The NHL and NHL Players' Association have given up on the possibility of staging the next World Cup of Hockey in September 2020 but will continue collective bargaining talks.

In separate statements released Wednesday, the league and NHLPA announced that there's not enough time to put together a World Cup in roughly 20 months. The sides met earlier in the day in Toronto to discuss the World Cup as part of collective bargaining talks after holding an informal meeting in Las Vegas on Jan. 10 that lasted more than two hours.

Not holding the World Cup in September 2020 is consequential because it was so closely linked to the potential of labour peace in hockey. But the NHL and NHLPA plan to meet again soon with the goal of avoiding a potential work stoppage. A lockout wiped out the 2004-05 season; another lasted more than three months in 2012-13.

The current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) runs until 2022, but either owners or players could choose this September to opt out and end it Sept. 15, 2020. Players' escrow payments and Olympic participation are significant issues that must be overcome to avoid either side re-opening the CBA.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, right, and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, pictured at the 2015 announcement of the 2016 World Cup tournament, agreed Wednesday that there would be no 2020 edition. (Gene J. Puskar/Associated Press)

The league's deputy commissioner, Bill Daly, told The Associated Press last week he believed there was a commitment by both sides to continue talking and "see if we can move forward on something that might work for a CBA extension."

"While the parties have now joined the concluded that it is no longer realistic to try to schedule a World Cup of Hockey for the fall of 2020, they plan to continue their dialogue with the hope of being able to schedule the next World Cup event as part of a broader agreement, which would include a long-term international event calendar," the NHL said in a statement.

Brad Marchand's shorthanded goal with 44 seconds remaining was the game winner 0:36

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey generated revenue that was split evenly among owners and players, and the goal is to keep that event going with another edition at a time later than September 2020.

"The players are focused on finding the proper time to schedule the World Cup of Hockey within the context of an overall international hockey calendar," the NHLPA said in a statement. "We look forward to continuing our discussions with the league."

'We had failed Dan and the other players': OHL commissioner calls abuse allegations 'sickening' https://briefnews.eu/we-had-failed-dan-and-the-other-players-ohl-commissioner-calls-abuse-allegations-sickening/ https://briefnews.eu/we-had-failed-dan-and-the-other-players-ohl-commissioner-calls-abuse-allegations-sickening/#respond Fri, 30 Nov 2018 16:32:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-had-failed-dan-and-the-other-players-ohl-commissioner-calls-abuse-allegations-sickening/

The president of the Canadian Hockey League admits his organization failed the players under its care.

David Branch says he didn't know how bad things were for Daniel Carcillo and other players who went public this week with allegations of brutal hazing.

In an interview with CBC Sports, Branch called their allegations "sickening."

"We had failed Dan and the other players involved in my view, and it's shocking. You know, I don't know how else to put it," said Branch, who is also the commissioner of the Ontario Hockey League.

Over the last few days, four members of the 2002-03 Sarnia Sting have come forward to tell their stories of what they went through.

"I moved away from home at 17 to chase my dream of making it to the NHL and making something of myself. And what myself and 11 of us had to endure that year was daily abuse," said Carcillo, who went on to win two Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks.

Watch Branch discuss his reaction to the abuse accusations:

CHL commissioner David Branch spoke to the National about the league's shortcomings in dealing with abuse. 2:57

Carcillo detailed being stuffed into a bus bathroom naked and having teammates spit tobacco juice on him. He also told of players being stripped naked, tied down and beaten with a sawed-off goalie stick.

Carcillo contacted Branch directly

Some of his teammates, including goaltender Ryan Munce, quickly came forward to corroborate Carcillo's allegations and tell their own stories.

"There's guys that were acting like KKK [Ku Klux Klan] because I was dating a girl of a different nationality, doing Hitler signs in front of our Jewish teammate until he went to tears," Munce recalled.

"This is constant abuse day in, day out, strapping a guy to the table and beating him with belts and things, that was the 'rookie of the day.'"

Branch says Carcillo contacted him directly during that season about what was going on in Sarnia. He visited the team to investigate, but was told by management and the coaching staff that no serious incidents had occurred.

Watch Daniel Carcillo detail the abuse he endured at 17:

The two-time Stanley Cup champion discusses the hazing incident he remembers most vividly, when he says one of his OHL coaches took part in whipping a teammate with a belt. 0:51

"There was one situation that they described, which while it was dangerous in my view it wasn't something that called for any particular discipline," Branch recalls.

"That situation was rookie players being put in the laundry cart of the team and pushed down the hall and you know kind of recklessly bouncing off the walls and things of that nature. And that was really the extent of what came at me and the discussion as I recall."

Jeff Perry, Sarnia's head coach in 2002-03, initially disputed Carcillo's claims that management was aware of the abuse. However, Carcillo tweeted on Thursday that Perry was among members of management who have taken accountability.

A call to Perry by CBC Sports on Wednesday seeking further comment was not returned.

Branch says a major change for the league around hazing came in 2005. That year, the league issued a major set of fines and suspensions to the Windsor Spitfires over a series of hazing incidents.

"That was the first time and, quite frankly, the only time it's come to me about issues around initiation, hazing and the like," Branch says.

Nonetheless, he says the league has instituted a series of initiatives including a zero-tolerance hazing policy.

'We had to support the players'

"We had to support the players, make sure they understood what's right, what's acceptable, what's not. And more importantly, I would suggest, here's how you can reach out if you're not comfortable with going to your own coach or general manager," Branch says.

Branch also points to a number of mental health programs the league has put in place.

"People look at our league that it's the No. 1 development league in the world for the National Hockey League, which it is. But our focus the last 10 to 15 years is how do we support the person? And that's where we've made such tremendous progress, which we're so proud of."

Watch as Carcillo's former teammate echoes experiences of abuse:

In an exclusive interview to CBC News, former Sarnia Sting goaltender Ryan Munce details the abuse he suffered while playing junior hockey. 3:11

Others in the hockey community seem to echo Branch's sentiments that hazing is a by-product of an old hockey culture that no longer exists.

"I think there needs to be an understanding that things have changed greatly," says Eric Wellwood, the coach of the OHL's Flint Firebirds.

"Through my experience in the OHL, from the time I was a 16-year-old back in 2006 until being now a head coach in the league, they've eliminated all these bad, bad things that surround the league — in particular, hazing. And in the end, I think that the OHL deserve credit and not to be smeared with a story that may be true but that happened a long time ago."

On Thursday night, the OHL released a statement reiterating its commitment to the anti-hazing policy.

"In light of the recent attention that has been paid to the issue of hazing, the league has spoken with team management, and all of our member teams are providing a refresher to all staff and players about this most important topic," read the statement.

"Our hope is that through conversation, education and awareness, the attitudes that lead to hazing behaviour and these unthinkable actions disappear from sport and society."

Hope that change has happened

A number of current NHL players have also reacted to Carcillo's comments, including Vancouver Canucks forward Bo Horvat.

"It's tough to hear that kind of stuff, but I think that kind of faded out in my era of junior hockey," Horvat says.

"I've heard a lot about it and heard what guys have gone through in past years, but I think we really cracked down on it when I started coming in junior, so I didn't get any of that kind of stuff. Thank God."

Carcillo and the others who have come forward hope Branch and Horvat are right. Carcillo also says he appreciates the members of the Sarnia Sting who have reached out to talk about what happened.

At the same time, change in hockey doesn't happen overnight.

"When you're singularly focused on a goal, it's kind of scary what you'll accept to try and achieve that goal," says Carcillo.

"And if you talk and if you talk too much in the hockey world and you ask too many questions, they don't like that. They'd like you to be a good little soldier and to do what they say."

French rights group files case against PSG over claims scouts 'limited number of black players' https://briefnews.eu/french-rights-group-files-case-against-psg-over-claims-scouts-limited-number-of-black-players/ https://briefnews.eu/french-rights-group-files-case-against-psg-over-claims-scouts-limited-number-of-black-players/#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2018 15:59:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/french-rights-group-files-case-against-psg-over-claims-scouts-limited-number-of-black-players/ French football club Paris Saint-Germain are facing a discrimination lawsuit over reports that scouts at the club carried out racial profiling and tried to limit the number of black players at the team’s academy.

Investigative outlet Mediapart reported on Thursday that PSG scouts had subjected young players to racial profiling – which is illegal in France – from 2013 until as late as the spring of 2018.

Scouts were reportedly asked to note a player’s ethnic background, while one senior youth recruitment figure allegedly said “there are too many West Indians and Africans in Paris.”

PSG confirmed that the profiling had existed, but said that management figures had not been aware of it. The club also said they were probing the issue internally.

“Paris Saint-Germain reaffirms its firm condemnation of all forms of discrimination, racism or ethnic monitoring,” read a statement from PSG, released shortly after the reports emerged.

“Forms with illegal content were used between 2013 and 2018 by the training centre’s department responsible for player scouting outside the Île-de-France region. These forms were introduced at the sole personal initiative of the head of this department.

“On being made aware of this at the start of October 2018, Paris Saint-Germain launched an internal investigation to understand how such practices could have existed and to decide on the necessary measures to be taken.

“As the emergence of the club’s young talents proves, scouting at Paris Saint-Germain is decided solely on a skills and behavioural basis, both on the pitch and within the group.”

However, the club now face growing external pressure, including from the French league of human rights and the French Football Federation (FFF).

The human rights group confirmed that it had filed a discrimination lawsuit against PSG with a state prosecutor, saying: “Such a system, which would have been in place since 2013 by the club’s leaders and would have lasted until 2018, is deeply racist and discriminatory, with an unhealthy confusion between physical fitness and origin.

“Beyond the flagrant violation of the values of sports, equality and respect, and the club’s commitment to fight racism and discrimination, these practices, if confirmed, fall under the law,” it added, according to AP.

Meanwhile, the French Football Federation has said its ethics council will look at the matter, and could potentially ask the French league’s disciplinary committee to take action.

“The FFF, with the LFP, believes football carries and defends the values of diversity and universality, and fights against all forms of discrimination,” it said in announcing the step.

Mediapart states that scouts were asked to indicate a player’s ethnicity as being French, North African, West Indian or African.

According to one scout, the club preferred to avoid signing African players “because you are never sure of their date of birth.”

Former chief scout Marc Westerlopp reportedly complained about “a problem with the direction the club” and that “there are too many West Indians and Africans in Paris.”

Mediapart highlighted the case of talented youngster Yann Gboho, who was reportedly overlooked by the club when aged 13. Ivory Coast-born Gboho, now 17, is currently on the books at Rennes and has played for the French under-18 team.

French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu has expressed her “dismay” at the revelations, while PSG deputy CEO Jean-Claude Blanc has said he feels “shocked” and “betrayed” by the news.

The people allegedly involved have since left the club, a PSG spokesman said.

Calgary’s Kevin Koe maintained his perfect record en route to capturing the Players’ Championship on Sunday while Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg failed to defend her title on the women’s side.

Koe beat Sweden’s Niklas Edin 6-2 for the men’s title in the afternoon before Jones fell 7-2 to American Jamie Sinclair in the evening.

It is the fifth curling Grand Slam title of Koe’s career. Edin won the world championship in Las Vegas one week ago.

The Koe rink finished the tournament with an untarnished 8-0 record.

Kevin Koe’s Calgary rink beat Niklas Edin and his world championship rink from Sweden 6-2 to win the Grand Slam of Curling Player’s Championship0:44

Koe opened the scoring with the hammer, converting on a double takeout to score two points in the second end.

The reigning world champion cut the lead in half by drawing one in the third end.

After back-and-forth singles in the fourth and fifth, Koe’s rink stretched the lead by taking out Edin’s counter and scoring a deuce.

Edin looked to score in the seventh end, but jammed and conceded a single.

Jones, who was the lone women’s skip without a loss at the tournament, fell in a hole against Sinclair and couldn’t recover.

Sinclair’s rink defeated Jennifer Jones 7-2 on Sunday in Toronto.1:05

Sinclair got on the board in the second end after Jones jammed on a double-takeout attempt and gave up a point.

Jones conceded another two points after missing back-to-back raises and failing to wipe Sinclair’s stones in the third.

Sinclair added another point in the fourth end to extend the lead to 4-0. Jones scored in the fifth end and added another point in the sixth, but never got any closer.

Sinclair’s rink became the first American team to capture a Grand Slam title.

The Players’ Championship is the penultimate event of the Grand Slam curling season.

Players' Championship highlights curling greatness https://briefnews.eu/players-championship-highlights-curling-greatness/ https://briefnews.eu/players-championship-highlights-curling-greatness/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 20:11:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/players-championship-highlights-curling-greatness/

TORONTO — Yes, the curling season is still going.

In fact, Olympic champion, world champion and Canadian champion curlers have all congregated in downtown Toronto this week for the 26th Players’ Championship. It’s the second-last stop on this year’s Grand Slam of Curling.

There’s a lot of money on the line too — the $ 300,000 purse makes it the biggest of the season. The top-12 men’s and women’s teams according to the World Curling Tour rankings are playing at the prestigious event.

CBC Sports is broadcasting the women’s quarter-finals on Saturday (3:30 p.m. ET) and the men’s final Sunday (12:30 p.m. ET).

Jennifer Jones and her Manitoba team seem unstoppable at this point. Friday afternoon the team secured their 25th consecutive win dating back to the Scotties after defeating Korea’s Team Kim.

“Oh I didn’t even think about that many wins,” Jones said, surprised. “We’ve been playing really well. It’s probably been the best year we’ve ever had. We’re just having fun.”

In March, Jones captured the world title in North Bay, Ont. by defeating Anna Hasselborg of Sweden. They went undefeated during that championship. The only blemish on the season was a semifinal loss in the Olympic trials.

“Right after we lost the semi we sat in the change room and said let’s go win the worlds,” Jones said. “That was pretty much our meeting. One line.”

They haven’t looked back and are poised for a playoff push this weekend. They’ve also locked up the $ 75,000 payout for winning the Bonus Cup on the tour.

Olympic losses still sting

Kevin Koe and his rink are trying to forget about what happened during the Olympics in February. The team lost the bronze medal game to Switzerland in Pyeongchang.

“What can you say?” Koe said. “Part of us will probably never get over that performance. But you learn to live with it and move on. We’ve lost a lot of tough games before but obviously those were the worst.”

Koe and company currently lead the Pool B men’s standings, winning their first four games of the Players’ Championship.

“You can’t throw a pity party for yourself and we want to finish strong,” Koe said. “We really want to end off with a win in one of these last two events.”

This is the second-last event for this current iteration of the Koe team. Marc Kennedy is stepping away from the game, Brent Laing has joined John Epping.

“It’s bittersweet,” Koe said. “We’ve had a great run. Look at the last four years. Won a Brier. Lost one by a foot. Won a worlds. Won the trials.”

Rachel Homan is also on the ice with her team this week in Toronto. The team failed to make the playoffs at the Olympics. They’ve lost their first four games of the Players’ Championship.

Too much curling?

At this point of the season teams are exhausted — compounded by the fact that it was an Olympic year.

“After the Olympics, I haven’t thrown enough rocks to do this event justice,” John Shuster said. “I’m playing third this week. I haven’t liked 50 per cent of the rocks out of my hand.”

Shuster and his team have been on a month-and-a-half long curling celebration tour after winning their country’s first Olympic gold medal. They’ve spent more time in hotels and airplanes than anywhere else. A long curling season has definitely gotten longer for the U.S. team — they’re rockstars in Canada this week.

“I’ve taken a lot of photos and people want to say congratulations,” Shuster said. “This event is one of the best events on tour.”

Canadian skip Jones says while the season continues to get longer, she’s glad to see the game grow.

“We’re still amateur athletes chasing the dream of wearing the maple leaf on our back. We can’t just live off curling but it’s evolving and changing. There are more events. We get to play in front of crowds. I’m glad to part of all of this,” she said.

Gushue reflects on world championship silver

Brad Gushue and his team out St. John’s flew directly from Las Vegas to Toronto. Last Sunday night the team lost the world championship final to Sweden’s Niklas Edin, who is also competing in Toronto.

Gushue says he’s mentally exhausted at this point of the season but is reflecting on what happened in Vegas.

“I’ll look back on this experience later on in my career and be really proud of it,” he said.

“I’m just proud of the team. We all are. When we went out Sunday night after the loss it wasn’t like we had just lost a world championship. We fought hard all week.”

Gushue points to the way Brett Gallant and Mark Nichols handled themselves after losing family members just prior to the event. Gallant’s grandfather and Nichols’ mother died within three days of one another.

Now the team is competing in Toronto and sitting with a 3-1 record, looking to punch their ticket into the playoffs.

“Every year outside of the Brier this is the event everyone would want to win,” Gushue said.”The money is a big part of it.”

'Concussions affect a life': Ken Dryden wants hockey rules changed to save players' lives https://briefnews.eu/concussions-affect-a-life-ken-dryden-wants-hockey-rules-changed-to-save-players-lives/ https://briefnews.eu/concussions-affect-a-life-ken-dryden-wants-hockey-rules-changed-to-save-players-lives/#respond Mon, 16 Oct 2017 20:58:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/concussions-affect-a-life-ken-dryden-wants-hockey-rules-changed-to-save-players-lives/

Monday October 16, 2017

Hockey legend Ken Dryden is urging the National Hockey League to implement new rules that he believes will cut down on the number of concussions sustained by players during games.

Dryden, who won six Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens during the 1970s, wants the NHL to penalize any play that involves a player making contact with the head of another — no exceptions.

“Concussions affect a life. They don’t just affect the ability to play a sport,” Dryden tells The Current’s Anna Maria Tremonti.

‘One of the saddest parts of the whole thing is that Steve died thinking it was all his fault.’– Ken Dryden

In his new book, Game Change: The Life and Death of Steve Montador and the Future of Hockey, the Hockey Hall of Famer and long-time concussion advocate, explores chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) through the tragic fate of one hockey player Montador.

montador-steve

The former defenceman who played for the Calgary Flames and the Boston Bruins, died in 2015 at 35-years-old. He arranged to have his brain sent for examination to see if he had CTE, a brain disease linked to repeated concussions, which can only be observed through an autopsy of the brain. A neuropathologist confirmed he did suffer from the disease.

Montador’s family is now suing the NHL, alleging the league had failed to keep him safe and furthermore, failed to warn him of the long-term effects of brain trauma.

“One of the saddest parts of the whole thing is that Steve died thinking it was all his fault,” Dryden says.

“Steve was experiencing a lot of the symptoms that people with head injuries have. Memory problems, anxiety, depression, difficulty on focusing, difficulty in terms of making decisions, and putting the pieces together and sorting things out,” he explains.

“And so in the end, it was really a lousy life.”

‘It’s about the injury. It’s about the brain. It’s about the player being hit. It’s about the effect of it — not the cause.’– Ken Dryden

The NHL has been under scrutiny in recent years after several NHL players were found to have had concussions at the time of their deaths. It’s why Dryden feels compelled to call for a change in professional hockey with no hits to the head in game play. Period.

“Whether they are intentional or accidental, whether they are incidental or significant, whether they are from an elbow or a fist or something else, it doesn’t matter,” Dryden says. “The brain doesn’t distinguish.”

“It’s about the injury. It’s about the brain. It’s about the player being hit. It’s about the effect of it — not the cause.”

Ken Dryden

Hockey legend Ken Dryden says NHL commissioner Gary Bettman needs to make fundamental changes to professional hockey to save players’ lives. (Sergey Smirnov)

The game has changed

Part of the problem, Dryden says, is how much the game has changed in the last 60 years — specifically the speed and intensity.

“What happens is that you’ve got more players going after the puck. Full speed. There is less space, less time, more collisions and more forceful collisions because they are moving faster.”

According to Dryden, unlike in football, there are clear answers for how to curb the tide of head injuries in hockey. But it all starts with getting NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on board.

Dryden met up with Bettman a couple of weeks ago in New York.

‘You are the first person who is reading the final version of this book,’ Dryden said to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. (Penguin Random House)

“You are the first person who is reading the final version of this book because you are the … central actor in all of this, and you need to know what’s there,” Dryden told Bettman after handing him Game Change which Bettman promised to read.

Dryden suspects players might have a difficult time getting on board with the changes necessary to stop head injuries. But says just like how the players acquiesced and now adhere to the no stick to the face rule, Dryden believes the league will fall in line again.

The Current contacted the NHL to comment  on the issues raised by Ken Dryden. We have not heard back, but the invitation remains open.

Cleveland Police officers say they won’t hold a large American flag at the pre-game of next Sunday’s Cleveland Browns season opening game, after a group of the team’s players knelt during the national anthem before a pre-season game in August.

Steve Loomis, the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association president, said that police officers will not take part in the opening ceremony at the first season game on September 10.

“As a veteran of Operation Desert Storm and the United States Navy, and a 24-year veteran of the Cleveland Police Department, I am not going to participate or work with management that allows their players to disrespect the flag and the national anthem,” Loomis told WKYC news channel on Saturday.

On August 22 more than a dozen Browns players staged the national anthem protest ahead of the team’s pre-season game against the New York Giants.

The action, which became the largest-ever national anthem-related NFL protest, saw almost a dozen players taking part. For the first time this included two white players, one of whom, Seth DeValve, became the first white NFL player to kneel in the protests, while Britton Colquitt stood next to the kneeling players with his hand on one of their shoulders.

The protest was spurred by the unrest in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a rally called “Unite the Right” turned violent as demonstrators clashed with counter-protesters. A man, later named James Fields Jr., also drove a car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing one person and leaving many more injured.

National anthem protests were common in the NFL last season, after the then San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand during the “Star-Spangled Banner” at the end of August 2016.

Kaepernick, who opted out of his contract in March, has yet to be signed by another team.
