Astute listeners know that you can’t gauge a song’s mood solely through the instrumentation or the lyrics, but that’s often what AI has been asked to do — and that’s not much help if you’re trying to sift through millions of songs to find something melancholic or upbeat Thankfully, Deezer’s researchers have found a way to make that AI consider the totality of a song before passing judgment. They’ve developed a deep learning system that gauges the emotion and intensity of a track by relying on a wide variety of data, not just a single factor like the lyrics.

Deezer trained the AI using raw audio signals, linguistic context reconstruction models and a Million Song Dataset that aggregates Last.fm tags describing tunes (such as “calm” or “sad”). The researchers mapped the MSD to Deezer’s library using song metadata, extracting individual words from the lyrics in the process. The result was an 18,644-song database the team could use to both train AI on song moods and to test its theories.

The system is merely average at detecting the mood of a song based on lyrics. However, the association between audio and lyrics helped it gauge the energy of a given piece more effectively than past techniques. This could help identify the difference between a soothing downtempo piece and an upbeat dance track, as an example.

This isn’t ready for use in services like Deezer. The research group wants to look at different training models (such as an unsupervised system that looks at huge volumes of unlabeled info) to improve the accuracy. You can see where this might go, mind you. Deezer could automatically generate playlists that cater to a wide variety of moods without having to tag every song by hand. You could listen to songs that are just upbeat enough to improve your spirits, or slow enough to set you at ease without putting you to sleep.

Spotify and Pandora publicly banned R. Kelly’s music from their own playlists while he faces allegations of sexual misconduct and assault, but Apple Music had already quietly done the same, according to Rolling Stone. While you can still find the artist’s tunes on all three services, the trio has prohibited his songs from company-curated collections, including the popular RapCaviar.

Apple had made the decision weeks ago, the company told Rolling Stone, while Pandora has been refining how it deals with artists accused or guilty of ‘unacceptable conduct.’ Spotify pulled R. Kelly’s music for violating its new policy regarding ‘hate content and hateful conduct.’ In essence, all three frame their decisions as removing their tacit endorsement of musicians without, well, removing their content entirely.

To be clear, Spotify has done the latter, yanking white supremacist music off its platform entirely after Charlottesville. But removing content from official playlists is a sort of stopgap reprimand to distance it from the brand. Their approach seems to compromise between permitting speech without fully endorsing it, which Apple Music and Pandora are de facto following.

In addition to R. Kelly, Spotify pulled the music of XXXTentacion, a rapper charged with multiple domestic abuse felonies, from its curated song collections. At the moment, he remains on Apple Music’s playlists, and it’s unclear which other artists may run afoul of any of this — or other — service’s policies.

Amazon announced today that Amazon Music listeners will now be able to ask Alexa to make a playlist through their Alexa-enabled devices. Commands like “Alexa, add this to my playlist” and “Alexa, create a new playlist” can be used and users can ask the assistant to add songs to a specific playlist or to create a new playlist from the current song being listened to.

Last month, Amazon added support for SMS messaging through Alexa-enabled devices as well as voice control to its Alexa app for Android. It introduced Alexa support to its Amazon Music app for iOS and Android last September and the company says that playlist creation has been one of its most-requested voice features.

Prime Music listeners and Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers can use the few feature as can those with the Amazon Music Unlimited Echo Plan, which makes the premium streaming service available on a single Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Show or Amazon Tap.

Call of Duty WW2 fans will get Ranked Playlists and a brand new Daily Mode feature, Sledgehammer Games co-founder Michael Condrey has confirmed.

No further information on things like divisions, emblems or integration with  Activision’s Call of Duty World League is not known at this point.

Condrey teased the inclusion of Ranked Playlists and the mysterious Daily Mode on Twitter.

It came after prominent YouTuber Nadeshot tweeted that he was “day dreaming about a potential ranked playlist in COD:WW2.

Cowdrey sent a cheeky reply, that said: “Zzzzz…. #wip”.

But included with the tweet was a screenshot of a Call of Duty WW2 menu screen.

It showed a number of different play options available, which are as follows:

• Public match

• Ranked match

• Custom match

• Daily mode

• Last played

• Nazi zombies

The public match option was highlighted and it gave a description of what that mode entails.

It said: “Join an unranked public battle. Choose to fight in a variety of modes and maps.”

But most importantly, the image confirms the inclusion of a Ranked Match playlist in Call of Duty WW2.

It’s a feature many CoD and eSports fans have been wanting since Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s League Play. 

It’s unclear what the Daily Mode will entail.

PvP have speculated that Sledgehammer may use it as a special section for Call of Duty WW2 game modes that get updated daily.

While CharlieIntel have suggested it could just be used for internal testing.

Condrey had previously confirmed the inclusion of ranked matches to Call of Duty WW2.

Speaking on Reddit, he said: “As you may have heard, we had a great week with some of the top competitors at SHG playing the game and giving us feedback.

“Ranked Play and Game Battles are important components of our feature set. We’ll have a lot more news about the competitive scene coming later this summer.”

In other Call of Duty WW2 news, Express.co.uk previously revealed the pre-order bonuses fans will get.

For fans who pre-order the upcoming Second World War shooter, they’ll get 500 COD points to use in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3.

The Call of Duty WW2 pre-order bonuses are only available to people who pre-order the game digitally.

Players can use these COD points to buy Supply Drops, which each give three random items.

These random items could be something small like Calling Cards, or something as powerful as weapons.

It can be fun to create shared playlists on streaming music services — it’s a window into your friends’ tastes. You don’t necessarily want to wade through an app to add tracks, though, and they usually shut out pals who can’t use the service. That’s where Spotify thinks it can save the day. It’s launching a Group Playlists chat extension in Facebook Messenger that lets anyone in a chat add songs to the queue, even if they’re not using Spotify. Once someone has started one of these collective playlists, you just have to tap a button to start adding tracks.

The addition is bound to be helpful for parties — your friends can add to the mix using an app they already have. It’s also good for discovering new songs in your social circle. It’s no secret as to why Spotify wants this: it could not only encourage you to stream more often, but expose Spotify to friends who might be new to the service. And when there are nearly 2 billion Facebook users, that’s a lot of potential listeners.
