The South American football federation, CONMBEOL, announced in Paraguay on Tuesday that the postponed second leg of the final between the two Buenos Aires rivals would be played on either December 8 or 9. The game will not take place in Argentina.

No new venue was confirmed, although Miami in the US, Asuncion in Paraguay or even the United Arab Emirates have all been touted as possible new locations.

However, furious figures at Boca are demanding that River be disqualified from the competition altogether and that they be handed the title.

“Boca listened carefully to [CONMBEOL president Alejandro Dominguez’s] words,” Boca president Daniel Angelici told reporters after Tuesday’s announcement to reschedule the match for December.

“We have decided to submit a request for disqualification to River. Today we expand the petition with 46 more pages, with videos, photos and evidence. Now the Disciplinary Tribunal has to answer.

“I hope that the court gives its answer with reasons. We are not willing to play any matches until the court decides. We believe that there are reasons to attend our request,” he added.

“The rescheduling of the game is a decision of the CONMEBOL Executive Committee, not the Disciplinary Tribunal. We want them to adhere to the law, we believe that within CONMEBOL there are precedents for the request of Boca to be received positively.”

The Boca chief said the club would exhaust all legal avenues in a bid to see River disqualified from the competition, which is the biggest in South American club football.

“I have the duty and the obligation to defend Boca. It is a very serious fact, it is not about waiting for someone to die to make decisions.

“River have had many sanctions during this Copa Libertadores. Boca is going to exhaust all administrative instances,” Angelici vowed, adding: “we don’t have our minds on playing the final.”

Saturday’s game at River’s ElMonumental stadium was called off when home fans attacked the bus carrying Boca players to the stadium, smashing windows as they hurled objects at the vehicle.

Several players were injured by shattered glass while others were affected by police tear gas fired in the midst of the chaos.

The game was initially rescheduled for Sunday, although it was again called off amid protests that Boca players were not in a fit state to play.

The tie is evenly balanced at 2-2 following a thrilling first leg at Boca’s La Bombonera stadium earlier in November.

Buenos Aires mayor Horacio Rodriguez Larreta has said that weekend’s violence was a revenge attack after police raided the home of the leader of Barra Brava – an often violent wing of River Plate supporters – the day prior to the match.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona, meanwhile, has blamed the country’s president for the scenes.

Copa Libertadores final: Boca Juniors vs River Plate POSTPONED, Sunday 8pm kick-off https://briefnews.eu/copa-libertadores-final-boca-juniors-vs-river-plate-postponed-sunday-8pm-kick-off/ https://briefnews.eu/copa-libertadores-final-boca-juniors-vs-river-plate-postponed-sunday-8pm-kick-off/#respond Sun, 25 Nov 2018 05:02:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/copa-libertadores-final-boca-juniors-vs-river-plate-postponed-sunday-8pm-kick-off/
  • After two attempts at rescheduling, the Copa Libertadores final second leg is finally postponed until Sunday at 8pm GMT.
  • Boca Juniors bus attacked by River Plate fans as it travelled to El Monumental stadium.
  • Boca players injured, captain Pablo Perez sent to hospital for treatment
  • The first leg ended 2-2.

Copa Libertadores final: Boca Juniors vs River Plate postponed

01:40: It’s being reported that Boca president Daniel Angelici is talking with the club lawyers at the team hotel about the possibility of requesting a walkover victory

00:55: The second leg reportedly in doubt, with authorities suggesting they will not tolerate the bad behaviour.

Local newspaper Popular said: “Urgent, El Monumental is closed. The police of the city have refused to provide security for tomorrow.”

Meanwhile Ole report the game cannot be played on Sunday as things stand.

00:30: Boca players have arrived back at their hotel. At least the players are now safe.

00:25: Carlos Tevez has hit out at CONMEBOL. According to journalist Peter Coates, Tevez has said that he believes CONMEBOL want River to win.

Coates tweeted: “Meanwhile Carlos Tevez is talking to the press again & not mincing his words.

“He said the game shouldn’t go ahead tomorrow & suggested that CONMEBOL want to give the trophy to River.”

00:00: The bus has arrived back at the stadium ready to pick Boca players up and take them back to their hotel.

23:45: Reports of fans being robbed of their tickets as they leave the stadium. All tickets for the match will be valid tomorrow.

23:25: Boca players remain in the stadium, they won’t be leaving until the ground has been emptied. They’ll need a replacement bus too after the damage caused to the first one.

23:00: Boca president Daniel Angelici has issued a statement after the postponement: “We didn’t have the right physical or mental conditions for the game to go ahead.

“It was a difficult decision, but the right decision.”

22:50: Three years ago, River and Boca played in the last-16 of the Copa Libertadores.

But that match was abandoned at half-time after Boca fans attacked the River players with pepper spray in the tunnel.

Boca were kicked out of the competition, while River were given a bye into the quarter-finals.

Boca will probably think there’s double standards given how today’s incident has been handled.

22:45: Despite the awful scenes today, tomorrow’s match will not be played behind closed doors.

Fans will be allowed again but surely something will be done to prevent the images witnessed today.

22:40: Alejandro Dominguez, the president of Conmebol, has issued a statement saying both clubs asked for the match not to be played.

He said: “There was a request from both clubs that the game should not be played.

“One because they were not in a condition to play, and the other because they didn’t want to play under those circumstances. A gentlemen’s agreement.”

Pablo Perez

22:35: River Plate’s official Twitter account: “We ask all fans to keep their tickets, because they will be valid to enter the game tomorrow.”

22:30: Argentinian football expert Peter Coates tweeted: “So the Copa Libertadores final second leg between River Plate and Boca Juniors is finally OFF – they do it all over again tomorrow at 5pm.

“Now police just need to empty a packed Monumental without any further problems.”

22:25: WOW. Just when it looked like the match would go ahead it has now been postponed and will be played on Sunday with an 8pm GMT kick off. Remarkable.

22:20: Perez, despite being taken to hospital with an eye injury, has been named in Boca’s starting.

22:10: According to ABC journalist Dan Colasimone, tensions remain high outside the ground.

He tweeted: “Rubber bullets being fired outside of the Monumental now as tensions rise between River fans and riot police.”

Copa Libertadores

22:05: The referees are now out on the field and it does seem like the match will go ahead.

22:00: Carlos Tevez is not happy. The veteran Boca striker has blasted the decision to play and claimed they are being forced by officials.

He told Caracol Deportes: “We are not in a position to play the game, they are forcing us to play the game.

“Pablo has a patch in his eye.”

Team-mate Fernando Gago added: “We were very surprised, many players suffered, we struggled to breathe.

“It’s not the best way to prepare a game.

“The presidents of Conmebol and Fifa are who want us to play.”

21:50: The South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL, delayed the match twice before settling on a kick off time of 10:30pm.

21:40: As the Boca bus made its way to River’s El Monumental stadium it was attacked and badly damaged by missiles and other objects.

Boca players suffered cuts from broken glass and felt the effects of tear gas from the police.

Captain Pablo Perez and Gonzalo Lamardo were taken to hospital for treatment with the former having slivers of broken glass in his eyes and the latter a cut on his head.

21:30: Welcome to live coverage of the second leg of the Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors vs River Plate.

This match was due to get underway at 8pm GMT but it has been delayed by over two hours after scary scenes in Buenos Aires.

Race for Cox Plate runner-up heats up https://briefnews.eu/race-for-cox-plate-runner-up-heats-up/ https://briefnews.eu/race-for-cox-plate-runner-up-heats-up/#respond Sat, 13 Oct 2018 10:29:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/race-for-cox-plate-runner-up-heats-up/ GODOLPHIN duo Benbatl and Blair House exposed the thin stocks in Australia’s middle distance ranks when they belted their Ladbrokes (Caulfield) Stakes opponents on Saturday and at the same time added a bit of spice to the Cox Plate in a fortnight.

The imports made a mess of Australia’s ‘‘other’’ best horses, leaving a decent gap to multiple Group 1 winner Humidor and aspiring WFA candidate D’Argento.

Timeform expects the Cox Plate will still be a race for second, despite Benbatl’s lofty international rating. Benbatl is a 125 Timeform rated horse; Winx is 134.

The great mare has gone to 129 so far this season, and even at that figure, Benbatl would have to extend to 133 to beat her with the allowance mares get.

And what of The Autumn Sun?

He went into the Guineas as a 120 horse and will come out of it presumably a few points higher.

But going from 120 to 130+ in a couple of starts is a monumental ask, so you can understand Chris Waller’s conservatism with regards to the Cox Plate for the star colt.

Whether The Autumn Sun’s owners (which now include Arrowfield’s John Messara) want to try to convince the trainer otherwise remains to be seen.

From a racing fan’s perspective, it would add so much to the race if he was there.

A couple of well-regarded imports and Australia’s best three-year-old lining up would set the stage perfectly for the world’s highest rated horse to win her fourth in a fortnight.

CLIFFS’ CLIMB FASCINATES

IN BETWEEN D’Argento and Humidor in the Ladbrokes Stakes was The Cliffsofmoher, who was the eye-catching runner from a Cups point of view.

That was until Yucatan charged up Cup charts when winning the Herbert Power in a canter, further ramming home the disparity between the two hemispheres.

Lloyd Williams is now in a prime spot to win the Cup for a third year in a row.

The Cliffsofmoher is off the same prep as Johannes Vermeer, who ran second in both the Stakes and Caulfield Cup last year. The Cliffsofmoher is more highly regarded internationally and has 56.5kg (Johannes had 54.5kg) on Saturday.

How does that translate to the Youngstar/Kings Will Dream form behind Winx last week?

Hopefully Youngstar can continue the big spring carnival for winter graduates and get the job done.

FINED OVER WRONG HORSE

STRANGE happenings in Townsville on Friday when trainer Roy Chillemi was fined $ 500 for presenting the wrong horse on course.

Em Cee Rocket was declared a late scratching in Race 4 when it was established a different horse had been presented. Turns out, it was He’s Blessed.

In a further twist, Em Cee Rocket is dead. Chillemi was given He’s Blessed on the assumption it was Em Cee Rocket until the discrepancy was picked up on Friday.

Chillemi was found guilty of the same charge in 2003 when he presented the wrong horse as Southern Spur at Townsville.

Stewards must have become more lenient in the past 15 years, with Chillemi fined $ 1000 on that occasion.

DOOMBEN WASHOUT

RQ officials are certain to add more races to programs over the next week, but the ongoing wet weather is making it logistically hard to lock them in.

TAB meetings were washed out at Doomben, Gold Coast and Warwick on Saturday, in addition to Ipswich on Wednesday and Toowoomba (owing to excessive wind) on Friday night.

Ipswich has gone to Tuesday and Toowoomba will race on Monday.

Another casualty of the big wet was Gayndah, which had been planning a huge 150 year Queensland Derby celebration this weekend.

POSITIVE MOVE

A PRESS release from the office of Treasurer Jackie Trad on Friday night was the most positive sign yet that wheels are turning in the industry’s battle for a bigger slice of Point of Consumption receipts.

Trad welcomed “the decision of the industry to continue consultation with the government and withdraw the threat of strike action.”

“This is in the best interests of all stakeholders,” she said. “We look forward to working constructively with the industry going forward.”

HISTORY ON SHOW

THE Thoroughbred Racing History Association had a special evening last Tuesday to celebrate the opening of the Stanley Room at Doomben Racecourse, the centrepiece of which is the 1968 Cox Plate won by Rajah Sahib.

The Stanley Collection, which is a collection of trophies won by horses raced by Bill and Evelyn Stanley all over Australia, is housed in a specially outfitted room on the first floor of the public grandstand and will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10.30am to 1.30pm. It will also be open on selected race days or by appointment.

Thoroughbred History Association President Peter Howard said the exhibition was opened to coincide with this month being the 50th anniversary of Rajah Sahib’s Cox Plate win.

“In addition to the Cox Plate, Mr and Mrs Stanley won a Stradbroke (Rajah Sahib), Australian Cup (Cyron), Doncaster (Rajah Sahib), VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (High Sail), Adelaide Birthday Cup (Rajah Sahib), VRC George Adams Handicap (Cyron), and the Queensland Derby and VRC Dalgety (Mr Cromwell),” Howard said.

Bill and Evelyn’s involvement in racing started when they brought the six-year-old tried horse Garr Silk in 1949 and it took him 12 starts to win a race for them, that being a sixth division at Esk! They owned 99 horses over a period of 50 years.

WINTER WONDER

QUEENSLAND mare Winter Bride has continued on her winning way with a second Group 3 victory during the Melbourne spring carnival at Caulfield, reports AAP.

The Toby Edmonds-trained Winter Bride resumed from a let-up with a win in the Group 3 How Now Stakes on September 22.

And the four-year-old backed up that performance with another strong effort to narrowly take out yesterday’s Cape Grim Beef Stakes over the same 1200m course at Caulfield.

The victory extended the mare’s winning sequence to four races stretching back to the Queensland winter and took her overall record to eight wins from 16 starts.

With Ryan Maloney aboard, Winter Bride ($ 4.80) withstood a challenge from Booker ($ 13) on her outside to get home by a short-head in Saturday’s race with 1¼ lengths to Our Crown Mistress ($ 19) in third.

“She was game again today,” Edmonds said. “She had a bit of weight (57kg) and she has gone up pretty quickly in the weights so that was against her.

“And she’s also probably more adept with a bit of jar out of the track.

“I’m not sure where we’ll go now. We came down here taking it one race at a time and we’ll work out where we go after today.”

These Spoons Lick the Plate for You. Seriously https://briefnews.eu/these-spoons-lick-the-plate-for-you-seriously/ https://briefnews.eu/these-spoons-lick-the-plate-for-you-seriously/#respond Sat, 29 Sep 2018 19:58:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/these-spoons-lick-the-plate-for-you-seriously/ We are presented with a table of strangely shaped, bone-colored cutlery and delicate round foods — some of the items are recognizable, some not. Without any instruction, we must figure out how to eat the food using the curious utensils. This is an intimate tea ceremony at Basta, a restaurant in Tel Aviv, where guests are challenged to rethink the way they eat.

“I tried to reimagine the use of utensils and the different ways in which they meet the body and serve as its extension,” explains Israeli ceramics designer Avi Ben Shoshan. Someone asks Ben Shoshan how to eat two egg-shaped half shells, one filled with chocolate, the other with thinly sliced almonds. “There’s no right or wrong, just do whatever feels right to you,” he answers. But what feels right about suddenly consuming food differently from how humans have for centuries?

Ceramic designer Avi Ben Shoshan and pastry chef Michal Bouton

Somehow the experiment works. And beautifully. Ben Shoshan’s utensils are designed to match natural dining gestures — a curved spoon scrapes smoothly around the plate to collect the last morsels of a meal; another spoon soaks sponge cake with melted chocolate as it’s tilted toward the mouth. There’s also a spoon resembling a tongue that mimics licking.

It requires you to slow down, to be patient, to savor the small drips.

Ben Shoshan works with pastry chef Michal Bouton to design food too. Among their creations are frozen tea and milk cubes, both well-suited for Israel’s heat. The modular cubes allow diners to adjust their tea’s strength and milkiness; the temperature can be adjusted with hot water that’s served in a jug with two eye slits, a spout that resembles a mouth and handles that look like ears.

The inspiration hit while Ben Shoshan was working in an open kitchen in Tel Aviv in 2013 after studying industrial design at the Shenkar College of Engineering, Design and Art. At the restaurant he watched people dine for hours on end. “I interpret the spectacle of eating in many different ways,” he says, “from sexy and sensuous to bizarre and fascinating or grotesque and revolting.” He aims to draw attention to this by designing utensils that do not dictate the manner of eating — “rather,” he says, “it is the manner of eating that dictates their use.”

Or kaplan 7047

Ben Shoshan designed the spoons earlier this year with physical, intuitive and primary actions in mind. And that approach is a bit of a game-changer. When it comes to innovation in culinary arts, the food itself is typically the main focus; the tools we use for eating have stayed the same for more than 3,000 years. Ben Shoshan’s utensils are designed around practicality and interaction — the experience of licking the hollowed-out interior of a spoon requires you to slow down, to be patient, to savor the small drips.

Image (1)

You don’t have to be invited to a special tea ceremony to experiment with a licking spoon ($ 8) or self-saucing bowl ($ 14). The utensils are available at Ben Shoshan’s studio in Tel Aviv or via email. When arranging an appointment to visit his studio, ask if a demonstration — accompanied by Bouton’s pastries — is also possible. It’s a unique opportunity to experience what might best be described as cutlery choreography.

  • Irvine Company, a real-estate giant that runs 46 shopping centers in California, is sharing license plate information with a surveillance technology company that in turn provides access to that data to the US Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agency.
  • In 2017, Vigilant Solutions signed a contract to give ICE access to license plate database, sparking privacy concerns.
  • Vigilant Solutions provides the same services to various law-enforcement agencies, insurance companies, debt collectors.
  • Privacy groups have been critical of license plate databases and have described it as “a form of mass surveillance.”
  • Some cities have rejected Vigilant Solutions’s services outright due to it’s affiliation with ICE and its controversial enforcement policies for undocumented immigrants.

A real estate development company that operates shopping malls throughout California is sharing license plate information with a surveillance technology company that in turn provides access to that data to the US Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agency.

Irvine Company, which runs 46 shopping centers in California, said it employs the services of surveillance company Vigilant Solutions, which claims to use automatic license plate readers (ALPR) to “keep the local community safe,” according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit digital privacy watchdog.

California mall owner’s license plate readers send info to ICE https://briefnews.eu/california-mall-owners-license-plate-readers-send-info-to-ice/ https://briefnews.eu/california-mall-owners-license-plate-readers-send-info-to-ice/#respond Wed, 11 Jul 2018 01:37:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/california-mall-owners-license-plate-readers-send-info-to-ice/

Some shopping malls in California are scanning license plates and sending that data to a surveillance vendor that works with — and sells information to — Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. That’s according to a report by tech watchdog group Electronic Frontier Foundation, which discovered that a regional real estate company operating retail centers across the western state is feeding visitor information into a nationwide database that ICE reportedly gained access to at the beginning of this year.

The Irvine Company has installed automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) at “one or more” of its shopping malls in the city, according to its privacy policy, which notes that the information collected is sent to Vigilant Solutions. That’s the company providing license plate recognition data to ICE, The Verge reported back in January. While The Irvine Company’s retail locations are probably providing only a fraction of the 2 billion license plate photos in Vigilant Solutions’ database, nobody was aware that their license plates — and ergo, their behavior patterns and location information — were being collected while shopping.

ICE isn’t the only customer buying Vigilant’s data: The company also shares it with up to 1,000 law enforcement agencies, the EFF’s report noted. Its sister company Digital Recognition Network also sells information collected by ALPRs to financial lenders, insurance companies and debt collectors. And as the watchdog group pointed out, the only reason we know about this connection is due to a 2015 California law requiring ALPR operators to disclose their policies online. In other words, who knows what other companies are feeding Vigilant Solutions your license plate data?

Sydney FC secure Premier’s Plate https://briefnews.eu/sydney-fc-secure-premiers-plate/ https://briefnews.eu/sydney-fc-secure-premiers-plate/#respond Thu, 29 Mar 2018 23:04:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sydney-fc-secure-premiers-plate/ FOUR down, one to go – Sydney FC’s trophy cabinet is expanding again.

On a record-breaking night in Perth, the Sky Blues became the first team to retain the Premier’s Plate, and striker Bobo broke the competition’s scoring record for the regular season with his 23rd and 24th goals of this productive campaign.

A mostly comfortable 3-2 win over Glory was the perfect tonic for Sydney after their recent travails, and will put Graham Arnold’s side in good heart ahead of their must-win trip to Suwon Bluewings in the Asian Champions League on Tuesday – as well as the A-League finals series to come.

The retention of the Plate means Sydney have won the last four trophies on offer, after last season’s double and the FFA Cup victory in December. Securing the championship again in May’s grand final is the final target.

Perth has been such a happy hunting ground for Sydney in recent years that they had to be suffused with confidence, back at the ground where a year ago they had claimed the Premier’s Plate for the first time in seven years.

So it proved, the Sky Blues simply picking Perth off. Glory had their moments in attack but their defending remains startling naive.

Three goals in the first half for the visitors just proved it, and allowed Sydney to rediscover the early-season ruthlessness that has brought them to the brink of making history.

Brandon O’Neill’s perfect chip opened space for Bobo in the 12th minute, and though the Brazilian’s shot was parried by Liam Reddy, Mierzejewski followed up to ram the ball home.

Perth took the game to their visitors, but in the 28th minute Sydney broke to lethal effect.

Mierzejewski picked up a clearance in his own half and essayed a fabulous through ball that Matt Simon chased into the Perth box. As he shaped to shoot, Dino Djulbic lunged in and incurred a penalty.

By driving it into the bottom corner, Bobo was level with Fornaroli.

By halftime, he had the record to himself. Mierzejewski was again the architect, with a sweeping angled pass that allowed Bobo to break the Glory back line yet again. With his left foot, Bobo drove the ball through Reddy’s legs.

At 3-0, the game was largely done and Sydney – with an eye on next week’s Asian Champions League trip to Suwon – were content to sit back and play out the remainder.

Perth tried manfully to create a contest, and with 71 minutes gone they had a lifeline.

Xavi Torres’s through ball allowed Adam Taggart to spring Sydney’s offside trap – drawing Andrew Redmayne, Taggart rolled the ball in.

Briefly the visitors were ruffled, yet Sydney’s defensive composure was solid, another feature to please Graham Arnold as his team seeks to regain its momentum ahead of the finals.

With seconds left Taggart produced a brilliant second goal, swapping passes with Andy Keogh and sweeping home from distance. But there was to be no comeback, just celebrations for Arnold’s men, creating history yet again.

SYDNEY FC 3 (Adrian Mierzejewski 12m, Bobo 29m pen, 39m) PERTH GLORY 2 (Adam Taggart 72m, 89m) at nib Stadium. Crowd: 7,742. Referee: Kris Griffiths-Jones

ICE to use thousands of license plate readers on ‘hot list’ targets https://briefnews.eu/ice-to-use-thousands-of-license-plate-readers-on-hot-list-targets/ https://briefnews.eu/ice-to-use-thousands-of-license-plate-readers-on-hot-list-targets/#respond Sat, 27 Jan 2018 01:52:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ice-to-use-thousands-of-license-plate-readers-on-hot-list-targets/ Federal immigration agents will soon have access to an automatic camera system that can locate and track vehicles in real time. Civil rights advocates worry the technology will be used against Americans.

US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be able to track billions of license plates with the help of a third-party vendor that specializes in license plate reader (LPR) technology, according to a contract finalized earlier this month.

LPR is a system of high-speed cameras mounted on vehicles or stationary locations that automatically photograph license plates that come in the range of the devices. The system captures an image of the license plate and records the GPS location of the vehicle along with the date and time and other identifiable information.

“Like most other law enforcement agencies, ICE uses information obtained from license plate readers as one tool in support of its investigations,” ICE spokesman James Schwab said in a statement obtained by KPIX.

U.S. Air Force

The contract does not specify the commercial vendor, but an ICE representative told The Verge that the data will come from Vigilant Solutions, a leading network for licence plate recognition data.

According to its website, Vigilant can offer ICE access to more than five billion license plate detections that are stored in their servers. The company claims it is adding 150 new detections each month.

The data Vigilant Solutions collects is automatically stored in its cloud, which allows other law enforcement agencies to share the data with any agency that also uses the system.

Once ICE begins using the system, an agent will be able to search the massive database and find every time the system captured a vehicle over the last five years. Or, an agent could upload certain license plate numbers to a “hot list,” which will send a real-time alert to agents with the location of any vehicle of interest that is picked up by the LPR system.

The agents will be able to search for a person of interest by entering their address, plate number, or the year, make, and model of their car. The system can even locate a vehicle that does not have a license plate, according to the Chicago Tribune.

According to a Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA) conducted by the Department of Homeland Security in 2015, the LPR can collect information from “all vehicles that pass the camera.”

Homeland Security said the information can be used to “determine the whereabouts of subjects of criminal investigations or priority aliens to facilitate their interdiction and removal.”

“In some cases, when other leads have gone cold, the availability of commercial LPR data may be the only viable way to find a subject,” the PIA states.

While the contract states that ICE is “neither seeking to build nor contribute to a national public or private LPR database,” civil rights advocates worry the technology will eventually be used to track Americans as well.

“There are people circulating in our society who are undocumented,” Jay Stanley, senior policy analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union, told The Verge. “Are we as a society, out of our desire to find those people, willing to let our government create an infrastructure that will track all of us?”

ICE states that it has implemented internal policies to ensure the system is not used in violation of privacy rights. The agency will only be able to use LPR data in support of a criminal investigation or to locate a priority alien, according to their PIA. Agents will also be required to validate every person on the “hot list” after a year and update the list when a case is resolved.

However, Sanders worries that the size and scope of the LPR system would have never been approved by Congress if it had been created by the agency instead of a private corporation.

“If ICE were to propose a system that would do what Vigilant does, there would be a huge privacy uproar and I don’t think Congress would approve it,” Stanley says. “But because it’s a private contract, they can sidestep that process.”

YOU should check your number plate NOW as you could be risking £1,000 fine, here's why https://briefnews.eu/you-should-check-your-number-plate-now-as-you-could-be-risking-1000-fine-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/you-should-check-your-number-plate-now-as-you-could-be-risking-1000-fine-heres-why/#respond Sun, 07 Jan 2018 15:58:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/you-should-check-your-number-plate-now-as-you-could-be-risking-1000-fine-heres-why/

Drivers are being warned that they can .

Keeping your car clean can often be impossible with sudden changes in weather and while there is no law saying drivers should wash their vehicles,  there is one that requires the number plate to be dirt free.

In the colder winter months cars are much more likely to get dirty because of the road surface.

This is due to the constant wet conditions plus grit and salt on the road from the temperate weather conditions.

Driving causes all of this dirt to be thrown into the air by the rear tyres which will splatter the back of the car – much like on a bicycle when driving through a puddle.

When this sits and sticks to the number plate it could make it illegible which is when a driver can be fined.

The Government clarifies the legal position as follows: “Number plates (also known as licence plates) should show your vehicle registration number correctly.

“You can’t rearrange letters or numbers, or alter them so that they’re hard to read.”

In addition to the £1,000 fine it is enough of an offence for a car to fail its MOT.

Previously the DVLA explained the rules  “There is a specific offence under the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994 of obscuring or allowing a registration mark to be not easily distinguishable.

“All registration numbers must be displayed clearly and correctly on the number plate – this helps the police, enforcement agencies and members of the public to correctly identify a vehicle to assist road safety and traffic enforcement”.

Legal requirements of a number plate:

-be made from a reflective material

-display black characters on a white background (front plate)

-display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)

-not have a background pattern

Number plate rules:

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle

Motorcycles and motor tricycles registered on or after 1 September 2001 must only display a number plate at the rear of the vehicle.

If you ride a motorbike or motor tricycle registered before 1 September 2001 you can also display a number plate at the front, but you don’t have to.

Motorcycle and motor tricycle number plate numbers should be on 2 lines.

Towing a trailer

Your trailer must display the same number plate as the car you’re towing it with.

If you’re towing more than one trailer, the number plate must be fixed to the trailer at the back.
