It was not immediately clear how the deal will be structured for Butina. US District Judge Tanya Chutkan in Washington scheduled a hearing for Wednesday.

Man pleads guilty to swatting attack that led to death of Kansas man

Federal prosecutors in Kansas announced Tuesday that a 25-year-old Californian has admitted that he caused a Wichita man to be killed at the hands of local police during a swatting attack late last year.

Swatting is a way to harass or threaten someone by calling in a false threat to law enforcement, and, when successful, it usually results in a police SWAT team showing up needlessly at its victim’s house.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Kansas, Tyler Barriss pleaded guilty to making a false report resulting in a death, cyberstalking, and conspiracy. He also admitted that he was part of “dozens of similar crimes in which no one was injured.”

Did we say that all the ‘celebgate’ perpetrators had faced justice? Well, not quite. A fifth person embroiled in the incident, Virginia resident Chris Brannan, has pleaded guilty to unauthorized access and identity theft charges for his part in the data leaks. He used a combination of phishing emails and simple social engineering efforts (such as hunting Facebook accounts for answers to security questions) to obtain logins for iCloud and email accounts to harvest their data. He compromised more than 200 accounts for “celebrities and noncelebrities,” using software to comb iCloud accounts for nude photos and other sensitive info.

Brannan faces a maximum seven years in prison for the combined charges, but there’s a real possibility he won’t receive the full sentence when sentencing takes place on January 25th, 2019. The parties involved have offered a non-binding recommendation of 34 months in prison.

If the federal judge uses the recommendation, Brannan could face one of the stiffer sentences of the group. Others have seen sentences under two years, or as little as eight months. Such a penalty wouldn’t necessarily deter other would-be account hijackers, but it would indicate that they could get considerably more than a slap on the wrist.

“Our bond is strong but some are doubting the strength of that bond. And yes we see differences between the United States and other allies over issues such as trade, climate and the Iran nuclear deal.”

“It is not written in stone that the transatlantic bond will survive forever but I believe we will preserve it,” he added.

Stoltenberg’s plea for unity comes ahead of a summit of the 29-member alliance, expected to take place in Brussels on July 11 or 13, either side of US President Donald Trump’s visit to the UK.

The summit is said to be one of the most fraught in the organization’s history with US President Donald Trump at loggerheads with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on a slew of issues, chief amongst them his demands that European allies spend more on defense.

Currently, only five NATO members are spending the 2 percent minimum of GDP on defense as demanded by the US president, with the UK among them.

In March, US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin announced that members looking for exemptions from US steel and aluminum tariffs might be asked to step up their contributions to the organisation, a sign of potential threats Trump may cite when he touches down in Europe.

During his speech, Stoltenburg praised the the UK as “instrumental” in the success of the alliance and that it led by example when it came to defence spending.

Stoltenberg’s visit and comments are likely to delight officials and ministers at the Ministry of Defence, said to be suffering from “shockwaves” after a heated meeting between Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson, May, and Chancellor Mark Hammond earlier this week

According to the Financial Times, Williamson was told to rethink the capabilities needed to be a “tier one” military power and focus more on Britain’s ability to tackle any cyber warfare threats, including from Russia.

While a Downing Street spokesperson has since reaffirmed the prime minister’s commitment to Britain remaining a “leading military power,” ministers at the MoD have been canvassing heavily for an upgrade of conventional military capabilities, insisting that Russia is not content with merely launching cyber attacks.

Writing in The Times ahead of Stoltenberg’s speech, Williamson spoke mainly of the importance NATO played to European security at a “pivotal moment in our nation’s history,” but also sided with Trump in demanding other nations spend more on defence.

He said: “We welcome the fact that many European allies are increasing their defence spending but our continent has to take greater responsibility for its own security. Europe cannot expect to outsource its defenses to American taxpayer.”

On Wednesday, Armed Forces Minister Mark Lancaster MP told the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) annual Land Power conference that Russia was not content with cyber operations and proxy conflicts for fear of “getting its hands dirty.”

Calling it a “myth” that Russia wouldn’t use “hard power” in the future, Lancaster said investing in cyber defence capabilities was not enough and that maintaining and upgrading its traditional forces remained essential.

Williamson and the MoD are currently compiling a review of future plans of its armed forces and where savings can be made to make up for a funding shortfall that could reach £20 billion ($ 26.2 billion).

Due to report in the autumn, much of the funding drain is caused by spending plans for new warships and nuclear submarines, as well as the modernization of the Royal Air Force’s fighter fleet with the F-35 Lightning II.

Carl Ferrer, the co-founder of Backpage, the notorious and now-shuttered site that once hosted a vast quantity of prostitution-related ads, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and money laundering charges.

The CEO, in a federal plea agreement unsealed in federal court in Arizona on Thursday, admitted that during the 14 years of the site’s existence, “the great majority” of Backpage’s allegedly hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue came from placing illegal ads for prostitution.

The deal was made public just three days after Backpage was seized, and seven men allegedly involved in creating and operating Backpage were indicted on prostitution and money laundering charges. Ferrer’s name did not appear in that indictment.

The document, published by The Guardian, found that a drop in the number of bobbies policing the streets of London “likely contributed” to the city’s rise in knife crime and violence, which has already claimed around 55 lives since the start of the year. Nine were killed last week alone.

On Sunday, Rudd claimed that government cuts to the forces were not the primary reason for the spike in crime. When asked about her own department’s leaked document, she denied ever seeing it, before insisting on Monday’s BBC Radio 4 Today program: “It is not all about police numbers. I think it is a mistake, and we do a disservice to the communities and the families who have seen these tragedies, by just pointing to police numbers.”

Police budgets have been shrinking ever since the Tories gained power in 2010.

The number of police officers suffered a 20,000 cut as Home Office statistics show it fell from 143,734 in March 2010 to 123,142 in March 2017.

Rudd is now accused of ignoring research from her own department. Shadow policing minister Louise Haigh said Rudd has “serious questions” to answer over the leak. Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Haigh said: “She [Rudd] had in front of her Home Office research that suggested that resources dedicated to serious violence have come under pressure and that it is therefore likely to be a factor in the rise in violent crime.”

She added: “Either she saw that research and chose to say the exact opposite, or she commissioned that research and didn’t see it. Either she’s incompetent, or she chose to mislead the public.”

But Prime Minister Theresa May’s former chief of staff Nick Timothy came to Rudd’s defense, tweeting:

Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy, who has seen four deaths in his own constituency, spearheaded claims that police are “vanishing” from the streets.

“It feels like neighborhood policing has vanished, it’s not around you. We haven’t seen police in a while and I’ve been here for quite a while now,” Lammy told the BBC on Friday.

17-year-old Tanesha Melbourne-Blake was among those killed in the north London district. She was shot dead on April 2 in the Tottenham area of Chalgrove Road in what is believed to have been a drive-by killing.

The presenter was teasing  about receiving direct messages on social media when she turned the topic of conversation to his messages to the Suits star.

It came after Piers joked fellow ITV presenter Charlotte Hawkins was responsible for ending Brendan Cole’s Strictly Come Dancing career.

After mocking weatherman Alex Beresford’s efforts on Dancing On Ice, he turned to the 42-year-old and said: “Don’t you get involved!”

“I’m keeping quiet,” Charlotte replied.

Piers continued: “You ended Brendan Cole’s career!” as Charlotte covered her mouth in shock.
