As a stripped-down version of the Twentieth Century Fox theme plays, a midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show begins. “And God said, Let there be lips!” And there were lips: red lips, white teeth, black background. An iconic and blustering introduction to one of cinema’s greatest cult films, the opening credits to The Rocky Horror Picture Show set the tone for the film’s punk energy and playfully paradoxical atmosphere.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show, now one of the most successful cult films of all time, began as a stage play. Originally titled They Came from Denton High, it was written by Richard O’Brien while he was a broke actor trying to find work in London and intended as an homage to the science fiction B-movies he loved as a child.

Alex introduced the pair by saying: “Time now for our big Strictly exclusive and it’s all for a brilliant cause.”

The One Show’s Gethin chimed in: “It is and to tell us all about it are two people who have made it their mission to get the nation dancing…”

Alex then stepped in and excitedly shouted: “It’s our favourite double act, it’s Tess and Claudia!”

The pair received a round of applause from those inside the BBC studios as their faces appeared on a screen via a video link.

However, at this point, The One show hosts began to experience difficulties in hearing Claudia’s response.

Breaking up as she responded, Claudia said: “I don’t have… I don’t know what…I apologise…”

Noticing the awkward silence caused by the technical error, Gethin quipped: “This is like Skyping with parents.”

Alex agreed before promptly cutting Claudia off and moving the conversation on.

Although viewers couldn’t see Kate’s reaction visually, they could hear what was being said by the panel, with Kate exclaiming: “What’s going on there?”

Her co-star Ben quipped: “Back in the jungle?” making reference to the shower scenes which were shown on the reality show last month.

Still in a state of shock, she declared: “What the heck?”

Trying to get a better picture of when the photo was taken, Kate commented: “That was GMTV in 2000,” before another image appeared on screen which was less busty.

In every other category at the Oscars, the nominee with the most votes wins. It sounds obvious. Except that since 2010 the voting rules for the biggest award of the night were changed. The Academy realised that if two major films polarised the vote, a third could sneak past, so they changed the rules. This is meant to ensure that the most popular overall wins, even if it is not everyone’s first choice. Suddenly outsiders like Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody with huge popular backing and massive box office success stand a chance.

The new system also means that four of the last six Best Directors have not also won Best Picture.

At the moment the overwhelming favourite for both is Alfonso Cuaron and Roma. Bohemian Rhapsody and Black Panther are clear outsiders.

Under the new system, however, a Best Picture nominee must receive more than 50% of the vote to be the clear winner. This is a tough task in a broad field, especially since the category was expanded to allow up to ten nominees.

If no film does so, a complicated system kicks in, where second and third choices suddenly hold the deciding vote but in a very specific order.

The entire system is administered as ever by Price Waterhouse Cooper, despite the staggering mix-up in 2017 when La La Land was announced instead of Moonlight.

Basically, in the event of no clear winner, the film in last place is discarded and the film in second place has those ballot numbers added to the main vote. It continues like this until a film passes the 50% barrier.

Just to make your head hurt a little more, if the film in second place on a discarded ballot has already been discarded itself, then the third place (or fourth or fifth etc) votes are redistributed.

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY DROPPED BY MAJOR AWARDS FOR THIS HORRIFYING REASON

Can this realistically help Bohemian Rhapsody or Black Panther? Both are far behind the favourites in all the predictions and bookies’ odds.

However, they may be helped by more than the voting procedure. Rather like Brexit or Trump, both could be helped by “shy voters”. People might publicly signal they support the more highly regarded and artistically credible contender but privately cast their vote for a guilty pleasure or crowd pleaser.

If anything, though, the system is most likely to help Green Book, which is broadly popular, handsomely made and ticks all the boxes of representation, diversity and moral satisfaction. It could cause one of the big upsets of the night.

All will be revealed from 8pm EST (1am in the UK) tonight.

This year has thrown up sporting images that will live long in the memory – from delirious World Cup celebrations amid a Moscow downpour to an infamous rant by one of tennis’s all-time greats.

Here, RT Sport takes a look at some of the most spectacular pictures from 2018 – from the sublime to the ridiculous and back again.    

GIVE PEACE A SPORTING CHANCE 

Sometimes sport can provide a chance for peace that goes beyond politics and diplomacy.

That was the case at this year’s Winter Olympics in PyeongChang in February, where North and South Korea put long-running hostilities aside to march under a unified flag at the opening and closing ceremonies and fielded a joint team in the women’s ice hockey event.

The North Korean cheerleading team also amazed the crowds with their stunning synchronized routines in the stands.   

THE EAGLES SOAR

The Philadelphia Eagles won their first ever Super Bowl at the third time of asking as they beat the New England Patriots in a thriller in February.

That sparked wild scenes at the US Bank stadium in Minneapolis as well as back home in Philadelphia.  

RONALDO DEFIES GRAVITY

Cristiano Ronaldo has had a year of mixed fortunes, picking up yet another Champions League title with Real Madrid in May, but coming under scrutiny off the pitch amid rape allegations and tax issues in Spain.

But he is responsible for one image that will linger long in the memory when he struck an incredible overhead kick for Real against current club Juventus in last season’s Champions League quarter-final first leg in Turin in April.    

Teammate Gareth Bale would repeat a similar feat in the final against Liverpool, but Ronaldo’s was an effort so stunning that it even drew praise from rival fans in Turin and the legendary Gianluigi Buffon in the Juve goal.

THE CAPS FINALLY GET THE PRIZE

After suffering agony after agony in their quest for Stanley Cup glory, the Washington Capitals and their charismatic Russian captain Alex Ovechkin finally landed club hockey’s biggest prize in June. Cue suitably raucous celebrations – including Ovechkin and the team later frolicking in some downtown fountains.

SINGING IN THE RAIN

The Russia 2018 World Cup in was widely hailed as among the best in the tournament’s long and illustrious history, and produced some iconic images to match.

The final between France and Croatia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium was played out in stifling heat which gave way to a massive downpour – making for some truly stunning pictures of the celebrations by the players and big-name spectators.

AKINFEEV’S LEFT FOOT

Another World Cup image that will go down in the history books – not least for the Russian hosts – was when goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev’s acrobatic save handed Russia a stunning penalty shootout win over Spain in the last 16. You’ve heard of Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’, now Russia has the legend of the ‘Left Foot of Akinfeev’.

THANKING A HALO

Sauber F1 driver Charles Leclerc was just inches from disaster in a horror crash with McLaren driver Fernando Alonso at the Belgian Grand Prix in August.

Leclerc emerged unscathed and credited the new ‘Halo’ protection device with saving him after Alonso’s car was deflected over his head.

TIGER ROARS BACK

Golf legend Tiger Woods’ struggles have been well documented on the course as well as off it. But the 14-time Major winner put his troubles behind him with a stunning comeback win at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta in September.

Fans crowded round the 18th green to see an emotional Woods, 42, clinch his first title in more than five years – and prove that there was more to come from a man many feared was finished.

WILLIAMS LOSES IT

All-time tennis great Serena Williams also captured the headlines in September during her US Open final defeat to Japan’s Naomi Osaka.

After being handed a code violation for receiving coaching – which she denied – Williams went on to brand umpire Carlos Ramos a “liar” and a “thief” in a rant captured in all its fury on camera.  

NO MERCY 

October saw what was touted as the biggest fight in MMA history as Russian UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov met Irish megastar Conor McGregor in Las Vegas.

The meeting lived up to the hype after a toxic build-up, and saw Nurmagomedov submit McGregor in the fourth round before exploding outside the cage in an attack on members of the Irishman’s team.

A fight and images that will live long in the memory.  

‘RESURRECTED’  

Another comeback graced 2018 when heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury returned to the big time when he took on WBC champion Deontay Wilder in Los Angeles in December.

The bout ended in a controversial draw, but will be remembered for the classic 12th round which saw Wilder brutally floor Fury with a combination that looked for all the world like it had left the Brit out for the count.

Fury had other ideas though, remarkably snapping back into life before clambering to his feet and beating the count.

The incident prompted comparisons to wrestling icon The Undertaker amid a mass of memes on social media.

On December 24, 1968 — exactly 50 years ago — Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, Jim Lovell, and William Anders became the first humans to circle the moon.

French public is angry with Emmanuel Macron after the cheerful President posed for photos with young men at Saint Martin, one of whom showed the middle finger to the cameras.

The controversial pictures were made during Macron’s visit to the Caribbean island, devastated after hurricane Irma last year.

The French leader was followed by a host of photographers as he walked for five hours, despite sporadic rain, entered homes and talked to the locals about their life and rebuilding after the tragedy. 

The reconstruction seems far from over at Saint Martin, with many houses remaining half-built or in need of repairs.

Macron’s PR-stunt went wrong when he came across two bare-chested young men, who had bandannas on their heads. One of them told to the French leader that he was a “robber” and was recently released from prison.

The president wasn’t at all perplexed by such confession as he told the guy that he should leave his criminal past behind and take part in reconstruction.

He then on went hugging the men and posing for photos with them as one showed a middle finger.

The opposition in France was quick to repost the photo and used the embarrassing moment as chance to grill Macron.

Many on twitter lamented that Macron is embarrassing the country, adding to the disastrous Benalla affair a “finger affair.”

Others noted that people in the region devastated by the hurricane expect help rather than selfie opportunities.

The French president later defended his actions by saying that his goal was to help all of the Saint Martin youth. “I love every child of the Republic, no matter how stupid he is,” he explained.

Irma became the most devastating hurricane to hit Saint Martin in over a century, with the damage to the French side of the island estimated at over $ 1.4 billion by Paris.

Homes were destroyed, cars tossed around, with the island’s deep sea port and airport also heavily hit. The port is now only operating at less than half of its capacity, which also hampers the reconstruction, while the airport is expected to fully restore its operations next year.

Saint Martin’s main income provider, the tourism industry, also suffered a major blow, with only 800 rooms out of the 1600 available earlier being ready to host guests in December when the season starts.
