Moving on the host continued: “Okay, the question, on the nativity, for £3,000 is: Which of these events, commonly included in nativity plays, is specifically mentioned in the Bible?”

The possible answers were Mary riding a donkey, Jesus born in a stable, three kings bearing gifts or Angel visiting shepherds.”

“Alexander what do you think?” Oti asked the quiz show host.

The Pointless star remarked: “I’m flummoxed here,” before reading out the question again.

Pointless: ‘Come on!’ Richard Osman berates contestants over ‘obvious’ answers https://briefnews.eu/pointless-come-on-richard-osman-berates-contestants-over-obvious-answers/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-come-on-richard-osman-berates-contestants-over-obvious-answers/#respond Thu, 15 Aug 2019 17:50:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-come-on-richard-osman-berates-contestants-over-obvious-answers/

The BBC programme was hosted as usual by Alexander Armstrong who was accompanied by Richard.

The first board today was a picture round whereby the Pointless contestants had to name “famous Londoners”.

A total of 16 celebrities born in London were on the board to begin with.

The first three pairs of contestants went for some of the more well known answers which included David Bowie, David Attenborough and Michael Caine.

Each of the answers earned mid-levels scores in the 50s, and Richard claimed they were the “obvious” choices.

He declared: “I’m going to say so far we’ve been going for some of the obvious ones. This is like an episode of Pointless Celebrities.”

“It is a bit, yes,” Alexander laughed.

There was only one pair left to go for the first half of the round as it was player Mayo’s turn to answer.

Richard continued: “If I were say, Mayo, I might think there’s golden opportunity here to go low. But listen, Mayo you do what you want to do, you be your own man.

“That’s what I would do but come on, look at these scores.”

Alexander then chatted to Mayo about his hobbies before asking him for a answer.

“I’m going to try to go for an obvious one, but even I’m doubting myself,” Mayo admitted, which caused Alexander to groan.

Mayo plumped for Naomi Campbell in the end, which achieved the lowest score yet of 19 points.

Alexander was clearly pleased as he responded: “I think we’re breaking through in to new territory here, very well done.”

The round ended in a lockdown as two sets of contestants finished on the same score of 91.

Alexander and Richard then broke into little chant about the lockdown which delighted fans.

“It’s lockdown!!! #Pointless,” one exclaimed.

While another added: “You’re missing lockdown! @cjbrain77 #pointless.”

“My boyfriend is watching pointless with me and they are in lockdown and they sang the lockdown song. he’s so confused and I’m like ‘That’s it. that’s the show’. #pointless,” a third shared.

While Mayo was sent home after the second round, it was contestants Chloe and Geoff who made it to the final.

After correctly giving Ricky Martin as an answer to a question about Apprentice winners, they took home the jackpot of £4,250.

Pointless airs weekdays at 5.15pm on BBC One.

Pointless CANCELLED: BBC quiz show replaced at the last minute – here’s why  https://briefnews.eu/pointless-cancelled-bbc-quiz-show-replaced-at-the-last-minute-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-cancelled-bbc-quiz-show-replaced-at-the-last-minute-heres-why/#respond Sat, 06 Jul 2019 19:08:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-cancelled-bbc-quiz-show-replaced-at-the-last-minute-heres-why/

Pointless fans were expecting to tune in to see a noughties episode of the celebrity version of the show tonight but to their dismay, it was cancelled at the last minute.

The quiz show had been scheduled to appear on BBC One at the time of 19:35 according to TV guides, but it never aired.

Instead of being greeted by Alexander Armstrong and Richard Osman, viewers tuned in to be met with Wimbledon tennis and the coverage of the first mixed doubles rounds.

Almost ten minutes after the episode should have aired, Sue Barker, the commentator for the live tennis coverage addressed the last minute change to the tv schedule.

She told viewers: “If you’ve tuned in to watch Pointless Celebrities, that will now be shown at a later date, we’ve got celebrities winning points here on Centre Court!”

However, some quiz fans were not happy with the alternation.

Taking to Twitter to comment, one said: “Tonight’s #PointlessCelebrities has been cancelled because of ongoing #Wimbledon coverage. #Pointless.”

Another said: “Here we go! Stand by for BBC1’s schedule going out of the window (well the #Pointless repeat cancelled and the rest delayed) #Wimbledon.”

“I’ve tuned in to watch a 2 year old repeat of Pointless Celebrities on prime time Saturday night and what do I have instead??? Live tennis. Ridiculous. #bbc1 #Pointless #PointlessCelebrities #wimbledon,” someone angered.

“And yet again #Wimbledon messes up another nights viewing just stick it on the red button #pointless,” one fan said.

Someone else remarked: “.@richardosman #pointless ousted by Andy and Serena. I hope they will be on the show in the future to compensate.”

As for what was in store for tonight’s Pointless Celebrities episode, the competing duos were made up of stars who had found fame in the first decade of the 21st Century.

Badminton player Gail Emms, who won a gold medal at the 2006 World Championships was partnered with former super-heavyweight boxer Audley Harrison, who claimed gold at the 2000 Olympic Games.

As for who was representing the acting industry, ex-EastEnders star David Spinx, who played Keith Miller joined forces with Footballer’s Wives lead Susie Amy.

Also on the show was comedienne Katy Brand who was in a team with Brian Belo, who won Big Brother back in 2007.

The final pairing hoping to get the all important Pointless answer was Lisa Maffia and Marvin `Romeo Dawkins’, whose So Solid Crew first topped the UK pop charts in August 2001.

Meanwhile, with the popularity of the show, the BBC has commissioned a new series.

The official Twitter account for Pointless announced it was on the look out for applicants.

The deadline is February 1st 2020 for anyone to submit their interest.

Pointless returns on Monday night at 5.15pm on BBC One.

Pointless Celebrities: Richard Osman STUNNED as contestant makes quip about show rules https://briefnews.eu/pointless-celebrities-richard-osman-stunned-as-contestant-makes-quip-about-show-rules/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-celebrities-richard-osman-stunned-as-contestant-makes-quip-about-show-rules/#respond Sat, 25 May 2019 21:48:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-celebrities-richard-osman-stunned-as-contestant-makes-quip-about-show-rules/

Richard, 48, and his Pointless co-host Alexander Armstrong, 49, were on hand to welcome four pairs of real-life doctors and actors who have or are portraying the medical professionals in television dramas.

After introducing the contestants to the BBC quiz show, Alexander and Richard went on to explain how the first questions would work.

The contestants were told they would be given clues to various topics, with the answers they give also being the name of cities in Europe.

As the fourth pair to take on the board, This Morning stars Dr Sara Ryan and Dr Ranj Singh were given their chance to answer.

Alexander spoke to Sara about her career before asking her what she was thinking about the board and the clues to the answers left to her and Ranj.

Jokingly, the This Morning star remarked: “I think it’s unfair we’re fourth here, because all the tricky ones have gone.”

Following Sara getting a score of 17 for her answer, Richard commended the star on her efforts but also voiced his shock at the pair going last.

Richard said: “Well played, Sara. Terrific answer.

“And you’re quite right, it’s so unfair to make you go last and give you the lowest score, and then let Ranj have the first pick of the next board as well.

“What were we thinking?” the presenter asked Alexander, with the host replying: “I know.”

Continuing, Richard added: “Really terrible. So, goodness, well done, under such conditions. That is the best answer on the board.”

The game then continued, with Ranj being given the first innings to give an answer to the new set of clues on the board.

Earlier in the show, Sara and Ranj’s fellow This Morning star Dr Chris Steele told Alexander about how viewers go about getting in contact with the show.

Alexander asked: “As a TV doctor, are you told what you’re going to be covering or is it what has come through…the mailbag I was about to say.

“That’s from 20 years ago… things that come in from viewers?”

Pointless: Richard Osman rendered speechless as contestant drops shock bombshell https://briefnews.eu/pointless-richard-osman-rendered-speechless-as-contestant-drops-shock-bombshell/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-richard-osman-rendered-speechless-as-contestant-drops-shock-bombshell/#respond Thu, 18 Apr 2019 18:59:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-richard-osman-rendered-speechless-as-contestant-drops-shock-bombshell/

The Pointless presenters welcomed a new batch of contestants on to the BBC show today to tackle some more tricky quiz questions.

As is custom, they went round each quizzer to find out where they’ve come from in the country and what job they do for a living.

However, one contestant left them shocked completely when he revealed he works in a supermarket.

Joe isn’t just any ordinary shop worker as he revealed to Richard and Alexander: he takes on absolutely every role there.

At the thought of it, Richard gasped, while Alexander couldn’t quite believe what he was hearing.

The latter continued to ask Joe about his work commitments and it seemed the busy-body will never shy away from any job while on shift.

Sadly for Joe, the Pointless gods didn’t align for him and he was send home.

Meanwhile, fans of the BBC show weren’t happy with whoever had been interviewed for the answers on it.

Alexander put up a picture of Windsor Castle and asked the contestants if they could work out which famous landmark was being depicted from the clue: “W_N_S_R C_A_S_L_.”

However, a whopping 24 people couldn’t quite put the jigsaw pieces together and viewers weren’t too happy about it.

One said: “24 people couldn’t get Windsor Castle with the picture and the letters W_N_S_R C_S_L_? This country is f***ed!”

Another shared: “24 couldn’t figure out W_N_S_R C_S_L_ was Windsor Castle despite a great big picture of it above.”

A third simply added: “This is painful #pointless.”

Yesterday, viewers found themselves baffled as they spotted something rather unusual about a contestant.

Alexander and Richard welcomed Su’ on to the show and she did rather well.

However, some fans were confused by the rogue apostrophe on her name and flocked to Twitter to comment on it.

One said: “What’s wrong with ‘Sue’? Or Just ‘Su’ without the apostrophe?”

A second added: “Didn’t quite grasp the Su’, silly spelling of her name #Pointless.”

“Absolutely fascinated to know why Su’ on #Pointless uses an apostrophe at the end of her name,” commented a third.

Another shared: “#Pointeless Su’ what’s that all about?”

Pointless airs weekdays on BBC One from 5.15pm.

Pointless: Alexander Armstrong SPEECHLESS as Richard Osman takes swipe ‘Annoying’ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-alexander-armstrong-speechless-as-richard-osman-takes-swipe-annoying/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-alexander-armstrong-speechless-as-richard-osman-takes-swipe-annoying/#respond Sat, 30 Mar 2019 21:06:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-alexander-armstrong-speechless-as-richard-osman-takes-swipe-annoying/

Presenter Alexander Armstrong and his assistant Richard have worked together on Pointless for over a decade now.

The duo are used to teasing each other on the popular BBC series and tonight’s edition was no different, as Richard, 48, launched straight into taking a swipe at his colleague.

Tonight’s episode of Pointless Celebrities was musical theatre-themed, and Alexander, 49, introduced the pairs first of all.

Former Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer Joanne Clifton joined ex-soap star and performer Ray Quinn.

Phantom of the Opera and Jesus Christ Superstar West End star Ben Forster took to the podium alongside Wicked musical favourite Kerry Ellis.

Hannah Waddingham and Jenna Russell made up the third team, while ex-Blue singer Duncan James and Aladdin performer Jade Ewen completed the ranks.

But just as Alexander finished off introducing all of the celebrities and their various skills, Richard turned things back onto him.

“It’s annoying when people can do everything isn’t it,” Richard suddenly commented, staring his co-host down with a sly grin.

Seemingly puzzled by Richard’s thinking, Alexander remained silent.

“It’s almost like if you could sing,” Richard then noted, still trying to goad his co-worker.

The amusing scenes drew plenty of giggles from the audience, but Alexander refused to rise to the bait, simply giving Richard a smile in return.

Meanwhile, viewers were divided over the contestants on the hit programme, with some concerned they didn’t know who the “celebrities” were.

Taking to Twitter, one person asked: “Who are these people on #pointless #celebrities? Particularly #Hannah asking for a friend……”

“Well #pointless celebrities has excelled itself tonight – I’ve never heard of any of these contestants!” another declared.

A third agreed: “Never heard of any of them #pointless.”

Conversely, one viewer shared: “Well look at that. With @Jonnyishh and now @jennarusselluk turns out I know TWO #Pointless finalists.”

“Lovely to see @joanneclifton on @BBCOne #pointless you’re definitely brightening up the usual boring teatime Telly Joanne!!” another wrote.

And fans continued to show their appreciation to producers, as one person praised: “@joanneclifton and @hanwaddingham on the same episode of #pointless?

“Wow @richardosman you really are spoiling us.”

“#pointless I enjoyed that episode a lot – great winners too,” another fan enthused.

Pointless continues Monday on BBC One.

Pointless Celebrities continued this evening and saw a “TV special”.

The episode included a number of presenters and TV stars who were battling it out for the Pointless trophy, and some money for their charity of choice.

And while Bargain Hunt’s Charlie Ross and his partner Catherine Southon started off doing quite well, it quickly slipped away from them.

During a round where the contestants were tasked with naming the pop stars on screen, Charlie was left a little stumped.

Clueless to the people on screen, he picked out one star with a noticeable feature.

He said: “The next two down – wellI don’t know…

“There’s a chap in the funny hat there, I would say… who puts on funny hats?

“But I might as well say Boy George because that chap in the hat looks rather like him.”

Alexander Armstrong chimed in to reassure Charlie: “It doesn’t matter what you say here you are through… no red line.”

Charlie then locked in his answer and awaited the results.

He willed his answer to be correct, announcing: “It’s going to be Boy George isn’t it?”

He then asked his partner to hold his hand while the results came in, causing a murmuring of laughter from the contestants and the audience.

But he wasn’t ready to listen to laughter at his expense, as he jokingly yelled: “Stop giggling!”

Unfortunately for Charlie his answer was not correct, leaving Alexander to reveal: “It’s not Boy George – which takes you to 112.”

Richard Osman jumped in to poke at Charlie, laughing: “I do hope he’s watching!”

Earlier this week Richard announced the show should end after he asked a contestant a questions.

Speaking to former pop star Jamelia, Richard inquired about her Christmas traditions.

After she gave a thorough explanation the host announced: “Awe, Merry Christmas everybody.

“We should just end the show there because it’s not going to get any more Christmassy than that!”

Pointless continues Saturday at 7pm on BBC One.

Pointless: Richard Osman left red-faced after Alexander Armstrong INSULTS contestant https://briefnews.eu/pointless-richard-osman-left-red-faced-after-alexander-armstrong-insults-contestant/ https://briefnews.eu/pointless-richard-osman-left-red-faced-after-alexander-armstrong-insults-contestant/#respond Wed, 27 Jun 2018 19:11:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pointless-richard-osman-left-red-faced-after-alexander-armstrong-insults-contestant/

Pointless fans watched on as the BBC host spoke to contestant Linda, but ended up making a jibe about her looks.

The PA for a water utility company in the Midlands was first asked her opinion on the quiz board and to give a Pointless answer.

Alexander asked: “Linda, what would you like to go for? We’ve got some moderately extreme scores here.”

Linda replied: “Yeah, there’s one I definitely know that’s left and there’s one that I really want to go for, but I’m not sure I’ve go the nerve.”

The show host then tried to give a boost of confidence, saying: “I bet you know it. I bet it’s right.”

Hesitantly, Linda said: “I’m going to say. I’m going to regret this, but I’m going to say South African Formula 1 world champion – Jody Scheckter.”

Alexander repeated her answer, saying: “Jody Scheckter says Linda,” as the contestant confirmed with a “yeah”.

The 48-year-old presenter then said: “Do you know what? You looked like a ventriloquist when you said that.”

Confused, Linda pointed at her face and sighed: “Sorry. That’s the lines.”

Horrified that his words had sounded like an insult, Alexander rushed to explain himself, saying: “No it’s great. No, not like the dummy, you looked like the…”

Embarrassed, the audience chuckled, but luckily Linda laughed it off and jokingly snapped back: “Thanks very much!”

Alexander continued: “You said it… you said it without moving your mouth. It was extraordinary,” prompting Linda to smile: “I know.”

It comes after Richard Osman made a big revelation about the contestants that appear on the BBC One quiz show on yesterday’s show to his co-host Alexander.

The Pointless pair teased how contestants made up of family duos always cause chaos on the show, with Richard confessing they always “fall out very badly”.

Noting the line-up, Richard added the show comprised of groups of friends, saying: “The only returning pair from that show, Gavin an Nick, who are where they should be on podium one.

“It’s quite nice, isn’t it? They did well. They did do very well last time, yeah. They’re going to be tough to beat, I suspect.”

Alexander noted: “And friends, it’s a friends show! We’ve had a lot of parents and children.”

Richard then dropped his “fall out clanger”, adding: “That’s true, that’s nice isn’t it? No family.

“Because quite often when we have family shows they fall out very badly.”

Alexander gasped: “They can! Oh, they can.”

What is the Pointless trophy made of and how big is it? – The Saturday Briefing https://briefnews.eu/what-is-the-pointless-trophy-made-of-and-how-big-is-it-the-saturday-briefing/ https://briefnews.eu/what-is-the-pointless-trophy-made-of-and-how-big-is-it-the-saturday-briefing/#respond Sat, 10 Mar 2018 00:10:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-is-the-pointless-trophy-made-of-and-how-big-is-it-the-saturday-briefing/

Q – Following last week’s enquiry about the podiums on the Pointless quiz show, can you please tell me the size of the Pointless trophy and what it is made of, or indeed do they exist at all as we never see one presented to the winners.

Renee Huby, by email

A- The Pointless trophy is made of glass and is 12cm high, 5.5cm wide and 5.5cm deep (that’s about 5in x 2in x 2in).

I am told that if you move it in the light the centre Pointless part appears to count down.

These trophies are not only real and genuinely presented off camera but they have been known to be sold online by winners for more than £300 each.

PointlessBBC

Q – In the late 1950s or early 60s was there ever a big glass box at Chester Town Hall outside the old market with a dead whale in it? I’m sure I saw it but I can’t verify it.

TD Topping, Chester

A – I can’t be certain but you are very probably correct. During those years the bodies of three whales called Hercules, Goliath and Jonah were taken on touring exhibitions around various venues in Britain and Europe.

Amazing as it may sound today this was seen as good publicity for the whaling industry.

The whales had been hollowed out and festooned inside with lanterns allowing people to walk through them, starting at the head and coming out the other end.

Jonah certainly visited York, Coventry, Worcester, Oxford, Bristol and Plymouth, transported on a huge lorry, so could have stopped off in Chester.

Audie Murphy US Second World War heroGETTY

Audie Murphy played himself in the film To Hell And Back

Q – In the old film To Hell And Back I know that Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated American soldiers in the Second World War, played himself but my mate claims that he did not use his real name. Is it true that he was born with another name? Can you tell us what it was?

P Pope, Isle of Wight

A – His birth name really was Audie Leon Murphy and his father was Emmett Berry Murphy.

His name was real but he fibbed about his age in order to enlist in the US army after the attack on Pearl Harbor when he was only just 17.

Some say he was the most decorated US soldier of the Second World War but it depends on how you count honorary and non-combat medals.

After the war he made more than 40 films despite suffering from what would now be called post-traumatic stress disorder. For that reason he always slept with a loaded gun under his pillow.

Sixty Famous Trials was published by the Daily Express in 1938GETTY STOCK

Sixty Famous Trials was published by the Daily Express in 1938

Q – Can you tell me how old is the book Sixty Famous Trials by Daily Express crime reporter Percy Hoskins?

Jak Wilson, by email

A – The book was published by the Daily Express in 1938 and was edited by Richard Huson. Percy Hoskins, the Daily Express crime investigator, wrote the introduction.

By all accounts it’s a great book with trials including those of Mary Stuart, Captain Kidd and the Bounty mutineers.

It was 876 pages long and cost three shillings and sixpence. It still crops up occasionally in second-hand bookshops.

Blue disabled badge driversGETTY

Around one in 16 of all drivers has a Blue Badge

Q – Can you tell me how many blue disabled badges are issued to drivers in Sheffield? Also how many are there in the country as a whole?

J Crabtree, Sheffield

A – In June 2016 Sheffield City Council reported that there were more than 24,000 Blue Badges in circulation within the city, of which 225 had been issued to organisations (the rest having gone to individuals).

They reminded people that improper use of a Blue Badge can lead to a criminal conviction and a fine of up to £1,000 plus any costs awarded by the court and said they were taking further steps to prosecute those using the badges fraudulently.

In the whole of England there were 2.38 million Blue Badges held in 2016, which was 0.7 per cent down on the previous year.

The number of badges held has declined every year since reforms of the Blue Badge application process in 2011/12.

Since there are more than 45 million active drivers in the UK, and England accounts for about 85 per cent of the UK population, by my calculations that means that around one in 16 of all drivers has a Blue Badge.

TV detective Columbo played by Peter FalkGETTY

TV detective Columbo played by Peter Falk

Q – In last week’s Saturday briefing you wrote about the middle name of Quincy and the first name of Ironside, both of which were never revealed. While on the subject of TV detectives’ names, my question is about Columbo played by Peter Falk. Did he have a first name?

P Rhodes, Leeds

A – Again the first name of Columbo is never uttered in the series but there have been occasional shots of his ID card which clearly identify him as “Frank Columbo” and a signature seen on his badge gives the same name.
