New 2018 ’68’ number plates were introduced on September 1st.

Every time new plates are introduced there is a list of numerical and letter combinations that are immediately .

DVLA guidelines dictate that any plates that ‘may cause offence’ will be removed before they end circulation.

One of the plates to be banned in the latest crop of plates was ‘EU68 BAD’ as it could potentially be seen as pro-.

A Freedom of Information request from the Press Association revealed that a total of 436 plates were banned.

Amongst these were A68 USE, BA68 TAD and OR68 ASM.

In addition to this, UK68 KKK, which is a reference to the racist group Ku Klux Klan was also omitted.

The Licensing Agency does, however, not always spot every potentially offensive plate from entering circulation.

Back in 2011, a number plates spelling JH11 HAD, an Islamic, term was spotted on the roads.

The DVLA said at the time: “We try to identify all combinations that may cause offence, and on the rare occasion where potentially offensive numbers slip through the net, steps are taken to withdraw the number.”

Certain combinations of letters or number are instantly banned including ‘SEX’ and ASS.’

A number of four and five letter combinations will also be banned including things like B** UMS, FA** RTY and CR** APS.

Personalised number plates are popular in the UK and certain plates can be incredibly valuable.

One example of this is the ‘F1’ plate, a shortening for popular motorsport Formula 1, which recently went on sale over £14 million.

The registration plate is currently owned by the founder of Kahn Design Afzal Kahn, who previously used the plate on his Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

He originally bought the plate back in 2008 for a reported £375,000.

A spokesperson for the organisation said: “Many people enjoy displaying a personalised registration number and there are over 50 million registrations available on our website.

“The vast majority of registration numbers are made available but the agency holds back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.”

Each number and character on a number plate holds a different purpose and function.

The first letter refers to the region of the country the car was registered in and the second refers to the local DVLA office.

Following that is the age identifier which signals the year it was introduced in.

Lastly, the final three characters are completely random.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

Number plates 2018

New 2018 number plates will be coming in next week (Image: GETTY)

The new 2018 number plates will be introduced on September 1st.

New plates will be marked with the ’68’ age identifier, which signifies that it was introduced in the second half of 2018.

TIP: Need new plates?

Whenever new number plates are introduced there is always a flurry of discounts from dealerships and car manufacturers who want to shift old stock ahead of the new plates hitting the forecourt.

Car buyers are also positioned to make savings of over £12,000 by buying a pre-registered car.

Ordering a new car can often see you wait weeks or months for the vehicle of your choice to be built and shipped to you.

However, by choosing a pre-registered car you can bypass that process and driveway the same day or in a much shorter period.

Pre-registered cars are vehicles that were purchased by a dealership and registered, meaning they were given a number plate which technically means they have a first owner, despite the cars travelling a handful of miles.

These vehicles are also available at a much lower price as dealerships want to shift them off their forecourts.

Dealers normally pre-register cars to hit sales targets and the practice is so common that there’s often plenty of engine, colour and specification choice, giving you a good chance to find a car that’s perfect for you.

However, you should know that buying a pre-registered car will give you ultimately less choice on the overall specs of the car but you have to weigh up that trade-off for a heavily discounted car.

“There’s rarely been a better time to buy a new car,” said Austin Collins, managing director of BuyaCar.co.uk.

He added: “It’s the automotive equivalent of reducing the price of food that’s approaching its best before date.

“On 1 September, some of these cars cannot be sold as brand new models, meaning that consumers have the upper hand.

“You’ll miss out on the new “68” number plate that will be fitted to all new cars from 1 September, but savings of £5,000 or more should make up for that.”

Regulators want drones to have visible ‘license plates’ https://briefnews.eu/regulators-want-drones-to-have-visible-license-plates/ https://briefnews.eu/regulators-want-drones-to-have-visible-license-plates/#respond Thu, 24 May 2018 05:50:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/regulators-want-drones-to-have-visible-license-plates/

When you register a drone with the FAA, you’ll get a government-issued ID number you can put as a note inside the battery compartment or any other internal part of the machine. In the future, though, you may have to make sure that number is perfectly visible — sort of a like small license plate for your UAV. Bloomberg has discovered a proposed rule filed earlier this month that would “require small unmanned aircraft owners to display the unique identifier assigned by the FAA upon completion of the registration process on an external surface of the aircraft.” If it becomes an official rule, you’d no longer be allowed to keep that number hidden.

As Bloomberg noted, visible registration numbers would allow regulators to keep a closer eye on personal drones. Authorities have long been trying to gain greater control over the flying machines, since they were involved in aircraft crashes in the past and due to growing concerns over terrorist use of UAVs. Late last year, the government required people who own drones 0.5 to 55 pounds to register their devices with the FAA — the UN even plans to support a single worldwide drone registry. And just a couple of months ago, the White House brought up the possibility of allowing law enforcement personnel to to track and shoot down civilian drones.

Unfortunately, the proposed rule was very short and didn’t include details on logistics and other info. Acting Administrator Dan Elwell simply said at an event on May 16th:

“We need assurances that any drone, any unmanned aircraft, operating in controlled airspace is identifiable and trackable. It’s as simple as that.”

Brazilian bishop ‘stole $600,000 from church collection plates’ https://briefnews.eu/brazilian-bishop-stole-600000-from-church-collection-plates/ https://briefnews.eu/brazilian-bishop-stole-600000-from-church-collection-plates/#respond Sat, 24 Mar 2018 19:39:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brazilian-bishop-stole-600000-from-church-collection-plates/

A bishop and several priests in Brazil have been charged in connection with the theft of more than $ 600,000 belonging to parishioners.

Police arrested Bishop of Formosa José Ronaldo Ribeiro as well as a number of other clergymen Monday after police found large quantities of cash during a raid on Ribeiro’s home. They group are accused of pilfering funds, amounting to 2 million reais ($ 608,000), from various sources.

Ribeiro and four other priests allegedly stole money from collection plates, donations and fees paid for weddings and baptisms. The supposedly ill-gotten gains were then used by the group to buy a cattle ranch and a lottery ticket shop, according to Brazilian media Globo TV.

Ribeiro scored something of an own goal when parishioners became suspicious and reported him to authorities, who then opened an investigation in 2015. Prosecutors charged a total of 11 people with misappropriation of funds, money laundering, ideological falsehood and criminal association on Friday.

  • Beijing police began testing facial-recognition glasses last week.
  • They appear to be similar to those first used by police in a Henan railway station last month.
  • China is drastically increasing its facial recognition technology, and hopes to eventually be able to identify any citizen within three seconds.
  • The highly-policed region of Xinjiang serves as a warning to the rest of the country about potential surveillance measures to come.

Police on the outskirts of Beijing are using facial-recognition glasses that can identify passengers and car number plates within milliseconds.

The smart glasses were first tested in Beijing at a highway checkpoint last week, according to Reuters.

DVLA number plates 2018 – THESE plates have been banned and this is why https://briefnews.eu/dvla-number-plates-2018-these-plates-have-been-banned-and-this-is-why/ https://briefnews.eu/dvla-number-plates-2018-these-plates-have-been-banned-and-this-is-why/#respond Sat, 10 Mar 2018 10:07:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dvla-number-plates-2018-these-plates-have-been-banned-and-this-is-why/

The have been released.

New ’18’ plates went active on March 1st 2018.

Thur plated mark the age of cars manufactured between March 1st and August 31st 2018.

Ahead of the launch the DVLA blacklisted hundreds of plates that were deemed to be offensive or contain inappropriate language.

Things that could be misconstrued as swearwords, racial slurs, sex acts or be generally offensive terms were suppressed.

Every year a list of phrases are immediately banned including the words ‘SEX’ and ’ASS’.

Four and five letter combinations will also be banned including things like B** UMS, FA** RTY and CR** APS

Specific plates omitted from circulation in 2018 include ‘BO18 CKS’ for obvious reasons while less offensive terms such as RO18 BER were also omitted.

A DVLA spokesman said: “The vast majority of registration numbers are made available but the Agency holds back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.

“Many people enjoy displaying a personalised registration number and there are over 50 million registrations available on our website, www.dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk with almost endless possibilities of combinations to suit a person’s taste, interests and budget with prices starting at just £250.”

Some plates occasionally make is into circulation such as an example form 2017 when the plate JH11 HAD was spotted in South Wales.

The plate was later removed.

In addition to offensive plates being removed, certain ones that are believed to be sought after and therefore be able to rake in a fortune at auction also get taken out.

The vast majority of number plates will not resemble a word.

Each number and letter do, however, have a specific meaning and function.

The first letter refers to the region of the country the car was registered in – e.g E for Essex – and the second letter to the local DVLA office.

Following the two letters are two numbers which from 2001 have been age identifiers.

For example in 2018 they will be ’18’ and ’68’ and before the ’68’ plate came in they were ’08’ and ’58’.

Lastly the final three characters are random letters to make the number plate unique.

Here is a list of some of the specific 2018 plates that were suppressed by the DVLA: AT18 TTY, AD18 OLF, **18 OOB, , BB18 JOB, BO18 CKS, BR18 ERY, CC18 BNP, PU18 BES and, RO18 BER.

The Morning Watch is a recurring feature that highlights a handful of noteworthy videos from around the web. They could be video essays, fanmade productions, featurettes, short films, hilarious sketches, or just anything that has to do with our favorite movies and TV shows.

In this edition, a documentary short takes a look at an incredible collection of letterpress plates used to create movie advertisements in newspapers. Plus, find out about a Jurassic Park 25th anniversary contest, and watch a trailer for a gritty adaptation of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Filmmaker Adam Roffman directed and produced this documentary short called The Collection, which follows two friends, DJ Ginsberg and Marilyn Wagner, and their discovery of an astonishing and unique collection of movie memorabilia: over 40,000 printer blocks and 20,000 printer plates used to create the original newspaper advertisements for virtually every movie released in the United States from the silent period through 1984, when newspapers stopped using the letterpress format.

Next up, in honor of the 25th anniversary of the original Jurassic Park, fans can partake in a context to create their favorite scenes from the 1993 movie in order to win some cool prizes. If you want to find out more, you can check out the official website for the contest right here.

Finally, the beloved children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar gets a gritty movie adaptation along the lines of Sin City. It’s pretty much exactly the kind of adaptation that we’ve come to expect from Hollywood at this point, and we wouldn’t be surprised if executive already tried to make this happen. In fact, it might be in the works already.

DVLA Number plates 2017 – THESE plates have been banned and here’s why https://briefnews.eu/dvla-number-plates-2017-these-plates-have-been-banned-and-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/dvla-number-plates-2017-these-plates-have-been-banned-and-heres-why/#respond Thu, 31 Aug 2017 12:25:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dvla-number-plates-2017-these-plates-have-been-banned-and-heres-why/

New ’67’ number plates will come into circulation from September 1st 2017.

Every six months new number plates are introduced into circulation with them used to give the car a unique identity and show its age.

But hundreds of new number plate combinations have been banned from entering circulation next week ahead of their release after being deemed inappropriate or offensive.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has banned approximately 300 new number plate combinations to avoid offence.

Any plate ending in ARS or DAM have been named as have NO67 FUN, NO67 END, MU67 GED, DO67 ERR, BA67 TRD and ST67 BBD.

TIP: Authorised DVLA Number Plates

A spokeswoman told AutoExpress that: “There’s nothing scientific about it. It’s all done by taste and if some slip through the net and we get a complaint, we take the feedback on board.”

However, in June the number plate JH11 HAD was spotted in Newport, South Wales, and reported to authorities and subsequently removed from the roads.

Following this discovers a FOI request by BBC Wales revealed that JE** HAD and *J11 HAD were also banned.

A letter by the DVLA stated that: “Such numbers are withheld if they are likely to cause offence or embarrassment to the general population in this country on the grounds of political, racial and religious sensitivities or simply because they are in poor taste when displayed correctly on a number plate.”

Other banned combinations of letters include:

Four-letter combinations: *B** UMS, *G** ODS and *R** APE

Five-letter combinations: AB** USE, AN** GER and BO** SOM

2004 vehicle registrations: A**4 RSE, BO04 ZZY and BL04 JOB

2011 vehicle registrations: BO11 OC*, DR11 GG* and PO11 CE*

Here is a list of plate combiantions that have been previously vetoed by the DVLA over the past few years, compiled by Auto Express:

DO67 GER – BU62 GER – SC12 OTM – PU15 SSY -DR12 UNK

LE61 ESS – BA67 ARD – PA12 EDO – AD13 CTS – HE12 OIN

ST12 OKE – P15 OFF – JE12 KOF – TE12 ROR – ***2 LUT

DO67 SHT – PR15 SON – CR12 PLE – MU12 DER – SH12 HED

***2 PEW – NA12 ZEE – FA61 *** – AS62 OLE – PE12 VRT

NO13 *** – DR12 UGS – TO62 SER – RU13 BUM -FF12 TUS

KO12 AAN – LE12 ZER – OR67 ASM

A DVLA spokeswoman said: “Many people enjoy displaying a personalised number plate and the vast majority of registration numbers are made available – but we hold back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.

“We try to identify all combinations that may cause offence, and on the rare occasion where potentially offensive numbers slip through the net, steps are taken to withdraw the number.”

Volvo XC60GETTY

The big-selling Volvo XC60 costs around £37,205

VOLVO XC60

Price: from £37,205

NOT so long ago, a feature on family cars including a Volvo would have meant one thing – a cavernous estate.

However, the success of its 4x4s has meant that it is the larger XC90 and this new XC60 that are hogging all the limelight of late (despite the brilliance of the V90 estate, incidentally).

The old XC60 accounts for a third of Volvo’s global sales and has been the best-selling mid-size premium SUV in Europe – and this new model shows every sign of continuing that.

Fantastic styling inside and out plus great build-quality and a decent line-up of engines will make it tough to beat especially with a T8 plug-in hybrid version due too.

CITROEN C5 AIRCROSS

Price: est from £20,000

NOT content with introducing one new crossover the C3 Aircross later this year, Citroen is also introducing its big brother the C5 Aircross early next year.

Like its smaller sibling, the C5 gets the same striking good looks (which we really love) and boasts a new suspension system that Citroen promises will bring class-leading comfort to the range.

Better than that, our early sight of the C5 Aircross suggests that it will have some much-improved build quality and there will be an impressive specification list, too, that includes, among other things, heated and massaging seats.

The only bad news is that we will have to wait so long for it to arrive.

TheThe Citreon C3GETTY

The Citreon C3 will include heated and massaging seats when it goes on sale early next year

VAUXHALL INSIGNIA SPORTS TOURER

Price: from £18,685

VAUXHALL has pulled out all the stops with its latest Insignia repmobile and this new Sports Tourer estate is no different.

Larger and more stylish than before, the Luton firm is estimating it will account for a fifth of all Insignia sales.

Along with a 560-litre boot, there’s a choice of three petrol or three diesel engines – all of which are turbocharged – good on-road manners and an all-new infotainment system.

Added to that is a standard equipment list to better most of the competition and Vauxhall’s brilliant OnStar system which makes the car a wifi hotspot as well as providing access to a call centre at the touch of a button.

PEUGEOT 5008

Price: est from £26,000

THE market for traditional seven-seater people-carriers has almost disappeared in favour of SUVs and crossovers, so the direction of this new Peugeot 5008 is little surprise.

Effectively a more spacious, extended version of its new 3008 crossover, this latest 5008 is a big step up from its talented but dated predecessor.

With the same hightech dashboard and dials, the 5008 gets the same range of new engines but with space for seven inside.

The rearmost pair of seats may only be big enough for children and young teens but that will be all that many at this level need.

Peugeot's 5008 GETTY

Peugeot’s 5008 cost is an estimated £26,000

RENAULT KOLEOS

Price: from £27,500

AFTER the popularity of its Kadjar and baby Captur, Renault is now looking to expand on its crossover range with this new Koleos.

The family-look is obvious and it is a good addition to the range, although rather oddly it will only be available with five seats when most rivals come with a seven-seat configuration.

Under the bonnet there is only a choice of two turbo-diesel engines – with no petrols available – as well as the choice of two- or four-wheel drive.

Inside there is a very good amount of space as you might expect in the rear seats, plus a decentsized boot – although that lack of a seven-seater might ultimately harm it against the competition.

The range rover velar costGETTY

The range rover velar price starts from £44,830

RANGE ROVER VELAR

Price: from £44,830

A MIDWAY point between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport, this new Range Rover Velar has been introduced to battle the likes of the Audi Q5, Porsche Macan and latest Volvo XC60.

As rivals go, none of those are exactly pushovers but first impressions of the Velar suggest that it has everything it needs to compete towards the very top of the class.

Engines from a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel right up to a supercharged 3.0-litre petrol with 380bhp mean there is a solid range, although it is a surprise not to see a hybrid in the line-up from the car’s launch.

We definitely like the sleek new exterior look though, as well as the high-tech interior which features a touch-sensitive panel alongside the usual screen.
