We hope you weren’t dead set on buying one of Mercedes’ existing plug-in hybrids, as they won’t be long for this world. Autocar has learned that Mercedes has stopped producing PHEV versions of the C-Class, E-Class, S-Class and GLE. This doesn’t mean that the automaker is dropping plug-ins entirely, as you might have guessed. Rather, it’s replacing the whole lot with “third-generation” hybrids that will sell under the company’s electric-focused EQ branding.
The new system, mentioned earlier in the spring, mates a nine-speed automatic with the electric motor and clutch in the same unit, promising both considerably longer range in pure electric mode (up to 31 miles, or about 10 miles more) as well as a slightly faster top 87MPH top speed. You’ll have to lean on the gas engine less often, even when you’re mashing the throttle.
Just when the EQ models will arrive depends on how much you’re willing to spend. The first in line is the ultra-posh S-Class, which arrives in the UK this fall and in the US in mid-2019. Two E-Class variants (one with a diesel) are due by the end of 2018, while a C-Class diesel PHEV is expected in spring 2019. There’s no official word on a GLE replacement, although it may show up later in 2018. And if you don’t have a nicely-padded bank account, a plug-in A-Class is poised to arrive soon after the C-Class.
The push isn’t completely surprising. Mercedes has made clear that electrified vehicles are its future, and that includes hybrids for drivers who can’t (or don’t want to) make the leap to fully electric models. It’s just relatively rare to see an automaker wipe the slate clean so quickly and thoroughly.

Subaru just announced its first-ever plug-in hybrid, and it comes in the form of its third-best-selling car, the Crosstrek. This is actually fitting in a couple of ways. First off, it’s a quick-selling vehicle, but also because the Crosstrek was the model used for Subaru’s first conventional hybrid, introduced for the 2014 model year. Sadly, the company has yet to reveal photos of the new hybrid, hence our inclusion of photos of the old model.
The Crosstrek PHEV will also have a similarity to the Subaru BRZ in the sense that it benefits from Toyota technology. The company said that the hybrid system comes from Toyota. But don’t fear, Subaru fans, it’s still mated to a flat-four. The crossover will, like many other PHEVs, be capable of driving in full-EV mode and in conventional hybrid mode. The company hasn’t announced how much range it will have.
Subaru did reveal that the new PHEV is coming soon, with an on-sale date at the end of 2018. As such we should see photos and more details in the near future. While there aren’t many plug-in hybrid compact crossovers, there are a few, and they’re fairly compelling. The closest competition will be the Kia Niro PHEV, which has a claimed range of 26 miles and a solid 46 mpg when running with the gas engine. It starts at $ 28,840. Another potential competitor is the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which provides 22 miles of electric-only range and a less impressive 25 mpg with the gas engine. The Outlander does boast more cargo space thanks to its bigger body, but also has a higher base price of $ 35,915.

This point is even more important to the Honda Clarity, since it’s a considerably different vehicle than the bulk of current plug-in hybrid vehicles. The Toyota Prius Prime, Hyundai Ioniq and Chevrolet Volt all have dimensions similar to those of compact sedans. Interior quality and overall refinement are comparable to that gas-only segment, too.
The Clarity, however, is a midsize sedan. Its back seat is larger and more comfortable than all of the above, especially the Volt. It’s considerably quieter and its ride quality is indicative of the bigger, heavier car that it is. If you own a Honda Accord or other midsize sedan, the Prius Prime will probably seem a bit cheap and unsubstantial. You’ll feel right at home in the Clarity.
The interior is also a clear step up from other plug-in hybrids. With the Touring trim’s leather upholstery and leather-wrapped steering wheel, it is genuinely luxurious, lining up with anything Acura sells. The open-pore wood trim on the center console and doors is lovely, while the rest of the cabin plastics are hard to fault. Given this premium vibe, I was stunned to find that the Clarity Touring ($ 37,490) actually costs less than a loaded Volt Premier ($ 38,445). Sure the Chevy has parking sensors, heated steering wheel and rear seats, OnStar and wireless smartphone charging, but when you factor in size, refinement, interior quality and comparable efficiency (more on that later), it’s hard to see how the Volt should cost more.
Like other Hondas, the Clarity’s front center console impresses with its versatility. The unique cupholders have little tabs that flip up and down to equally accommodate large and small beverages (in this case a Yeti water bottle and a Starbucks tall). Brilliant. The raised “floating” console design also tapers inward to make it easier to access the bin below – in the HR-V and other so-designed cars, it can be tricky to see and grab stuff in what becomes a forgotten cave. One note, though: that bin’s bottom is hard plastic, allowing for your phone and whatever else to easily slide around. A rubbery pad would be helpful.
In terms of larger storage, the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid has considerably more trunk space than its hydrogen-powered and all-electric siblings. (Amazing how much space you gain when you reduce battery count and take out a couple of hydrogen tanks.) The resulting 15.5 cubic-feet of space is indicative of a mid-size sedan, and although there’s a gradual rise in the aft portion, the trunk itself is quite tall and there’s a covered well to store the portable charger and whatever else you’d like to squirrel away. No, it’s not a hatchback like the Prius or the Volt, but I’d wager it’s just as useful as those for most items – if perhaps even more.
One area of disappointment is tech. Although on paper, the Clarity seems up-to-date for a Honda, it in fact utilizes previous-generation infotainment and safety tech. That means you get the same frustrating, knobless touchscreen found in the Civic, and the same dimwitted, brake-happy adaptive cruise control found in Hondas prior to the current CR-V. Both could be dealbreakers.
OK, so now, the electric nitty gritty. I managed to go 52.9 miles on a full charge during my 72-mile evaluation drive that consists of some city driving, twisty mountain roads, and rural highway. That beats the EPA’s estimate of 48 miles, and given that my driving route doesn’t exactly cater to electric cars, color me impressed. I also was NOT using the Clarity’s Eco mode, so I theoretically could’ve done even better. My only other plug-in hybrid data point – the BMW 530e – went only 10.8 miles on electricity alone versus the EPA’s estimate of 15.
Now, in terms of the EPA estimates of its more like-priced competitors, the Volt is closest at 53 miles with a 106 MPGe rating. The Ioniq is rated at 29 miles and 119 MPGe, the Prius Prime is 25 miles and 133 MPGe, and the Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid is 26 miles and 105 MPGe. The Clarity gets 110 MPGe.
So, how come the Hyundai and Toyota get better mile-per-gallon-equivalent ratings, yet don’t go as far on electricity? The answer, most simply, is that they are more efficient when the all-electric range is exhausted. Theoretically, then, if the Clarity (and Volt’s) longer electric range allow you to more frequently drive using electricity alone, you’ll spend less money on gas.
Of course, you’ll also spend more at the dealer, but as far as the Clarity is concerned, you’ll also be getting a car that should cost more. It is bigger, quieter and more refined. When the all-electric range is exhausted, its operation in hybrid mode is impressively not that different. Since the electric motor continues to power the car – the gas engine works as a motor generator, much as it does in the Honda Accord Hybrid – it still feels like an electric car to drive. And, thanks to ample acoustic materials, that engine isn’t as noisy and noticeable as those in its competitors. Unless you really gun it, you may not even notice the change-over.
If there is one dynamic beef with this plug-in hybrid it’s the lack of one-pedal driving capability, or rather, a heavy regenerative braking setting. Pulling the “shift” paddles activates more aggressive regenerative braking for use on grades, but it immediately shuts off when you apply the throttle. One-pedal driving is one of the best attributes of electrified cars, and it seems like an oversight for the Clarity.
Nevertheless, I’m still quite impressed by the Clarity Plug-In Hybrid and really, of all the Clarities, it’s the most relevant. The Electric version taps out at a pathetic 89 miles and the hydrogen Fuel Cell version might as well be powered by dilithium crystals or unicorn dust for the vast majority of people in this country. Therefore, not only is this the strongest Clarity, but it’s also one of the strongest and most appealing plug-in hybrids – especially if you care about more than just electric range.

Porsche has released a new video highlighting its work endurance-testing a new generation of plug-in hybridCayennecrossovers that it says is due on the market soon. While details about the new PHEV are scarce, Porsche says the Cayenne E-Hybrid will have higher range than the preceding model and be comparable to the Panamera, its other line of plug-in hybrids.
Porsche’s U.S. retail plans for the vehicle weren’t immediately clear, and its representative in Atlanta did not respond to an inquiry from Autoblog. Porsche already sells the Cayenne S E-Hybrid and S E-Hybrid Platinum Edition in the U.S., plus the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid in six trim levels. The base-level Panamera 4 E-Hybrid offers 462 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque from a 2.9-liter twin-turn V6 and an electric motor, with a maximum all-electric range of 31 miles, courtesy of its 14 kWh lithium-ion battery.
The video show Porsche engineers testing the forthcoming plug-in in South Africa on rough asphalt roads and in cities, plus winter tests in Canada in -40 degree Farenheit temps and summer tests at high altitude and the sand dunes of Dubai at nearly 106 degrees F.
“The Cayenne has actually also been our door opener to hybridization. We’ve basically learned over time we need to upgrade the vehicle again in terms of emotional appeal and sport handling,” says Oliver Laqua, Porsche’s director of complete vehicle product line SUV. “Our new strategy, as predicated by the 918 Spyder and implemented with the Panamera, actually means that we offer the most emotional and powerful vehicle by far among all plug-ins in the Cayenne’s derivative class.”
The existing Cayenne S E-Hybrid combines a supercharged 333-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 with a 95-hp electric motor and a 10.8 kWh lithium-ion battery that make a combined 416 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of torque. Reports say Porsche is also planning a Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid making 680 hp and 626 lb-ft from the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

The newly announced 2019 Ford Fusion has a built-in modem that allows customers to access a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, monitor vehicle diagnostics, and access other services through an app. But what about Ford owners who aren’t ready to buy a new car just to get those features? FordPass SmartLink addresses this issue with a simple OBD II device that plugs in to 2010 to 2017 Fords and pairs with smartphones.
–
Ford owners who either missed the connected-car boat or chose not to tick that option box at the time of purchase can now press the redo button by installing a device. The service requires a two-year contract, priced at $ 16.99 per month, and the device itself is included as part of that contract. That subscription does not include the price of installation, which Ford says is required to pair to the car and sync key fobs with the owner’s smartphone. The service is exclusive to Verizon smartphone accounts for now.

In addition to integrating a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, which comes with a 30-day or 1-gigabyte trial (the cost after that has not yet been announced), the device adds numerous services and centrally locates them on the SmartLink app. Users can remotely start, lock, or unlock the car with the touch of a finger. Location services allow for near-live tracking and can be used to set up geofences for the car. Using an accelerometer, the system can also alert users if the car is bumped, broken into, or starts rolling for some reason.

Ford is currently in the process of equipping and training dealerships for launch of the SmartLink, but it is not yet widely available. Preorders are open, but customers likely won’t get the product until the middle of 2018.

A new device will allow millions of older-model Ford vehicles to be upgraded to include the same connectivity perks found in newer vehicles.
The FordPass SmartLink device will enable features like a 4G LTE WiFi, smartphone integration of key fob features (remote engine start, lock and unlock, vehicle health and security alerts), and vehicle location tracking. It’ll allow users to set “geo-fences” around certain areas to monitor, via email or text message, when the vehicle enters them — perfect for parents of mischievous teenagers. It also resets to the settings the last time the vehicle was in use, meaning the heated seats will reactivate if you left that feature on.
The device, which is about the size of a deck of cards and plugs into the onboard diagnostics port below the steering wheel, will become available to owners of 2010 through 2017 model-year Ford vehicles. It will be available in the coming weeks. Ford is working to educate its dealer network about the new option, since they will be the ones selling and installing it.
FordPass Smartlink will be available for $ 16.99 a month, plus installation fee, for 24 months. That includes the cost of the device, telematics services between the vehicle and Ford, and a 30-day or 1-gigabyte trial (whichever comes first) of the service through Verizon, the exclusive data provider, meaning Internet service is also extra.
Close observers of Ford may notice that the company first announced SmartLink back in early 2017. But Dennis Carnevale, FordPass SmartLink marketing manager, said the company decided to make the device compatible with the FordPass mobile app, which was already integrated with its embedded vehicle modems.
“From a customer experience point of view, it’s seamless,” Carnevale said.
Ford says its plans to have all of its vehicles built with similar connectivity by 2019.
