  • Online courses pose an opportunity for cheap, impactful learning.
  • CreativeLive is the go-to site for creatives with more than 1,500 classes taught by 650+ industry-leading experts.
  • Classes are as low as $ 20, and you can buy and own them for forever — just in case you one day need a refresher.
  • Below are 15 of the site’s best-selling courses.

Online classes have become increasingly popular in the last few years — and for many good reasons.

They’re cheap, impactful, and a step towards a better career and/or personal life that you can begin almost instantaneously. You can take courses from Ivy Leagues at a fraction of the cost of attending, tailor a resume for new job opportunities or a shifting industry without heading back to a college campus, or skirt an existential crisis by learning a new skill at any point in your life.

In other words, online classes provide meaningful access to affordable education — you just have to commit to showing up (or, rather, logging on).

There are a plethora of computer and business classes on sites like Udemy, Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and EdX, but creatives may find the most appealing classes at CreativeLive. The site houses over 1,500 classes taught by 650+ industry-leading experts. The community includes over 10 million students, and each class falls under one of five categories: photo and video, art and design, music and audio, craft and maker, or money and life. Ultimately, the classes are centered around making creativity a habit, be it for personal or professional use.

You can watch on-air broadcasts for free on five channels for 24-hours a day, or you can buy a class and own it for life with the option to watch, rewind, and access bonus materials whenever. This is particularly great for anyone looking to develop a hobby, since you may fall out of consistent practice and want to pick it up again later on. As a whole, the site adds structure, insight, and timetables to an industry that can feel obscure and opaque to beginners as well as walk-throughs of new advancements for veterans.

If you’re looking for a way to develop a creative habit, add some industry know-how, or expand a creative business (many of which rely heavily upon the individual), then CreativeLive may be a tool worth considering.

Truth behind iconic photograph https://briefnews.eu/truth-behind-iconic-photograph/ https://briefnews.eu/truth-behind-iconic-photograph/#respond Fri, 27 Apr 2018 18:00:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/truth-behind-iconic-photograph/ THE Australian man involved in one of the world’s most powerful photographs will be honoured for his role in the bold move five decades on.

Peter Norman was standing on the podium alongside US athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City when the pair raised their first in a Black Power salute that became a defining symbol of the civil rights movement.

Mr Norman, who had split the pair by placing second in the 200 metre race, wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights Badge and said “I’ll stand with you” when the athletes told him of their plan.

Now, he is set to be recognised by the Australian Olympic Committee for his role in the protest, Fairfax media reports.

Mr Norman will be posthumously given the AOC’s highest honour, the Order of Merit for the “exceptional” courage he showed in taking a stand that day.

The recognition caps off decades of drama for Mr Norman after taking part in the picture that saw him outcast from the sport and criticised alongside the US athletes.

At the time, Mr Carlos and Mr Smith were expelled from the Olympic Village and threatened with death and violence in the US. Later, they came to be regarded as heroes, however Mr Norman’s role remained sidelined, with his place left empty when San Jose State University erected a statue.

Mr Smith and Mr Carlos have recognised Mr Norman’s role in the moment and helped carry the coffin at his funeral in 2006.

“We knew that what we were going to do was far greater than any athletic feat,” Mr Carlos said about the moment on the dias. “He said, ‘I’ll stand with you.’”

“I saw love. Peter never flinched. He never turned his eyes, he never turned his head.”

In 2012, Labor MP Andrew Leigh campaigned for an apology to Mr Norman and his family.

Mr Carlos said: “There’s no one in the nation of Australia that should be honoured, recognised, appreciated more than Peter Norman for his humanitarian concerns, his character, his strength and his willingness to be a sacrificial lamb for justice.”

His profile was given a further boost in 2015 when an article called “the white man in that photo” was shared more than 30,000 times online by an arts magazine.

Writer Riccardo Gazzaniga said he thought Mr Norman was a “simpering Englishman … but I was wrong.”

The AOC denies Mr Norman was officially snubbed after taking part, however he was overlooked for the 1972 Olympics despite easily qualifying.

Now AOC president John Coates suggested the group had been “negligent” in not recognising him sooner, and recommended the honour for the fifty year anniversary of the Mexico games.

Broadcaster Sandy Gall reveals why THIS is his favourite photograph https://briefnews.eu/broadcaster-sandy-gall-reveals-why-this-is-his-favourite-photograph/ https://briefnews.eu/broadcaster-sandy-gall-reveals-why-this-is-his-favourite-photograph/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 02:43:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/broadcaster-sandy-gall-reveals-why-this-is-his-favourite-photograph/

Reggie had arranged a book signing for me at the shop, which was owned by Bernard Stone, who Reggie knew well because he often went there for his books.

As you can imagine it was funny walking in there for the first time and seeing a waxwork of Sigmund Freud in his tweed jacket. It was a signing for my second novel, Chasing The Dragon, set in Hong Kong and the South China Sea where a large shipment of class A drugs is due to be intercepted by the CIA.

I met Reggie at the ITN offices in London in the early 60s and became good friends with him. We had different diplomatic and correspondent roles there and by the time News At Ten began in 1967 Reggie had become one of its first presenters.

It was about a year after News At Ten began that our editor, Nigel Ryan, asked me to join the presenting team.

I wasn’t keen on being studio based as I’d been out in the field for so long, but I soon got used to live news presenting.

I got told things in my ear, which wasn’t easy at first and the thought this huge audience was watching could make you nervous.

But you quickly forgot that. We also got recognised by the public and that was part and parcel of presenting on television.

I did News At Ten with Reggie, while at the same time I returned as a foreign correspondent reporting from Africa, the Middle East and later Afghanistan in the 1980s.

News At Ten was a big programme with dramatic music, bongs and two presenters sitting behind the desk.

More importantly, it represented high-quality journalism coupled with very good correspondents and a superior editing team; big scoops and plenty of international news coverage.

Everyone will remember that News At Ten ended every evening with an ‘and finally’ light-hearted story. One night, Reggie, who always had this smile across his face with this item, told viewers that an old lady’s cat had got trapped high up a tree and the emergency services had managed to rescue it.

He then closed the item and the programme by saying, ‘Unfortunately’ – while breaking into his wide smile – ‘they then accidentally drove over the cat and killed it.’ He’d allowed himself that unknowing smile, which he was famous for, and the next thing was the ITN phone lines were jammed all night with viewers protesting, ‘How dare he report on this poor cat’s death and have a laugh across his face.’

He didn’t mean to, but it was the irony of it all.

We lived not far from each other in Kent, where he had a weekend house, which he later sold to the actor Rex Harrison. He was a very generous fellow and whenever you went out with him for a meal Reggie would always offer you a bottle of wine.

I can’t remember where I was when I heard of Reggie’s death in 1984, aged just 51, but it was a shock despite the fact that he had been very unwell during those final years. I was very sorry to hear of his death as we’d been friends and colleagues for a long time.

I’ll remember Reggie as an amusing fellow to be with and someone you could always rely on for a joke. That was how it was for us at ITN and on News At Ten and I think the public saw the same.”

Jeffrey Archer reveals why THIS is his favourite photograph https://briefnews.eu/jeffrey-archer-reveals-why-this-is-his-favourite-photograph/ https://briefnews.eu/jeffrey-archer-reveals-why-this-is-his-favourite-photograph/#respond Sun, 10 Dec 2017 02:36:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jeffrey-archer-reveals-why-this-is-his-favourite-photograph/

“Here I am (far right), aged 23, with The Beatles and fellow charity fundraiser Sir Nicholas Lloyd backstage at the Liverpool Empire Theatre on June 12, 1963.

This was the first time I had met the Fab Four, having travelled up to Liverpool, armed with Oxfam posters and collecting tins, in the hope of securing an impromptu photo opportunity with the band.

At the time I was studying at Oxford and closely involved with the Oxford-based charity which had set itself the ambitious challenge of raising £1 million to mark its 21st birthday.

The charity had asked me to head up the student side of the fundraising campaign and as we had the backing of a national newspaper, I thought we were in with a chance.

Shortly afterwards, the then Prime Minister and the University’s chancellor Harold Macmillan gave a talk at Oxford and I very wickedly took the opportunity to ask if he would officially back the campaign.

He agreed, so I then approached Brian Epstein, the Beatles manager, and told him the Prime Minister was backing the campaign – would the band formally back it as well?

The Beatles must have received many similar requests, and when Epstein said he’d get back to me I must admit I wrote it off.

But a day or so later he did get in touch again, with The Beatles’ support, and at my suggestion agreed to bring the boys down to Brasenose College, Oxford, of which I was a member, at the climax of the appeal the following year.

This was the height of Beatlemania and the band had just visited America for the first time where they had been greeted by thousands of screaming fans at JFK airport.

With the group besieged wherever they went, the police were worried that they wouldn’t be able to control the crowds outside the college, so it was decided to keep their arrival quiet and smuggle them in from the railway station by car.

The Beatles visited the college on March 5, 1964, and after dining with a group of dons who included Sir Noel Frederick Hall, an eminent economist and the then principal of the college, we all retired to his lodgings for drinks, where we were photographed sitting or standing around his fireplace, chatting.

The thing that struck me most was Paul McCartney telling me that he had never gone to university, even though it was clear to me that we would have been perfectly capable of getting a degree at Oxford.

He was an incredibly clever guy, as was John Lennon, but it made me realise that many people back then just didn’t get the chance to pursue higher education.

My other recollections were that George was charming and Ringo was fun.

They could have sulked and given the impression that they would rather not have been there, but although they couldn’t resist teasing the dons a little, they behaved very well.

I never saw John again because he moved to America, but George and I became friends and he used my accountant for a while.

I bumped into Ringo about 20 years ago at a theatre and recently caught up with Paul at a party at the home of Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York, where he said he’d been fascinated by the American election result.

Looking back, I’m amazed I had the chutzpah to approach The Beatles, but I was young – and I wanted to raise that £1m. I’m delighted to say that we did.”

The other day I showed my children these photographs of the Starlight Lapland Wish Trip in 2014 and my little boy Orson, who was four at the time, said, ‘Oh it was the best trip ever.’

Nothing could top it: we’ve been all over the world, we’ve been to beaches and water parks, but that was the trip that really touched him.

You have to catch that magic when you can because it’s not there for long with children. My two youngest children are with me in the picture: Orson and Olivia, who was six. My 18 year old Isabella had already been to Lapland when she was seven.

It was as cold as it looks. Absolutely freezing. The children had never experienced cold like that. It’s a fantasy – extreme everything: the darkness, how it hardly got light at all, the temperature, the landscape, Father Christmas, the huskies. Everything was extreme and when you’re little, you hold on to that for ever.

And what made it extra special was being with the other children. We didn’t have to go on the coach with the nine other families, but my little girl did. She loved it – she was up there with them all singing. And even though there were some very sick children and some of the children weren’t able-bodied to do all the activities, my children didn’t see it: they just saw children like they were.

I got involved with Starlight Children’s Foundation 15 years ago through a charity ball. When your children are poorly, the last thing you want is people looking fearful. And that’s how Starlight is: there’s no fear around it, even with the very tragic stories. The atmosphere around the charity is just full of hope and joy, and everything’s a ‘yes’. And I like that – I’m a bit of a ‘yes’ person.

My relationship with families and carers on the Lapland trip was one of appreciating every last bit, not thinking about it being tragic or sad, but highlighting the good bits and making them stand out.

And the really shocking thing was thinking, ‘This can’t be their last hope or the last thing that child wanted to do.’ I got such strength from these parents: they’re living in the moment. I came away thinking, ‘I’m never worrying about a thing that’s happening tomorrow. It’s about right now, this minute, this hour, and filling this day with everything you can do to make it the best it can be.’

Understanding my listeners on Smooth Radio’s drivetime show comes from all the years of driving to Elstree to film Holby City, especially the drive home. I was listening to Simon Mayo for 10 years on the drive as there was always traffic.

The acting tradition of ‘the show must go on’ did help me to do my radio show, even when I was in pain after my accident on The Jump. But I’m a tough cookie: I have to work, I need to work, and I wasn’t going to let my accident take that as well.

When your body doesn’t work quite as it did, through no fault of your own, it’s a real shocker. ‘Why does it hurt when I put my socks on?’ I had to seriously think about picking up my son’s Lego the other night, then had to get my husband Oliver to do it because of the pain. I just want that to go and then it will be truly behind me.

The door is open for me to return to Holby. But when you’re in those big shows, you can never guarantee that you’ll be there for school events. And I missed too much with my eldest girl – I was determined that I wasn’t going to miss them with the little ones. And as I’ve learned from working with children at Starlight, those moments are so precious. No job is bigger than those moments with the kids.

“This photo was taken at last year’s Pride Of Britain Awards and the man I am hugging is David Nott. David was on stage receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award for all of the work he has done as a surgeon in war zones over the last 25 years or so.

One of David’s most recent heroic acts took place in Syria in the middle of all the bombing.

He was operating on a little girl when suddenly a warning went out and everyone was ordered to leave the hospital as it was due to be targeted by an air strike. David, who refused to leave the girl to die, was accompanied by a Red Cross anaesthetist. He asked the anaesthetist, ‘Do you want to go?’ He replied, ‘No, I’ll stay with you.’

So all three believed that they would die that day, but nothing happened and all three survived.

Another incident in Syria saw David carry out an operation on an IS fighter. While they were operating, seven IS fanatics burst into his theatre. David’s Syrian colleague, also a surgeon, told him not to open his mouth otherwise they would kill him if they knew he was British.

They were talking and shouting and lingered for 20 minutes with their guns on the floor, then finally left after they realised David had saved the man on the operating theatre. I

t doesn’t get any more terrifying than those stories but that’s the measure of David.

In the background of the photo we have the journalist Mark Austin and Tom Jones.

Most of the awards are chosen by the judges and I am one of them, however, two or three are chosen externally. Lifetime Achievement was one of those. I was only told a week before that David Nott had won and I knew I recognised his name… And yes, of course, he operated on me in 2002.

At the time I had a problem with my gallbladder, which had been going on for about three years – it’s the most painful thing. Forget childbirth, that’s a walk in the park compared to a gallstone. One Thursday it started grumbling again and, by Friday, I was in a lot of pain.

I was in agony by Saturday and said to my then partner you have to get me to hospital.

I was rushed to A&E at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and luckily for me David Nott was on duty.

He took me straight upstairs, told me I wasn’t very well and it was my gallbladder. I then had a difficult six-hour operation.

Now cut to the night before the Pride Of Britain Awards before this photo was taken. All the winners have a dinner for themselves and their families and I met David and his wife. I asked him if he remembered operating on me, and he said, ‘Yes I do remember, you had sepsis.

When I saw you in A&E I thought you had four to six hours to live.’ I was in total shock. I had no idea.

How lucky was I that he was there to recognise it because it acts as fast as meningitis. Only recently the sepsis word has become more common. Every 3.5 seconds someone dies of it in the world. It is treatable with antibiotics but it has to be recognised.

I just wanted to thank him and my children wanted to thank him who were only five and 10 when it happened in 2002.

So on stage I said a 20-second thank you and cried, and David just gave me a big hug. He has now set up the David Nott Foundation, which trains surgeons to carry out his work in war zones and London hospitals.

He has also operated on the likes of Tony Blair when he had a heart problem, because he specialises in keyhole surgery.

This is the 19th Pride Of Britain Awards and I have presented all of them from 1999. I always tell the winners this night is about you. This year so much tragedy has gone on and it will be emotional. It’s one of those events that touches a lot of souls.

And I feel very lucky when I look at this photo. There are not many like David, who has saved thousands of lives. He is utterly selfless.

A lot of winners are like that and you feel the world is a better place when you have been around them.”

The Pride Of Britain Awards is on ITV at 8pm on Tuesday.
