LAST month KKR, a private-equity firm, announced that it would buy Envision Healthcare, one of America’s largest providers of doctors to hospitals. The deal was valued at $ 9.9bn, including debt. If shareholders agree to the sale, it will be the largest in a string of health-care investments by KKR, including an ambulance service, a company that helps treat children with autism and a maker of medical devices. “Ten years ago only a few private-equity houses had dedicated health-care teams,” says Dmitry Podpolny of McKinsey, a consultancy. “Today nearly everyone does.” Last year saw a frenzy of deal activity, the highest by value since the go-go year of 2007.
Private-equity funds are not the only ones keen on the industry. Institutional investors, tech-focused funds, generalist asset managers and corporate buyers are sniffing around, too. As they chase a limited number of targets, they are pushing up prices. Not high enough to dampen interest, however: health care is loved by…

The property at 1005 East 22nd Ave. in Vancouver, British Columbia, looks like a nice little starter home — a one-story, two-bedroom, one-bath, 878-square-foot bungalow painted subtle pastel colors. In the yard is a garden with raised beds; downtown is a 10-minute drive.
The listing describes the house as move-in ready but perfect for someone looking to make some renovations. It notes that the property’s most important feature is its price: “Opportunities do not come around like this very often,” the listing reads. “This is your chance to own a move-in ready home in Vancouver at a price we have not seen for a long time.”
And that asking price? Try $ 1,099,000 CND ($ 873,820 USD at current exchange rates). It may not be a steal, but it’s definitely a good deal.
Canada’s extremely high housing prices, particularly in Vancouver and Toronto, where the average cost of residential property is $ 1,046,900 and $ 744,700, respectively, according to the Canadian Real Estate Association, are among the reasons why mortgages account for two-thirds of Canadian household debt, which reached $ 2 trillion CND by the end of 2016, according to a Fraser Institute report. When compared to GDP, a 2017 report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) found that:
Compare the sky-high ratio of supposedly cautious Canadians to the average household debt-to-GDP ratio of 63 percent among advanced economies, according to an October 2017 International Monetary Fund study.
Although experts typically recommend spending no more than about 30 percent of income on housing, a RateHub report found that Vancouver homeowners spend nearly 80 percent of their income to keep a roof above their heads, while residents of greater Toronto spent 72 percent in the first quarter of 2017.
Low interest rates are one reason Canadians have had the option to take on higher debt loads, says Royal Bank economist Josh Nye. The average five-year fixed interest rate for a Canadian mortgage in 2016 was 4.64 percent, according to RateHub. That’s been good for the economy while other areas, like business investment, haven’t been performing as well. And, although Canadians have been taking on more debt relative to increases in their household income, they’ve also witnessed rising asset values that simultaneously help improve their financial outlook. “The interesting thing,” Nye says, is that “even though they are taking on more debt, the amount of their income that they have to dedicate to serving that debt hasn’t increased all that much.”
It’s difficult to think about Canadians spending so much on housing relative to income without being reminded of the U.S. housing crisis a decade ago.
This could change, however, now that the Bank of Canada is gradually starting to increase interest rates. Some are worried that beyond the extra money households may spend on servicing their debt, its connection to steep increases in housing prices could signal a coming recession.
OECD economists Catherine Mann and Filippo Gori posted a blog about the report: “The housing cycle is an important risk factor as excessive house price developments are predictive signals of future recessions. … A number of advanced economies have experienced worrying increases in house prices in recent years.”
Insecurity is being felt on the ground too. Dan Garrison, associate director of housing policy for the City of Vancouver, says the cost of homeownership in Vancouver has increased 350 to 400 percent over the past 15 years, while incomes have only increased on average by about 20 percent. The steep increase in the cost of housing, Garrison says, is being driven by foreign buyers and speculative demand. “We’ve had low interest rates for so long now that that’s made money cheap, and I think people have taken advantage of that, but I do think that the high housing costs, particularly in Vancouver and Toronto, are a part of that equation.”
At the same time, Canada’s economy is doing fairly well. Unemployment dropped to 5.9 percent in November, and most households should be able to absorb rising interest rates, Nye says, adding that the Bank of Canada wants to start now, gradually, so that if inflation does pick up, it won’t have to raise interest rates suddenly and by a larger amount.
It’s difficult to think about Canadians spending so much on housing relative to income without being reminded of the U.S. housing crisis a decade ago, when the American household debt-to-GDP ratio peaked at 99 percent in early 2008, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. However, Garrison and others are working to bring the market back to what they think are reasonable parameters, and perhaps, if the current environment is foreshadowing a downturn, trying to manage this ahead of time will lead to a slow deflation to equilibrium rather than a collapse.
And that bungalow on East 22nd Avenue? It was on the market for all of six days and sold just before Christmas for $ 1,085,000 CDN.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch has released its quarterly list of the most overowned stocks held by active managers.
The set is part of a larger report on “active managers’ holdings” from the bank’s equity and quant strategy group that was sent to clients Tuesday.
To be considered overowned, securities (excluding real estate investment trusts, or REIT’s) must be at least 1.5x their weight in the S&P 500 in the fund manager composite, and held by more than 35% of funds in the sample.
“History suggests one should watch out for crowded stocks at the beginning of the year: based on our data since 2009, the 10 most overweight stocks have lagged the 10 most underweight stocks on average by 57bp and 117bp during the first 15 and 30 calendar days of the year, respectively,” the bank said.
Here’s the full list of overowned stocks, sorted by relative weight:

You’ve probably heard of the term ‘sticker shock.’ If not, perhaps you should take a stroll to your nearest new car dealership and take a gander at some window stickers. New cars and trucks can get expensive, especially when you start adding pricey but desirable options like navigation, a leather interior, sunroof, or flashy chrome wheels.
But, according to Wikilender, it’s sometimes possible to more than double the base price of a new car by loading up with options. There’s one automaker in particular that you won’t be surprised to see charge an arm and a leg for certain options packages, but there are also some interesting surprises on this list.
Without further ado, check out this list of eight automobiles with options that double the price of the vehicle.
Porsche owns the profit-per-vehicle trophy. According to parent company Volkswagen’s most recent earnings report, Porsche earns an average profit of $ 17,250 per car. That’s over three times the profit margin of rivals like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
One reason why Porsche is so profitable is that it loads its vehicles up with options. According to Wikilender, in the case of the Cayenne, those options can raise the base price of $ 60,600 to an astronomical $ 153,010. That’s a staggering $ 92,410 in options.
The Porsche 718 Boxster may not be quite as crazy as the Cayenne when it comes to options, but it’s pretty dang close. It’s possible to add $ 70,290 worth of options to the $ 57,400 Boxster, according to Wikilender. And in case you were wondering, yes, the mechanically similar Porsche Cayman can also pack on huge options costs.
With a starting price just shy of $ 230,000, the Bentley Bentayga is already expensive. But if you’re not stingy with options, you can more than double that asking price to over $ 495,000. Just one option alone – the Breitling Mulliner Tourbillon Clock – costs a staggering $ 160,000.
Not all cars with super expensive options cost an arm and a leg. In fact, buyers of the Mini Cooper, which carries a base price of $ 20,950, can double the price of the little urban runabout if they aren’t careful, says Wikilender.
Surprised? No, neither are we. Yet another Porsche on this list of vehicles with the most absurd option costs. Wikilender says you can’t quite double the cost of a base 911 with options, but you can come pretty darn close.
You may not have seen this one coming, unless of course you’ve been shopping for a new fullsize pickup truck over the last few years. With a base price of around $ 27,000 and options of nearly $ 25,000, buyers could conceivably double the cost of a Ford F-150 XL.
Okay, so this one’s not so surprising. As is the case with Porsche, a lot of customers shopping in a Ferrari dealership have got the funds to make their chosen vehicle stand out from the crowd. According to Wikilender, the 488 GTB’s price can swell from $ 245,400 to $ 465,056 by piling on the options.
According to Wikilender, it’s not all that easy to nudge the price of the Mercedes C300 from just under $ 40,000 to its nearly $ 75,000 apogee. Still, all the cargo organizers in the world can’t be worth nearly doubling the base price of the car, right?

Juicero
Silicon Valley is the story of overthrowing entrenched interests through innovation.
Children dream of becoming inventors, and scientists come to Silicon Valley from all over the world.
But something is wrong when Juicero and Theranos are in the headlines, and bad behavior from Uber executives overshadows actual innovation.
$ 120 million in venture funding from Google Ventures and Kleiner Perkins, for a juicer? And the founder, Doug Evans, calling himself himself Steve Jobs “in his pursuit of juicing perfection?” And how is Theranos’s Elizabeth Holmes walking around freely?
Eventually, the rhetoric of innovation turns into …. a Google-backed punchline.
These stories are embarrassing, yes. But there’s something deeper going on here. Silicon Valley, an international treasure that birthed the technology of our age, is being destroyed.
Monopolies are now so powerful that they dictate the roll-out of new technology, and the only things left to invest in are the scraps that fall off the table.
Sometimes those scraps are Snapchat, which managed to keep alive, despite what Ben Thompson calls ‘theft‘ by Facebook.
Sometimes it’s Diapers.com, which was destroyed and bought out by Amazon through predatory pricing. And sometimes it’s Juicero and Theranos.
It’s not that Juicero and Theranos that are the problem. Mistakes — even really big, stupid ones — happen.
Business Insider/Alyson ShontellIt’s that there is increasingly less good stuff to offset the bad. Pets.com was embarrassing in 2000, but that was also when Google was getting going. Today it’s all scraps.
When platform monopolies dictate the roll-out of technology, there is less and less innovation, fewer places to invest, less to invent. Eventually, the rhetoric of innovation turns into DISRUPT, a quickly canceled show on MSNBC, and Juicero, a Google-backed punchline.
This moment of stagnating innovation and productivity is happening because Silicon Valley has turned its back on its most important political friend: antitrust. Instead, it’s embraced what it should understand as the enemy of innovation: monopoly.
As Barry Lynn has shown, Silicon Valley was born of anti-monopoly.
Larry Busacca/GettyIn 1956, a Republican administration and AT&T signed a consent decree forbidding AT&T from competing in any but common carrier communications services. The decree also forced AT&T to license its patents in a non-discriminatory manner to all comers.
One of those patents was for something called the transistor, which two small companies — Texas Instruments and Motorola — would commercialize.
In the 1990s, a suit against Microsoft allowed another startup named Google to offer an innovative search engine.
In the 1960s and 1970s, an antitrust suit against IBM caused the company to unbundle its hardware and software, leading to the creation of the American software industry. It treated suppliers for its new personal computing business with kid gloves, including a small company called Micro-Soft. In the 1990s, a suit against Microsoft allowed another startup named Google to offer an innovative search engine
and ad business without fear that Microsoft would use its control of the browser to strangle it.
The great business historian Alfred Chandler, in his book on the electronic century, called antitrust regulators the “Gods” of creation. Antitrust was originally understood as a uniquely American “charter of economic liberty”.
But there hasn’t been a Sherman Act Section 2 anti-monopolization case for 15 years. And the anti-merger Clayton Act is not being enforced. Neither Bush, nor Obama, nor Trump (so far), has seen fit to stop the monopolists from buying their way into dominance and blocking innovation.
Take Google.
Robert Galbraith/ReutersYes, the company created an amazing search engine over fifteen years ago. Since then, the company bought YouTube, Doubleclick, Maps, and Admob; it buys a company a week at this point. And it often shuts down products that don’t reach 100M+ users, while investing in luxury juicing machines. Surely Google is creating cool technology. But is that technology really being deployed? Or is it locked away, as patents were in AT&T’s 1956 vault before the government stepped in?
What once were upstarts and innovators are now enthroned. For instance, the iPhone is ten years old. Innovation means waiting to see if Apple will offer a bigger screen.
Innovation means waiting to see if Apple will offer a bigger screen.
It’s almost as thrilling as seeing yet another press release about how self-driving cars are almost working. I’m on the edge of my seat.
This is a ridiculous situation. Silicon Valley helped created the personal computer! It commercialized the internet! Popularized email!
Its scientists and engineers change the world. We have such amazing technology, and such big problems. But our liberty to address those problems in the commercial world must be protected by a democracy in the form of antitrust rules and suits, or Silicon Valley will die.
Mark Wilson/Getty ImagesWe will get frauds like Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, and predators like Marissa Mayer and Travis Kalanick.
Is that what Silicon Valley scientists and business leaders really want? To invest in and produce subpar juicers while everything cool waits on Jeff Bezos’s whim? Is that what they dreamed when they were young? Is that why they admired astronauts and entrepreneurs? Was their goal really to create “anti-competitive juice packet lock-in”?
That is where a lack of democracy has brought us, and Silicon Valley.
It is time for leaders in Silicon Valley to start demanding from our government the birthright of every American, which is an open market for commerce, innovation, and personal liberty.
It is time to demand antitrust, so that what once were innovative upstarts, and are now Kings, do not stop the next wave of innovation. Then there will be so much more to invest in, so much more to invent, and so much more to actually create.

With a fresh train strike throwing commuters into chaos as recently as this morning, Brits know all too well the endless frustrations of public transport.
From disrupted schedules to rude passengers and the crowded stuffiness of rush hour, travelling by train can be an irritating experience.
But if you’re sick of being squished on the London tube, the daily grind in Bangladesh will put you to shame.
Jaw-dropping images have captured the sheer chaos of commuters taking trains out of Dhaka city.
Men, women and children can be seen piled onto the outside and top of the train in a desperate attempt to get home for the day.
The experience is not only stressful, it’s downright dangerous, with workers risking their lives to clamber onto the train’s 12-ft-high roof.
Documentary maker Yousuf Tushar captured the striking photos after spending the day at the train station in the Bangladeshi capital.
The 33-year-old said: “It is busiest on the trains in the mornings and evenings when people are coming into the city to work or leaving to go home.
“Those who fail to get a place inside the train, end up climbing onto the roof or holding onto the sides and fronts of the train so that they can go home from Dhaka city.”
Some 2,000 people manage to jump onto the roof of the trains each day, with the help of other commuters.
Yousuf decided to climb onto the roof with them, where he withstood average speeds of 27mph (44km/h).
He said: ”Most people just sit on the roof, they often don’t hold onto anything so just have to rely on balance although sometimes you’ll see passengers holding onto each other.
“During festivals or even long holy days, the crowds can get even bigger.
“Most people want to get home and so they take the risk for their journey.”
Yousuf is a photographer who lives in Dhaka, set beside the Buriganga River.
There are more than 14.5 million people living in the capital city.
Data compiled by S3 Partners shows short interest now makes up more than 35% of the float, or shares available to the public, and that it would take 8.23 days for shorts to cover those positions.
Traders have grown increasingly bearish on Tesla since the company missed its 2016 deliveries target. On January 3, Tesla announced its 2016 deliveries totaled 76,230, well below the 80,000 to 90,000 that Wall Street was expecting.
“Our Q4 delivery count should be viewed as slightly conservative, as we only count a car as delivered if it is transferred to the customer and all paperwork is correct,” the company said in a statement at the time of the release in an effort to deflect criticism surrounding the shortfall.
S3 Partners
Additionally, Tesla has been burning cash at a somewhat worrying rate. While the company managed to end 2016 with $ 1.2 billion of cash, it’s something that Wall Street continues to pay close attention to.
And while these worries have been swirling around Tesla’s stock, it has so far been able to shrug off those concerns. Shares have rallied nearly 20% so far in 2017, and are up more than 30% since Tesla closed on its acquisition of SolarCity. Tesla is trading within striking distance of its April 2016 peak near $ 265 a share.
S3 warns Tesla is setting up as a “potential squeeze candidate” if the stock keeps rallying into earnings, which are due on February 15.
