Turkey has been devastated by tornados this week, with the southern province of Antalya enduring much damage. Antalya is a resort city highly popular with Britons keen to escape to the Mediterranean. Shocking video footage captured the fifth Tornado in four days hitting Antalya’s international airport. The alarming clip shows the 100kmph twister rampaging cross the airport causing havoc in its wake. Planes can be seen propelled from the force of the tornado while two buses and a minibus are completely flipped. Two sets of airstairs are toppled in the video from the strength of the high winds. Debris can also be seen hurled across the airport as the twister shifts. Authorities said 12 people were injured in the tornado when a bus transferring passengers to the plane was overturned. None are believed to be in a critical condition. The shocking footage of the tornado was captured by travellers at the airport. Antalya Governor Münir Karaloğlu told Turkish news channel NTV two planes and a police helicopter suffered significant damage in the storm. An Airbus A321-231 belonging to Onur Air, and a Boeing 737-MAX8 belonging to Corendon Airline were the two planes damaged. After the storm, authorities surveyed the damaged and cleaned up the airport to avoid further delays, Karaloğlu said. He told Daily Sabah yesterday he hoped the worst was now over and air traffic had returned to normal. A total of 229 buildings had sustained damage due to the extreme weather, Environment and Urbanisation Minister Murat Kurum said. Tornados in Turkey are a rare occurrence and tend to be sighted at sea rather than on land. Turkey holidays are rocketing in popularity with Britons thanks to the low prices available in the Middle Eastern country. The annual Post Office Holiday Money Report revealed the renewed popularity of Turkey is the most striking travel trend of the year. This comes after the Turkish lira collapsed in value last year meaning Britons’ pounds can go further in Turkey, making for much cheaper holidays. The ongoing weakness of the Turkish lira means holidaymakers can expect their pounds to stretch almost 29 per cent further in Turkey than a year ago. Marmaris, a Mediterranean resort town along the Turkish Riviera, is in the top three cheapest European beach destinations. Prices have fallen 18.7 per cent since last year. According to Post Office figures, a cup of filter coffee costs just 96p in Turkey compared to £1.91 in Mexico or £2.30 in Greece. Gatwick Airport flights have all been grounded since last night when drones were spotted illegally flying over the airfield. The major security alert resulted in outbound flights being diverted and incoming planes diverted. They will remain disrupted for a further 24 hours, the hub has said. Passengers have been advised against travelling to the airport without checking the status of their flight first. Flights have been diverted to other airports including London Heathrow, Luton and Manchester as well as Paris and Amsterdam. This is the latest travel advice for travellers due to fly to or from the London airport, whether flying with Ryanair, easyJet, British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. Thursday 20 December, 11.05am Gatwick have announced passengers flying to or from Gatwick will face at least another 24 hours of disruption. Passengers will not be entitled to compensation as a result of the incident but they could be entitled to food, accommodation and transport. “Whilst these extraordinary circumstances unfortunately mean you are not entitled to compensation, you may still be entitled to meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation or transfers,” said Alex Neill, Which? Managing Director of Home Products and Services. “You don’t have to cancel your tickets though, as depending on the length of the delay, your airline should be providing you with alternative travel options or accommodation.” Thursday 20 December, 10.52am Police are now appealing for help in identifying those responsible for flying the drones over Gatwick. “We are appealing for information to help us identify the operators of the Gatwick drones,” Sussex Police tweeted. “If you know who’s responsible or have any information please call 999 and quote ref 1350-19/12.” Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw has said the incident is “absolutely” a deliberate act. He said: “This has been going on for 10 hours now. Each time we believe we get close to the operator, the drone disappears; when we look to reopen the airfield, the drone reappears. I’m absolutely convinced it’s a deliberate act to disrupt Gatwick Airport.” Thursday 20 December, 10.24am Police have said there is no evidence the drone incident at Gatwick is terror-related. Sussex police tweeted: “We are carrying out a joint search with Gatwick Airport for the operators of drones sighted at Gatwick. Public safety is paramount and we will take all available actions to disrupt this deliberate act. There are no indications to suggest this is terror-related.” The last sighting of the drone was at about 8.45am today, police have said. Gatwick chief operating officer Chris Woodroofe has said police do not want to shoot the devices down because of the risk from stray bullets. The airport is due to remain closed until 11am now, according to Eurocontrol. Thursday 20 December, 10.15am Experts say they believe the drones were deliberately used to create as much disruption at the airport as possible. Former RAF fighter pilot and instructor Jon Parker, now an airline pilot, regularly flies into Gatwick and runs drone training company Flyby Technology. He told Sky News: “It sounds like more than one drone has been used which seems to me like it could be a concerted effort to disrupt operations.” He added: “The usual practice is to suspend flights for half-an-hour which is the usual battery lifespan for drones but it may be in the Gatwick case whoever is responsible for this have had several batteries and have brought their drones back to the ground to put new batteries on them.” Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw tod BBC more than 20 police units are searching for the drone operator. He said: “I’m absolutely convinced it’s a deliberate act to disrupt Thursday 20 December, 10.05am Rail operator LNER is offering free travel between London and Edinburgh for all passengers unable to fly between the two capitals due to Gatwick’s flight cancellations. To qualify for free travel on LNER trains, passengers should show their flight ticket for their cancelled journey to the train manager. Thursday 20 December, 9.52am Ryanair has updated their travel advice on their website with the statement: “We have been advised that London Gatwick Airport expected to re-open at 10am (20 Dec) following an earlier runway closure. Please check the status of your flight before travelling to the airport.” Virgin Atlantic has posted the statement: “Flights to and from London Gatwick airport have been suspended this morning due to reports of drones flying close to the airfield. “The safety and security of our customers and crew is our number one priority and we may be forced to delay or divert flights until the airport resumes full operation. We would like to assure any customers due to travel with us that we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to their travel plans. For the latest information please check Flight Status.” Thursday 20 December, 9.45am Gatwick’s boss has said one of the drones is a heavy industrial drone. It is illegal to fly drones within 1km of an airport boundary. The offence is punishable by up to five years in prison. “All flights to and from Gatwick are suspended due to ongoing drone activity around the airport,” Gatwick have tweeted. “Unfortunately, there are significant delays and cancellations to all flights today. Please do not travel to the airport without checking the status of your flight with your airline first. We apologise to everyone affected, but the safety of all our passengers and staff is our number one priority.” Thursday 20 December, 9.17am Chris Woodroofe, COO of Gatwick Airport, told Sky News: “The police have 20 units out looking for the operator of that drone, and once they find them, they will bring them to justice, which is five years imprisonment for endangering an aircraft.” EasyJet is advising passengers to not travel to Gatwick if their flights have been affected. Thursday 20 December, 9.13am Gatwick said 110,000 passengers were due to either take off or land at the airport on 760 flights today. Thursday 20 December, 9.03am Norwegian has announced all its Gatwick flights are grounded. Customers can be fully refunded if their flights are affected or they can rebook for free. “Following reports of drones flying over Gatwick’s airfield in the early hours of this morning all flights remain suspended at the airport,” a Norwegian spokesperson told Express.co.uk “Norwegian would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and we advise customers to check the status of their flight on Norwegian.com before travelling to the airport. “Customers on flights that have been cancelled can rebook free of charge or receive a full refund. The safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority.” Thursday 20 December, 8.18am Gatwick Airport has said police are still hunting for the person(s) responsible for flying the drone after another device was sighted just before 7am. European air traffic management group Eurocontrol has said the runway will remain closed until 10am. Thursday 20 December, 8.15am It is illegal to fly drones close to airports. According to dronesafe.com: “On 30 July the UK drone rules changed to make it against the law to fly above 400ft (120m) and to make it against the law to fly your drone within 1km of an airport or airfield boundary. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has tweeted: “It is totally unacceptable to fly drones close to airports and anyone flouting the rules can face severe penalties including imprisonment. Anyone operating a drone must do so responsibly and observe all relevant rules and regulations.” Thursday 20 December, 8.10am Gatwick Airport confirms all flights remain grounded on Twitter: “Due to drone activity on the airfield at Gatwick, all arriving and departing flights are currently suspended. “Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport today. We’re sorry to everyone affected, safety is our number 1 priority.” They added: “Please do not travel to the airport without checking with your airline first.” Thursday 20 December, 7.50am Check-in queues at Gatwick continue to expand despite all flights being suspended. Furious passengers have complained of being stuck in planes for hours. Many were forced to sleep overnight on the floor of Gatwick Airport or on planes stuck on the tarmac. Thursday 20 December, 7.45am easyJet announced on Twitter: “Due to the LGW closure overnight, we expect there to be some disruption to flights this morning. “We advise customers to check flight tracker before travelling. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.” British Airways released a statement, saying: “All flights to and from London Gatwick airport are suspended while authorities investigate reports of drones flying close to the airfield.” Thursday 20 December, 7.40am According to travel expert Simon Calder well over 50 easyJet flights would have been affected by the security breach and is the “worst affected airline,” Calder said on Good Morning Britain today. Calder said the breach could be serious: “The Sussex Police believe there is more to it than a couple of idiots with a couple of drones flying,” he said. The incident could cause particular trouble for those flying long haul due to the competition over seats at this time of year. Calder said: “It is looking bad. If your flight is cancelled you go right to the back of the queue – you are struggling for seats and there are few seats available at this time of year.” He cautioned passengers could be affected by flight disruption right up to Christmas Eve as a result of the drone incident. “If you are flying long haul, even if the airport opened right at this very minute, there would still be hours of disruption and it could be up to before Christmas Eve before it is sorted out,” he said.

The Saudi Press agency released a statement on Saturday explaining that the coalition was able to “increase their capacity” for refueling their aircraft and would do so independently going forward.
On Friday, Reuters reported, citing unnamed US officials, that Washington considering ending the refueling of coalition aircraft in Yemen, citing both the coalition’s own increased capabilities and growing international outrage over the human consequences of the war in Yemen. Opposition to US collaboration with the Saudi coalition in Yemen has increased following the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
The Saudi-led coalition has been accused of targeting hospitals, water infrastructure, and other civilian targets, and raids on wedding parties and the recent bombing of a school bus have sparked international condemnation. The US and UK have both been criticized for continuing to sell arms to the coalition despite their targeting of civilians and alleged war crimes.
According to the UN, some 14 million Yemeni people – fully half the country’s population – are dependent on food aid for their survival, and more than 400,000 children are suffering from serious malnutrition. The destruction of civilian infrastructure has facilitated the growth of the worst cholera epidemic in history. The Saudi-led blockade of the port city of Hodeidah threatens to make things worse, as it is the entry point for most of the country’s food aid and medical supplies. Tens of thousands of civilians have died both as a result of airstrikes and because of starvation and disease.

According to Michael O’Leary, CEO of Ryanair, the next revolution in flying is “aircraft operated by a single pilot in the cockpit”, and it’s already here.
“We already have the technology,” said O’Leary in an interview with Business Insider Polska, adding that the next stage will be completely autonomous aircraft.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Russian military aircraft — everything from long-range bombers to advanced fighters to spy planes — have ventured close to Alaska three times this month, twice prompting US F-22 stealth fighters to intercept the aircraft.
Two pairs of unidentified Russian maritime reconnaissance aircraft flew past northern Alaska Friday, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) announced in a statement, noting that while the surveillance aircraft entered the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone, they remained in international airspace.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Called out on Twitter by Charles Shoebridge, a former army officer, Scotland Yard detective and counter terrorism intelligence officer, his post points out a few details the BBC missed: The Russian plane was in international airspace and the Black Sea –over 2,000km from the United Kingdom– is actually on Russia’s doorstep.
“RAF fighter jets have intercepted a Russian military aircraft over the Black Sea for the second time in a week,” the Ministry of Defence told the BBC. “The Typhoons were scrambled from a base in Romania on Thursday after a Be-12 maritime patrol aircraft was seen heading south-west from Crimea towards NATO airspace.”
The keyword here: towards. In other words, a Russian plane, at its own border, thousands of kilometers away from the United Kingdom was seen heading over neutral waters in, roughly, the direction of NATO airspace.
The irony was not lost on folks in the Twittesphere. “Don’t let facts get in the way of some pro-war propaganda!” said one user, tagging the BBC.
Another user dubbed the BBC’s report of UK planes agitating Russian planes for flying at their own border as “very Orwellian,” while another just suggested an alternative, more accurate, headline.
Surely it should be the other way round. A British fighter aircraft spotted close to the #Russia border. It’s all very Orwellian!!

@BBCNews don’t let facts get in the way of some pro-war propaganda!

I did laugh at the article, so bad.
“RAF intercepts plane which is in it’s own airspace” would be more accurate.

This isn’t even the first time this week that the UK’s defence force has proudly and bravely taken on Russians at their own border. On Tuesday, the UK’s royal air force spruiked its global air-policing prowess, boasting that RAF Typhoons based in Romania were launched “in response to two suspected Russian Su-30 Flanker aircraft operating near NATO airspace over the Black Sea.” In other words, near Russia’s own border yet again. You’d think a country policing its own borders was illegal or something.
Additionally, Tuesday’s NATO mission was such a roaring success that royal air force pilots said they didn’t even get “within visual range to see” the Russian jets. So Russian planes flew about in the sky kind-of near to NATO jets –but not close enough to see them– and then they went on their merry way.
The BBC’s spin makes it almost look like the UK wants Russia to “go away and shut up” – or is that something that Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson actually once said? It’s hard to tell what’s what these days.

Holiday plans were thrown into disarray after luggage belts failed at East Midlands Airport in Leicestershire on Saturday.
Hundreds of passengers found themselves at their holiday destination without any of their luggage.
The airport blamed a “technical issue” and has apologised to affected passengers.
Travellers took to social media to vent their frustration on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
Marie Moore posted online: “East Midlands Airport having massive problems with luggage belts today and 52 cases missing from our flight to Lanzarote. FR3172.
“One of which is ours, an absolute nightmare start to our family holiday!!! I’m absolutely devastated!”
David Hidle tweeted: “Absolute chaos for all flights leaving from East Midlands Airport today, failure of baggage belts and numerous flights leaving without bags.
“Ground crew at arrival airports next to useless.”
The problems began after one of the conveyor belts which transports luggage to the aircraft hold broke down at 3am Saturday morning, according to local paper Leicestershire Live.
A second conveyor belt then became overloaded and also broke down. Engineers were called and the belt fixed.
The issues affected was is known as “slot one” which is when the early morning flights depart from East Midlands Airport – and is one of the busiest time of the day.
Staff at the airport then had to deal with the backlog of luggage which caused further hold-ups.
Easy Midlands Airport released a statement on Saturday apologising.
“A baggage systems fault at East Midlands Airport this morning (Saturday 14 July 2018) has resulted in some passengers departing without their baggage.
“We understand the significant inconvenience that this will cause to people who want to enjoy their holiday.
“Together with airline ground handling teams, we are working hard to reunite all affected passengers with their luggage as quickly as is possible. Luggage left behind will be on the next available flight to those destinations where people are affected.
“We apologise unreservedly to all passengers who have been affected by this fault today.
“Departing passengers are advised to allow extra time to pass through the airport while we work to fully restore the service.”
The airport is advising passengers seeking compensation to speak to their airlines.
