Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

  • The Federal Reserve should consider a 150-basis-point rate hike, a Wells Fargo strategist said.
  • "Why not just rip off the Band-Aid — let's get there in one day," Michael Schumacher told CNBC.
  • Most economists expect the Fed to raise interest rates 75 basis points after the conclusion of its meeting Wednesday.

The Federal Reserve should hike interest rates by 150 basis points — even though that would likely spark "carnage" in stocks, a top Wells Fargo strategist has said.

Most economists expect the US central bank to announce another jumbo rate hike of 75 basis points at the conclusion of its two-day meeting later Wednesday.

But given the Fed likely wants to raise its base rate from 2.5% to 4%, it should consider getting there by making one even more supersized hike in its September policy decision, Michael Schumacher told CNBC on Tuesday.

"The Fed knows what the destination is. It's got the funds rate now, the upper bound is 2.5%," the Wells Fargo Securities' head of macro strategy said on "Fast Money".

"Very likely it gets to 4%-plus this year," he added

"Why not just rip off the Band-Aid — let's get there in one day."

The central bank has raised interest rates 75 basis points at its two previous consecutive meetings, in an effort to tame inflation running near 40-year highs.

Schumacher acknowledged a 150 basis point hike is unlikely, because of the shock it would deliver to markets. Stocks have sagged, with the S&P 500 down 19.3% year-to-date, as investors assessed whether the Fed's aggressive tightening could tip the US into a recession.

"The big fear in the market would be, 'Oh my goodness, they've done a record-sized move — what's going to happen next month or the month after that?'" Schumacher said.

"It would require incredibly good communication and confidence or the result: Carnage. And nobody wants that."

Market still face turbulence in coming months from the central bank's unwinding of the loose monetary policies in place since the 2008 financial crisis, according to Schumacher.

"When you consider the last 10-plus years, we've had incredibly easy monetary policy for most of that time," he said. "Super-stimulative fiscal policy in a lot of cases, especially the US."

"So, doing a very quick U-turn — I suspect it's going to be very rocky," he added. "To think that it would somehow go smoothly from here is probably a big leap."

Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome Powell.

  • Goldman Sachs raised its forecasts for the size of Fed rate hikes at the September and November meetings.
  • The investment bank late Wednesday said it now sees a September increase of 75 basis points and a November increase of 50 basis points.
  • Fed officials have delivered hawkish comments recently that suggest another jumbo-sized move at this month's meeting.

Goldman Sachs raised its forecasts for interest rate increases at the Federal Reserve's next two meetings as monetary policy makers have been asserting the view that more rate hikes are needed to bring down inflation.

The investment bank now expects the Federal Open Market Committee to raise the Fed Funds target by 75 basis points in September and by 50 basis points in November. It previously projected increases of 50 and 25 basis points, respectively.

"[Fed] officials have sounded hawkish recently and have seemed to imply that progress toward taming inflation has not been as uniform or as rapid as they would like," Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said in a late Wednesday note.

He also outpointed a Wednesday report by The Wall Street Journal that said the Fed appears to be on a path to raise interest rates 75 basis points this month following Chairman Jerome Powell's pledge to reduce inflation even if it increases unemployment.

The WSJ report is "a likely hint from the Fed leadership" that a three-quarter-point percentage increase will take place at the September 20-21 meeting, said Hatzius, adding that hawkishness is overriding the case for slowing the pace of tightening that Powell outlined at the July meeting.

Goldman expects another rate hike in December, 25 basis points, which would bring the Fed Funds rate to a range of 3.75% to 4% by the end of 2022. The Fed has already raised interest rates four times, to a range of 2.25% to 2.5%. The Fed raised its key rate by 75 basis points at its past two meetings.

Powell reiterated his anti-inflation message on Thursday at the Cato Institute's 40th Annual Monetary Conference. "I can assure you that my colleagues and I are strongly committed to this project and we will keep at it until the job is done," Powell said, according to CNBC.

Fed Vice Chair Lael Brainard has also been among the Fed's hawkish voices. "We are in this for as long as it takes to get inflation down," she said in a speech in New York on Wednesday. Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester also spoke on Wednesday. "I'm not even convinced that inflation's peaked yet," she reportedly said on a Market News International webcast.

Now pricing in a rate hike path of 75-50-25 points for the next three meetings, Goldman Sachs also said its own financial conditions index has tightened on the hawkish shift in expectations.

"This should be enough to keep growth on a solidly below-potential path in the second half of 2022. How the drag from tighter financial conditions will net out with other key growth impulses in 2023 is more uncertain, and we could imagine the hiking cycle extending beyond this year," said Hatzius.

“Right then Holly, it’s just you left in,” he noted.

Alas, despite getting the third question right, Holly’s poor decision making culminated in choosing the wrong drop zone, which added zero pounds to her kitty.

With his head in his hands, Ben bid farewell to the young contestant: “No Holly, no! So close.”

He added: “I’m sorry Holly, that means we’re going to lose you at the end of the round.”

Fans watching from home were in utter awe at her errors, wondering if she has mistaken the rules of how to play the game.

“Turn off #tippingpoint it’s goodbye Holly, don’t think she understood the game to be honest #pass,” one said.

Greenleaf Creator Craig Wright Dissects the Series Finale’s Major Turning Points — Plus, First Details About the Spinoff! https://briefnews.eu/greenleaf-creator-craig-wright-dissects-the-series-finales-major-turning-points-plus-first-details-about-the-spinoff/ https://briefnews.eu/greenleaf-creator-craig-wright-dissects-the-series-finales-major-turning-points-plus-first-details-about-the-spinoff/#respond Wed, 12 Aug 2020 10:18:13 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/greenleaf-creator-craig-wright-dissects-the-series-finales-major-turning-points-plus-first-details-about-the-spinoff/ Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tuesday’s Greenleaf series finale. If you’ve yet to watch, you might want to before reading any further.

Although it was hard to rejoice watching Tuesday’s Greenleaf, knowing as we did that it would be the last time the OWN drama took us to church, we still couldn’t help but let out the occasional hallelujah. (Yes, it was that good; click here to read the full recap.) Joining TVLine to unpack the series’ ending — and the promise of a new beginning that it included — is creator Craig Wright.

TVLINE | Tell me about the decision to have Bishop die. Did you know that was going to happen from the start of the show?
I didn’t quite know it. I knew that the series was inevitably going to have to be about the eclipse of male power, because the male power in the Black churches, it’s like the sacred cow. It’s the thing you’re not ever allowed to kick at. So I knew that if we were gonna tell a story that had any live energy, it was gonna have to be about gnawing away, in the most respectful way, at the foundations of male authority. But I did not exactly have in mind that the Bishop had to die. As we got closer and closer to the end, I just realized that anything less than that was going to feel tired.

greenleaf-last episode spinoff spoilers craig wright interviewTVLINE | As if she hadn’t a million times already, Lady Mae really came into her own in the finale — that sermon was fire! Is it safe to assume that the spinoff will focus on her new role as pastor of the church?
I think Lady Mae’s new role as the pastor of this church or another church is definitely going be the tentpole of whatever we do next. When I saw her [preaching], it made me even more excited about the spinoff, because when you hear Lady Mae talking about how to love the past enough to let it go and how to look for the future, it’s just so exciting to me to do another chapter in the story.

TVLINE | Lynn Whitfield has got to have become for you what Jessica Lange is for Ryan Murphy: a muse.
A muse, a resource… She has as much if not more of a vision of what this show can accomplish for its audience than I do. And I have always thought of her as one of my most important partners, along with Oprah [Winfrey], in figuring out what the show is.

TVLINE | I feel ghoulish asking — Bishop’s body isn’t even cold yet! — but have you contemplated what it would look like for Lady Mae to find love again?
Oh, I think even if we trotted out Idris Elba with a Bible in his hand, Lady Mae would have a hard time moving on. But as Lynn always reminds me, Lady Mae is a sexual woman, a woman of passion and desire. So eventually, she would come around. But we can’t make it easy. If it was easy, Lady Mae’s character would break.

greenleaf-last episode spinoff spoilers craig wright interviewTVLINE | Am I right that you were laying the groundwork for a possible Tasha/Jacob/Tara triangle?
Completely. That was exactly what I wanted to do, because… well, it’s obvious why! Tara is so sweet and gentle, and Tasha is so, you know, fiery and a little bit silly — but adorable. I think it’s a great set of options for Jacob to consider as he continues to try to find his moral and masculine center as sort of the last standing male in the family.

TVLINE | Charity made an amazing transformation over the course of the series. What do you imagine the next chapter of her life looks like? Does Phil stand a chance someday, or is she as done-done with him as she said?
Phil won’t be back until Season 3 of the new show. But where Charity’s concerned… the most exciting thing to do when we see her next time is to find her being the peaceful and still repository of wisdom and strength. Just totally turn [the character] on its head and have her be someone who is a resource to everybody while her mother, oddly enough, is struggling to control the giant machine that she’s in the middle of leading.

TVLINE | Meaning the church, or… ?
A larger amalgamated church that’s living in the shadow of the Black Lives Matter movement and COVID-19 and trying to figure out what the gospel means in that immensely pivotal time.

TVLINE | Will Grace be a part of the spinoff at all?
Well, I feel certain that she will be a part of a story. In what way remains to be seen. Grace needs to go find her destiny. It isn’t in the church — at least not In today’s church. I see Grace more like Oprah. She’s someone who has to find a place in popular culture where she can really lead a secular movement.

What do you think? Based on Wright’s description, will you be tuning in for the spinoff? Hit the comments with your thoughts.

“But knowing now it’s compulsory to wear face masks, would that give you confidence?”

“Oh yes,” Miriam revealed. “I think people should wear masks because it protects other people.”

Manifest Boss Breaks Down That Wild Grace Reveal, How It Points to a Potential ‘Death Date’ Epidemic https://briefnews.eu/manifest-boss-breaks-down-that-wild-grace-reveal-how-it-points-to-a-potential-death-date-epidemic/ https://briefnews.eu/manifest-boss-breaks-down-that-wild-grace-reveal-how-it-points-to-a-potential-death-date-epidemic/#respond Tue, 14 Jan 2020 09:25:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/manifest-boss-breaks-down-that-wild-grace-reveal-how-it-points-to-a-potential-death-date-epidemic/

NBC’s Manifest this Monday one-upped any confetti-filled balloon gender reveal party by finding a most unexpected way to ID Grace’s baby daddy.

Having decided that they shouldn’t wait months to determine if the child Grace is carrying is possibly Danny’s, this week Mr. and Mrs. Stone went to the hospital for a proper paternity test. But before the nurse could draw blood, Grace heard her own voice inside her head, beckoning her to “Stop!” And thus the DNA test screeched to a halt, as Grace and Ben realized that the “calling” she just had was patched through Ben’s offspring.

Breaking down the reason for this wild twist, Manifest showrunner Jeff Rake tells TVLine, “I always knew that we’d have to take some extra pains to find ways to integrate the non-passengers into the story.” And though the pregnancy storyline has been on the books since Day 1 of the NBC series, “We got very excited in the writers room when we started riffing on what it could mean if the DNA anomaly [carried by the 828ers] could be passed along. That set us off on a real tangent in the writers room, in a very positive way. We realized that was a story worth pursuing.”

It’s also a story that “introduces new questions,” Rake acknowledges. Such as: “Is Grace herself having the callings, or is it the unborn baby inside of her? That gets answered by the end of the season.”

Also, as Grace herself was quick to wonder, does this mean the baby has a death date of its own, just as its father seems fated to die in June 2024?

“I’m not going to answer that right now, but that’s a compelling situation in Season 2,” Rake hedges. “Are there other unborn kids out there [carrying the marker]? Are there other ways the DNA anomaly could be passed from person to person, and therefore is a potential epidemic of people with depleting life spans?”

On a far lighter note, the plot twist offered a fun, unexpected and frankly sweet way for the Stones to realize that Grace’s baby is indeed Ben’s. “That’s exactly right. It allowed us to reveal the paternity in a way that was uniquely Manifest,” Rake smiles. “We’re always looking for ways to answers questions in a way that only this show could do, and that was one of them!”

COMING SOON ON TVLINE: Manifest‘s Luna Blaise previews how Olive feeling “left out” of the callings might steer her toward some very bad people.

Piers Morgan points out huge irony in BBC axing free TV licence for over 75s https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-points-out-huge-irony-in-bbc-axing-free-tv-licence-for-over-75s/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-points-out-huge-irony-in-bbc-axing-free-tv-licence-for-over-75s/#respond Wed, 12 Jun 2019 09:45:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-points-out-huge-irony-in-bbc-axing-free-tv-licence-for-over-75s/

Piers Morgan accused the BBC of “total cowardice” during a debate on the axing of free TV licences for over-75s. The TV host labelled the ban “ironic”, claiming if pensioners did go to prison, they would “get television for free”. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Piers pointed out: “The irony being, if they did go to prison, they’d get television for free. I mean what has it come to?”

Later in the show, Piers argued: “It’s just total cowardice. Where are you the BBC?

“Seriously, your job is not to hide in your bunker when you unleash these bombs.

“When you say to 3.7million pensioners ‘you’re now going to pay for your licence fee’. Your job is to come and defend them.”

A pensioner, Maureen Sales, also appeared on Good Morning Britain to discuss the BBC controversy.

She told Piers: “I lost my husband in an accident 22 years ago on our wedding anniversary, couldn’t have been a worse day at all, if at all.

“What’s happened to his pension? That’s what I’m asking. All his life he’d worked.”

On how important television is to her life, Ms Sales commented: “Well it is my life, it’s my family. I plan my day by my magazine every week and I sit and ring off everything I want to see and am going to see. Without that, I’ve got nothing. I live in the country very much so, very beautiful side of Sussex.”

The BBC has come under fire after announcing that, from June 2020, the concession will be available only to households where someone receives Pension Credit.

Only around 1.5 million households will be eligible for a free TV licence under the new scheme.

As part of the charter agreement which came into effect in 2017, the BBC would take on the burden of paying for free licences by June 2020.

From that date, following a review by the broadcaster, only households with someone over the age of 75 who receives Pension Credit will be eligible for a free TV licence funded by the BBC.

It is thought that around 3.7 million pensioners will lose out.

The new scheme will cost the BBC around £250 million by 2021/22, depending on the take-up.

Ex-Commons leader Andrea Leadsom told the Press Association: “I think that’s unacceptable. It’s a commitment in the Conservatives’ manifesto and we need to find a way to reverse that.”

Former Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey said she will back a campaign by ITV’s Good Morning Britain asking the BBC to reverse its decision.

She wrote on Twitter: “As someone who used to work for the BBC I am ashamed of them for this decision.

“Our ‘public service broadcaster’ who has forgotten the public they are supposed to serve. Agree with @RuthDavidsonMSP & @GMB campaign.”

Labour has launched a campaign to restore free TV licences for all over-75s, describing the move as “an act of cruelty”. Leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote on Twitter: “Pensioners have spent their lives contributing to our society. Providing over-75s with free TV licences is not too much to ask. Sign the petition if you agree.”

Nearly 300,000 people have signed an Age UK petition opposing the move, at the time of writing.

A similar petition on the UK Parliament website received upwards of 12,000 signatures while more than 50,000 also called for the licence fee to be abolished altogether, claiming the bill was “far too expensive for ordinary people”.

The free licence fee was first paid for by a Labour government in 2000. Under the Conservatives in 2015, ministers announced that an agreement had been reached between the Government and the BBC, and the broadcaster would shoulder the cost.

Eurovision 2019 Madonna: ‘Zero points’ Like A Prayer star SLAMMED for Song Contest routine https://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2019-madonna-zero-points-like-a-prayer-star-slammed-for-song-contest-routine/ https://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2019-madonna-zero-points-like-a-prayer-star-slammed-for-song-contest-routine/#respond Sun, 19 May 2019 00:22:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2019-madonna-zero-points-like-a-prayer-star-slammed-for-song-contest-routine/

Despite much controversy, Madonna performed at the Eurovision Song Contest’s Grand Final in Tel Aviv, Israel this evening.

The 60-year-old took to the stage wearing a black cape and an eye patch to perform one of her most iconic hits, Like A Prayer, and her latest single Future with Quavo.

Ahead of her performance, it was revealed her rehearsals had been closed and no one knew what to expect when she took to the stage.

And, it is fair to say that many of those watching were not impressed with Madonna’s Song Contest routine and took to Twitter to slam her performance.

“OMG! Madonna is BUTCHERING her own song! How did this happen? #Eurovision,” one viewer tweeted.

Another added: “Madremia Madonna, what a embarrassment.”

A third asked: “Is this the funeral of Madonna’s career? #Eurovision.”

“Oh dear God Madonna the voice is gone. Ouch. #Eurovision,” someone else shared.

Another went on to score her performance Eurovision-style, tweeting: “Zero points to Madonna. #ESC2019 #eurovision.”

However, not everyone was unimpressed with one fan sharing: “Ok. That was pretty spectacularly staged. I would’ve loved her to do Future first, but Like A Prayer was tremendous.

“She’s got a lower register now but was very nervous. Even though she’s Madonna. Would’ve preferred Medellín but hey ho. She’s my queen. Love love love. #eurovision.”

Before her performance, Madonna told tonight’s hopefuls: “You are all winners, I say that because to get here, you had to have a dream and you had to believe in that dream and make a lot of sacrifices.”

Going on to address why Eurovision is so important, she said: “Another really obvious statement is look at all the delegates behind us, everyone here is from all over the world.

“The thing, the one thing that brings me to those countries and the one thing that brings all these people here tonight is music.

“Let’s never underestimate the power of music.

“So to quote an amazing song, music makes the people come together, yeah.”

“So to quote an amazing song, music makes the people come together, yeah.”

Ahead of tonight’s Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final, Netherlands were the favourite to take the top prize.

Duncan Laurence found himself at just 8/11 with the bookies to be crowned as tonight’s Eurovision winner in Tel Aviv.

Australia’s act Kate Miller-Heidke, who performed Zero Gravity, looked to be the closest rivals of the Dutch at 11/2.

Unfortunately it was bad news for the UK the odds Michael Rice finishing in last place were at just 4/1.
