplomatic incident over Khashoggi’s disappearance.

Turkish sources have leaked information to the press, including details from an alleged recording made of Khashoggi’s murder, during which Saudi forensics expert Saleh al-Tubaiqi allegedly dismembered the journalist’s body while his colleagues listened to music.

Saudi Arabia has denied claims of involvement. Trump has cast doubt over the existence of the tape, and said he plans to have a discussion with Pompeo following his fact-finding trip to Riyadh and Istanbul earlier this week.

When the Skripals were poisoned in the English town of Salisbury in March, British intelligence agencies swiftly accused the Kremlin of being responsible and sanctions were slapped on Moscow. British Prime Minister Theresa May led a chorus of international condemnation, expelling 23 Russian diplomats from the country and convincing the US and a slew of European countries to follow suit.

The controversial group said that Petrov’s real name is Aleksandr Mishkin and he is “a trained military doctor in the employ of the GRU,” the Russian military intelligence service. Bellingcat admitted that the alleged agent’s “true persona has an even sparser digital footprint” than that of the man it identified as Boshirov.

As in Boshirov’s case, the group also relied upon “multiple open sources” and “testimony from people familiar with the person” in question. It also added that it managed to somehow obtain copies of Mishkin’s personal IDs and gathered “forensic evidence” of facial matches between “Mishkin” and Petrov.

Bellingcat did not elaborate on its “investigation methods,” adding that it would publish a separate report on the matter. The authenticity and veracity of the documents, which Bellingcat claimed it got from a Russian database, could not be immediately verified.

In late September, the group claimed that Ruslan Boshirov is actually Colonel Anatoly Chepiga, who served in an elite commando unit and received the decoration of Hero of Russia – the country’s highest award – in 2014. In that case, Bellingcat’s identification relied on what it called a resemblance between an old photo of a man presumed to be Chepiga and a younger Borshirov.

This was later refuted by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who said that Russian databases have no information about Chepiga or about a Chepiga being awarded the highest national merit.

With every new twist surrounding the poisoning of the Skripals in Salisbury, an element of farce is not far behind. No sooner had Britain named its two suspects, the accused showed up claiming they were simply on a mini-break.

Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, who London accuses of being members of Russia’s GRU military intelligence told RT that, actually, they were just two friends who wanted to see Salisbury’s world famous cathedral, and its impressive spire. It’s fair to say their story faced a certain amount of ridicule.

He will be treated by specialists in Berlin.

The plane from Moscow landed at 10:45 p.m. at Schönefeld Airport. Pyotr Verzilov’s mother, Jelena, was also on board.

Every year, 48 million people in the US contract some form of foodborne illness.

Just this week, a Chipotle in Ohio temporarily closed down because more than 400 people said they got sick after eating there. And products sold at grocery stores like Trader Joe’s and Walgreens were recalled because they used lettuce from a supplier that sold McDonald’s a salad mix contaminated with cyclospora.

In many cases, a bout of foodborne illness leads to nausea, diarrhea, cramps, and vomiting. But in more severe cases, food poisoning can be fatal.

A new incident has occurred in the British town of Salisbury that hit the news in relation to the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy and his daughter. A man has passed out in the town center, provoking an emergency response.

UK police have closed a road in Salisbury after a man “in his 30s” had reportedly “fallen ill” right outside the Zizzi restaurant in Wiltshire, where the former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, had dined on the day of the chemical attack, in which a nerve agent –dubbed Novichok– was used.

Emergency services have been seen outside the restaurant as police cordoned off the area. The Police have confirmed the incident in a Twitter post but provided no details. The reasons behind it remain unknown.

Police admitted that “there is nothing to suggest any wider risk to the public” but still announced that they would take “highly precautionary measures to ensure public safety” in light of the “ongoing incident in Salisbury and Amesbury.”

The situation, however, soon calmed down as police announced that “the cordon in place in Castle Street, Salisbury, has been removed and the road has been reopened.” The person in question, who was not identified, was taken to a local hospital, the police said, adding that “there is no concern for either his health or any wider risk to the public.”

This fresh incident comes less than two weeks after a couple, Dawn Sturgess and Charlie Rowley, reportedly fell ill after coming into contact with Novichok in the town of Amesbury, located some 13 kilometers away from Salisbury. Sturgess died days later.

The Amesbury incident victims are believed to have been exposed to the same nerve agent believed to have poisoned Sergei and Yulia Skripal in early March. The Skripal poisoning case caused a major international scandal, as London accused Moscow of being behind the suspected chemical attack, though it presented no evidence substantiating its claims.

Despite the British government blaming Russia, police have not named suspects in either poisoning incident. In May, the UK’s national security adviser Sir Mark Sedwill said authorities did “not yet” know who was responsible for the Skripals’ poisoning.

On Wednesday, the UK counter-terrorism chief, Neil Basu, admitted that the British authorities are not even able to determine if the two incidents are linked. He also said he could not guarantee that those responsible for the attacks would be caught.
