Time for more Solo news! As this week chock-full of Solo details comes to a close, it’s time to learn a little about Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s droid character, L3-37.

This week was a cornucopia of Solo: A Star Wars Story riches. Let’s recap!

Now that we’re all caught up, here’s something new! Entertainment Weekly has some new details on Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s new droid character, L3-37. Unlike most other droids in the Star Wars universe, L3-37 is self-made. She’s constructed herself over the years, constantly changing and rearranging her various parts to become the droid she is when we meet her in Solo.

“She’s a self-modified droid,” says co-writer Jon Kasdan. “The idea is that she’s sort of a mutt, if you will, of various parts of different kinds of droids who has improved upon herself.”

As the Solo trailer hinted, L3-37 has a “working relationship” with Donald Glover‘s Lando. “[I]t’s very sophisticated and informed by years of working together,” says co-writer Lawrence Kasdan. Kasdan goes on to say:

“Phoebe, herself, is hilarious. The effect that she will appear in is amazing, but she comes through very strongly even with this astounding [CGI], both her humor and her physicality. If you meet Phoebe, she’s one of these people you just fall in love with immediately.”

Director Ron Howard echoes the “hilarious” compliment, saying: “She’s capable of some pretty interesting conversations. And Phoebe is hilarious and brilliant and really helped bring that character to life in ways that are funny and surprising.”

Not Just Comic Relief

Waller-Bridge has a background in comedy, having appeared in the Amazon series Fleabag. But despite all this talk of hilarity, Jon Kasdan also stresses that the character isn’t there just for comic relief:

“She’s an absolute engine, not just for comedy, but for point of view, and she’s got a very strong personality.”

Waller-Bridge, who plays L3-37 via motion-capture, is not interviewed in the EW piece, which is slightly disappointing. The actress hasn’t said much about the project yet, likely due to the secrecy involving most Star Wars films. Waller-Bridge did, however, provide some previous insight into the surprising firing of original directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller and the hiring of new director Ron Howard. Speaking with IGN, the actress said:

“The handover there was done with such warmth and generosity from everybody, and Ron’s just a master at his craft; he’s going to make a beautiful film out of it…You just really trust him and it was just really exciting to work with him. I mean, it would’ve been exciting to just pass him in a corridor, let alone for him to be parachuted in to the film you’re working on.”

Waller-Bridge then added:

“We’d done some really, really great stuff with Chris and Phil that everyone was really thrilled with, and I think a lot of that will still be in it.”

And those who know Phoebe Robinson for her standup, or her role on I Love Dick, or her book You Can’t Touch My Hair (And Other Things I Still Have to Explain) will likely know that she hosts a comedy/storytelling podcast with Jessica Williams. And those who somehow don’t but should know about that podcast — 2 Dope Queens — soon will, because it’s just announced that it’s been picked up by HBO.

The 40-60 minute podcast about…everything (some select topics: vagina dentata, sex with the Rock, man buns, Broadway, the Civil Rights Movement, reparations) should translate pretty easily to the small screen, for 2 Dope Queens is taped live (at Brooklyn’s Union Hall), and kind of reads like a variety show, with a few guest stars per episode. Their impressive roster of guests has included Gabrielle Union, Hannibal Buress, Ilana Glazier, Maria Bamford, Aparna Nancherla, Jon Hamm, Bob the Drag Queen, and even Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland, aka Nick Kroll and John Mulaney.

Robinson gave a statement, quoted in the Hollywood Reporter:

Two Dope Queens and HBO going half on a TV baby? A dream come true. The work wife and I are beyond thrilled that the formula we’ve perfected over the past four seasons of doing the podcast (Ignorance x Cocoa Butter + Comedic Honesty) is being brought to this network.

Casey Bloys, the programming president at HBO, said, “Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson prove you can be hilarious and socially conscious at the same time.” The primary cable network will work with Williams and Robinson to format 2 Dope Queens as four hourlong specials.

The 1971 Version ofThe Beguiled 

Seeing the Sofia Coppola/Cannes news about The Beguiled, her adaptation of Thomas P. Cullinan’s novel and Don Siegel’s 1971 film, inspired a rewatch of the latter. Clint Eastwood stars as an injured Union soldier who is taken in by the young women of a Confederate all-girl boarding school in Mississippi. He manipulates them in an erotic game that, of course, ends badly. And then the body horror starts, as our own Jason Bailey discussed in his recent review of the film.

In The Beguiled, Eastwood eschews his tough-guy persona to play a smarmy predator. A few years later, Eastwood would cast himself in the traditionally female role of a victim and object of obsession in his directorial debut, Play Misty for Me. The Beguiled was released a few months before the iconic Dirty Harry, which cemented his fame.

The movie’s sexism aside, The Beguiled is an interesting snapshot of Eastwood’s evolution as an actor and is as complicated as Eastwood himself. It calls to mind the weird disconnect and tension between his screen image as the stoic hero/antihero/public servant and his reputation as a family man — who was also known for his many affairs (often with much younger co-stars) and illegitimate children. — Alison Nastasi, Weekend Editor

“The Shadow Cinema of the ‘70s” at Quad Cinema

In last week’s interview with author Charles Taylor, I mentioned how I’d seen embarrassingly few of the movies he analyzes in his excellent new book Opening Wednesday at a Theater or Drive-In Near You. Luckily, I live in New York, where the newly reopened (and thoroughly excellent) Quad Cinema hosted a weekend of those films; I saw five, and all were varying degrees of great. Walter Hill’s Hard Times (available on Amazon Video) is a lean, mean, minimalist character study, with a terrific central performance by Charles Bronson, who too often, in the years that followed, had no reason to bother acting at all. Prime Cut (only available on disc) is a shockingly hard-edged item about corruption and exploitation in the Midwest, with Lee Marvin in fine form and Gene Hackman doing one of his chillingly good-natured bad guy turns. He’s similarly, desperately scary in Cisco Pike (disc only) a shambling meditation of the end of the ‘60s, with one of Kris Kristofferson’s first, and still best, performances. But the series highlights were Citizens Band, Jonathan Demme’s wise and witty portrait of small-town oddballs, and American Hot Wax, a staggeringly joyful celebration of creativity, youthful rebellion, and rock and roll. Neither of those films have ever been released on DVD or Blu-ray, which is downright shameful, though Citizen’s Band is available for rental or purchase on Amazon Video – and you didn’t hear it here, but torrents and YouTube rips of Hot Wax are not too hard to find. Selenis Leyva as Gloria Mendoza on Orange Is the New Black 

Full disclosure: I am not yes finished with the 5th season of OITNB, so if I say anything that turns out to be contradicted in later episodes, my apologies. Thus far, though, this time/narrative-encased (yet somehow still dizzyingly meandering, and somewhat uneven) season — about a riot at Litchfield that takes place over the course of three days — revels in giving into chaos. The power structures within the prison have been thrown askew, and the characters are rapidly rebuilding, then just as quickly dismantling, new structures, as leadership in the riot gets passed around in the form of a gun. The audience has to adapt to new narrative structures, and new character alliances, just as quickly.

As Gloria Mendoza, Selenis Leyva manages to bring a grounding performance into the mix, resisting chaos (at least for now) as much as she can. Yet somehow this doesn’t make Gloria in any way a boring character, but actually one of the more interesting ones. Ever so slightly older than a many of the inmates (especially those within the “Spanish Harlem” section of Litchfield), Gloria bears the burdens of being just a little more rationally driven (unless it involves her kid, as we saw in her plot line with Burset). She thus of knowingly watches as utopic ideals crumble around her, as the lovely notion of a Litchfield without abusive guards turns into its own squalid, often amoral playground, full of its own abuses. Leyva is a commanding actor, effortlessly thrusting viewers into the rhythms of her multilayered emotional experience — particularly in a scene where she calls Aleida Diaz to tell her about how Daya might be in major trouble, but then instead convincingly holds back, quickly spinning a personal excuse for the call. There’s a lot of twisted stuff that happens on this show — and the type of hardened warmth Gloria exudes is always refreshing. — Moze Halperin, Senior Editor

Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Crashing 

As a huge fan of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s  Fleabag (and one who’s also hugely excited about her upcoming series starring Sandra Oh as a spy hunting a psychopathic assassin), I was a little less excited about the premise of Crashing. It sounded — and in many ways, is — a lot like a more traditional ensemble sitcom, following the lives of a gaggle of semi-bohemian 30-somethings. (The catch of the premise is that they all live in an abandoned hospital.) But Bridge is an expert at quickly writing characters with weird, hilarious mean streaks and, often, big hearts hidden beneath their very particular, Londoner jadedness. One of the things that surprised me most about my enjoyment of the first season was that I wasn’t annoyed by its seemingly typical queerbait-y plot — which (light spoiler), it turns out, actually goes somewhere non-bait-y at all! Anyway, the short first season is a completely enjoyable three-ish hours of TV, with a pack of “unlikable” characters who also happen to be damn endearing. — Moze Halperin, Senior Editor

A new series, however, will bring Oh more frequently to your screens. It’s the next from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator/star of the poignant yet biting dark comedy, Fleabag, as well as Crashing, the ensemble comedy about not-quite-squatters in an abandoned hospital.

The new, Oh-starring comedy is called Killing Eve, and will air on BBC America. This is the first series of Waller-Bridge’s that isn’t billed as a comedy; actually, it’s an eight-episode spy thriller. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Oh will play the title role, a security operative who’s stuck at her desk, whose aspirations of being a spy out in the field seem futile — until she becomes tasked with hunting down a psychopathic assassin, named Villanelle. Waller-Bridge will write all eight of the episodes, and will also serve as showrunner.

Waller-Bridge said in a statement, “I am quivering with excitement about working with Sandra! I have been a huge fan of hers forever and am pinching myself that she is playing our Eve. She is going to be so badass in this role.”

As you may have noted, the premise has echoes of Spy, but is actually adapted from novellas (Codename Villanelle and Villanelle: Hollowpoint) by Luke Jennings. The author mentioned on Twitter that casting for the Villannelle character is imminent:

And Bridge released a colorful statement of glee about the casting news, saying, “I am quivering with excitement about working with Sandra! I have been a huge fan of hers forever and am pinching myself that she is playing our Eve. She is going to be so badass in this role.”
