Monday will see NASA’s first attempt at real-world testing of a technology that it hopes can protect the Earth from the dangers posed by impacts from large asteroids. The Double Asteroid Redirect Test, or DART, will smash a spacecraft into a small asteroid called Dimorphos at 7:14 pm US Eastern time in the expectation that the impact will alter Dimorphos’ orbit around the nearby large asteroid Didymos. If successful, then we can have some confidence that we can alter the orbit of small objects that pose a threat of colliding with Earth, sending them off into orbits where they no longer create a risk of catastrophic impact.

There are still things that can go wrong. As we detailed earlier, the camera on DART won’t even be able to resolve its target until under two hours prior to the collision, and the final trajectory to impact will be handled by its on-board software, rather than controllers on Earth.

NASA will be hosting pre- and post-impact briefings for the press, which Ars will be attending, so expect updates later today. One option if you want to watch for yourself is coverage on NASA TV, which will start at 6 pm US Eastern.

Planetary Resources just took an unusual turn on its path to asteroic mining. ConsenSys, a blockchain company created by Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin, has bought Planetary Resources for an unspecified sum. It sounds supremely trendy given the combination of blockchain and private spaceflight, but it’sa logical fit if you ask Planetary Resources’ Brian Israel. Blockchain-based smart contracts represent a “natural solution” for commerce in space, Israel said — there are no territorial divisions, so this may be an ideal way for people from various countries to “coordinate and transact.”

ConsenSys will run its space strategy at Planetary Resources’ former Redmond, Washington location. Both Israel and Planetary Resources chief Chris Lewicki are joining ConsenSys as part of the deal.

The newly united companies haven’t outlined a roadmap at this stage. However, the acquisition is as much the result of financial necessity as anything else. The company has edged closer to its plans of asteroid mining by testing its technologies in space, but it recently laid off employees after failing to secure an important funding round. ConsenSys’ takeover gives Planetary Resources a lifeline that should keep its plans intact, even if it’s now likely that the company will delay a key asteroid inspection mission past its original 2020 target.

A new study by NASA scientists has led them to believe “planetary collisions are at the core of our solar system’s formation.”

According to NASA, scientists have long believed that after the moon’s formation, Earth experienced an extended period of bombardment some 3.8 billion years ago, called ‘late accretion’.

During this period, Earth was barraged with moon-sized planetary bodies, also known as planetesimals, that penetrated our planet all the way down to its core. As a result, these collisions embedded extensive amounts of metal and rock-forming minerals into Earth’s mantle and crust.

NASA now estimates that around 0.5 percent of Earth’s present mass was delivered during that period of planetary evolution.

The study was carried out by the space organization’s System Exploration Research Virtual Institute, the Southwest Research Institute and the University of Maryland. Together, they created high-resolution impact simulations to demonstrate the severity of the collisions.

Published in the journal Nature Geoscience, the study found much more evidence of platinum, iridium and gold than would be expected in normal core formation, a discrepancy which can “most easily” be explained by late accretion after the core formation was complete, according to Simone Marchi, one of the study’s authors.

“These results have far-reaching implications for moon-forming theories and beyond,” said Marchi. “Interestingly, our findings elucidate the role of large collisions in delivering precious metals like gold and platinum found here on Earth.”

Proxima Centauri, the star closest to our sun, may have an “elaborate planetary system,” according to new observations that detected cold cosmic dust in the region.

Last year, the European Space Agency discovered the rocky exoplanet Proxima B orbiting within the habitable zone of the star, but NASA later dashed hopes that the planet could be habitable.

New observations from the ALMA Observatory in Chile suggest now that there is more to this system than just a single planet and there could be in fact several more hidden planets surrounding our neighbor star.

ALMA data revealed emission from clouds of cold cosmic dust around the star, suggesting the possible presence of an elaborate planetary system, according to the ESO.

“The dust around Proxima is important because, following the discovery of the terrestrial planet Proxima B, it’s the first indication of the presence of an elaborate planetary system, and not just a single planet, around the star closest to our Sun,”  lead author of the  study, Guillem Anglada, from the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (CSIC), Granada, Spain, explained.

There are also hints in the ALMA data of another belt of even colder dust about ten times further out.

Scientists say the possibility of an outer belt is intriguing, considering its very cold environment far from a star that is cooler and fainter than the Sun.

Both belts are much further from Proxima Centauri than the planet Proxima B, which orbits at just 4 million kilometres from its parent star

“This result suggests that Proxima Centauri may have a multiple planet system with a rich history of interactions that resulted in the formation of a dust belt.”

Researchers say further study is necessary to get amore detailed picture of Proxima Centauri’s planetary system and determine possible locations of the unidentified additional planets.

The 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq and the 2011 NATO intervention in Libya both came after the leaders of those countries submitted to international pressure and relinquished their programs of weapons of mass destruction in exchange for sanctions relief.

North Korea for its part chose confrontation with the world community, successfully developing nuclear weapons and currently, rapidly perfecting the means of their delivery.

“As I told my colleagues yesterday, they will eat grass but will not stop their program as long as they do not feel safe,” Putin said. “What can restore their security? The restoration of international law.”

ST. LOUIS, Mo.—More than just about anything, Robert Zubrin would like to see humans visit and then settle on Mars during his lifetime. The aerospace engineer has made a living of identifying technologies needed to get astronauts to the Red Planet and trying to build a public consensus that Mars is humanity’s next great leap.

Zubrin also likes to knock down hurdles and roadblocks that he sees standing between humans and Mars. Concerned about radiation? Don’t be, Zubrin says, because the in-flight dose won’t be appreciably greater than some US and Russian astronauts have accumulated during long-duration missions to the International Space Station. And what about the cost? If NASA were to buy services directly from industry and bypass the cost-plus method of contracting, humans could walk on Mars for tens of billions of dollars, he says.

Of late, Zubrin has been bothered by another potential difficulty between humans and the exploration and settlement of Mars—planetary protection. This is the prime-directive-style notion that humans should not contaminate other worlds with Earth-based microbes and, on the flip side, that humans should not introduce any potentially dangerous pathogens to Earth.
