Having trouble deciding what to watch on Netflix? Well, now there’s a button for that.

The streamer is rolling out a new “Shuffle Play” button on smart TVs equipped with the Netflix app, according to our sister site Variety. When pressed, the button will start a random movie or TV show that corresponds to the user’s recommendations or are similar to titles the user has watched in the past. The button can be found either underneath the profile row in the startup screen, on the home screen of a user’s profile or on the TV menu sidebar.

“The purpose of the test is to make it easier for members to find something to watch,” a Netflix spokesperson tells Variety, adding that the streamer aims to roll out a permanent “shuffle” feature to all users at some point: “The hope is to absolutely productize something.”

Last year, Netflix tested a “Random Episode” button that allowed users to choose to watch a random episode of their favorite TV shows, rather than having to choose a specific episode manually. The button was only available to Android users, however, and still hasn’t been rolled out to all Netflix users.

Would you roll the dice and hit “Shuffle Play” to let Netflix pick your next movie or TV show? Hit the comments and share your thoughts.

Netflix‘s adaptation of The Umbrella Academy comics have proven a hit and the second season is out now. The series has attracted a lot of new attention and there are plenty of fans watching the first season. Fans are keen to find out who plays Leonard Peabody in the series, and Express.co.uk has everything you need to know.

Who plays Leonard in The Umbrella Academy?

Leonard Peabody is introduced at the start of season one and he introduces himself as one of Vanya’s (played by Ellen Page) new violin students.

He seems to take a liking to her and the pair form a romantic relationship, but he is not the man Vanya thinks he is.

Leonard is played by American actor John Magaro, who was born in Ohio and has been active as an actor since 2005.

He is known for his roles in Not Fade Away, The Big Short and Orange Is the New Black.

The 37-year-old made his Broadway debut in The Front Page in 2016, playing the role of Earl Williams.

He began taking part in local theatre classes while he was at school, and as a child, he appeared in a few TV commercials.

After school, he studied theatre at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, and his first role was in the film Prisoners of War in 2005.

His role as Leonard Peabody in The Umbrella Academy in 2019 was his first main role in a TV series.

Fans would have recognised him from his role as Vince Muccio in the Netflix hit, Orange Is the New Black.

Leonard had been born Harold Jenkins – a child who was born on the same day as the Hargreeves family.

He believed he had special powers like them, but he was ridiculed when he tried to join The Umbrella Academy.

In an act of vengeance, he stole a notebook containing secrets about Vanya’s hidden powers, and he used her in order to release her hidden abilities.

Vanya ended up getting her revenge on him after she found out the truth about what he had done, and she later killed him.

In an interview, he said he always knew the “basics” of his character Leonard.

He said: “I kind of always had an idea of where he was going, and we were trying to write that line of this guy is kind of a weirdo.

“Ellen’s character is so vulnerable, she has never had anyone give her any attention at all – so I get why some people were like ‘I get why she’s hanging around him.

“He’s a total gas lighter, he’s a total manipulator, it’s a very abusive relationship.”

He said the biggest surprise was reading the information about Leonard’s childhood as Harold Jenkins.

He said: “We never talked about that… seeing that stuff happen, that was a real surprise to me.”

The Umbrella Academy is available to watch on Netflix now.

Umbrella Academy cast: Who plays Harlan in The Umbrella Academy? Like Vanya, he seemed unable to control his ability to manipulate sounds waves and move things.

Harlan appeared frightened by his powers and so could accidentally end up triggering another apocalypse without meaning to.

Harlan seemed to be left to his own devices as season two ended, another worrying sign about what could happen without any guidance.

Hopefully, there’s a way Vanya could be reunited with Harlan and save from himself before it’s too late.

Fans are now waiting eagerly for news about a renewal for The Umbrella Academy season three, but viewers could be waiting a little while.

The streaming service took several months to decide whether to give season two the go-ahead, so there could be a similar wait for more news.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comics of the same name by My Chemical Romance’s lead singer Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, so there is plenty more source material for the show to draw on should it continue.

The Umbrella Academy seasons 1 & 2 are streaming on Netflix now

Love, Victor Review: Hulu’s Feel-Good Sequel Series Plays It a Little Too Safe https://briefnews.eu/love-victor-review-hulus-feel-good-sequel-series-plays-it-a-little-too-safe/ https://briefnews.eu/love-victor-review-hulus-feel-good-sequel-series-plays-it-a-little-too-safe/#respond Sun, 14 Jun 2020 17:58:32 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/love-victor-review-hulus-feel-good-sequel-series-plays-it-a-little-too-safe/

RELATED STORIES

It’s been just over two years since the theatrical release of Love, Simon, the 2018 rom-com that broke new ground as the first major studio film to center on a gay teen romance. The movie is a charming and inoffensive coming-of-age flick — and your opinion of the film will likely dictate how much you enjoy Love, Victor, Hulu’s sequel series that features all the same heart, but too little innovation in its storytelling.

Love, Victor — now premiering Wednesday, June 17; I’ve seen all 10 episodes — stars Michael Cimino (Annabelle Comes Home) as the title character, a 15-year-old who is struggling with his sexuality as he adjusts to a new city and a nerve-wracking transition to Creekwood High School. You certainly don’t have to have seen Love, Simon in order to jump right in with the series; Love, Victor quickly catches viewers up on Simon Spier’s time at Creekwood, and Nick Robinson returns as Simon (via voiceover) when he and Victor strike up a friendship over Instagram DMs.

Though the show has 10 half-hour installments at its disposal — which seemed ripe for a more thorough, complex exploration of teenage sexuality than a two-hour movie could offer — Love, Victor only seems to scratch the surface of its storytelling possibilities, opting instead for narrative choices that feel a bit easy and predictable. As Victor tells Simon in the show’s trailer, “My story is confusing. Some guys like guys. Some guys like girls. Some guys like both. I’m not even sure what I like.” But rather than dive into the nuances of love and attraction — especially the topic of bisexuality, which is underrepresented and often mishandled in pop culture — Love, Victor often chooses to stay in the shallow end and cover much of the same ground as the film.

Love Victor ReviewIn fact, when the show does directly address the tangled web that sexuality can be, it all feels a bit Afterschool Special-y. “Sexuality is a spectrum!” Victor effuses in one of his chats with Simon, as though it’s the first time anyone has had that thought, while another character later refers to sexuality as “less of a straight line, and more like a Cirque du Soleil show.” But even as it alludes to the messy process of discovering one’s own sexuality, Love, Victor rarely executes any of the big swings that it seems to set up for itself. (That said, the show was originally ordered at Disney+ before it relocated to Hulu earlier this year, which could explain its fairly tame representation of thorny topics.)

Though it doesn’t take as many bold chances as I’d hoped it would, Love, Victor does still possess an undeniable charm. The follow-up is co-created by Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, who wrote the Love, Simon screenplay — and they’ve certainly perfected the formula for a good, old-fashioned tug on the heartstrings. Given the tumultuous times in which we’re living, Love, Victor’s easy warmth is certainly comforting.

The series also boasts a delightful ensemble: Rachel Hilson (as Victor’s female love interest, Mia) and Anthony Turpel (as Victor’s eccentric neighbor, Felix) are standouts, and the show brings some well-paced character development to each of the Creekwood High students, transforming them from teen stereotypes into fascinating, fully realized human beings. In fact, it sometimes feels as though Victor isn’t in the spotlight enough, as some episodes largely sideline his self-discovery in favor of other storylines. But Victor’s group of friends is so enjoyable to watch — even popular jerk Andrew has interesting shades! — that it’s hard to mind when Victor’s journey takes a backseat.

For those who adored Love, Simon, its TV sequel will likely offer some cozy familiarity (along with a few fun Easter eggs), and telling LGBT-centric stories remains as crucial as ever. I only wish the show had been a bit more daring: If Simon Spier could ride that ferris wheel alone in front of the entire school, surely Victor could take some bigger risks, too.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Love, Victor delivers the same amount of heart as the film that inspired it, but it misses an opportunity for bold storytelling and a more complex examination of sexuality.

In the new series, Joe (played by Penn Badgley) tries to turn his life around by moving to Los Angeles. There, he becomes close to the Quinn family and the Alves, two families that are worlds apart. By episode six, titled Farewell, My Bunny, things take a dark turn for Joe’s neighbour, Delilah Alves.

She is a investigate journalist and building manager of the apartment block Joe/Will lives in when he arrives in Los Angles.

After getting off on the wrong foot, Joe and Delilah became friends and even spent the night together on several occasions.

Delilah also has a younger sister called Ellie (Jenny Ortega), who Joe is also very protective over.

When Delilah reveals she may have been sexually assaulted by Henderson (Chris D’Elia), a comedian and celebrity, Joe takes matters into this own hands to protect Delilah and Ellie.

However, things did not go to plan and Joe ended up being trapped in LA, with Forty Quinn (James Scully) where he was spiked with drugs.

On an acid trip, Joe started to hallucinate that he killed somebody but did not know who, so the next day when he arrived at the storage unit and discovered Delilah’s lifeless body, he was convinced he had been the one to do the murderous deed.

In a shocking twist, Joe’s on and off girlfriend Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti) revealed that she was the killer.

Love had broken into Joe’s storage unit overnight and killed Delilah to protect Joe and their unborn baby, believing Delilah would turn Joe in to the police once she was free.

As a result, Deliah’s 15-year-old sister Ellie was left orphaned with Child Protection Services close behind her.

Seeing his younger self in Ellie, Joe gave her money to move to Florida so she could avoid being taken into care.

He promised to send her money every month and set her up with a fake identity when she got there.

Before she left, Joe confessed he had been the one to kill Henderson to which Ellie replied: “Burn in hell.”

At the end of the episode, it was revealed that Joe had stuck to his word and had continued to support Ellie’s new life.

For now, Delilah’s death remains unsolved by the LAPD.

Riverdale season 4 cast: Who plays Mr Sowerberry? Who is Lane Edwards? https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-4-cast-who-plays-mr-sowerberry-who-is-lane-edwards/ https://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-4-cast-who-plays-mr-sowerberry-who-is-lane-edwards/#respond Mon, 21 Oct 2019 00:33:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/riverdale-season-4-cast-who-plays-mr-sowerberry-who-is-lane-edwards/

Riverdale’s Mob boss and Veronica (Camila Mendes)’s dad Hiram Lodge (played by Mark Consuelos) is always up to no good. Whether he’s getting a prison to produce his drugs for the town’s teens or chasing down his daughter’s beloved sweetheart Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), when there’s something dodgy going on in Riverdale, most people would bet money on him being involved. So to keep his empire growing and to ensure he stays out of prison, Hiram needs a good attorney – who comes in the shape of Mr Sowerberry.

Who is Mr Sowerberry in Riverdale?

Paul Sowerberry is played by Lane Edwards in Riverdale season 4.

Lane has previously appeared in Smallville, Falling Skies, Supernatural, Heartbeat, The Good Doctor and Redemption.

Mr Sowerberry is the attorney of Hiram Lodge, who ironically ended up incarcerated in his own prison in season 3.

Veronica, with the help of boyfriend Archie, came up with a plan to take down her dad and managed to get him arrested by Sheriff FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich).

Despite being thrown in the Lodge Detention Centre for his misdeeds, Hiram was already scheming and planning his revenge against his enemies.

Hiram is going to be taking aim at his family including his now estranged wife Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols) after she went against his plans to privatise Riverdale and essentially run the town himself.

Season three was definitely a turning point in the marriage between Hiram and Hermione, with the latter only sticking with the mafia kingpin out of fear.

Both of them were also having affairs – Hermoine was seeing Minetta while Hiram was keeping his mistress Ms Mulwray (Kelly Ripa) at the Five Seasons.

Consuelos and Ripa are actually married in real life, helping to make their on-screen romance even more realistic.

At the end of season three, Hiram was told by one of the guards of Hermoine’s arrest after evidence had been planted to take her down.

He also hinted he would be seeking revenge on his daughter since she helped to put him in prison.

Even though Hiram is imprisoned, he can pull strings from behind the scenes so could he have something to do with the mystery surrounding Jughead following the season four trailer?

Hiram is expected to cause trouble throughout series from behind bars so his trusted attorney is bound to be at hand to help him out.

Riverdale season 4 continues on Netflix UK every Thursday.

SNL Video: Matthew Broderick Plays Mike Pompeo in Impeachment Sketch, Ferris Bueller References Abound https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-matthew-broderick-plays-mike-pompeo-in-impeachment-sketch-ferris-bueller-references-abound/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-matthew-broderick-plays-mike-pompeo-in-impeachment-sketch-ferris-bueller-references-abound/#respond Sun, 06 Oct 2019 08:28:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/snl-video-matthew-broderick-plays-mike-pompeo-in-impeachment-sketch-ferris-bueller-references-abound/

Saturday was not a day off for Matthew Broderick, who popped up during this week’s SNL cold open to portray Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He arrived amidst a conversation at the White House between Mike Pence (played by Beck Bennett) and Rudy Giuliani (Kate McKinnon), both of whom were extremely flustered over this “impeachment farce.” Giuliani was frustrated that it was interfering with his “busy season” (aka Halloween), while Pence was simply annoyed that it was interrupting his plans to see Judy with “Mother.”

As for M.I.A. President Trump, typically played by Alec Baldwin, he was busy meeting with an alligator breeder to discuss populating his beloved wall.

OK, now for what we all came here to talk about: When asked about failing to meet a subpoena deadline to present the House with Ukraine-related documents, he simply replied that he bought himself a little time. Cut to a Pompeo-less hearing, where Alex Moffat was taking attendance Ferris Bueller-style: “Pompeo? … Pompeo? … Pompeo?”

Popular on TVLine

And that wasn’t the only reference to Broderick’s iconic character. On his way out of the White House — presumably fleeing to Finland — Pompeo announced, “Impeachment moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

This marks Broderick’s third appearance on Saturday Night Live. He made his hosting debut in 1988, then returned for a second time in 1998.

Emmerdale cast: Who plays DI Goldberg? Who is John Bowler? https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-cast-who-plays-di-goldberg-who-is-john-bowler/ https://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-cast-who-plays-di-goldberg-who-is-john-bowler/#respond Mon, 05 Aug 2019 16:03:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/emmerdale-cast-who-plays-di-goldberg-who-is-john-bowler/

The factory fire on Emmerdale last week sent shockwaves through the village as Frank Clayton (played by Michael Praed) tragically died as a result. Inadvertently caused by Amy Wyatt (Natalie Ann Jamieson) and Kerry Wyatt (Laura Norton), factory workers and residents alike were left stunned to see Frank flung from the building following an explosion which sadly took his life. As his daughters mourn his loss, it has been left up to DI Goldberg (John Bowler) to investigate what happened and ITV soap fans are keen to know more about the Emmerdale actor.

Who plays DI Goldberg on Emmerdale?

Emmerdale’s DI Goldberg is played by 67-year-old actor John Bowler.

Bowler’s introduction on Emmerdale came on Friday, August 2 to investigate the factory fire which claimed Frank’s life.

So far, Di Goldberg has had run-ins with Tracy Metcalfe (Amy Walsh) and the Sharma family, but fans have been distracted by where they recognise the actor from away from the ITV soap.

WHY DID FRANK CLAYTON ACTOR LEAVE EMMERDALE?

The actor’s CV boasts a number of high-profile roles prior to his Emmerdale debut this year.

Most notably, Bowler portrayed PC Roger Valentine on long-running ITV crime drama The Bill until 2010.

Bowler’s time on The Bill saw him rack up over 200 acting credits over the course of six years on the drama.

The actor has also landed roles on pretty much every other UK soap going before stepping into the Dales.

Die-hard soap fans may recognise Bowler for his portrayal of Dougie Slade on BBC’s EastEnders back in 2003.

IS KERRY WYATT REALLY AMY’S MUM ON EMMERDALE?

The year before his stint on Albert Square, the Emmerdale star appeared in a handful of episodes of Coronation Street as well, playing John Wilding.

Soapland came calling again in 2017 when Bowler starred in daytime drama Doctors.

While the small screen is where Bowler has spent the majority of his career, the Emmerdale newcomer has also enjoyed stints in a number of British movies.

He starred opposite Golden Globe-nominee Anna Friel in 1998 drama The Tribe.

Bowler also landed a part in 2013 thriller Harrigan alongside Wild at Heart star Stephen Tompkinson.

Other roles ITV soap fans may recognise the DI Goldberg actor from include DCI Banks, Holby City, WPC 56, Casualty and Steel River Blues.

IS DEBBIE DINGLE LEAVING EMMERDALE IN 2019?

How long Bowler will remain on Emmerdale depends on how long the investigation into the factory fire goes on for.

The likes of Rishi Sharma (Bhasker Patel), Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker) and Frank himself have emerged as early suspects behind the fire.

However, viewers know it was all down to Amy and mum Kerry.

Kerry finds herself face-to-face with DI Goldberg on Tuesday (August 6) as he tries to get to the bottom of the investigation.

Whether she’ll be able to successfully evade arrest along with Amy for the robbery and subsequent murder of Frank will be revealed in the coming weeks on Emmerdale.

Emmerdale continues at 7pm every weeknight on ITV.

Orange Is the New Black’s cast in season seven saw the actors behind Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Schilling) and Nicky Nichols (Natasha Lyonne) return for the final ever series on Netflix. While several regulars made their comebacks, a handful of new faces also appeared, including Shani (Marie Lou-Nahhas) and Zelda (Alicia Witt). Zelda made quite the impact on Piper in season seven and OITNB fans are keen to learn more about the actor who plays her.

Who is Zelda in OITNB season 7?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Orange Is the New Black season 7.

Zelda’s first introduced to Orange Is the New Black in the eighth episode of season seven.

OITNB viewers see her strike up an instant connection with Piper while on a retreat.

Piper thinks Zelda is part of a ploy by her sister-in-law to get her to split from wife Alex (Laura Prepon) but its turns out that isn’t the case.

WHO IS KAREN REUTER? WHY IS OITNB SEASON 7 DEDICATED TO HER?

However, Zelda and Piper’s natural spark is unavoidable and the pair’s relationship begins to blossom.

Piper manages to avoid succumbing to Zelda’s charms until CO McCullough (Emily Tarver) pays her a visit.

McCullough tells Piper about her and Alex’s sexual antics in the prison, prompting a furious reaction from Piper.

Piper’s left under the impression Alex has left her for the prison guard and makes her way to Zelda’s apartment.

Zelda and Piper spend a night of passion together and, after Piper and Alex’s official split in the series finale, it appears they’re meant to be together.

However, in the very final scene of OITNB, Piper chooses Alex over Zelda, visiting her in prison in Ohio in one of the most heartwarming scenes of the series.

OITNB SEASON 7 ENDING EXPLAINED

Who plays Zelda in OITNB season 7?

Zelda is portrayed in Orange Is the New Black by 43-year-old actress Alicia Witt.

Witt appears in six episodes of series seven – episodes eight through 13.

Orange Is the New Black may be the actor’s most recent role but she’s appeared in a number of hit TV series and movies.

Prior to OITNB, Witt’s most notable role came in CBS sitcom Cybill in the ‘90s.

Witt racked up over 80 acting credits in Cybill while also landing parts in Hollywood flicks Citizen Ruth and Bongwater.

WHICH LOVE ISLAND STARS FEATURE IN OITNB SEASON 7?

In the ‘00s, Witt enjoyed roles in Al Pacino blockbuster 88 Minutes and the Hugh Grant-led Two Weeks Notice.

On the small screen, the OITNB star landed parts in NBC drama Friday Night Lights and Law & Order: Criminal Intent.

Witt’s also enjoyed success in recent years, securing recurring roles in ABC’s Nashville and even appeared in AMC horror The Walking Dead.

OITNB viewers may also recognise Witt for her roles in 2018 flicks Spare Room and Mississippi Requiem.
