German World Cup winner Lukas Podolski, who moved to the Japan Professional Football League last year, says that his team Vissel Kobe has every chance of becoming the top football club in Asia.

The 32-year-old forward, who retired from international football last year, having amassed 130 appearances, the third-highest total in German history, announced his transfer to Japanese club Vissel Kobe in March last year – much to the surprise of football fans.

Speaking to RT’s Stan Collymore, Podolski says that he has settled in well in the Land of the Rising Sun.

“It’s all good for now. I am nearly eight or nine [months] here now. The life is good, for me and my family. Everything is good: the food, the safety. People are friendly,” he said.

The third-highest scorer for Die Mannschaft is also positive about Vissel Kobe’s future, and is aiming to help the team become the dominant force in Asian football in the coming seasons.

“I hope that we can bring this club to another level. But it takes time, it can’t be done in one year. In three or five years we can make this club the team in Asia. This is our target, that’s why I’m here. To help the club on the pitch and off the pitch.”

As for the Japanese national team’s hopes for the World Cup in Russia this summer and beyond, former Bayern Munich and Arsenal striker Podolski was cautiously optimistic, noting that the right steps must be taken to popularize football more in a country where baseball is seen as the top sport.

“It would be interesting to see. There’s a lot of potential in this country. Japan has to push football in the next years, closer to the level of baseball. Look at the US, they have NFL, baseball, basketball, but they still have football, and they have a good marketing for it. And I think this is the key point for the J1 League, to push [the level of popularity of football] in the next years.”

He added that bringing big football names to the country is important, but it should be done to share experience with local players, not only for the sake of attracting fans.

“It’s important [to bring the big names], but it’s not everything. You can look at China. A lot of players went there, but they have moved back already. So it’s not only about bringing the names, it’s about making the Japanese players better, to make the quality of the J1 League better, to bring more Japanese players to Europe, and develop football [in the country].”

An estimated 1,000 fans stood in a five-hour queue outside the new kebab shop in Cologne opened by hometown hero, former Bayern Munich and Arsenal footballer Lukas Podolski.

‘Prinz Poldi,’ dressed in a hoodie, personally served customers, slicing chunks of meat from massive slabs of chicken and lamb and willingly posed for photos amid the media scrum.

“Opening a five-star restaurant isn’t my style — I’m not the type that wears a suit,” the 130-cap retired German international told local newspaper Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger. He will run the restaurant with two co-owners.

Having previously opened an ice cream parlour and a brewery, Podolski, who won the World Cup in 2014, was asked about whether he was using his status to promote junk food.

“As an athlete, you’ll burn an ice cream for dessert or a kebab in around 10 minutes,” reasoned the well-toned striker, who currently plies his trade in Japan with J-League side Vissel Kobe.

Asked whether this was the start of a post-retirement business empire, the 32-year-old replied that “ideas just come to him” and admitted that he “has no business plan.” Podolski’s spokesman later said that the footballer, who played his best domestic football with locals FC Koln, was “euphoric” as the enthusiasm for grilled meat “far outperformed expectations.”

Germans are not generally known for their sense of humor, but the Foreign Ministry has gone some way to counter that stereotype by poking fun at right-wing US media outlet Breitbart.

On Friday, Breitbart published an article headlined, “Spanish police crack gang moving migrants on jet-skis.” For reasons unknown, they chose to use an image of former German international footballer Lukas Podolski “as an illustration of a person on a jet ski” to highlight the existence of these alleged gangs.

Since Podolski is neither a people-smuggling gang member, nor a north African migrant, Breitbart had to apologize to the former Arsenal striker.

“There is no evidence Mr. Podolski is either a migrant gang member, nor being human trafficked. We wish Mr. Podolski well in his recently announced international retirement,” an editor’s note on an updated version of the article read.

While promoting an open day at the Federal Foreign Office on Facebook, the German ministry posted the same photo with the message, “Whether you are coming from Berlin, Hamburg, Munich or Cologne (Symbolfoto), we look forward to your visit.”

Adding that if guests planned on arriving via jet ski they should “please use the Fischer Island dock.”

The post seemingly struck a chord with Germans, gaining a respectable 3,500 likes since it was posted just after 10am Monday morning, and generating an interesting discussion in the comments, many of which applauded the office for its sense of humour.

“Nice move from the Foreign Office,” Damian Buschhüter commented.

“An office can also have a sense of humor,” Lars G. Kühn added.

“Even the ‘Foreign Office’ can be funny,” Elisabeth Schwan said.

Though many found Breitbart’s monumental gaffe quite funny, Podolski himself was reportedly none too amused, and according to his manager Nassim Touihri, is considering legal action against the publication.

“Lukas distances himself from it and won’t let himself be exploited. Our lawyer is already involved,” Touihri told German paper Bild.

Certainly, Southgate did not rule out a similar-style finale for England’s greatest goalscorer, despite the fact it would be unprecedented in English football, avoiding the issue by joking that a direct question about such a match had come after time had been called on an informal briefing following the game in Dortmund.

The England manager had, however, been willing to talk about such occasions in more general terms.

“People recognise those who have made 100 caps, we have always given presentations for that, and people acknowledge the contribution they’ve made,” Southgate said. “What we haven’t done, which maybe some other countries do, is evenings like tonight.

“I played in a game in Portugal where Luis Figo had a similar thing and it was a great tribute for Podolski tonight.

“You can’t always predict when the end is coming for people but we are trying to acknowledge and recognise our past more. Years ago we weren’t even invited back to matches.

“We asked Glenn to present Michael Keane with his shirt before the game because we want that connection with the past, and for the player to feel that and also recognise that the past is important for us as well, it is something we will strive to do.”

The only shame is that, on the occasion of his 130th and final cap, Lukas Podolski really had to be the star of the show.

Anybody who saw him in action for Arsenal will know just how hard the football gods were working to get the ball to fly into the top corner after he leathered it goalwards from 25 yards to steal the win from nowhere.

It was a bit hard-to-believe on a night that England largely outplayed their opponents with their only real fault being too many unconvincing finishes of their own.

Nevertheless, the DVD of tonight’s performance definitely bears a second watching, not least for the performances turned in by a few English contenders for best newcomer and Gareth Southgate‘s brave direction.

His vision for the future is clearly still very much a work in progress – but there’s a word that has not been associated with the England team for a long, long time. Progress.

Over the period of Southgate’s tenure – first as an interim manager and now as the permanent choice – regardless of results, his England teams have continued to improve.

Going forward, having had the bravery to switch entire playing systems against the world champions, you can only see that process continuing.

For all the tactical chicanery of switching to a back three, England came out of the blocks looking for the large part like a team that knew what it was doing.

Jamie Vardy had freedom to hunt down any defender he liked and when England had the ball, he sat poised on more shoulders than Captain Flint.

Dele Alli had a licence to invent and Adam Lallana provided the energetic runs around him to draw defenders and create space for him to do so.

Jake Livermore took a while to find his feet at this level again but with a fully-fit squad there are better holding midfielder to fill that gap and there was nothing about Michael Keane’s performance to suggest the Eric Dier cannot be employed further up the field than he is at Tottenham.

Unfortunately, Joe Hart’s composure with the ball at his feet is in danger of becoming an issue for country as well as club as there were times when the England defence were nervous about using the easy outlet back to him. Those concerns were underlined when Timo Werner nearly caught the Torino goalkeeper in possession after 36 minutes.

That said, it was a rare aberration and Germany’s defence more often looked like the flustered one and the best chances in the first half came from high turnover of possession.

Lallana may have been on the half-way line when he intercepted the ball, but he had a clear run at goal and was unlucky to hit the inside of the far post with his eventual shot.

Then when Ryan Bertrand stole possession on the edge of the Germany penalty area, Vardy intelligently toe-poked the ball on to Alli and the Tottenham player had time to do better than to shoot straight at the goalkeeper.

Forget the unusual blue away strip, it was Germany not looking their usual selves, but England, with their endeavour, could claim a huge assist in that.

Germany were better in the second half. Julian Brandt’s shot inches wide of the post just after the restart before Podolski fluffed his first big chance when he failed to get on the end of a deft chip from Toni Kroos.

Still, Alli had come within a whisker of converting a deep Vardy cross and Dier bustled his way through the heart of the German defence to fire in another shot on target.

The game changed, though, once Podolski let fly and final 20 minutes reverted more to type. Despite missing several of their senior players, Germany were able to dominate through to the final whistle far too easily as England’s energy drained.

But then that is the measure of the gap that Southgate recognises has to be bridged.

He said at the start of the week that he wanted to be the best in the world, and to do that you’ve got to beat the best.

That proved too much of a leap for the first 90 minutes of his permanent reign. But the next four years suddenly looks a good deal more promising.

Accomplished first 45 from England. Germany are showing that you can look completely unlike your usual selves even without an unusual away kit but England can claim an assist in that process – their defence clear doesn’t like it up ‘em.

More composure in front of goal would have added the gloss and thank goodness there is no prospect of penalties at the end of the evening otherwise you would have to say that would be the inevitable conclusion.

But having shown the system emphatically works, England now have to show the mental resilience to claim a positive result and not let their good work come undone as they did against Spain.
