Strictly 2019: Saffron Barker due for tragic exit after placing bottom in the leaderboard? https://briefnews.eu/strictly-2019-saffron-barker-due-for-tragic-exit-after-placing-bottom-in-the-leaderboard/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-2019-saffron-barker-due-for-tragic-exit-after-placing-bottom-in-the-leaderboard/#respond Sun, 24 Nov 2019 11:44:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-2019-saffron-barker-due-for-tragic-exit-after-placing-bottom-in-the-leaderboard/

Strictly Come Dancing 2019 has been an interesting year for Strictly fans, as the BBC show has thrown a lot of curveballs at the contestants. Last week saw the tragic exit of Michelle Visage, after fans rallied around her the week before. This week, following on from the iconic Blackpool episode, saw the contestants struggle to find their feet again.

The challenging week left some contestants a little worse off than others, but ultimately, it was a low-scoring week on the show.

YouTube star and youngsters’ favourite Saffron Barker struggled to keep it together alongside her partner AJ Pritchard.

The 19-year-old took on the Samba to Walking on Sunshine this evening, which wowed crowds and fans, but didn’t do too much for the judges.

Unfortunately for Saffron, this performance left her joint last with Alex Scott and her partner Neil Jones.

Both pairs were left with scores of 26, which is considered quite low at week ten.

Since then, bookmakers have been furiously adjusting their odds – and things don’t look good for Saffron.

According to Coral, Saffron and AJ are the evens favourite to be eliminated from the results show this evening.

This would be a dreadful loss for Saffron, who has consistently worked her way up through the show over the past ten weeks.

However their luck may not be entirely out just yet, as Alex and Neil aren’t far behind them.

The pair have been given a 2-1 odds on leaving the show this evening – which, although better than Saffron and AJ, certainly isn’t the greatest odds.

Coral’s John Hill explained: “Saffron survived the dance-off last week, however, our betting suggests she will have no such luck this week as she is the favourite in our elimination market following the latest performances.”

Meanwhile, things haven’t changed for Kelvin Fletcher, who is still the odds-on favourite to win the competition outright with 2-5 to claim the Glitterball Trophy.

Karim Zeroual, despite having a tough night as well, is still sitting with an impressive 4-1 odds on winning as well.

OddsMonkey spokesperson Peter Watton recently spoke about last week’s results, and how this week could indeed follow the same pattern.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Peter said: “Many people might have been shocked by Michelle Visage, Bookmakers included.

“But the Social Media stats tell us otherwise. In the week she went she gained less than one per cent, the same as Saffron Barker who was in the dance off with her.

  • Cambridge Analytica may have broken US election laws by having dozens of its foreign employees serve in decision-making roles on Republican campaigns in 2014.
  • Whistleblower Christopher Wylie said he sat in on several high-level campaign conference calls that featured foreign-born Cambridge Analytica leaders.
  • The group advised these campaigns on how to target and uncover “hidden Republicans” that they could take advantage of.
  • This level of involvement took place despite a lawyer’s memo that outlined why such activity might be illegal.

Cambridge Analytica is under the microscope once again, but this time for previously undisclosed activities back in 2014, well before it joined President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.

The Washington Post reported Monday that the data mining company, which has come under fire for using the data of 50 million Facebook users without their permission to craft targeted ads for Trump’s campaign, sent dozens of employees who were not US citizens to advise Republican midterm campaigns on strategy and messaging in 2014, potentially violating election laws prohibiting foreign nationals from taking part in decision-making processes on political campaigns.

Researchers create less invasive method for placing brain electrodes https://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-less-invasive-method-for-placing-brain-electrodes/ https://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-less-invasive-method-for-placing-brain-electrodes/#respond Tue, 19 Dec 2017 02:41:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/researchers-create-less-invasive-method-for-placing-brain-electrodes/

Our neurons are firing all the time, receiving signals from other neurons and sending signals of their own. To get a better understanding of how the brain works, scientists often listen in to those signals to see what kind of messages certain neurons send and how often they send them. Doing that often requires researchers to implant an electrode into the brain, which when it’s close enough to a neuron, can pick up on the electrical signals that propagate through the neuron. However, getting an electrode into the brain isn’t so easy. They either have to be rigid enough to penetrate the brain and remain straight or be inserted through needles that can keep them straight until they’re safely in place. The problem is those rigid structures cause damage as they move through the brain and minimizing that damage is a goal that scientists are constantly working towards.

Researchers in Texas have come up with a new method that allows them to insert tiny, flexible electrodes into the brain, reducing inadvertent damage. Just trying to push the electrodes into brain tissue doesn’t work — they buckle and can’t get into the tissue. These researchers instead placed the electrodes inside small tubes and surrounded them with a viscous fluid. When the fluid was quickly pushed through the device, it pulled the electrode along with it and with enough force for the electrode to penetrate millimeters deep into tissue on its own.

“The electrode is like a cooked noodle that you’re trying to put into a bowl of Jello,” Jacob Robinson, a Rice University researcher on the project said in a statement. “By itself, it doesn’t work. But if you put that noodle under running water, the water pulls the noodle straight.” And the team pointed out that with flexible items, it’s easier to pull them than push them. “That’s why trains are pulled, not pushed,” said Rice University chemist Matteo Pasquali. And because it surrounds the electrode, the fluid’s pull is distributed all along the electrode, preventing it from buckling when it hits the tissue.

The team showed that their device could successfully insert a flexible electrode into a gel, a small, squishy, water-dwelling organism called a Hydra, slices of mouse brain and living rats’ brains. In the Hydra, brain slices and rat brains, the researchers were able to record neuronal activity with the electrode.

This method could be very useful for scientists studying the brain and the researchers say it has the potential to be used in treatment applications that use electrodes to manage certain conditions like epilepsy or allow people to control artificial limbs.

The research was recently published in ACS Nano Letters. You can check out the fluidic microdrive in action in the video below.

‘Pharma Bro’ Martin Shkreli says he used ‘poor judgment’ in placing a $5,000 bounty for Hillary Clinton’s hair https://briefnews.eu/pharma-bro-martin-shkreli-says-he-used-poor-judgment-in-placing-a-5000-bounty-for-hillary-clintons-hair/ https://briefnews.eu/pharma-bro-martin-shkreli-says-he-used-poor-judgment-in-placing-a-5000-bounty-for-hillary-clintons-hair/#respond Tue, 12 Sep 2017 23:17:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pharma-bro-martin-shkreli-says-he-used-poor-judgment-in-placing-a-5000-bounty-for-hillary-clintons-hair/ Martin ShkreliREUTERS/Lucas Jackson

Former pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli apologized on Monday to a federal judge after offering a $ 5,000 bounty for some of Hillary Clinton’s hair.

In a letter addressed to Judge Kiyo Matsumoto, Shkreli wrote that he “used poor judgment” and “never intended to cause alarm or promote any act of violence.”

“I wanted to personally apologize to this Court and my lawyers for the aggravation that my recent postings have caused,” Shkreli wrote. “I understand now, that some may have read my comments about Mrs. Clinton as threatening, when that was never my intention when making those comments.”

Shkreli, who was found guilty on two counts of securities fraud, caught the Secret Service’s attention after he wrote a Facebook post last week that read: “The Clinton Foundation is willing to KILL to protect its secrets. So on HRC’s book tour, try to grab a hair from her… Will pay $ 5,000 per hair obtained.”

Following the post, he added a disclaimer, according to CNBC: “(this is satire, meant for humor and not an endorsement of violence against a truly wonderful public servant).”

Federal prosecutors didn’t find the post humorous and asked the court to revoke Shkreli’s $ 5 million bail. Citing “escalating pattern of threats and harassment,” prosecutors alleged that Shkreli was a “danger to his community,” Fortune reported.

Read Shkreli’s entire letter:

Dear Judge Matsumoto:

I wanted to personally apologize to this Court and my lawyers for the aggravation that my recent postings have caused. I understand now, that come may have read my comments about Mrs. Clinton as threatening, when that was never my intention when making those comments. I used poor judgment but never intended to cause alarm or promote any act of violence whatsoever. To the contrary, within minutes of posting my remarks about Mrs. Clinton’s hair, I posted quite clearly that I was absolutely “not” encouraging anyone to assault anyone. It never occurred to me that my awkward attempt at humor or satire would cause Mrs. Clinton or the Secret Service any distress.

I want to assure Your Honor that I am not a violent person, have never personally engaged in any violent behavior, nor have I ever intentionally encouraged anyone to do so. I apologize for my behavior and ask you respectfully not to change my bail status so that I may continue to assist my attorneys in preparing for my sentencing.

Respectfully,

Martin Shkreli

If there is one thing I hate, it’s optimization. Computers don’t actually understand what they are optimizing. And that creates problems for everything from bicycles to nuclear fusion.

The process goes something like this: you have a mathematical model of a bicycle. You want your bike to perform better, but there are so many things that can be changed, so you can’t imagine finding the best configuration on your own. So you write a script. The script will vary the configuration of the bicycle and evaluate whether it is improved. After many iterations, you have the perfect bike, right?

No, you don’t. What you didn’t imagine was that the computer would remove the seat. Or that it would place, for no apparent reason, a third wheel between the (now removed) saddle and handlebars. Even worse, the stupid machine has got the chain passing through a bit of solid steel.

Barcelona SHUNS tourists by hiking prices and placing a BAN on new hotels https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-shuns-tourists-by-hiking-prices-and-placing-a-ban-on-new-hotels/ https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-shuns-tourists-by-hiking-prices-and-placing-a-ban-on-new-hotels/#respond Wed, 26 Apr 2017 21:25:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barcelona-shuns-tourists-by-hiking-prices-and-placing-a-ban-on-new-hotels/

Spain’s thriving metropolis of Barcelona is fed up with visitors.

The city’s 1.6 million residents have been swamped with 32 million travellers last year alone.

New rules set out by Barcelona’s mayor mean you might be less welcome on your 2017 summer holiday.

Ada Colau has enforced a ban on any new hotels opening in the city.

But that’s not the only policy bulking up her Strategic Plan For Tourism 2020.

Incoming visitors who are on day trips will be charged higher prices, thanks to a hike in parking rates.

There are also plans to reduce the amount of segways and electric scooters in the main tourist hubs of the area.

Vacation apartments will be taxed at the highest property rates and there will be no new licenses provided for tourist accommodation.

Deputy mayor Janet Sanz told AP: “We have to stop this free-flow that operates without any control in the city.”

But hotel and retail businesses in the city have slammed the mayor for “demonising” tourism.

Nuria Paricio, director of Barcelona Oberta, an association of over 6,700 shops and businesses, said the situation was “a scourge”.

She added: “This plan is not going to stop the illegal apartments that are appearing like mushrooms in Airbnb and other platforms and that are responsible for pushing the prices of rentals in apartments.”

Tourism comprises 14 per cent of Barcelona’s GDP, employing over 100,000 people.

Trump signs executive order placing ‘regulatory reform’ task forces within federal agencies https://briefnews.eu/trump-signs-executive-order-placing-regulatory-reform-task-forces-within-federal-agencies/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-signs-executive-order-placing-regulatory-reform-task-forces-within-federal-agencies/#respond Fri, 24 Feb 2017 22:49:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trump-signs-executive-order-placing-regulatory-reform-task-forces-within-federal-agencies/ DONALD TRUMP SIGN EXECUTIVE ORDER ON REGULATORY REFORMS, WASHINGTON DC, USA - 24 FEB 2017Rex Features via AP Images

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday to place “regulatory reform” task forces and officers within federal agencies in what may be the most far reaching effort to pare back U.S. red tape in recent decades.

Trump signed the directive in the Oval Office with chief executives of major U.S. corporations standing behind him including Dow Chemical, Lockheed Martin and U.S. Steel.

The sweeping order directs every federal agency to establish a task force to ensure each has a team to research all regulations and take aim at those deemed burdensome to the U.S. economy and designate regulatory reform officers within 60 days and must report on the progress within 90 days.

“Excessive regulation is killing jobs, driving companies out of our country like never before,” Trump said before signing the order. “Every regulation should have to pass a simple test; does it make life better or safer for American workers or consumers?”

The effort is part of a Republican push to undo many of the actions of former President Barack Obama, who left office last month after two four-year terms.

In 1981, President Ronald Reagan created a presidential task force on regulatory relief but that effort did not establish task forces at the cabinet level. Other presidents including Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, carried out attempts to reduce or streamline government regulations.

Trump’s order requires agencies to “measure and report progress in achieving the president’s directives.” Each task force will make recommendations on which regulations to repeal or simplify, Trump said.

The order says agencies should seek to repeal regulations that “inhibit job creation,” are “ineffective,” impose costs that exceed benefits or “create a serious inconsistency or otherwise interfere with regulatory initiatives and policies.”

Trump on Friday said the United States does not need “75 percent of the repetitive, horrible regulations that hurt companies, hurt jobs.”

The Republican has vowed a sweeping cut in U.S. regulations and previously ordered agencies to repeal two rules for every new one adopted.

Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon told a gathering of conservatives on Thursday that deregulation, which he called “the deconstruction of the administrative state,” was a top priority for the administration.

Scott Slesinger, legislative director at the Natural Resources Defense Council environmental group, said “this order is a directive to kill the safeguards Americans depend on for clean air, drinkable water and safe food.”

Obama regulations

The Trump administration says executive orders from the previous government cost hundreds of billions of dollars. The Obama administration said the benefits of those regulations to the public far outweighed the costs.

The White House said the Obama administration finalized more than 3,000 regulations. Many of those were required by Congress.

Robert Verchick, president of the Center for Progressive Reform, a think tank, criticized Trump’s new order as “clearly aimed at embedding his overtly political, anti-protections agenda at federal agencies that are supposed to be using science and expertise to safeguard us all.”

U.S. Chamber of Commerce senior vice president Neil Bradley praised the Trump administration for “tackling the regulatory state head on…. We look forward to working with the federal agencies to help identify rules that harm the economy and threaten jobs.”

The order Trump signed in January sets an annual cap on the cost of new regulations but does not apply to most financial reform rules introduced by the Obama administration.

The Trump administration also ordered a freeze on regulations pending review and has stopped some regulations from taking effect.
