  • UFC 279 will stream live on September 10, with the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
  • Nate Diaz will fight Tony Ferguson in the main event after Khamzat Chimaev failed to make weight.
  • The main card is a pay-per-view fight that costs $ 75 in addition to an ESPN+ subscription ($ 10/month).

In an unprecedented move, UFC has shuffled the matchups for the main event of UFC 279 less than 24 hours before the fight, with the headlining fighters now preparing to face entirely different opponents.

Khamzat Chimaev is one of UFC's up-and-coming welterweight stars, but he weighed in at more than 7 lbs over the division's limit one day before his scheduled match with UFC veteran Nate Diaz. Diaz reportedly refused to face Chimaev in a catchweight match, leading UFC to renegotiate the scheduled fights on the main card.

After shuffling some matchups around, Chimaev will now face Kevin Holland, while Diaz will fight Tony Ferguson, and Li Jingliang will take on Daniel Rodriguez. Chimaev versus Holland and Diaz versus Ferguson are both scheduled for five rounds. Jingliang versus Rodriguez will proceed as a three-round fight.

Chimaev is undefeated through 11 matches, with 10 victories coming by knockout or submission. Diaz was once one of UFC's biggest welterweight stars, handing Conor McGregor his first UFC defeat in 2016 before losing by decision in a rematch. However, Diaz has only fought three times over the last five years, including back-to-back losses to Jorge Masvidal and current champion Leon Edwards.

How to watch UFC 279

Arrowverse's 'Elseworlds' Crossover: New Promo Pits Supergirl vs. Alex https://briefnews.eu/arrowverses-elseworlds-crossover-new-promo-pits-supergirl-vs-alex/ https://briefnews.eu/arrowverses-elseworlds-crossover-new-promo-pits-supergirl-vs-alex/#respond Mon, 19 Nov 2018 13:20:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arrowverses-elseworlds-crossover-new-promo-pits-supergirl-vs-alex/

At this point, it’s hard to imagine anything coming between Kara and Alex Danvers. Then again, we never thought we’d see Oliver Queen kissing Iris West-Allen — yet here we are.

A new teaser for the Arrowverse’s upcoming “Elseworlds” crossover aired during Sunday’s episode of Supergirl, in which the Girl of Steel finds herself taken prisoner by her own sister. “You are as despicable as they come,” a newly braided Alex tells Kara from the other side of the glass. “You are dangerous, and you are clearly crazy.”

“Alex, I know the world looks one way to you, but we’re sisters,” Kara insists — though it doesn’t look like Alex is interested in hearing any of her prisoner’s perceived lies.

This year’s Arrowverse crossover event will air Sunday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Dec. 11, comprised of the ninth episodes of The Flash (airing on a special night), Arrow and Supergirl (airing on a special night). Guest stars include Ruby Rose (Orange Is the New Black) as Batwoman/Kate Kane, Tyler Hoechlin (reprising his role as Supergirl‘s Superman/Clark Kent), Elizabeth Tulloch (Grimm) as Lois Lane, Jeremy Davies (Lost) as Arkham Asylum doc John Deegan), LaMonica Garrett (Designated Survivor) as Mar Novu aka The Monitor and Cassandra Jean Amell as Mr. Freeze’s wife, Nora.

The Simpsons Pits Futurama Ship Against The Orville in 'Treehouse of Horror XXIX' — Watch Sneak Peek https://briefnews.eu/the-simpsons-pits-futurama-ship-against-the-orville-in-treehouse-of-horror-xxix-watch-sneak-peek/ https://briefnews.eu/the-simpsons-pits-futurama-ship-against-the-orville-in-treehouse-of-horror-xxix-watch-sneak-peek/#respond Fri, 19 Oct 2018 15:00:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-simpsons-pits-futurama-ship-against-the-orville-in-treehouse-of-horror-xxix-watch-sneak-peek/

The residents of Springfield are overtaken by evil alien body snatchers in Sunday’s “Treehouse of Horror XXIX” episode of The Simpsons (Fox, 8/7c), but we’re here to discuss a far more dire confrontation. As you’ll see in TVLine’s exclusive clip from the episode, this particular segment features two very familiar space ships — Futurama‘s Planet Express and The Orville‘s titular vessel — and their meeting isn’t exactly a friendly one.

Planet Express is the first to appear, proudly displaying a banner that reads “Bring Back Futurama,” a sentiment I think we can all appreciate. Well, all of us except the crew aboard The Orville, who decide to… actually, I won’t ruin the ending for you.

For those who don’t speak fluent Fox, here’s some background: Futurama was an animated series from Simpsons creator Matt Groening that ran from 1999 to 2003 on Fox, then enjoyed a second life on Comedy Central from 2008 to 2013. And The Orville, a live-action sci-fi comedy from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, will return to Fox for its second season in 2019.

Elsewhere in this year’s Simpsons Halloween episode, Homer challenges Cthulhu to an oyster-eating contest, Lisa “finally snaps” and Mr. Burns builds a retirement home with a Jurassic twist.

One of the greatest friendly rivalries in the history of television is undoubtedly that of Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) and Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson), two of the top salespeople from the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company followed closely in the mockumentary series The Office. However, that rivalry is about to be taken to a new level.

Tom Clancy’s Jim Ryan is a new series that we wish was real on Amazon where the titular analyst must go undercover as a paper salesman is forced to deal with a top security threat in the form of another salesman at the company. Mixing footage from Amazon’s Jack Ryan series with The Office makes for a trailer mash-up that is better than it has any right to be. Watch below!

The Office Jack Ryan Trailer Mash-Up

Funny or Die‘s The Office Jack Ryan trailer mash-up masterfully uses the pranks between Jim and Dwight and makes them a little more sinister when the two are imagined to be spies caught up in dangerous espionage. The use of Dwight’s surprising number of times using a weapon and his various disguises to portray people from the office make him a deadly threat. Meanwhile, Jim Ryan is just an unsuspecting paper salesman caught up in it all, and he might just be in over his head.

It’s actually rather impressive how scenes like Dwight’s family farm funeral mixes with an outdoor party that Jack Ryan must be whisked away from. Plus, the juxtaposition of the epic snowball war that gets out of hand with the snowy locations used for Jack Ryan is just perfect. Surely the real Jack Ryan series won’t have this kind of entertainment, but now that it’s available on Amazon, you can find out for yourself.

US interests first: Pompeo pits EU against Russia as Bolton arranges Trump-Putin summit https://briefnews.eu/us-interests-first-pompeo-pits-eu-against-russia-as-bolton-arranges-trump-putin-summit/ https://briefnews.eu/us-interests-first-pompeo-pits-eu-against-russia-as-bolton-arranges-trump-putin-summit/#respond Wed, 27 Jun 2018 23:58:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-interests-first-pompeo-pits-eu-against-russia-as-bolton-arranges-trump-putin-summit/ Washington will continue to pressure its European allies to sever economic ties with Moscow, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, even as John Bolton was arranging the Trump-Putin summit “in pursuit of US national interests.”

“We are actively engaged in an all-of-US-government approach in convincing European governments and European businesses alike that increased energy dependence on Russia is inconsistent with what it is we’re all trying to do in pushing back against Russia,” Pompeo told the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday, at a hearing about the 2019 State Department budget.

His remarks came as the White House national security adviser John Bolton was arranging the summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will reportedly take place mid-July somewhere in Europe. Bolton brushed off questions of possible criticism in the US by saying that Trump’s foreign policy was guided by pursuit of “American national interests.”

For all of Trump’s talk of “getting along better” with Russia and Bolton’s diplomacy in Moscow, the Trump administration is continuing to implement policies hostile to Russia it inherited from Barack Obama’s term in the White House. Trump has ordered the closure of two Russian consulates and expelled over 60 Russian diplomats in March, based on nothing more than the word of the British government that Russia had “poisoned” a former double agent and his daughter with a chemical agent in Salisbury.

“Nord Stream 2 is one of several examples that we have made clear we think goes in completely the wrong direction, in terms of allowing the Russians to have the capacity to exert political influence – not only in Germany, but all around Europe,” Pompeo said.

Pompeo also told the senators the State Department was “continuing to engage” with European Union members – and Italy in particular – to convince them that maintaining trade sanctions against Russia “is important to achieving outcomes that are in the best interests of Europe.” The new Italian government has voiced opposition to continued hostility towards Moscow.

The EU has suffered considerable economic losses due to the US-led push to block trade with Russia since 2014. By contrast, the US has been largely unaffected, and has even profited somewhat from the sale of pricey liquid natural gas (LNG) that Washington has promoted as the alternative to cheaper Russian fuel.

Germany has resisted US pressure to block Nord Stream 2, due to be completed in 2019, which is the expansion of the Nord Stream pipeline opened in 2011. The expanded pipeline would also ensure a reliable supply of Russian gas to central and western Europe, eliminating the ability of the US-backed government in Ukraine to interfere with the flow. A number of American lawmakers have argued that keeping Ukraine’s hand on the gas valve is a vital US national interest.

Once Upon a Time Series Finale Promo Pits Returning Heroes vs. Final Threat https://briefnews.eu/once-upon-a-time-series-finale-promo-pits-returning-heroes-vs-final-threat/ https://briefnews.eu/once-upon-a-time-series-finale-promo-pits-returning-heroes-vs-final-threat/#respond Sat, 05 May 2018 09:42:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/once-upon-a-time-series-finale-promo-pits-returning-heroes-vs-final-threat/

The following contains spoilers from this week’s Once Upon a Time.

This week on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, the vanquishing of one threat was celebrated, while unbeknownst to almost everyone, a new foe had emerged — setting the stage for the two-night, series-ending battle (airing Fridays, May 11 and 18).

When Henry and Jacinda’s “first” kiss didn’t undo the new curse, Gothel suggested to Regina that the lad’s belief simply wasn’t what it once was. Regina thought that Henry touching the storybook would make the difference, but nope, it didn’t. Instead, the True Love’s Kiss that was needed was between son and mother, when Henry — awoken by hearing on the phone his younger self, who’s currently a high school grad still in Storybrooke (?!) — rushed to Regina’s side after she got KO’d during a clash with Gothel.

The sweet kiss planted on Mom’s forehead triggered the pulse that woke everyone else, including Rogers/Wish Hook, Tilly/Alice, Margot/Robin, Jacinda/Ella and Tiana/Sabine. Hook, Rumple, Alice and Margot then arrived on the scene, where Alice used the support of her loved ones to spark magic that she unleashed on her mother, turning her into a tree.

As the others celebrated the big win (or, if Alice, watched heart-poisoned Dad get tended to by EMTs), Rumple sought out his photo album, only to find it missing. He then confronted Facilier, who mocked lovelorn Rumple… before getting slayed by behind, by a familiar imp. “You didn’t think a Wish Realm could hold me, did you, dearie?” bleated Wish Rumple to his other self.

Watch the promo for the two-part finale above, which features many returns — Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Ginny Goodwin and Emilie de Ravin included — as the heroes face this final crisis.

Roguelike Shooter IDracula: Genesis Pits Your High-Tech Weaponry Against The Forces Of Evil https://briefnews.eu/roguelike-shooter-idracula-genesis-pits-your-high-tech-weaponry-against-the-forces-of-evil/ https://briefnews.eu/roguelike-shooter-idracula-genesis-pits-your-high-tech-weaponry-against-the-forces-of-evil/#respond Tue, 27 Mar 2018 06:30:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roguelike-shooter-idracula-genesis-pits-your-high-tech-weaponry-against-the-forces-of-evil/ idracula_screenshot_06.png
In the post apocalypse of iDracula: Genesis, it’s not roaming bandits, devastating disease, or the undead you have to worry about. Actually, those might be preferable when the world is a hellscape where the laws of physics have been torn asunder and demons, killer machines, and other monsters lurk around every corner. Thankfully in this isometric dual-stick shooter, you have more than enough firepower to annihilate them all.

As a hunter, you fight these nightmarishly weird foes across procedurally generated arenas, armed with a plethora of weapons, items, and skill-changing perks. With the right upgrades, you can turn a standard blaster into a powerful charged energy weapon outfitted with an aim-improved laser, and iDracula offers myriad more weapons to equip and customize, from handheld mortars to plasma machine guns.

After choosing from a selection of hunters as weird as your enemies, iDracula also features useful companions (aka “familiars”) that imbue you with additional passive abilities, adding even more builds to devise. Once you’re on the battlefield, ranging from fleshy caverns to mad scientist labs and gothic halls, the pixel art action looks particularly impressive, with its detailed and over-the-top effects and hordes of varied monsters.

iDracula: Genesis is in development for PC, and you can follow its development through the game’s blog and Twitter page.

Tillerson pits Beijing’s ‘predatory’ Africa expansion against Washington’s ‘responsible’ support https://briefnews.eu/tillerson-pits-beijings-predatory-africa-expansion-against-washingtons-responsible-support/ https://briefnews.eu/tillerson-pits-beijings-predatory-africa-expansion-against-washingtons-responsible-support/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 03:46:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tillerson-pits-beijings-predatory-africa-expansion-against-washingtons-responsible-support/ China’s rapidly growing influence on the African continent is worrying the US Secretary of State. He claims that its investments are detrimental, unlike Washington’s “responsible” promotion of the “rule of law.”

The Chinese approach to relations with the African countries “encourages dependency” through the use of “opaque contracts, predatory loan practices, and corrupt deals that mire [the African] nations in debt and undercut their sovereignty,” Rex Tillerson stated in his speech at the George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia, on Tuesday, ahead of his official trip to Africa. He claimed that China’s approach “stands in stark contrast” to the good intentions of the US.

Even though the top US diplomat admitted that “Chinese investment does have the potential to address Africa’s infrastructure gap,” he still argued that it eventually would only lead to “mounting debt” for the African nations and would create only “few, if any, jobs in most countries.” He also claimed that China “endangers Africa’s natural resources and its long-term economic political stability.”

The US approach, on the contrary, “develops sustainable growth that bolsters institutions [and] strengthens rule of law,” Tillerson claimed. He went on to encourage China to join the US in “responsible” development efforts based on “transparent market practices,” thus effectively urging it to switch to a model of relations with the African countries that has been developed and championed by the West.

While attacking Beijing over its growing interests in Africa, the US Secretary of State grabbed the opportunity to boast about Washington allocating $ 533 million in “additional humanitarian assistance to fight famine and food insecurity” in such countries as Somalia, South Sudan and Ethiopia, as well as in the region of the Lake Chad basin. “The US is the largest provider of humanitarian assistance,” Tillerson stated.

The US might indeed still be the largest aid donor in Africa as well as the largest investor. However, Beijing is rapidly catching up with Washington in many other areas of relations with African nations, and even surpasses it when it comes to trade or job creation. Such a situation pits the two powers against each other in what seems to be a contest for influence on the continent.

Booming trade has made China Africa’s biggest trade partner in less than two decades. In 2000, trade volume between China and the African nations accounted for mere $ 10 billion. It grew by a factor of 20 in 15 years and reached its peak of over $ 200bn in 2015, according to the IMF. Even though China’s trade volume with the African countries has shrunk since that time by roughly a quarter, it still far outshines that of the US, which has been almost steadily decreasing since 2012, and amounted to less than $ 50bn by 2017.

China has also become the largest jobs creator on the continent, according to a 2017 report issued by the Ernst & Young multinational professional services firm. The same report also said that Beijing’s foreign direct investment (FDI) increased by 106 percent over 2016, making it the third largest investor in Africa. Since 2005, China has invested in 293 FDI projects in Africa and created more than 130,000 jobs.

Beijing does not just invest in Africa, it also actively funds major infrastructure projects on the continent, thus winning the hearts of the local population. China has “aided or financed the building of over 5,000km of railway and roads, built more than 200 schools and nearly 100 hospitals, and trained more than 160,000 professional workers in Africa,” the Chinese ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, wrote in an article for the Telegraph in December 2017.

What could also be worrying for the US is that Beijing does not only engage in Africa economically but also actively promotes its own culture, language and governance experience among the African nations.

Beijing has opened over 40 language and culture centers in Africa. It also managed to drastically increase the number of African students studying in China in recent years. In 2003, their number amounted to just 2,000 while, in 2015, it reached almost 50,000. According to Quartz, China effectively became the most popular destination for Anglophone African students studying abroad, surpassing the US and the UK.

Apart from that, China also started playing an increasing role in educating African elites. Between 2011 and 2015, some 200 African politicians went to China for training. In 2016, Beijing said it would invite as many as 1,000. Such a complex policy has already yielded some results.

The Chinese economic model of development was becoming increasingly popular among the African nations, according to the 2016 Afrobarometer survey. The poll, conducted among 56,000 people from 36 African countries, showed that the Chinese model was considered to be roughly as good as the US one by Southern African and Northern African nations. People living in Central Africa saw it as even more preferable.
