One day after his controversial, Oscars-centric interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Hart is going on the defensive.
In an Instagram post on Saturday, the embattled comedian addressed the backlash that has stemmed from his Q&A with DeGeneres, in which DeGeneres revealed that she personally contacted the Academy and recommended that Hart be reinstated as Oscars host.
“When did we get to the point where we forgot that we all learn, then we all have the ability to grow and with that growth comes a wealth of knowledge,” Hart wrote. “You can’t change without a [sic] understanding of what GROWTH means… Please grasp this and use it in 2019.”
During Hart’s interview on Ellen Friday, DeGeneres had acknowledged the homophobic Twitter jokes that led Hart to step down from hosting the Oscars in December, after he had refused to apologize for the resurfaced posts. But DeGeneres relegated Hart’s critics to the “haters” category, telling him, “That’s a small group of people being very loud. We’re a huge group of people who love you and want to see you host the Oscars.”
Hart told DeGeneres that he felt “trolls” were responsible for the “attack on [his] character” that led him to step back from the hosting gig, adding that he doesn’t have a “homophobic bone in [his] body.”
Both Hart and DeGeneres quickly became targets of criticism after the interview aired: Hart’s apology was viewed by many as insincere, while others were disappointed in DeGeneres, a member of the LGBT community, for using her platform to support Hart.
CNN journalist Don Lemon delivered an emotional message to Hart on Friday’s CNN Tonight broadcast, saying, “This is the time to hear other people out, to understand why they might have been offended. And I don’t see any meaningful outreach to the LGBT community.”

Brexit. A word none of us knew three years ago now divides dinner parties in the United Kingdom and around the world. What it will all mean seems to be the main concern. But at its heart, it’s the biggest, most surprising constitutional change the U.K. has seen in decades. This is a country famed for one of the world’s oldest, slowest-to-change political systems — so much so that it’s never even bothered to write a constitution down on paper, choosing instead to rely on oral and legal traditions.
Now that tried-and-true political establishment has been upended by what University of Sheffield politics professor Matthew Flinders calls “a big cock-up.” That cock-up? Former Prime Minister David Cameron’s political calculation that he could silence the disquiet within his Conservative Party about the country’s relationship with Europe through a public vote. Many have blamed Cameron for misjudging public sentiment and gambling the country’s political future to settle an internal debate. But instead of blaming the man, maybe there’s something wrong with the political system that allowed a prime minister to take such a gamble. While revolutions over the centuries have dis-empowered royals — and dismembered some too — perhaps it’s time to rein in the politicians of the people and give more authority back to the crown.
Hear me out.
She’s so well-loved in this country that she could probably get away with it.
Politics professor Matthew Flinders on the notion of the queen using a veto
The U.K. is the father of the Westminster style of parliamentary democracy, now used to govern more than 2 billion people worldwide. According to the system, the largest party in the main house of parliament supports the government of the prime minister, almost always the party head. And here’s the rub: There aren’t many formal checks on the government’s power, as long as it maintains the support of its party. A second house in parliament (in the U.K., it’s the House of Lords) can revise and delay legislation but cannot veto it, and then the final hurdle is to get the head of state’s signature. The British head of state, the king or queen, hasn’t vetoed a bill since 1708.
But maybe she (or someone else) should. In an era where grand cultural shifts are pulling apart the social fabric of many Western countries, parliamentary democracies need a mechanism that provides a better check on the short-term whims of political parties in favor of the long-term interests of the country. Maybe it should be an elected official or president, maybe a more empowered House of Lords, or maybe the queen herself should have the power to veto Brexit.
Technically, after all, she already does. But not practically — in terms of tradition, that is. Meanwhile, the House of Lords recently has been flexing its muscle. “Right now the House of Lords is more powerful than it’s ever been,” says Flinders. The body considers itself “the one true opportunity to have a sensible conversation about Brexit.” And yet it still has very minimal powers to truly influence the end result of the biggest political issue in a generation. Prime Minister Theresa May’s government, for example, has recently suffered 15 defeats in the House of Lords over details related to the key EU Withdrawal Bill, but as long as she can muster the political capital, Mrs. May can theoretically force the bill back through without changes.
This isn’t just about Brexit. In recent years, some commentators have argued that the lack of meaningful action on climate change also can be linked to the short-termism and partisanship of democratic politics. While the House of Lords — or the monarchy, for that matter — is hardly flawless given that its members are privileged, unelected aristocrats, its life-appointed members (usually political veterans) can still offer a long-term perspective on issues often trampled on by the mud-slinging of modern politics. Too much pure democracy, after all, can be a bad thing. “When you look at Brexit, in many ways you can be too democratic when making big decisions,” says Flinders.
Of course, not everyone agrees with my framing of the problem, or my proposed solution. The institutions of the British constitution are “just one of the factors at play” that impact Brexit and other major political events, says R.A.W. Rhodes, professor of government at the University of Southampton. He instead emphasizes the importance of context and “realpolitik” in determining political outcomes. Meanwhile, despite the lack of a formal veto, the process of debate and compromise within the British parliament means power of the government never really becomes too centralized. Besides, before the House of Lords can take on a greater role, the body needs to be reformed and elected to help mend its “fragile legitimacy,” says Rhodes. House of Lords reform has evaded the attention of the public and major parties for years; electing the head of state for the same reason might require a revolution.
The populist success of the Brexit campaign came from its emotional appeals to “nostalgia, the Commonwealth [and] the Empire” as “a golden past” offering stability in uncertain times, says Flinders. And the ultimate figure of that stability and nostalgia? Surely that’s none other than Queen Elizabeth. Perhaps she’s the only one who could unite a divided country by stepping into the Brexit debate.
So is a veto out of the question? “She’s so well-loved in this country that she could probably get away with it,” Flinders says.

This week on The Good Doctor, Claire’s college roommate makes an unusual request, while Shaun and Morgan’s patient bargains with his brother over life and death.
Let us begin with Claire’s friend Kay (Witches of East End‘s Rachel Boston), who’s dying of Stage 4 ovarian cancer. She has a month to live, and Claire wants to make sure that she’s as comfortable as possible. And so she approaches Melendez and Park about operating on Kay. She recommends a surgery to remove a tumor that’s been keeping Kay in a constant state of pain. It’s not only a success, but leads to an unexpected discovery: The cancer hasn’t spread beyond Kay’s abdomen, meaning she’s a candidate for HIPEC treatment. With a second procedure, she’s looking at six more months.
Kay’s husband Dash (Dear White People‘s John Patrick Amedori) is worried that an additional surgery can backfire and take what little time they have left, but Kay is determined to go through with it. She also has a favor to ask — a really weird favor. She wants Claire and Dash to go out on a date. Like, before she’s even dead. Like, later that night. The way she sees it, this’ll allow her best friend and husband to move on once she’s gone. Claire and Dash think she’s nuts, but ultimately agree to the date. An awkward dinner ensues, but there’s definitely chemistry there.
Before her procedure, Kay asks Claire to promise her that she’ll give things with Dash a real shot. Claire says it’s too much pressure, which leads to an argument about Kay’s constant meddling in her life. (Maybe table this fight until Kay comes out of surgery?) Anywho… Kay pulls through following a minor complication. Claire visits her in recovery to apologize, and tells her bestie that she has to stop worrying about everyone else. It’s time to let her loved ones worry about her and what she needs to feel comfortable during what little time she has left.
Afterwards, Claire heads to Melendez’s office to thank him for all of his help. She tells him that he’s the most gifted surgeon with whom she’s ever worked, which is essentially her way of apologizing for overstepping her bounds with anorexic patient Louisa back in Episode 5. She says she’ll continue to report to Lim if that’s what he wants; he says it’s probably for the best. (Is Melendez waiting to hear the words “I’m sorry”? Does he think Claire works better with Lim? Or is there some other reason he doesn’t think she should work under him anymore? Hmmm…)
Shaun and Morgan, meanwhile, work with Lim on Santiago (Brockmire‘s Hemky Madera), the co-owner of a construction company passed down by his father. He takes a fall at work while holding a nail gun, which fires a rusty nail into his abdomen and ruptures his kidney. When the doctors go in to operate, they discover Santiago was born with only one kidney. His brother Armando (Colony‘s Gonzalo Menendez) is a match for a transplant, but before he goes through with the operation, he wants Santiago to agree to sell the family business. Santiago refuses, insisting he’d be giving up on their father’s legacy. Armando tries to get through to his brother, reminding him that Dad wasn’t such a nice guy, but Santiago won’t hear it.
Armando eventually agrees to donate his kidney anyway. He asks Shaun for the consent forms, at which point Shaun reflects on his own troubled relationship with his father, who told him that he wished he’d never been born and wasn’t worth the trouble. But Shaun knew his dad was wrong because older brother Steve always looked out for him, even when it made his life harder. The parallels bring Armando to tears. The transplant is ultimately a success, and Santiago thanks his brother for his kidney.
Elsewhere in the episode…
* Shaun and Lea visit a pet store and bring home a goldfish named Hubert — hence the episode’s title. But Hubert isn’t long for this world, and dies by the time Shaun returns home from work. Lea is upset, and proceeds to open up about what happened in Hershey. She explains that she went back so she could help her brother save the family’s auto body shop, but instead they tanked it together and destroyed their relationship in the process. The way she sees it, she’ll never be able to put her life back together if she can’t even keep a fish alive. Shaun then leaves the apartment with the fishbowl, and brings it to the hospital for testing, which proves the fish had a parasite. Shaun then takes Lea back to the pet store with the results and shows them to the cashier, who reluctantly agrees to let them pick out a replacement fish. Lea thanks Shaun for making her feel better, then gives him the sort of look that’s bound to melt a few hearts.
* Glassman goes in for his latest treatment. In the waiting room, a young cancer patient offers the former hospital head his yo-yo. Glassman tries to teach himself a few tricks, thinking it’ll help with his sequential memory. After his treatment, he goes to retrieve his belongings from his locker, but can’t find his wallet. He marches into Blaize’s office, convinced that someone stole it. She then retrieves said wallet from a box on her desk and reminds him that he asked her to hold onto it before his treatment. Glassman tells her not to read too much into it, but his forgetfulness seems to be another side effect of the surgery.

Pop megastar Rihanna doesn’t want President Trump using her music to pump up the crowd at his rallies anymore, becoming the latest in a series of pop stars to try deny the president their music.
Before Trump took to the stage in Chattanooga, Tennessee, on Sunday, Rihanna’s ‘Please Don’t Stop the Music’ pumped out over the McKenzie Arena’s sound system. Campaign staff threw t-shirts into the crowd, who had packed the 11,000 seater arena to capacity.
Rihanna herself was none too pleased to learn about Trump’s choice of tunes. The Barbadian singer replied to a tweet by the Washington Post’s Philip Rucker, saying her music wouldn’t be heard at the president’s “tragic” rallies “for much longer.”
Not for much longer…me nor my people would ever be at or around one of those tragic rallies, so thanks for the heads up philip! https://t.co/dRgRi06GrJ
— Rihanna (@rihanna) November 5, 2018
Rihanna’s tweet comes after she endorsed progressive candidate Andrew Gillum in Florida’s gubernatorial race. The singer and beauty entrepreneur has also dabbled in ‘woke’ politics before, donning a t-shirt featuring Hillary Clinton’s face before the 2016 election, and joining the anti-Trump Women’s March in New York the day after his inauguration.
While almost universally despised by the entertainment industry, Trump uses a diverse collection of crowd-pleasing hits at his rallies, often to the artists’ chagrin. Last week, Pharrell WIlliams issued Trump a cease and desist letter after his infectious hit ‘Happy’ reverberated through a rally in Indiana – hours after a gunman massacred 11 worshippers at a Pittsburgh synagogue.
“There was nothing ‘happy’ about the tragedy inflicted upon our country on Saturday and no permission was granted for your use of this song for this purpose,” read the rapper-turned pop star’s snarky legal letter.
Rihanna and Pharrell join a long list of stars grumbling about Trump’s use of their music. Adele, Neil Young, Aerosmith and Guns ‘n’ Roses frontman Axl Rose have all tried to prevent the president from playing their hits.
Unfortunately, most of these attempts have failed. Despite the artist’s wishes, permission to play these songs at public events is granted by their copyright holders, rather than the artists themselves. Venues are granted permission by one of two organizations – The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI). While these organizations occasionally allow artists to opt out, the venues generally enjoy blanket rights to play whatever they want.
Since his campaign days, Trump has closed his rallies with the Rolling Stones’ ‘You Can’t Always Get What You Want’ and there’s nothing the Stones can do about it.
“So, the thing is,” frontman Mick Jagger explained, “when you appear in America…if you’re in a public place like Madison Square Garden or a theater, you can play any music you want, and you can’t be stopped.”
While musicians often get salty about their least favorite president co-opting their most-loved hits, Trump himself has lashed out when musicians comment on his politics. When Taylor Swift – until recently a famously apolitical, all-American icon – declared last month that she would be supporting Democrats in her home state of Tennessee, Trump fired back.

“Let’s say that I like Taylor’s music about 25 percent less now, OK?” he told reporters, evidently wounded by Swift’s dive into the murky pond of identity politics.
As for Rihanna, unless Trump decides to voluntarily stop playing her music, and unless she decides to fight a long and costly legal battle, the singer would do well to heed the famous words of Mick Jagger: You can’t always get what you want.

Google Chrome is the tech giant’s solution to navigating the internet.
It is widely considered to be the most popular browser around.
Google regularly updates Chrome with new and subtle changes that drastically improve user experiences.
The company’s latest tweak brings native notification support for Windows 10 users.
This means when people using Microsoft’s operating system get an alert from Google Chrome it will appear in the Action Centre.
Such a move from Google allows its browser and the notification system present on Windows 10 to be more unified than ever.
Confirming the update Peter Beverloo, an employee at the tech giant working on its Web Platform, said: “We’re now rolling out support for native notifications in Chrome 68 using the Windows 10 Action Centre—super exciting! Would love to hear your feedback!”
Prior to the addition, Google Chrome would alert Windows 10 users by using its own notification system.
Although Windows 10 lovers are treated to this new functionality, anyone running older versions of the Microsoft software will receive Chrome notifications the old way.
According to Thurrott, the feature has only reached around 50 percent of people currently using the latest version of Chrome, 68.
This means if you do not currently have access to the addition it will surely be coming soon.
As well as dealing with notifications better than ever, Chrome 68 also boasts a host of new security improvements.
The browser will now alert users when they are on HTTP pages by labelling them as “not secure”.
HTTP differs from HTTPS because it lacks the encryption technology of the latter.
This means connections are less secure overall and users are at a greater risk when consuming content through them.
Emily Schechter, Chrome Security Product Manager, insisted the move was made because security is one of Google’s “core principles”.
He stated: “Security has been one of Chrome’s core principles since the beginning—we’re constantly working to keep you safe as you browse the web.
“Nearly two years ago, we announced that Chrome would eventually mark all sites that are not encrypted with HTTPS as ‘not secure’.
“This makes it easier to know whether your personal information is safe as it travels across the web, whether you’re checking your bank account or buying concert tickets.”
