Are you ready to cry? And if you’ve already seen Pixar’s heartwarming story of parental connection, are you ready to cry again? Bao, Pixar‘s acclaimed animated short that made history for being directed by the studio’s first female shorts director, is now available watch online — for one week only. So if you’re craving a good cry, or maybe just want to appreciate your parents more, watch Bao now.

Watch Bao Online

Though less than eight minutes long, Bao manages to be a tender, funny, and realistic depiction of mothers suffering from empty-nest syndrome. But most importantly, it gives a peek into the cultural divide between Asian parents and their American-born children.

Directed by Domee Shi, Bao follows a lonely empty-nester mom as she discovers one of her dumplings has come to life. Excited at her adorable creation, the mom eagerly raises the dumpling as her son, only for him to slowly distance himself from her before finally attempting to leave the house — until she eats him. The short was met with reactions of both confusion and praise, most of the confusion predictably coming from white audiences.

To be honest, I’ve forgotten much of Incredibles 2, but the Bao remains seared onto my mind. The simple and universal story of an aging mom who yearns for the same connection with her son that they shared when he was a child, is heartbreaking. Not to mention the depiction of a cultural division in the Asian-American diaspora — the son who wants to fit in, while the mom wants him to remember his roots.

Here’s the official synopsis for Bao:

In “Bao,” an aging Chinese mom suffering from empty nest syndrome gets another chance at motherhood when one of her dumplings springs to life as a lively, giggly dumpling boy. Mom excitedly welcomes this new bundle of joy into her life, but Dumpling starts growing up fast, and Mom must come to the bittersweet revelation that nothing stays cute and small forever. This short film from Pixar Animation Studios and director Domee Shi explores the ups and downs of the parent-child relationship through the colorful, rich, and tasty lens of the Chinese immigrant community in Canada.

Pixar released the short to celerate Bao being selected for the Best Animated Short shortlist at the 2019 Academy Awards. But beware: this short is only available online for one week only, until December 27, 2018. We won’t know until January 22, 2019 if Bao will make the final cut for Best Animated Short at next year’s Oscars, but considering how many tears were shed in response to this movie, I’d say they have a good chance.

  • “Icebox” is the feature debut for director Daniel Sawka and is based on his award-winning short film that looks at the US immigration policy from the perspective of a migrant young boy trying to get to the US.
  • The short film caught the attention of legendary director/producer James L. Brooks (“The Simpsons,” “Terms of Endearment”) who produced the feature version.
  • The lead of “Icebox” is Anthony Gonzalez, the star of the Disney hit “Coco.”

Though the Toronto International Film Festival is where the major studios and established players from the independent film world launch Oscar campaigns, the festival can still have a few surprises.

This year those include “Icebox,” one of this year’s TIFF world premieres that could find itself in the running for award season consideration with the big boys by year’s end thanks to a ripped-from-the-headlines story and the backing of one of the most powerful producers in Hollywood.

Incredibles 2 TRAILER: Disney Pixar’s superhero family returns (WATCH HERE) https://briefnews.eu/incredibles-2-trailer-disney-pixars-superhero-family-returns-watch-here/ https://briefnews.eu/incredibles-2-trailer-disney-pixars-superhero-family-returns-watch-here/#respond Fri, 13 Apr 2018 13:10:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/incredibles-2-trailer-disney-pixars-superhero-family-returns-watch-here/

The Disney Pixar film is the sequel to the 2000s original, one of Pixar’s most popular productions ever.

Incredibles 2 picks up exactly where the last one left off – and sees Holly Hunter’s Elastagirl taking centre stage while Mr Incredible has to stay at home.

The official synopsis reads: “In Incredibles 2, Helen (Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (Sarah Vowell), Dash (Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose superpowers are about to be discovered.

“Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything.

“But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.”

Incredibles 2 will also boast voices of Jonathan Banks, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Sophia Bush and John Ratzenburger – whose character The Underminer was seen at the very end of the first movie.

Released in 2004, The Incredibles grossed a hefty $ 633 million worldwide, and keeps a 97% overall score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Plans to make a sequel were first touted officially back in March 2014, and was originally slated for release in 2019 – after Toy Story 4.

However, delays to that title resulted in a swap – with this sequel now being launched this year instead. Toy Story 4 is now slated for June 21, 2019.

Incredibles 2 will be released in IMAX 3D as part of Disney’s new distribution deal, and looks highly likely to be one of the big family hits of the summer.

Incredibles 2 is out on July 13.

Pixar’s newest short film, Bao, looks so good that you could just eat it up. And you can now get a Bao first look, with the first images from the Pixar short that will air in front of Incredibles 2 dropping on the internet.

Leave it to Pixar to nail the complexities of family life in a seven-and-a-half-minute short film. Bao, directed by the first female Pixar short director Domee Shi, tells the adorable story about a Chinese-Canadian mom suffering from depression after her children leave her with an empty nest. But she magically gets a second chance at parenthood when one of her dumplings comes to life.

Entertainment Weekly has the first look at this “culinary fable” that is equal turns heartwarming and bittersweet. But most of all, it looks cute as hell.

Look at the adorable dumpling with its tiny blushes! Its big cheeks and little eyes! It’s the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, and I want 10 Funko Pops of them now, please Pixar.

Aesthetically, Bao looks like it takes cues from the winsome Japanese merchandise characters like Hello Kitty or Gudetama. But story-wise, Bao is rooted in the wistful reality of growing up and becoming distanced from your parents, Shi tells EW:

“It felt like a really universally appealing story that a lot of people could identify with. We got a ton of e-mails from people identifying with the mom character, or the dumpling character, saying, ‘Wait, that’s me,’ or ‘That’s my parents,’ or ‘I’m dealing with this right now.’”

The story follows the mom as she becomes more attached to the baby dumpling, who is at first loving and sweet. But even puberty hits anthropomorphic food items. Pixar sprinkles its signature meticulous touches onto the dumpling’s coming-of-age, using sesame seeds to signal puberty, and other details. Pixar shorts are often a sandbox for Pixar’s animators to experiment, and the team found that designing the food to be one of the most difficult experiences they faced. The team even brought on Shi’s mother, Ningsha Zhong as their “dumpling master” to oversee the accurate cutting and folding of animated dough. “Making our food look delicious was a big triumph,” producer Becky Neiman-Cobb said.

But why dumplings? While the classic dim sum dish is obviously tied to Chinese culture, Shi said that the choice of the baby dumpling has a deeper, more personal meaning than simply looking cute:

“Often times it felt like my mom would treat me like a precious little dumpling, wanting to make sure I was safe, that I didn’t go out late, all that stuff. I just wanted to create this magical, modern-day fairy tale, kind of like a Chinese Gingerbread Man story. The word ‘bao’ actually means two things in Chinese: Said one way, it means steamed bun. Said another, it means something precious. A treasure.”

Bao will appear before showings of Incredibles 2, which lands in theaters on June 15, 2018. It will make its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21, 2018.

Every movie has its early drafts, some of which never see the light of day. But the rise of concept art books and juicy “How Did This Get Made”-style oral histories have left nary a stone unturned in the vast movie development landscape.

Pixar boasts some of the most critically acclaimed and universally beloved animated films of the past 20 years, largely in part thanks to the animation studio’s meticulous attention to detail and story. Pixar films can take up to six years to get made, with films going through several drafts and concepts before they finally hit the big screen. Early versions of films like Toy Story or Finding Nemo may be virtually unrecognizable to us. But Pixar has opened its tight vault of undiscovered ideas to fans, and revealing some of its weirdest and most intriguing scrapped ideas for its films.

Pixar has released a video of some of its best scrapped ideas. Some of them we know (Inside Out‘s original slate of 20-plus emotions) and some of them we didn’t (Toy Story could have been called Toys in the Hood!) but either way, Pixar has just gifted us with a whole new collection of early concept art that we never knew we needed.

Pixar Scrapped Ideas

Here are some of the most fascinating scrapped concepts listed in the videos:

Inside Out: At one point, Riley had 27 different emotions with individual names. Sadness was named Misty, Anger was Ira, Fear was Freddie.

Toy Story 3: The opening originally had Woody riding into a dusty Old West town before Buzz showed up and the scene turned into a Hannah Montana-style concert. This was revealed to be Molly playing with Andy’s toys.

Up: Up was originally about two brothers who lived in a mythical floating city.

WALL-E: An early version featured “gelatinous blobs” that spoke gibberish. The idea was scrapped and the blobs became humans that lived on the Axiom that WALL-E discovers in space.

Ratatouille: Remy originally had a mother named Desiree, but she was scrapped after the focus turned to the father-son relationship.

Cars: The inspiration came from a Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer-style short story called “Yellow Car” about a little electric car who was disliked by everyone else in its small town because it was different. The only thing that stayed was the small-town setting and characters Fillmore and Sarge.

The Incredibles: Character designer Teddy Newton originally drew Edna Mode to be much taller, but Brad Bird loved a funny doodle he did where she was 3 feet tall so much that it became the final version.

Monsters Inc: Mike Wazowski design changes included springy hair, fire on his head, a purple design, a creepy elongated version and, most terrifying of all, a goatee.

A Bug’s Life: Heimlich was originally going to be voiced by a professional actor but temp voice Pixar animator Joe Ranft was so good that he was kept for the part.

Toy Story: Original title ideas included Hand-Me-Down Hero, The Cowboy and the Spaceman, Spurs & Rockets, Plastic Buddies, Don’t Move, and Toys in the Hood.

How a harsh criticism turned ‘Coco’ into Pixar’s most uniquely made movie yet https://briefnews.eu/how-a-harsh-criticism-turned-coco-into-pixars-most-uniquely-made-movie-yet/ https://briefnews.eu/how-a-harsh-criticism-turned-coco-into-pixars-most-uniquely-made-movie-yet/#respond Tue, 28 Nov 2017 06:34:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-a-harsh-criticism-turned-coco-into-pixars-most-uniquely-made-movie-yet/ Coco Disney PixarDisney/Pixar

  • “Coco” is the latest Pixar movie and is directed by Lee Unkrich (“Toy Story 3”).
  • The movie focuses on the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (“Day of the Dead”), and marks the first time Pixar has told a story around a cultural celebration.
  • Unkrich brought on cultural consultants to make sure the story was representing Mexican culture correctly. This is the first time a Pixar movie has welcomed in outsiders to a project still in production.
  • This came after the Latino community protested Disney for attempting to patent the phrase “Dia del los Muertos” for the movie.

Director Lee Unkrich was hot off the box office success and Oscar win for 2010’s “Toy Story 3” when he delved into making a movie that focused on the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. Seven years later, the project now known as “Coco” is finally ready for release (in theaters November 22), but the experience of making it was unlike any other Pixar movie before.

Under the watchful eye of Pixar/Walt Disney Animation head John Lasseter, Disney animation has been a powerhouse for over two decades. A big reason for that is the visionaries behind the scenes who are always looking for a challenge. For Unkrich, it was the Day of the Dead holiday that really fascinated him as an entry into telling a story.

“It wasn’t until I started to learn about the tradition, and what it was truly all about, and its history, that I started to really see the potential of telling a story that could be very adventurous and visually dazzling, full of music and color, but could also have a real emotional resonance,” Unkrich told Business Insider. “And that’s what we’re all really looking for ultimately in the stories that we tell. We don’t want to just tell a story that’s gimmicky and clever.”

It would be new terrain for Pixar: the first time it would tell a story around a cultural celebration. But Lasseter was game. He gave Unkrich the okay and the filmmaker got started in September of 2011.

The story follows a young boy named Miguel who secretly wants to be a famous musician, though his family has forbidden music after his great-great-grandfather left the family to seek out fame as a musician. While celebrating Day of the Dead, Miguel magically ends up in the Land of the Dead, and must go on a journey to find his way back to the living while also searching for his great-great-grandfather.

Coco 3 Disney PixarDisney/Pixar“Many of us have lost loved ones and have spend time thinking about them and wanting to keep their memories alive, so we felt even though this was a culturally specific setting for our story that it was going to be full of ideas that people all over the world could relate to,” Unkrich said.

But finding the right tone for the culture it was spotlighting turned out to be the project’s biggest challenge. At first, to stay clear of stereotypes and making sure to be culturally respectful, Unkrich said he used many Pixar artists and employees who are Mexican or Mexican-American as a sounding board. However, a major roadblock hit the production in 2013 when Disney filed an application to patent Dia de los Muertos for the release of the movie. The Latino community went into an uproar on social media and a petition to stop Disney went up on Change.org and received over 21,000 signatures. The company quickly withdrew the application.

Unkrich admits making “Coco” has been a learning process from the start, but he said they really hit their stride when they put together a group of cultural consultants. Made up of people like Lalo Alcaraz — author of the nationally syndicated comic “La Cucaracha,” who was one of the most vocal opponents of the patent — and Latino playwright Octavio Solis, the group would meet with Unkrich, codirector Adrian Molina, and their team every few months and look at the development of the project. It was the first time on any Pixar movie that outsiders were allowed into the studio’s creative process. And getting the feedback of outsiders didn’t stop there.

“We ended up bringing in periodically big groups of all sorts of folks from the Latino community, from artists to writers to political figures to media executives, because we wanted to get a lot of different perspectives,” Unkrich said. “What we quickly learned is there is no one right way to tell a story set in the Latino community, there are a lot of different opinions. Part of our challenge was trying to navigate all those different opinions to figure out our path forward.”

These meetings with the consultants and Latino community didn’t lead to any major changes to the story, Unkrich said, however they were responsible for many small tweaks that increased the movie’s connection to Mexican culture.

One example is a change in how the character of Miguel’s grandmother, Abuelita, disciplines people.

Coco 2 Disney PixarDisney/Pixar“In her earlier conception we gave her a wooden spoon that was tucked into her apron string and she would whip that out and kind of hit you to express displeasure,” Unkrich said. “It was at one of our earlier screenings that a couple of our cultural consultants said, ‘A spoon has nothing to do with Latino culture, she should really pull off her chancla, her slipper, and hit them with it.’ And that was the first time we learned about la chancla, and we embraced the idea fully. That one adjustment has proven to win us a lot of points in the Latino community because it’s something a lot of people grew up fearing.”

Then there were the factors surrounding the movie that were beyond Unkrich and Pixar’s control, like how immigration suddenly became a hot-button topic after the election of Donald Trump as president. Unkrich said he and his crew were in Mexico on election night, recording music by local musicians for the movie. He said the news of the Trump win didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits, but he does recognize the current climate about immigration and race, and how it’s changed substantially since back when they began working on “Coco.”

“I feel like this has been a confusing time for many people, and there’s lots of negativity in the air, and we just hope that with this film we are bringing some needed positivity,” he said.

Unkrich doesn’t know if “Coco” can be a unifier, but he does believe that telling stories like this is important.

“I think a lot of great change in history has come from stories and storytelling, there’s a power to it,” he said. “The one thing that everyone knows for sure these days is that we’re living in super unpredictable times. All I can really say is that I firmly believe that by bringing this movie out we’re trying to be part of the solution rather than trying to be part of the problem.”

  • Disney/Pixar dominated the Thanksgiving holiday weekend at the multiplex once again.
  • “Pixar” won the long holiday weekend with an estimated $ 72 million.
  • The animated movie knocked off “Justice League,” which took in $ 60 million to come in second place.

Pixar and Disney Animated Studios have dominated the Thanksgiving holiday weekend over the past handful of years, giving us titles like “Frozen,” “Moana,” “The Good Dinosaur,” and “Tangled.” Now you can add Pixar’s latest “Coco” to that list.

The emotional look at a boy’s journey to the Land of the Dead to better understand his family and celebrate his relatives who have passed away took in a solid $ 49 million over the weekend and $ 72 million total over the five-day holiday weekend domestically, according to Exhibitor Relations.

To put that in perspective with the Disney/Pixar Thanksgiving domestic releases of the past, that opening is better than “The Good Dinosaur” ($ 39.1 million three-day / $ 55.4 million five-day) and “Tangled” ($ 48.7 million / $ 68.7 million) but didn’t perform as well as “Moana” ($ 56.6 million / $ 82 million), “Frozen” ($ 67.4 million / $ 93.9 million), or “Toy Story 2” ($ 57.4 million / $ 80.5 million).

“Coco” took in $ 8.9 million on Thanksgiving day with an audience that was 39% Hispanic over the weekend — a strong number that Disney/Pixar was striving for.

Warner Bros.’s “Justice League” dropped down to second place with $ 60 million over the five days. The $ 300 million-budgeted superhero blockbuster now has a weak domestic total of $ 171 million.

“Wonder” continued its surprising run for Lionsgate by taking in $ 32 million over five days to win third place.

But audiences didn’t show up for Denzel Washington’s latest, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.,” as the Sony drama only earned $ 6 million over the five days on over 1,600 screens.

Like Pixar’s greatest films, such as Toy Story, Up, and Inside Out, the Thanksgiving weekend treat Coco is a gorgeously rendered fantasy about the good and bad (but mostly good) of family life. Set in small-town Mexico on Día de Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, it’s both a color-saturated homage to this ancient Mexican tradition and a loving portrait of a family learning to accept the perspective of a new generation.

The story revolves around 12-year-old Miguel, who spends every day after school helping with the family shoe-making business. There’s just one problem in Miguel’s life. All he really wants to do is become a mariachi, singing and playing guitar like the 1940s musical star Ernesto de la Cruz. But his family hates music, going all the way back to his great-great-grandmother Imelda. She founded the family shoe business to support her daughter after her husband abandoned them to become a musician. When Miguel’s abuelita—Imelda’s granddaughter—discovers Miguel’s guitar, she smashes it. Miguel can’t take it anymore, and he flees home in tears.

Racing through the streets just as Día de Muertos celebrations are just getting started, Miguel makes a few iffy choices and winds up transported to the Land of the Dead. Followed by his adorable street dog friend Dante over a bridge made of orange flower petals, Miguel finds himself in a glowing, multi-layered city of gondolas and neon rainbow-furred flying animals. Ghosts who look exactly like Día de Muertos skeletons are everywhere, their bony faces vivid and emotionally expressive. There are a lot of satirical touches, too, like when the dead line up at Disneyland-like gates to get in and out of the Land of the Dead. It’s a sumptuous and funny visual sequence that will fill even a cynic’s heart with wonder.

The Day of the Dead is nearly upon us, but before the festivities can start, we need to know more about Coco. The new Pixar film that follows a young Mexican boy named Miguel who accidentally finds himself stuck in the Land of the Dead, Coco is as much a love letter to the Mexico as it is to the holiday that the entire country celebrates in October.

Coco will be released a little after the actual Day of the Dead, which takes place from October 31 through November 2, but Pixar has dropped some charming clips and featurettes to get us in the festive mood.

Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez) loves music with every fibre of his being. But thanks to a past trauma that his great-great-grandmother underwent thanks to music, his entire family has banned music from their premises, even as the joyous tunes of the mariachi band float into their shoe-making shop.

That doesn’t stop Miguel from running around the town square, absorbing as much of the musical atmosphere as he can, and learning the ropes from the local mariachi musician whose shoes he shines. But just as he’s about to grasp his dreams, his concerned but domineering Abuelita interrupts in the new Coco clip.

Watch the Coco Clip

Grandmother knows best, even if it crushes aspiring musician Miguel’s dreams.

Meanwhile, the featurette dives into much of what I covered in my set visit of Coco earlier this year. Featuring footage of the animators and directors visiting big cities and small towns throughout Mexico in their research trips over the course of five years, directors Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina emphasize the importance of how the movie is “rooted in actual places.”

“Those early research trips inspired not only the look, but they inspired the story,” Unkrich continued. “And the importance of family.”

But the story was just as much about music as it was about family, Unkrich said, so he and Molina tasked orchestrator Germaine Franco and consultant Camilo Lara with capturing the sounds of Mexico — which they did by recording and hiring tons of local musicians out of Mexico City. The music, the vibrant colors, and the quirky characters all seem to have been created with love and care — to the awe of the actors, including newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, who resorts to high-pitched squealing over the finished film in his interview.

“It’s a dream come true to be able put my own family’s experiences into a film that’s as special as Coco. And I’m so excited to share this film with the world,” Molina said.

Here’s the synopsis of Coco:

Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel’s family history.

The cast of Coco includes Gael García Bernal, Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Renée Victor, Ana Ofelia Murguía, Jaime Camil, Sofía Espinosa, Luis Valdez, Lombardo Boyar, Edward James Olmos, Alanna Ubach, Selene Luna, Alfonso Arau, Herbert Siguenza, Octavio Solis, Gabriel Iglesias, Cheech Marin, Blanca Araceli. The film is directed by Lee Unkrich (Toy Story 3) with co-director Adrian Molina.

Coco is set to open in theaters on November 22, 2017.
