Staff shortages at the Meadow Lake Hospital continue more than a year after Kendal Carlberg was forced to give birth to her daughter on the side of a road.

The investigators knock, then enter the detritus-riven apartment. It is the home of a man who hanged himself, a man nobody discovered for two years because nobody came to check, and because Sweden’s ubiquitous automatic bill-pay system never stopped debiting his rent. “Sometimes I wonder why we are so unhappy,” murmurs the investigator, staring out the window. “There’s nothing to glue us together.”
In state-loving Sweden, can’t the government fix that? Maybe, filmmaker Erik Gandini argues in his documentary The Swedish Theory of Love. Gandini’s made movies about Guantanamo and consumerism, but this one hits at a perennial darling of the American left: the Scandinavian paradise, where a strong welfare state defends even the poorest against privation. In Sweden, nobody is supposed to need to depend on their family for financial support. But that’s led to a nation where about one in 10 people die without their family burying them, and where 40 percent of the population reports loneliness. “I took the liberty of questioning some very fundamental ideas,” Gandini says. “Not because they’re bad, but because they could be better.” Bernie Sanders, he says, was “absolutely right” to hold Sweden up as an example … but no one’s perfect.
Gandini is half Swedish, half Italian; he says he feels Italian in Sweden and Swedish in Italy. In 2009 he made a documentary, Videocracy, about Silvio Berlusconi’s deleterious effect on the Italian press and its freedoms. Italian TV banned ads for it, both lending it new publicity and, well … sort of proving Gandini’s point. Born and raised in his father’s boot-country homeland, he settled in his mother’s Sweden partly because of the ideal of independence. Now divorced with three kids, he says he’s no romantic — and he’s not trying to expose some great lie about Swedish utopia. He just wants things to get better.
The Swedish Theory of Love isn’t likely to be banned anytime soon in cooler-headed Sweden; Gandini says Swedes don’t deny the loneliness his film presents. Instead they embrace it — there’s even a Swedish phrase, “Ensam Är Stark.” Lonely is strong. Indeed, in 2014, 47.5 percent of Swedish households consisted of a single adult with no children, by far the highest percentage of single households in the EU. The numbers exemplify “a political vision,” one that Charlott Nyman, a professor of sociology at Sweden’s Umeå University, was part of in an intentional push to give women more equality in Swedish society. But Gandini contends it may have backfired for some — in 2014, Sweden had the fourth-highest divorce rate in Europe. To make his point, Gandini interviewed people who meet in the forest to hug (really!) just to feel human connection, and others who, bereft of a social life, take to combing the woods for missing persons in teams.
Yet Sweden’s abandonment of intimacy isn’t cut-and-dried. Nyman, who studies single females, says older women she interviewed had mostly been in relationships, and while many were happy to be independent, everyone she interviewed saw companionship as a goal. “They wanted someone to take a bike ride with,” she says, “but they weren’t lonely in an existential kind of way.” For Nyman, Sweden’s social policies encouraging independence are in part a feminist issue: They were introduced to allow women to break free of the home, and to abandon the notion of relationships for relationships’ sakes.
“These sorts of narratives have their own legs and feet,” says historian Lars Trägårdh, who coined the term “Swedish theory of love” for the idea that all relationships should be chosen, not maintained out of cultural loyalty, duty or need. He says that despite notions of American individualism, the U.S. is a very “communitarian” country — people are expected to provide for their children and their parents, and to depend on them as well. Though Trägårdh watched and enjoyed Gandini’s film, he says there’s little data to back up the idea that Sweden’s individualism makes people unhappy. “There’s a big difference between people who’ve chosen to live alone and unwanted loneliness,” he says. “We have an idea that individualism leads to alienation and unhappiness, but there’s very little evidence for that.”
This isn’t just about Sweden. In New Zealand, 18 percent of young people report feeling lonely — much more than the country’s elderly population, who are normally ground zero for loneliness in society. Meanwhile, research in the U.K. and Denmark has found that elderly members of migrant communities are more likely to report loneliness than their native-born counterparts — but that in the next generation, that disparity disappears. Between 1996 and 2006, the number of people around the world living on their own increased by 33 percent.
Maybe the answer isn’t traditional relationships. Nyman says several of her subjects were drawn toward Living Apart Together relationships, in which two people cooperate without cohabitating, reducing the chance that women will wind up doing the housework and emotional labor for two. It’s one of many changes around the world in the way people negotiate love and marriage, an attempt to find a better system that’s resulted in polyamory and three-parent households, among other things.
For Gandini, the answer’s obvious: Sweden’s refugees. Sweden sees more asylum applications than any other European country, but Gandini says the bar to truly becoming Swedish is impossibly high. He argues that Sweden is missing an opportunity to reinvigorate itself. But Swedish government statistics have found that only 60 percent of immigrants to Sweden have found a job within seven years of arriving. “There’s been an ambition to create a pluralistic society,” he says, “but it’s very segregated.” Perhaps, he hopes, in an echo of progressives across Europe, in the inverse of an anti-immigrant cry across the world, a new influx of foreigners could bring his society together, rather than dividing it.

Home to universal health care, a generally friendly people and a charming — some might sexy — prime minister, Canada is, all things considered, a decent place to hang your hat. But one Canadian province is facing a deadly serious health crisis — one that’s expected to get worse.
In 2016, Diabetes Canada found that:
The health organization compiled information from Statistics Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the National Diabetes Surveillance System, and the data shows a stark reality: The prevalence of diagnosed Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in Newfoundland and Labrador — which form a single province — has gone up 44 percent in the past decade, and Diabetes Canada predicts it will rise another 25 percent in the next 10 years. “The rates are increasing very rapidly,” says Lisa Matte, Atlantic regional director for Diabetes Canada. “It’s not a good picture.”
The national portrait is also cause for concern. The Canadian average is 25 percent, and several other provinces and territories are up around 30 percent. From a global perspective, the number in Newfoundland and Labrador is higher than the 30 percent rate of diabetes and prediabetes in the U.S., but still lower than the estimated 47 percent of people in China who are affected by one of these conditions.
While the Canadian data factors in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, the majority of people on the island of Newfoundland and mainland Labrador suffer from Type 2. “Type 1 is considered an autoimmune disease, so not much can be controlled or prevented,” says Matte. “But Type 2, while it tends to be genetic, is activated by modifiable risk factors, including an unhealthy diet, a lack of physical activity and being overweight or obese.”
They have this perfect storm over there.
Lisa Matte, Atlantic regional director, Diabetes Canada
When it comes to these particular risk factors, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians have the cards stacked against them. The province has the country’s highest rate of overweight and obese adults — 67 percent — and its smoking rates are higher than anywhere else in Canada. “They have all the serious factors that contribute to a higher prevalence of diabetes,” Matte says. “They have this perfect storm over there.”
Newfoundland faces other factors as well. The risk for developing diabetes increases with age, especially after 45. Newfoundland and Labrador have the oldest median population of any province in Canada — 46 years — and 21.2 percent of the population is 65 or older, according to the 2016 Canadian census.
There’s also very little migration in and out of the region, making the population genetically isolated. “If there are genetic predispositions to diabetes in Newfoundland, they’re not being diluted by mixture from other genes,” says Hertzel Gerstein, an endocrinologist and professor at McMaster University in Ontario. Because of this genetic isolation, Newfoundland has been at the center of several studies aiming to identify the genes implicated in common diseases. Research conducted in the early 2000s found that Newfoundland has one of the world’s highest incidences of Type 1 diabetes. The exact cause of the disease is unknown, but researchers believe it’s a combination of genetic and environmental factors, like exposure to certain viruses or living in a cold climate.
The elevated rate of Type 2 in Newfoundland and Labrador has not been studied as extensively, but Gerstein notes a high prevalence of diabetes in other genetically isolated populations like the Pima Indians in southwest Arizona and some First Nations in northern Ontario. If there’s a genetic predisposition for diabetes in Newfoundland, it’s likely triggered by cultural influences, Gerstein says, “that discourage physical activity and encourage the consumption of high-energy, high-density food.”
For more than a decade Diabetes Canada has promoted programs like the Healthy Students and Healthy Schools initiatives, and the Provincial Food and Nutrition Framework and Action Plan to get locals moving more and eating right. And it works closely with the provincial government to create a diabetes strategy, including improved access to medical care and diabetic supplies like insulin in the predominantly rural region.
Still, the increasing rate of diabetes here illustrates how challenging it can be to change lifestyles. At the current rate, it’s likely to take several decades to lower the prevalence of a disease that darkens the future of an otherwise sunny northern nation.

Dr. Jake Huntington is following in the wake of unknown disease across Zanzibar in the 1890s, a journey that soon descends into places beyond sanity and reality. Prose and illustrations, presented with the aesthetic of aged journal, describe the dangerous adventure, offering you choices along the way. Your version of Jack has a number of skills that define success or failure in various situations – Fighting, Observation, Medicine, Agility, Speechcraft – which, combined with the weapons and equipment in your inventory, can take you down different narrative branches.
But your decisions affect more than just the direct path of the story. Your sanity is an ever-present concern looming over the story (as expected in any Lovecraftian tale) and this can influence how your companions react to you and how you can react to choices. Your stats play a role as well; being very observant might make you notice more details…but of course knowing more eldritch knowledge is usually not healthy for one’s well-being.

LASSA fever has been causing havoc in Nigeria with the number of cases being usually high for the time of year. The disease has been likened to the plague and reports say the current outbreak could “cause dangerous epidemics”. So what are the symptoms to look for and is there a cure?![]()
Members of the audience attending the audition phase of Britain’s Got Talent have been subjected to extra checks entering the building, reports the Daily Star.
The auditions, that were being held at the London Palladium, are said to have a substantial amount of extra security compared to previous years.
The security has been brought in to protect the Britain’s Got Talent judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon, and David Walliams.
Security has also been increased around presenters Ant and Dec.
Britain’s Got Talent bosses are apparently not taking any chances at the auditions following a spree of acid attacks throughout London.
The show’s auditions, which are currently being filmed at the London Palladium, have seen fans going through extra checks, with security confiscating any open bottles of water.
A spokesperson for the talent show told the Daily Star: “We take the safety around the show very seriously.
“We continually review security procedures to meet our needs.”
The news follows reports of a fire on stage after an act dropped his flaming prop.
A source told the Mirror: “We are used to all sorts happening on the show, but this really was the most crazy audition we have ever seen.”
Even judge David, 46, said: “Well, that got slightly out of hand.”
A fan commented on the tighter security on Twitter, saying: “London Palladium are stopping people taking opened bottles of water/drink in.
“Then they’re sellIng 500ml bottles of water to audience members for £2.50.”
Although this may sound normal for any large venue, the fan went on to confirm: “They didn’t do this a year ago.
“How sad they’ve decided to profit from the situation!”
Britain’s Got Talent returns to ITV later this year.
Bed bugs are a problem for travellers who choose to stay in dirty accommodation or unwashed facilities.
One traveller was even a victim of bed bugs from plane seats after a flight on British Airways, much to her surprise.
Those looking to travel to the US this year should note which cities are the worst for the pests, with pest control company Orkin revealing where are the worst-hit spots.
It isn’t great news for anyone heading to Maryland.
Baltimore came out on top for the worst place for bed bugs to fester.
Also making the top ten were Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, popular destinations for British travellers when choosing America as a holiday.
Thankfully Orlando, which is known as home to Disneyland Florida, has fallen off the Top 50 list for the first time.
The study analysed bed bug treatments that were reported between 1 December 2016 and 30 November 2017 and used residential buildings as well as hotels in the discussion.
Orkin entomologist Dr Tim Husen explained: “They continue to invade our homes and businesses on a regular basis because they are not seasonal pests, and only need blood to survive.”
He also revealed that a clean property could still be plagued by the creatures.
He explained: “Any type of home is prone to bug bed bugs. It has nothing to do with sanitation.
“We have treated for bed bugs everywhere, from newly built upscale homes to public housing.”
Guests who want to check if their hotel or apartment is home to bed bugs can look out for some telltale signs.
The bed and the mattress are the most obvious places to look and any blood smears or white eggs that are 1mm show the creatures live there.
Other places they can hide are in cupboards or skirting boards that meet the carpet.
It is advised to avoid putting suitcases on the bed or any fabric luggage holders to avoid bringing them home.

In the early 2000s, a deadly gut infection began to surge. After decades of lurking in intestines and hospitals—more opportunistic nuisance than lethal threat—the bacterium Clostridium difficile abruptly exploded, spreading rapidly and causing more severe diarrheal disease than ever before. By 2011, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that C. diff infected nearly half a million people in the US that year, killing approximately 29,000.
Two strains led the deadly reign: RT027 and RT078 (named based on the genetic code of their ribosomes, or “ribotype”). But scientists could only speculate as to why this duo was suddenly so menacing. At least one of them turned up with resistance to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, which contains ciprofloxacin among other common antibiotics. This fact led some researchers to suggest that the bacteria’s rise may have been linked to development of that drug resistance.
But scientists had identified fluoroquinolone resistance in C. diff back in mid-80s. Why would it suddenly matter? There was another, cryptic factor at play, it seemed.

Tutorials purporting to show How To Stream Sky Sports On Kodi have plagued YouTube
YouTube tutorials teaching Kodi users to pirate live content from the likes of Sky Sports, BT Sport, and more, is available to watch for free.
Searching YouTube for videos about streaming Sky Sports on the Kodi platform returns more than 150,000 videos.
Many of these boast thousands of views, but the most-viewed have 500,000 hits under their belt.
For those unaware, Kodi is a neutral, open-source media player which can be installed on a broad range of devices – from discount set-top boxes powered by Android, to well-known branded devices, like Amazon Fire TV Sticks.
Apps – known as add-ons – built by the passionate community of third-party developers allow users to stream premium content, like paid-for sports and movie channels for free.
So-called Kodi Boxes are devices, manufactured by a number of different brands, with all the requisite third-party software to stream paid-for content for free preinstalled on the set-top box.
Streaming paid-for content for free without the permission of the rightsholder is illegal.
And that’s exactly what scores of these YouTube tutorials are teaching Kodi novices to do.
Videos entitled “How To Watch Live Sports On Kodi 2017” and “How To Watch All Sky Sports & Bt Sports Channels On Kodi For Free – 100% Working” have thousands of views.
Express.co.uk approached Google, which owns YouTube, for comment on these videos.
EXPRESS NEWSPAPERS
YouTube is filled with tutorials revealing how to stream Sky Sports and other paid-for channels free
A spokesperson for YouTube told Express.co.uk, “We take protecting creativity online seriously and we’re doing more to battle copyright infringement than ever.
“YouTube respects the rights of copyright holders and has invested heavily in copyright and content management tools to give rights holders control of their content.
“When a copyright holder notifies us of a video that infringes their copyright, we remove the content promptly, and terminate the accounts of users with multiple copyright strikes.
“In addition, we offer tools such as YouTube’s Content ID system that gives rights holders an automated way to identify, block, promote and even make money from their content.”
Because of the sheer amount of content uploaded to YouTube every hour, the video hosting site often relies on the online community to flag content as inappropriate.
Earlier this year, research from FACT revealed that there are now one million Kodi Boxes in use across the UK.

The open-source Kodi media player can be installed on a range of different devices
The FACT research was conducted in association with the Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit, Intellectual Property Office, Police Scotland, and anti-piracy outfit Entura International.
It estimated that up to 25 per cent of the online viewing public access content illegally online.
According to the FACT report, the UK is one of the countries most affected by the increasing demand for Kodi boxes.
Those supplying the Kodi Boxes range from individuals building boxes for a select few friends and family, to sprawling organised crime networks.
There has been a steady stream of reports of individuals who have been arrested for selling these devices, however, FACT claims these are just the “tip of the iceberg”.
According to FACT, there are a number of large-scale operations currently in the early stages.
However, the organisation is unable to specify any other details at the moment. The crackdown on so-called Kodi Boxes in the UK is likely to carry severe penalties.
Back in April, the EU Court of Justice judgement in the Filmspeler case included confirmation that streaming by end users on illicit set-top boxes, like those powered by Kodi, constitutes an infringement of copyright.
The Digital Economy Act, which came into effect in October 2017, extends criminal penalties for online copyright infringement to match those of physical copyright infringement.
That means the maximum prison sentence that can be awarded in online copyright infringement cases has increased from two years to 10 years.
This change could result in longer custodial sentences for the criminals involved in distributing illicit streaming devices.
Ibiza has become invaded by a “plague” of rats, according to local Spanish news reports.
Dozens of the infectious rodents have invaded the city of Ibiza’s Es Pla de Vila area on the coast.
Rat corpses are being left on the pavements, while for months, residents living on the popular tourist island have shared photos and videos of corpses and living rodents in social networks.
The rats are believed to have come from an abandoned building site covered in trash in the centre of the city.
The problem has been made worse by the rubbish bags left to fester on the pavements, due to a poor bin collection service.
The People’s Party, who are the opposition party, have commented on the problem – which they refer to as a “plague”.
“Far from being solved, the problem of plagues grows every day, and there are continuous complaints about this issue in all neighbourhoods of the city.”
Parent associations at nearby schools have also voiced concerns about the presence of rats in playgrounds for a year.
The People’s Party addressed not only the island’s rat problem, but also the overwhelming number of cockroaches invading.
They added that the growing number of rats and cockroaches in the city is “a problem with an obvious public repercussion”.
This is because it is a tourist city, so one of the main objectives for the city council should be to ensure hygiene and public health on the street.
Representatives from the party have asked the local Government of Vila to provide information about the measures they are adopting, if any to tackle the vermin problem.
Ibiza, along with other Balearic islands such as Majorca, are currently facing a tourism crisis as the local government plans to implement a tourism tax in summer this year.
The controversial tourist tax will force holidaymakers to pay up to €4 extra a day.
Cruise ship passengers will also be required to pay €2 each a day, even for a stop off on the island lasting less than 12 hours.
The move may cause cruise ships to boycott the Balearic Islands, following a row between the Cruise Lines International Association and the Balearic government.
