It’s an extra-beautiful day in Mister Robinson’s neighborhood, now that the latest ratings for Eddie Murphy’s celebrated Saturday Night Live return are in.

Hosting SNL for the first time in 35 years, Murphy’s callback-filled episode amassed 16.3 million total viewers with Live+7 DVR playback factored in — marking the long-running sketch series’ largest audience since Oct. 18, 2008, when Josh Brolin hosted with musical guest Adele and the real Sarah Palin stopped by during a season in which Tina “I Can See Russia  From My House!” Fey was lampooning the VP pick on the regular. (That outing drew 16.84 million, which at the time set a 14-year high.) 

Murphy’s audience increase of 6.3 million viewers with Live+7 playback represents the largest such gain for any broadcast-TV program since the Nov. 5, 2018 Manifest added just shy of 7 million.

In the 18-49 demo, Murphy’s SNL return swelled 1.87 ratings points — the biggest such lift on any network since the Nov. 20, 2018 This Is Us grew by just over two points — to a 34-month high of 4.37, with Live+7 DVR playback factored in.

TVLine gave veteran cast member Murphy’s return an average grade of “A+,” landing it atop readers’ ranking of Season 45’s episodes thus far.

Compared to SNL’s season-to-date L+7 averages, the Dec. 21 episode was up 112 percent and up 91 percent in total audience.

SNL returns on Saturday, Jan. 25, with host Adam Driver and musical guest Halsey.

The ability to choose playback speeds on YouTube can be pretty valuable. You can use it, say, whenever you need to see what’s going on in a tutorial in slow motion or just want to speed watch a random vlog. Now the feature has finally made its way to the platform’s iOS and Android apps, so you don’t have to fire up your laptop just so you can slow down or speed up what you’re watching.

In his announcement post, YouTube Software Engineer Pallavi Powale said they had to overcome some engineering hurdles to make the update happen. They had to make sure that the app can change the duration of the audio without affecting its quality. As you know, playing videos faster could make voices sound like chipmunks, while playing them at a slower speed could lower the pitch. The team had to do the same thing for the desktop version, but the problem with mobile is that phones are subject to hardware and network limitations. That’s why when you change the playback speed on your phone, YouTube adjusts the video quality “to be only as high as [the app] can download dependably.”

The feature is already live for a lot of people — to try it out, simply tap on the hamburger menu at the top of the app’s interface. After that, choose “Playback Speed” from the menu that pops up and choose the speed you prefer.

Ricoh is unveiling its latest 360-degree camera this morning. Dubbed the Ricoh Theta V, the $ 430 4K camera is the latest in the line which launched in 2013 with the Ricoh Theta.

Available for pre-order now, and shipping in mid-September, the Theta V features 3,820-by-1,920 resolution video capture. That’s a massive improvement on the earlier Theta S, which offered a sub-1,080p 1,920-by-960, and the Theta SC, which allowed for 1,920-by-1,080 recording.

Perhaps the biggest usability improvement to the Theta V is the inclusion of remote playback. Users can now wirelessly stream their video to an external display directly from the camera. Previous devices in the Theta line (except the developer-only Theta R) required users to export their raw footage into a computer to stitch the image and create a useable video. That’s now all done on the device. Videographers can watch their footage on any display, and move the POV by moving the camera itself.

The Theta V boosts sound quality as well. Four microphones capture data from their respective dimensions, creating spatial audio that allows users to hear where the sound is coming from within the recording. Theta V owners can also buy the optional TA-1 3D microphone to further improve audio quality. However, at the price of $ 329.99, the accessory is nearly 75% of what the camera alone costs. Ricoh marketing materials indicate that the price is tentative and may change before launch.

As a final bonus, Ricoh also announced a waterproof case for the new camera. With a provisional price of $ 230, the Underwater Housing Case TW-1 offers protection underwater down to depths of 30m.

Plex’s last few big announcements include unveiling live TV streaming for its premium subscribers and launching Plex Cloud, which lets users pipe media stored on cloud-based services (like DropBox) to any device with Plex’s app installed. But the software provider hasn’t forgotten folks who like locally storing content. The newest version of Plex’s Android app now lets you play any video file on the device (or SD card) without needing to route it through a media server or a third-party app.

As the instructions point out, all videos are fetched automatically and listed alphabetically. Most playback features are supported, but you can’t fling a video to Chromecast or another Plex app yet and external subtitles aren’t supported. (Worst of all, it won’t remember where you left off if you exit the video. Ugh.) The app can play .MP4, .MKV, .AVI, .WMV and .WMD formats — just note that the first time you play a video of that type, you’ll need internet access for the app to update player support components. After that, watch offline to your heart’s content.
