MTV has “severed ties” with The Challenge star Dee Nguyen over a pair of since-deleted tweets in which she made light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd.

Nguyen on Saturday tweeted, “Idk why some of u think I’m anti BLM. I’ve been saying that since the day I lost my virginity.” She also commented on an Instagram post about Floyd, writing that “people die every f–king day,” according to Us Weekly.

In response to these posts, MTV on Monday took to social media with an announcement of its own: “As a result of Dee Nguyen’s offensive comments on the Black Lives Matter movement, we have severed ties with her,” the MTV reality competition series announced via Twitter on Monday, June 8. “Out of respect for our Challengers, we’ll air our season as planned. We strongly condemn systemic racism and stand with those raising their voices against injustice.”

Nguyen reacted to her firing Tuesday morning on Instagram: “The last 24hrs have made me realised what is important and that is forgiveness. I would like to offer my sincerest apology to my colleagues to whom I have hurt directly and indirectly due to my insensitive remarks. Let me be clear I am a POC that cares about BLM. I believe in this movement and I’m stepping away from social media to focus on my wellbeing and mental health. This is not a goodbye, it’s a I will see you again.”

First introduced to TV audiences via the British reality hit Geordie Shore, Nguyen joined The Challenge franchise in 2019, competing in War of the Worlds and War of the Worlds 2.

Walmart has abandoned its plans to launch a new streaming video service, according to a report from CNBC. Instead of throwing resources behind a new product, the company will instead focus its attention on expanding its existing video platform Vudu. In response to the report, Walmart told Variety that Vudu is its focus but “to say that we aren’t thinking about different ideas often would be false.”

Rumors of Walmart getting into the streaming business started last year when the retail giant had its eyes on competing with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. At one point, Walmart was reportedly was in conversations with media executive Mark Greenberg, the former President and CEO of Epix, about creating a streaming platform that would target “Middle America.” The concept was boosted by the (short-lived) success of the Roseanne reboot and the groundswell of support for the cancelled Last Man Standing.

Vudu has always been a bit of an afterthought in streaming since Walmart acquired the on-demand video service in 2010. Rather than offering a streaming library for a monthly subscription fee, Vudu lets users watch rent or buy individual shows and movies. According to a report from Variety last year, the platform is the third-largest pay-per-view digital video service in the US, trailing Apple’s iTunes and Amazon Video. Walmart announced last year a plan to start producing original content for Vudu.

Two of the vessels, gunboats ‘Berdyansk’ and ‘Nikopol’, were mounted with “weapons and ammunition exceeding the standard loadout,” Deputy Head of the Russian Coast Guard, Aleksey Volsky told reporters on Saturday.

Their “artillery systems were loaded and placed into combat-ready mode” when they met the Russian vessels, according to Mikhail Shishov, who leads the Investigative Directorate at the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Citing a document obtained on board one of the Ukrainian gunboats, Shishov said that the ships were given instructions to “concentrate the efforts on a stealth passage” of the strait that separates mainland Russia and Crimea.

Three Ukrainian sailors were wounded during the standoff. The FSB said on Saturday that all of their injuries were sustained from the pieces which broke off their own boat as it was fired upon by the Russians. “There were no direct bullet wounds,” the official pointed out.

Shishov also noted that a resident of Ukraine’s breakaway Donetsk People’s Republic told the FSB that he “identified” one of the detained crewmen. The person alleged that the detainee had “tortured” him during his own detention at some point, leaving “very serious injuries.” Shishov didn’t reveal any more details of the allegation, only saying that the detainee in question belongs to Kiev’s chief spy agency, the SBU.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko blasted the seizure of Ukrainian vessels as “an act of aggression” and violation of international law. Ukrainian officials have been referring to the arrested 24 sailors as POWs – something Moscow says goes against the 1949 Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

“The Ukrainian side has attempted to present its officers as prisoners of war. But those detained Ukrainian sailors are charged with criminal offences,” Shishov stated. “According to the Convention … they cannot be prisoners of war, since Russia and Ukraine are not in a state of an armed conflict or war.”

A pair of Avengers favorites are teaming up on the small screen: Marvel is developing a miniseries about superheroes Falcon and Winter Soldier for Disney’s streaming service, our sister site Variety reports.

Empire co-executive producer Malcolm Spellman has been hired to pen the series, which would be one of the previously announced standalone series Marvel is bringing to Disney’s streaming service, including series centered on Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch.

Falcon is played by Anthony Mackie in the Marvel movie franchise, with Sebastian Stan playing the Winter Soldier, aka Bucky Barnes. It’s unclear if they’d reprise their roles in the miniseries, but they very well might, since Hiddleston and Olsen are reported to be returning to star in their characters’ TV series.

All of this is still a long ways off, though: Disney’s streaming service doesn’t even have a name yet, or a launch date — though it’s expected to debut in late 2019. Plus, we can’t help but note that Netflix recently cancelled two of its Marvel superhero series, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, which may signal that all future Marvel TV content will live exclusively on the Disney streamer.

“We are looking at opening air service between Crimea and Syria,” he told journalists. The peninsula and the Arab country are also interested in opening a steamship line. “Some ports need to be refitted to receive vessels with deeper draught. When the actual agreement is signed, it will be clear what type of vessels will be allowed and what they will transport,” Aksenov said.

A Crimean delegation is visiting Syria on Monday and Tuesday to discuss trade and economic cooperation. Russia has also recently begun shipments of grain from Crimea to Syria. The shipments are coming from the Russian port of Sevastopol to the Syrian port of Tartus, where Russia has a naval base.

Crimea and Syria are both under international sanctions. “The Syrian economy suffers not only from the war, but also from the sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies. The Crimea is also under such pressure, in this we are very similar. Such visits are important for overcoming difficulties, for developing our economies and for understanding how together we can resist this,” said Mohammad Samer al-Khalil, Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade of Syria.

Nintendo has been on an excellent run between the release of the Switch and its mini retro consoles, and the Wall Street Journal reports that next year its new hardware launch could be a revised version of the Switch. Pitched as a way to “maintain sales momentum” it’s unclear exactly what might change in a new version, but one possibility is swapping its LCD screen out for a more battery-friendly and better-looking OLED display, although it’s likely to stick with LCD.

This generation we’ve seen Sony update its hardware with the PS4 Pro while Microsoft has released multiple iterations of its console including the Xbox One S and One X, so this may be a way for Nintendo to extend the life of its console too. It also just launched Switch Online with cloud saves that make it easier for users to switch between systems, and with another year of development the software should be even better.

Also up for discussion is its 3DS handheld, as the paper reports software developers are waiting to hear about its future. The next Nintendo earnings report is scheduled for October 30th, although if the new system isn’t planned for launch until the second half of 2019 we may not hear any updates for a while.

The meeting was called by Russia on Friday and held on Monday, August 27, Antonov said. He commended the US side for coming at such short notice, and described the meeting as “constructive and professional.”

At the meeting, Russia officially conveyed its concerns over reports that Washington together with France and the UK is gearing up for another set of airstrikes in Syria under the pretext of a chemical attack, that would immediately be blamed on the Syrian government. Moscow has asked Washington to “provide the facts without delay” to substantiate the newly-surfaced allegations that Damascus uses chemical weapons against its own people.

Such rhetoric fanned by Washington may prompt militants and their “pseudo-humanitarian” organizations like the White Helmets to mount another provocation using chemical agents, Antonov warned.

Intelligence Russia has gathered has been shared with the US, and the diplomats were told “in detail” about the provocation against civilians being prepared by Al-Nusra Front (now known as Tahrir al-Sham) in the northwestern province of Idlib.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported earlier that Tahrir al-Sham was plotting a chemical attack that would then be marketed as another “atrocity” by the “Syrian regime.” Eight canisters of chlorine have been delivered to a village near Jisr al-Shughur city, and a specially trained group of militants, prepped by the British security company Olive, also arrived in the area to imitate a rescue operation to save the civilian “victims.” Militants plan to use child hostages in the staged incident, according to Antonov.

Moscow cautioned Washington against falling for this provocation, noting that a massive airstrike targeting Syria’s military and civilian infrastructure will constitute another act of “groundless and illegal aggression” against Syria.

“A new escalation in Syria does not correspond to interests of any party. We believe that our concern will be heard,” Antonov said, adding that he hopes the US “will take every effort to prevent terrorists from using toxic chemicals and will be acting responsibly, in accordance with the status of the UN Security Council permanent member.”

President Trump’s National Security Advisor John Bolton stated last week that the US “will respond very strongly” in case of a chemical attack by Damascus. The warning was interpreted by the Russian Defense Ministry as a veiled confirmation that the US has been mulling an airstrike on Syria similar to the one it carried out in April, alongside France and the UK.

Ryanair passengers experienced hundreds of cancelled flights last week due to pilot strikes across Europe.

Pilots in Belgium, Sweden, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands were on strike for 48 hours last Friday (10 August).

Approximately 67,000 passengers were affected by the flight cancellations, with it being the fifth day of strike action for Irish pilots.

Passengers travelling with Ryanair later this year may be worried that they could face further cancellations – are more strikes planned?

Ryanair pilots in Ireland are meeting with the airline to discuss the problem, with strikes currently on pause.

Talks between Ryanair and Irish Air Line Pilots’ Association (IALPA), part of the pilot union FORSA, will commence today.

The talks are hoping to solve the grievances surrounding promotions and annual leave allocation.

Former chairman of the Workplace Relations Commission Kieran Mulvey will act as a mediator between them after discussions fell apart between them.

Pilot union FORSA accused Ryanair of threatening to end 300 jobs in Ireland or move them elsewhere while the airline disputed their frequent claims to meet.

IALPA-FORSA spokesman Bernard Harbor told Morning Ireland that the threat of redundancies had made discussions slightly more difficult.

He remained optimistic, however: “This isn’t the hardest problem we’ve ever seen in industrial relations, it can be resolved, so let’s get down to business and try and do that.”

Ryanair’s chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said: “We hope that, with third-party mediation, FORSA will now take control of their side of the process.

“We want a resolution in place that means that there will be no more strikes here.”

Under EU law, flights that are cancelled due to strike action can result in compensation up to €400 (£357) depending on the duration of the flight.

Ryanair disputed this by stating it was due to “extraordinary circumstances” which is not covered.
