New skipper Tim Paine was lost for ideas as the home side crawled through to a 611 lead before sending the Aussies in to tackle the impossible run chase.

Pat Cummins was Australia’s sharpest bowler, taking a career-best nine wickets for the match, including a solid 4-58 from his 18 overs in the second innings on day four.

Australia sits at 3/88 overnight with Peter Hanscomb (23*) and Shaun Marsh (7*) at the crease.

Here were the major talking points from the day’s play.

FURY AT SOUTH AFRICA’S ‘DEADSET STITCH-UP’

Despite all but having the Test match in their hands before a ball was bowled on day four, South Africa bizarrely decided to whittle down Australia’s attack to breaking point for two entire sessions as their lead climbed to over 600 runs.

The Proteas didn’t look at all in a hurry on their way through the second innings. In form opener Dean Elgar was particularly patient, hitting 81 from a whopping 250 balls and 337 minutes at the crease.

The general understanding was skipper Faf du Plessis would declare at lunch and after he made his century, which is why viewers were left gobsmacked as South Africa continued after he fell for 120 with their tailenders beginning to arrive at the crease to smack the bowlers around.

Commentator and former Aussie leg-spinner Shane Warne was shaking his head at the move, claiming du Plessis’ refusal to declare was a “bad advertisement for the game”.

Veteran cricket writer Peter Lalor accused the home side of insulting the dwindling day four crowd.

Warne later claimed the home side was indifferent to the result of the match.

“I don’t think South Africa care if they win this Test match,” he said. “If they wanted to, they would have declared a long time ago. It will be a disappointing way to finish the game.”

South Africa eventually declared at 6/344, setting the Aussies a whopping 612 runs to win.

CUMMINS EQUALS JOHNSON’S RECORD

Pat Cummins wrapped up his series with the ball with a four-wicket haul in the second innings as the rest of Australia’s attack struggled through two gruelling sessions on day four.

The Aussie seamer grew into his own during the South Africa series, scoring his first Test fifty at the Wanderers in the first innings and wrapping up the fourth Test with nine wickets, his best match haul in his career.

The 24-year-old’s series tally finished at 22, equalling Mitchell Johnson’s record for an Australian against South Africa in a post-apartheid series.

WARNE: ‘I CAN’T FATHOM IT’

A polarising declaration wasn’t the only thing Shane Warne was ripping into Faf du Plessis about on day four.

With a target of 612 and two wickets down, saving runs was the least of South Africa’s worries to stem the struggling tourists’ run rate. It was safe to say Australia’s chance at victory was eviscerated as the final hour of the day dawned.

A moment in the field after Usman Khawaja was dismissed LBW caught the famed leg-spinner’s eye.

“There a things happening on the field I cannot fathom,” Warne said. “Why do they have a deep point?”

Mark Nicholas replied saying that cutting off a boundary here and there could frustrate a batsman into making an error.

HUMILIATING HISTORY LOOMS

The fight Australia showed in the opening session of day three only served to remind cricket fans of a glaring flaw that has marred this series from the opening Test.

Tim Paine (62) and Pat Cummins (50) combined for a 99-run seventh wicket stand as the fast bowler scored his maiden Test half century and the new captain batted on bravely with a broken thumb. It represented the tourists’ highest partnership of the series, underlining how their failings with the bat have seen them cave to a 2-1 deficit, likely to be 3-1 after this Test.

Suspended for the final match in the series, Cameron Bancroft was Australia’s leading runscorer with 223 runs at an average of 37.2. It’s a solid output from someone on his first Test tour, but if those are the best numbers being dished up you know the batsmen are underperforming.

Bancroft is the only Aussie among the series’ top five run getters.

Darren Lehmann’s men just haven’t been able to cope with Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada as the South African spearheads have impressed with old and new ball to mastermind Australia’s demise.

No Australian has scored a century so far in South Africa and if that trend continues in the second innings in Johannesburg, it will be the first time in 48 years an Aussie batsman has failed to reach three figures in a series four or more matches long.

LIVERPOOL NEWS LIVE UPDATES: All the latest news and gossip from Anfield…

Tuesday September 5

Klopp ‘tricked’ Barcelona claim

05:40: Jurgen Klopp used Philippe Coutinho as a ploy to make Barcelona pay more for Ousmane Dembele.

That is according to El Chiringuito journalist Eduardo Inda, who claims Klopp and Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke ‘tricked’ Barcelona.

“Liverpool never wanted to sell Coutinho, but there was a trick between Klopp and Watzke to make another player more attractive: Ousmane Dembele,” Inda said.

“The Frenchman could have been sold much cheaper to Barcelona compared to what they paid.

“The truth is that Borussia never expected to get €145m euros – the second most expensive transfer in history – for a footballer who cost them £12m from Rennes.”

Can to Juve update

05:00: Juventus are considering a raid on Liverpool and Barcelona to sign Emre Can and Andres Iniesta.

Both Can and Iniesta are out of contract next summer with both yet to sign new deals at their respective clubs.

And according to Italian outlet Tuttosport, Juventus are ready to pounce on their situations and bring them to the club on a free transfer next summer.

As of February 1, players who are due to be free agents at the end of the season can technically agree terms with another club.

It is said they are also interested in hijacking Leon Goretzka’s proposed move to Bayern Munich from Schalke next summer.

The report adds the Serie A champions already have the wheels in motion to get deals over the line for the trio.

Markovic to Fenerbahce?

04:30: Liverpool have received an offer from Fenerbahce over the possible loan signing of Lazar Markovic.

Markovic, 23, signed for Liverpool in a £20million deal from Benfica in 2014, but he has failed to live up to his price tag.

The Serbia international has been loaned out three times during his time at Anfield, with spells at Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon and Hull.

And Turkish newspaper Turkiye claim he has been offered a way out of Anfield with Fenerbahce keen on bringing him back to the club on a temporary basis.

Turkish clubs are allowed to make signings up until September 8 and it is said they are hoping Liverpool will agree to allowing Markovic to leave.

Altruistic or a ploy? Snack maker spurs FDA to redefine “healthy” https://briefnews.eu/altruistic-or-a-ploy-snack-maker-spurs-fda-to-redefine-healthy/ https://briefnews.eu/altruistic-or-a-ploy-snack-maker-spurs-fda-to-redefine-healthy/#respond Fri, 17 Feb 2017 22:28:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/altruistic-or-a-ploy-snack-maker-spurs-fda-to-redefine-healthy/

Next month, the US Food and Drug Administration will hold a public hearing to gather consumers’ thoughts, suggestions, and hopes for food allowed to be labeled “healthy.” The agency made this announcement Thursday.

The hearing is the latest step in the FDA’s months-long effort to modernize and redefine the term. They hope to come up with a fresh, science-backed definition that will help consumers make smart choices at the grocery store. That effort was spurred in late 2015 by critics who argued that the current definition is out of date and that food industry interests had tainted it.

But one bit of this story that might give readers pause: the criticism was spearheaded by a member of the food industry, which, of course, has its own interests for redefining the term.

Law & Order: SVU 400th Ep Recap: Mama's Ploy https://briefnews.eu/law-order-svu-400th-ep-recap-mamas-ploy/ https://briefnews.eu/law-order-svu-400th-ep-recap-mamas-ploy/#respond Thu, 09 Feb 2017 03:10:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/law-order-svu-400th-ep-recap-mamas-ploy/ In its first 399 episodes, Law & Order: SVU unearthed some truly terrible moms. But the one it chronicled in the procedural’s milestone 400th (!) episode, which aired Wednesday, makes most of ’em seem like prancing lightweights.

“Motherly Love,” directed by series star Mariska Hargitay, starts when a 15-year-old boy named Luke comes back to his mother’s New York City brownstone to hear what sounds like his mom struggling in the kitchen. Fearing the worst, Luke grabs his hunting rifle and approaches, finding her bent over the island in the kitchen with a man behind her. When his mom yells that she’s being raped, Luke fires and hits the man in the head.

Turns out, the man is really another 15-year-old named Trey, and Trey is Luke’s best friend. Luke’s mom, Nicole, tells Benson, Rollins, Tutuola and Carisi that she let Trey into the house to study but that she’d always had an odd feeling about him and that he attacked her.

But Nicole’s story soon begins to to fall apart, and while questioning Trey and Luke’s classmates, another boy named Ethan eventually admits that he’d been sleeping with Nicole and had gotten mad when she moved on from him and started messing around with Trey. Though she denies the accusations of statutory rape, her ex-husband — who is a psychiatrist just like Nicole is — tells Liv & Co. that Luke’s mom is a malignant narcissist who’s “like the best and worst woman you’ve ever met, wrapped into one.”

When the police find Trey’s semen on a towel in Nicole’s bathroom, contradicting her assertion that was he never upstairs in her house, Barba is ready to take her down in court. And he does a great job… so much so that even Nicole knows she’s going to jail unless she does something, quickly. So she tells the judge she wants to change her testimony: “Your honor, I would like to testify again. I’ve been lying. I would like to tell the truth. The real truth.” Cue a collective Whaaaa? from the courtroom.

Nicole then gets back on the stand and tells the jury that she was having an affair with Trey but she never told Luke that the boy was raping her, and that her son must’ve killed his friend because he had seen them having sex another time. And Luke is ready to go along with this terrible story until Liv gently helps him come to his senses.

“Your mother needs help, Luke, and it’s the kind of help you can’t give her,” Benson says.
“And it’s not your job to sacrifice your life for hers.”

So when Barba calls Luke back to the stand the next morning, Nicole’s son testifies that his mother did say she was being raped. The jury believes him; the shrink is found guilty of third degree sexual assault and murder. And when Barba asks Liv out for a drink after court, she tearfully tells him that she wants to go home and see Noah: “I just wanna be with my boy.”

Chelsea Clinton Lambasted For Using Barron Trump Tweet As Ploy [Opinion] https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-clinton-lambasted-for-using-barron-trump-tweet-as-ploy-opinion/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-clinton-lambasted-for-using-barron-trump-tweet-as-ploy-opinion/#respond Tue, 24 Jan 2017 14:40:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-clinton-lambasted-for-using-barron-trump-tweet-as-ploy-opinion/ Chelsea Clinton with microphone in hand

Many social media users saw Chelsea Clinton’s tweet about Barron Trump as one president’s child coming to the defense of another president’s offspring. This would have been the decent thing to do if that were indeed the case, but was it? Others saw this tweet about Barron Trump as Chelsea exploiting the First Son’s plight for the sake of getting a jab in at Donald Trump after her mother, Hillary Clinton, lost the election to her opponent.

“The apple didn’t fall far from the tree,” was repeated a few times in the comments laid out across the social media sites since that tweet was posted online. That apple fell and then bounced back up and attached itself once again to the tree, as Chelsea seems to have picked up the political habits of her parents. The Clintons don’t often let an opportunity slip by when it comes to making a political point. Chelsea’s tweet is seen below.

With Barron Trump front and center in the headlines this allegedly presented as a perfect opportunity for Chelsea to send out her dig at Trump, suggested many of the critics. It sounded like a gesture of concern, but instead Chelsea jumped on the coattails of the outrage over Barron being bullied online and sent a message conveying the “POTUS policies” are hurting children.

So what did Chelsea mean by “POTUS policies that hurt kids?” That is a question she’s been asked over and over again on social media, but Chelsea has stayed mum when it comes to supplying an answer. Many pointed out that this is another trait she’s picked up from her mother, who would also often remain silent when hard questions were asked.

Barron isn’t the first child to become the target of bullies online, but you have to admit that Barron has been bombarded in the short time that he has been in the public eye. From the time that Rosie O’Donnell attempted to diagnose him with autism by bringing attention to a video online doing the same, Barron’s hasn’t caught a break.

Now with this SNL writer tweeting that Barron will be the “first homeschooled shooter,” another round of defending Barron is in full swing. He is Donald and Melania’s son, but he has won the hearts of many in the nation who won’t standby and let people get away with this and that includes Chelsea Clinton. As one commenter suggested, Chelsea attempting to show concern over Barron was just a ploy to make a political statement.

Some social media users asked Chelsea where she was when Obama’s girls were being bullied online. According to an archived article from USA Today, White House aide, Elizabeth Lauten, resigned over her social media post that went viral after she said some inappropriate things about the Obama girls.

Lauten posted a letter on a social media site addressed to the Obama girls after seeing what the girls wore to the White House turkey pardoning event. Both girls were dressed like normal teens of the day, but for some reason Lauten felt they weren’t. She started her letter addressing “Dear Sasha and Malia.”

Lauten then went on to say that she realizes the girls are in those awkward teen years, but in their positions they need to show a little class. She ended her letter prompting the girls to “rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.” People on social media sites today asked Chelsea where she was when the Obama girls were targeted online with this post. She didn’t come to their defense, but all of the sudden Barron’s plight is important to her? Some find this very transparent and believe it is the jab rather than the empathy that was at the root of her tweet.

Chelsea would have made the tweet all about Barron if she was really concerned and not double up on the use of this venue to also take a swipe at her mother’s opponent, who just happened to win the election. Many saw Chelsea avenging her mother’s loss more so than voicing her concerns over Barron.

People were furious that Chelsea would use Barron’s plight to subtly attack his father, Donald Trump. According to Dennis Michael Lynch, that tweet prompted thousands of replies asking Chelsea what she meant about Trump’s policies hurting kids. The website suggested that it wasn’t a surprise when Chelsea didn’t answer any of those questions. Some tweets were a bit more anger driven than others, like the one seen below.

As a mother herself, you would think that Chelsea might leave the jab out of the tweet to at least make it look as if she were concerned about Barron without another agenda being neatly tucked into her message. As the child of the politician who just suffered one of the most shocking election losses in modern political times, she too may have wounds still festering. Using Barron as a smokescreen to send out a message condemning Trump is not the way to go about it. This is what many folks taking to the social media sites conveyed when blasting Chelsea for this tweet.
