Boiler and central heating issues are common during cold weather, however, you could save yourself from frozen pipes with a quick trick. An expert has advised that taking just 30 seconds tonight to do this simple hack, which anyone can do, will significantly lower your risk of frozen pipes. It involves tending to plumbing pipes which are placed behind closed doors, such as in kitchen cabinets, as these are most vulnerable to freezing. Simply opening up the closed doors separating your pipes from the rest of your home can help you to prevent frozen pipes, an expert from AS Plumbing and Gas told Express.co.uk. “Being behind closed doors, kitchen plumbing frozen pipes are vulnerable, as the heat from the rest of the house can’t reach them,” said the expert. He advised a simple solution to protect these particular pipes: “Open the cabinet doors to allow heat to circulate into the cabinets.” If your home is particularly chilly, a strategically placed fan or heater may also be able to help. “A fan or portable heater pointed inside the cabinet helps circulate warm air,” the expert explained. Frozen pipes occur when the temperatures outside drop to below zero degrees Celsius, meaning the water in your pipes become frozen too. The water then expands within the pipe as it freezes, putting you at risk of burst or leaking pipes – and a sky high plumber bill to boot. Frozen pipes are naturally more likely when the weather outside is particularly cold, for instance during this weekend’s snow forecast. Is it cheaper to leave your central heating on all the time or turn it on and off? The issue is a popular debate. Some believe it is better to control your thermostat by turning it up and down during the day, or putting it on a timer. But what do the experts think about this issue? Sadly for some, Caitlin Bent – an energy expert at the Energy Saving Trust (EST), isn’t buying the “keep it on” philosophy. “It’s a common myth that leaving the heating on low all day will help you save energy,” she told The Sun. ”In reality, it’s best to use a timer or programmer to make sure your home is only heated when you’re there. Boiler and central heating systems can often play up in cold weather, and this is due to the effect the falling temperature has on your pipes. However, you can easily prevent problems before they even happen with a simple, cheap heating solution: pipe lagging. Pipe lagging is a type of insulation which can be purchased for as little as £5.10 for a roll, with prices increasing for larger quantities. The useful video above explains how you might be able to apply this lagging to your pipes yourself, without the need to call out an expert. Pipes in the loft, in garages or on the outside of the home are the most necessary to apply lagging to. Pipes in an airing cupboard, or under sinks should also be fitted with lagging to avoid future damage. Lengths should be cut at an angle in order to join up together at the joints of the pipes, ensuring there is no gap for cold air to get in. Once fixed around the pipes, lagging can be fixed with tape to ensure it stays in place and does its job properly. Pipe insulation has a number of benefits. For a start, it can prevent heat loss from pipes and therefore make your heating more efficient, reducing the cost you pay overall. Furthermore, protecting your pipes with lagging could end up preventing your pipes from freezing and getting damaged – which would cost you a hefty sum to fix. Lastly, a lesser known benefit of installing lagging around your pipes is for noise reduction from your central heating system. Hot water can make a banging noise when it passes through a pipe, due to the temperature difference between the inner and outer tubes. Is it cheaper to leave central heating on all the time or to turn it on and off? The matter is a popular debate. As temperatures drop, many of us are considering the best way to keep our homes warm. Cold weather, such as the current UK weather climate, can affect your central heating, causing the problem of frozen pipes. Frozen pipes, such as a frozen condensate pipe, can prevent your boiler from working, which means you will have to pay a hefty cost. In fact, it is said to be one of the most common reasons for plumbers to be called out to homes. You will also be left with a freezing cold home because your boiler is not working property to heat it. Frozen pipes are usually indicated by your boiler making a banging noise, or another unusual sound. However, there is a central heating trick you can use to prevent the problem from happening in the first place, despite freezing outside temperatures. The trick involves setting your thermostat at a minimum value recommended by property experts. Your central heating thermostat should be set to at least 10 degrees Celsius, according to Halifax home insurance. This is especially important if you are leaving your home unoccupied for a long time, for instance when you go on holiday. Setting the thermostat to this minimum temperature before you go away can prevent unwanted issues while you are away. Frozen pipes can cause serious damage if they burst, flooding your whole home. Repair work may involve digging up the area around your home, incurring huge costs. Locating your stopcock for frozen pipes is extremely important, as this allows you to act quickly if you have water coming through the ceiling. Steve Watson, a Serving and Maintenance Manager at STL Heating & Energy, explained where to find the stopcock, which is a valve for turning on and off the water supply. “Many people have no idea where their stop cock is – but finding it is often crucial in minimising damage from frozen water pipes,” he said. Would you know where to find yours? They are usually in the kitchen near the sink, or in your garage.
Why do pipes freeze?

When the parents of Sally Le Page, a British evolutionary biologist, tried to get help from their local water company with installing a new pipe, they were greeted with a bizarre sight.
“My parents couldn’t believe their eyes,” Le Page wrote in a blog post, “when they saw the man from [the company] Severn Trent slowly walking around holding two ‘bent tent pegs’ to locate the pipe.”
The technician was attempting to use divining rods — a discredited medieval witchcraft technique that was once believed to able to locate water. (The rods allegedly cross when they’re above water.)
And it wasn’t a one-off.
Ten out of twelve British water firms still use “water dowsing,” despite no reputable scientific evidence that it works.
Le Page tweeted at the “all ten major water companies in England and Wales, plus the government-run agencies in Scotland and Northern Ireland,” and asked them whether their technicians ever use divination or dowsing rods.
Of the 12, 10 said yes.
“I believe sometimes they do,” Northumbrian Water, one of the 10 private companies asked, said in response, “our field services manager tells me he’s seen them used successfully before.”
“We do have some techs that still have them in the van and use them if they need to,” said Severn Trent.
“There have been occasions where we’ve used dowsing rods,” Anglian Water added.

Hi @domneill, although few and far between, some of our techs still use them! But they are only used to detect pipework and voids that may be caused by bursts or collapses! pic.twitter.com/UueOG3zj9U

I’ve just asked our technical customer services staff and they advise me, yes we do use them sometimes. Please give them a call on 0330 303 0368 if you would like more details. Kind regards Jane
Of the 12, only Wessex Water and Northern Ireland Water said they did not use the ineffective techniques. (Welsh Water said it did, only to later delete its tweet.)
(You can see all the responses on Sally Page’s blog.)
So if divining rods don’t work, why do people think they do? It’s down to something called the ideomotor effect. It’s when you subconsciously move something without realizing it — the same way an Ouija board seems able to answer superstitious users’ questions. It’s you doing it, even if you don’t realize it.
As the United States Geological Survey said, “Case histories and demonstrations of dowsers may seem convincing, but when dowsing is exposed to scientific examination, it presents a very different picture.”
“You could just laugh this off. Isn’t it a bit silly that big companies are still using magic to do their jobs! Except if they get it wrong, that could mean the difference between an entire town having safe drinking water or not,” Le Page wrote.
She continued:
“If they use divining rods to decide that there isn’t a pipe underneath and so it’s safe to dig there, they could rupture the mains water supply for thousands of people. Not to mention the cost of sending out a ‘trained’ technician to examine a site for several hours, only to get no valuable information. Money that comes from the UK homeowners who have no choice over which water company to use.”
“Maybe it’s time to leave the magic and divination to Harry Potter,” Le Page added.

Police in Indonesia have smashed a smuggling ring for allegedly stuffing 125 exotic birds into drain pipes. The arrests are part of a wider clampdown on the lucrative illegal trade in the animals.
Four men were arrested following the discovery of 41 endangered white cockatoos and 84 eclectus parrots, which had been stuffed into plastic piping. The piping had been cut and sealed at the ends with wire, AFP reports.
The four alleged smugglers were arrested in four different locations in the eastern part of the island nation. They now face a maximum of five years in prison and a fine of 100 million rupiah ($ 7,400) if found guilty.
Indonesia is currently trying to rein in the illegal trading of birds. The country’s vast jungles are home to 131 threatened bird species, bested only by Brazil. There is a large market for illegal avian trading in Indonesia. The birds are being sold in large cities inside the country or shipped off abroad, where they are sold as pets.
Dwi Adhiasto, of the Wildlife Conservation Society, told AFP the avian haul may have been destined for the neighboring Philippines, which apparently has its own “parrot smuggling network.”

White cockatoos are native to Indonesia and are listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Their estimated population, of between 43,000 and 183,000, is under threat due to the actions of poachers such as those arrested, coupled with the loss of their habitat.

The shipment of industrial aid that is currently being readied for dispatch will consist of “more than 40 units of construction equipment,” such as bulldozers, excavators and cranes, Russia’s Defense Ministry said. In addition, the country will receive “over 2 thousand tons of metal pipes” that would be used to restore water infrastructure as well as “hundreds of kilometers of high-voltage and fiber-optic cables” to restore electricity and communications lines.
The construction material, which will be shipped from the port of Novorossiysk, will be used to restore “critical infrastructure” to those areas that have been recently freed from terrorist fighters, the Defense Ministry said, adding that hospitals and schools remain the priority.
The announcement of Russia’s industrial aid support followed the meeting between Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu and Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus Tuesday. With roughly 85 percent of Syrian territory cleared from terrorist fighters with the help of the Russian air force, Shoigu and Assad discussed military cooperation and joint actions against jihadists.
Just before flying off to Damascus, Shoigu sent a letter to the UN envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura, urging the UN to speed up humanitarian efforts as people across Syria are in dire need more than 1,000 tons of food and also over 80 tons of medicine.
Moscow and Damascus, along with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) have recently been focusing on delivering aid to the former besieged residents of Deir ez-Zor, who are now recovering from three years of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) tyranny. In addition to food, medicine, and other supplies, Russia has also sent a team of sappers to demine the provincial capital which was liberated from the jihadist encirclement last week.
“Upon the directives of President Bashar al-Assad, tens of trucks, loaded with food, medical, educational, petroleum and basic materials were sent to be distributed to the families who have resisted the terrorist organizations,” the Governor of Deir Ez-zor Mohammad Ibrahim Samrah told Sana Tuesday.
With most of the territory in Syria under Damascus’ control, crushing the remaining pockets of terrorist resistance is just a matter of time. As Syrian forces continue to liberate the remaining 15 percent or roughly 27,000 square kilometers that is still controlled by the terrorists, reconstruction of the country will soon be the priority of President Assad.
After six years conflict, substantial resources is required to rebuild Syria. The World Bank estimates that apart from the human capital lost in the war, the country will need billions of dollars to support reconstruction efforts. Funding might prove a challenge though, considering the economic sanctions placed on the Syrian government by the West.
“Estimates by the World Bank show that if a political solution is reached today and reconstruction begins, it will take 10 years for the Syrian GDP to get close to its pre-war (2010) real GDP level, if the economy grows by 5 percent on average,” World Bank’s latest semi-annual MENA Economic Monitor report stated. “Growing at lower than this rate i.e. at 3 percent growth rate, will delay the recovery by another 10 years.”

“The scale of destruction and forgone economic growth – the loss in GDP relative to the “no-war” counterfactual in Syria alone is estimated at $ 200-300 billion – means that substantial resources will be needed for post-conflict reconstruction,” the report added.

Lurking inside the ivy-covered gothic towers and brutalist concrete blocks on college campuses are moldy ceilings, failing plumbing and antique boilers whose replacement parts are available only on eBay.
Still reeling from state funding cuts and battered endowments in the wake of the financial crisis, U.S. universities have been putting precious money toward financial aid, academic programs and gleaming buildings that might attract new students—neglecting aging electrical systems and leaky roofs.

Researchers from Colorado State University have been working with Google Street View to map pervasive natural-gas leaks. These leaks come from pipes that can be buried three-to-four feet below city streets. Many of the millions of miles of piping that deliver natural gas locally to urban and suburban homes are decades old—in some cases piping can be more than a century old. Older pipes can be made of cast-iron or bare steel, and they are often corroded or broken in places. But because they’re buried and because natural gas is invisible, it’s hard to tell when a pipe is leaking underneath a sidewalk. Sometimes, digging up and replacing a pipe isn’t worthwhile for the utility that owns it if the leaks isn’t an immediate risk to life and limb.
Besides the occasional explosion, there’s not much of a health risk associated with small natural-gas leaks. But natural gas is mostly comprised of methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas. Although carbon dioxide sticks around in the atmosphere longer than methane does, it’s much more potent at warming the Earth in the short term than carbon dioxide.
That should make fixing the aging, leaking pipes under our cities a municipal priority. Although utilities will sometimes send employees out to neighborhoods to measure gas leaks from their pipes, they’re not always keen to share that data with citizens or even researchers. Even if utility workers are willing to share, making a complete census of all the leaks can be challenging.
