The Catalan side paid £142million for Coutinho last January and he won La Liga and the Copa del Rey honours in his first few months.

But his dream move to the Camp Nou has turned into a nightmare and he is struggling to hold down a place in Ernesto Valverde’s starting line up.

He has dropped below Ousmane Dembele in the pecking order and it has led Manchester United to make an enquiry about his services.

Barca are believed to be willing to sell Coutinho to fund a potential reunion for Neymar from Paris Saint-Germain who need to meet Financial Fair Play regulations.

Chelsea have been quoted around £100 million for Coutinho but haven’t baulked at the fee and are ready to rival United with their attempts to return him to the Premier League.

Coutinho has been in and out of the Barcelona team this season – only starting 10 La Liga games – but has been more involved of late.

He is determined to make things work in Spain but is believed to be open to a move in the summer should things fail to improve.

Coutinho has recently had a second child in Spain and likes the lifestyle and the city.

But he has struggled with the football side of things having dropped out of the team on occasions.

Ernesto Valverde has challenged him to improve and become a focal part of the team after he was signed to help replace Neymar and Andres Iniesta.

Dembele’s run of form has put him back in the team with Coutinho confined to the sidelines, but the Brazilian played in recent wins over Levante and Eibar, and is making a claim for a regular place.

Jurgen Klopp ruled out making a move for Coutinho when speaking yesterday after being asked about the situation.

“That is something I don’t want to talk about. I would not say it is a potential transfer or a likely one,” Klopp said.

“Nothing to say. Whatever I say would open more stories and there is no story.

“Phil is at Barcelona and as I know he fits really well and everything is fine.”

Meanwhile Chelsea are set to wrap up the signing of Gonzalo Higuain this weekend.

Barcelona news: Liverpool thought Philippe Coutinho would stay for two big reasons https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-liverpool-thought-philippe-coutinho-would-stay-for-two-big-reasons/ https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-liverpool-thought-philippe-coutinho-would-stay-for-two-big-reasons/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 20:26:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-liverpool-thought-philippe-coutinho-would-stay-for-two-big-reasons/

Liverpool lost Coutinho to Barcelona in January with the Brazilian moving to La Liga for a huge £142million.

However, that decision looks to have backfired after the La Liga giants lost 3-0 to Roma in the Champions League last night.

Coutinho watched on as Barcelona saw their European dreams dashed on a chastening night at the Stadio Olympico.

He no doubt felt even worse when he saw Liverpool had thumped Manchester City 5-1 on aggregate to reach the last four.

And the Liverpool Echo say the Reds thought Coutinho would stay for two big reasons.

Firstly, they thought he would not want to sit out Barcelona’s Champions League campaign.

Coutinho was a prominent figure as Liverpool battled their way out of the group stages.

However, his involvement for Jurgen Klopp’s team meant he was always going to be cup-tied for Barcelona.

And the Liverpool Echo say the Reds did not expect him to make that shock decision.

Also, they thought Barcelona’s La Liga dominance would see Coutinho stay.

Ernesto Valverde’s side were already soaring to the prize and, therefore, had no real need for Coutinho.

And Liverpool thought the fact their need for the player was greater would see him stay.

However, Coutinho ultimately chose to join Barcelona where he is yet to take the Nou Camp by storm.

Barcelona news: Lionel Messi delivers Philippe Coutinho concern to Luis Suarez – report https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-lionel-messi-delivers-philippe-coutinho-concern-to-luis-suarez-report/ https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-lionel-messi-delivers-philippe-coutinho-concern-to-luis-suarez-report/#respond Mon, 09 Apr 2018 18:42:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-lionel-messi-delivers-philippe-coutinho-concern-to-luis-suarez-report/

Coutinho finally got his dream move to Barcelona from Liverpool in January for a fee of £142million.

The Brazilian took time to bleed into the first team at the Nou Camp and he has only showed flashes of his brilliance thus far.

It was thought the midfielder was taken to Catalonia to be the long-term replacement for legend Andres Iniesta, who is expected to leave for China in the summer.

But according to Spanish outlet Don Balon, Messi does not think that Coutinho has enough quality to replicate the departing Spaniard.

Messi scored his 40th career hat-trick as he helped Ernesto Valverde’s side beat Leganes 3-1 at the weekend.

Coutinho registered an assist in the first half but his form dipped in the second period and he was substituted, despite being ineligible for the midweek Champions League trip to Roma.

Don Balon add that Messi tabled his concerns with Suarez, who is a good friend of his former Liverpool team-mate.

The Uruguayan was able to calm the Barca star’s fears and reassured him that the midfielder would come good next season, it is said.

Valverde has previously claimed that is will take time for Coutinho to reach his full potential in La Liga.

“Players aren’t machines that you can just put in a factory and start to work right away,” Valverde said.

“He has important skills, he’s growing into the team little by little.”

The 24-year-old left Anfield having almost helped lead Brendan Rodgers’ side to a first ever Premier League title.

Coutinho was still a young prodigy at the time with Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling and Gerrard creating a lethal partnership.

Suarez’s departure left a huge gaping hole in Liverpool’s front-line with Mario Balotelli and Rickie Lambert coming in as his replacement.

It didn’t work out for either striker on Merseyside, but one player who did step up in Suarez’s absence was Coutinho.

The Brazil international went on to establish himself as one of the world’s most feared attacking midfielders.

And he became Liverpool’s go-to talisman when Gerrard and Sterling left in 2015.

Coutinho has since rejoined up with Suarez at Barcelona having completed his £142million from Liverpool last month.

The Uruguay international has often spoke of his affection for his former club, and he has revealed how he kept a close eye on Coutinho’s performances.

“When the opportunity came up for me to come to Barcelona, I told Gerrard to look after [Coutinho] when I left,” Suarez told Barcelona’s official magazine.

“But then he moved to the Galaxy, so Philippe had to take responsibility himself and he put the team on his back.

“It didn’t surprise me to see him explode as a player because I knew the quality he had, but I admire the responsibility he took on at such a young age.”

Barcelona news: Lionel Messi and Philippe Coutinho friendship bothers Nou Camp team-mate https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-lionel-messi-and-philippe-coutinho-friendship-bothers-nou-camp-team-mate/ https://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-lionel-messi-and-philippe-coutinho-friendship-bothers-nou-camp-team-mate/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2018 08:07:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barcelona-news-lionel-messi-and-philippe-coutinho-friendship-bothers-nou-camp-team-mate/

That’s what Spanish outlet Diario Gol have claimed, with the Frenchman said to be furious he wasn’t utilised during the La Liga giants’ 2-0 win over Eibar yesterday.

Dembele joined Barcelona from Borussia Dortmund last summer in the wake of Neymar’s world-record move to Paris Saint-Germain.

But he’s not enjoyed the best of starts at the Nou Camp, with injuries limiting him to just five starts in all competitions this season.

Dembele’s hopes of breaking into Barcelona’s starting XI were hit last month when Ernesto Valverde signed Coutinho from Liverpool.

And the latest reports in Spain suggest the 20-year-old is unhappy about how quickly Coutinho has struck up a bond with Messi.

According to Diario Gol, Dembele was furious that he was not selected to start yesterday’s win against Eibar.

And that was apparently made worse when Coutinho was introduced instead of him after the break.

Coutinho’s introduction in Andres Iniesta’s place was not when Dembele’s anger peaked though.

Diario Gol indicate the winger boiled over when Aleix Vidal was subbed on instead of him for Paulinho.

Dembele’s poor performance against Getafe a couple of weeks ago has supposedly led to Valverde not trusting him.

Dembele allegedly believes he is being unnoticed and has pointed to Coutinho’s friendship with Messi and Luis Suarez as a sign of this.

Dembele is said to feel he has not received the same support as Coutinho and his friends are limited to compatriots Samuel Umtiti and Lucas Digne.

Philippe Coutinho risks Barcelona wrath after calls to rivals Real Madrid https://briefnews.eu/philippe-coutinho-risks-barcelona-wrath-after-calls-to-rivals-real-madrid/ https://briefnews.eu/philippe-coutinho-risks-barcelona-wrath-after-calls-to-rivals-real-madrid/#respond Tue, 09 Jan 2018 13:11:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/philippe-coutinho-risks-barcelona-wrath-after-calls-to-rivals-real-madrid/

Philippe Coutinho finalised his move to Barcelona this week, eventually putting pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal.

The La Liga leaders had been chasing Coutinho for months, having failed to bring him to the Nou Camp last summer.

dug in their heels, forcing Barca to break their transfer record with a £142million bid in order to secure a deal for the 25-year-old.

Despite the hefty fee, his arrival at Barca has been well received by supporters and his new team-mates alike.

However, Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Coutinho could have already put himself in his new club’s bad books by being too friendly with the mortal enemy – Real Madrid.

Coutinho is said to have been on the receiving end of calls and messages from Real’s Brazilian players.

The likes of Casemiro and Marcelo seem to have looked past their rivalry with Barca and have welcomed Coutinho with open arms.

Don Balon claim Real’s Brazil internationals have spoken with the former Anfield man and wished him well in La Liga.

And they have also insisted their club rivalry should not drive a wedge between them – which could cause a problem for some Barca fans.

Coutinho, however, clearly has his eyes firmly set on success with Barcelona and admitted this week moving to the Nou Camp was a dream come true.

“Hi fans, I am already here, it is a dream come true and I hope to see you tomorrow,” he said.

“It is incredible to know that I am going to live with idols, players with a lot of history,” he said.

“Footballers like Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, [Andres] Iniesta, [Gerard] Pique, [Sergio] Busquets.

“I am very happy to be able to live together, to be able to learn from them and be able to win together.”

And his new team-mate and fellow countryman Paulinho was equally delighted with the transfer and lauded the move after Barca’s 3-0 win over Levante.

When asked about the former Liverpool transfer, he replied: “Coutinho is a great player.

“I am sure that he will help us very much.

“The return of Ousmane Dembele is also very important for us as it’s a long season.

“And I am happy with the goals but happier for the three points.”

but is expected to be in action for Barca early next month.

Coutinho joined Liverpool five years ago from Inter Milan for just £8million and it was at Anfield where he established himself as one of the world’s best attacking midfielders.

He is now the second most expensive footballer of all time after making his “dream” move to the Nou Camp.

Liverpool supporters have been licking their wounds over the past few days trying to come to terms with the Brazil international leaving Anfield.

And some fans have expressed anger at Coutinho leaving halfway through the season.

But the 25-year-old has attempted to explain how much he owes Liverpool for being able to put him where he is today.

“Since the moment I arrived in Liverpool, me and my family have been made to feel so welcome and have made so many friends,” said Coutinho, in a message posted on his Instagram.

“On the pitch and off the pitch, we have experienced the beauty of this club and its fans. In turn, I hope I have delivered memories and moments that have brought happiness to the Liverpool supporters.

“Moving to Liverpool, I knew the club’s greatness and history but what I did learn during my time was the unique heart and soul of the place. It has its own personality and character.

“I leave Liverpool because Barcelona is a dream for me. Liverpool was a dream that I was fortunate enough to realise and I have given five years of my life to it.

“A career on the pitch only lasts for so long and to play for Barcelona as well as Liverpool is something I want to experience and enjoy while I am blessed enough to be able to do so.

“I hope the supporters understand that choosing to experience something new is not about diminishing their importance to me or the club’s importance. Nothing will ever diminish that in my heart.

“I wish Jürgen and the team nothing but joy and success for the rest of this season and beyond. This is an amazing team and they are getting better and better all the time.

“There are too many people I want to thank, but I cannot name everyone individually.

“To all the amazing club staff who have been part of my life in Liverpool – I will miss you.

“To the owners, whom have tried so hard to bring success, and to the football recruitment staff for showing faith in me to bring me here and rewarding me during that journey, and to my incredible team-mates, past and present, who have helped me grow and improve as a player and a person, I would like to say thank you to you all. Anything I have achieved here would not have been possible without you.”

“And finally, to the most important people of Liverpool – the Liverpool supporters. I can never thank you enough for what you have given me during this time and no matter where I go in the world, for the rest of my life, I will always cherish Liverpool in my heart. You, the club and the city will always be a part of me.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

“He was patient and that was the determining factor in bringing him here. I’m very happy to announce the signing of one of the stars of world football, we hope for a long time.

“Everyone knows him as a player. But what I can say is that it wasn’t easy to bring him here. But he wanted to be here and he’s part of the new project with Ernesto Valverde.

“He has a lot of family with him here today which everyone wanted and that’s what we’ve done to make it happen.

“I also want to thank Liverpool, one of your big clubs, for allowing him to leave and come here. We sat down and agreed and can now present him.”

12.58: Josep Maria Bartomeu revealed an insight into the deal.

“Everybody knows him as a player, we know about his professional career, but what I can say is that it wasn’t easy to bring him here. He wanted to be here and he’s part of this new project with [Ernesto] Valverde.

“I want to thank Liverpool, one of Europe’s biggest clubs, for allowing him to leave.”

Coutinho is being unveiled today after Barcelona agreed to pay Liverpool £142m.

He becomes the second-most expensive player of all time and the most in a transfer involving an English club.

Coutinho underwent his two medicals in Barcelona this morning and has now signed on the dotted line.

Madrid fear

10.00: Real Madrid are worried Barcelona will be unstoppable if they sign Antoine Griezmann as well as Philippe Coutinho.

Barcelona have agreed to make Coutinho the second-most expensive player in the world and will unveil him this afternoon.

He joins for £142m from Liverpool and could make his debut as soon as Thursday.

And Madrid fear falling further behind Barca if they make Griezmann their next signing.

Madrid slipped 16 points back for the La Liga leaders yesterday with a draw against Celta Vigo.

Zinedine Zidane was so furious with his team he kept them locked in the dressing room and missed his media duties.

But the big fear in Madrid is how Barcelona’s new-look side are taking shape.

Barcelona looked a mess in the summer with Neymar leaving for PSG and their top targets proving unavailable.

Ousmane Dembele was signed but Coutinho and Marco Verratti stayed where they were.

But Barca finally struck gold on the Coutinho deal this month and have made progress in their pursuit of Griezmann.

And Diario Gol claim that has got Madrid worried.

Messi slams Dembele

09.50: Lionel Messi has reportedly let rip at Ousmane Dembele following his performance in Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Levante.

Spanish outlet Don Balon claim Messi was far from impressed with the Frenchman’s performance and told him so in the dressing room after the match.

The report says he urged the Frenchman to pick up his game and to improve his link-up play with himself and Luis Suarez.

The 20-year-old also looked off the boil in the 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo in the cup in midweek and is clearly lacking match sharpness.

Speaking about his four-month injury lay-off in November, Dembele admitted it would be difficult for him to get back into the Barca team.

“It’ll be very difficult due to the amount of training I’ll have to do but I’ll be working extremely hard every single day to get back as soon as possible,” he said.

Goretzka decision

08.45: Leon Goretzka has been told to make his mind up.

The Schalke winger has been linked with Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Manchester United and Barcelona.

And Schalke’s supervisory director Clemens Tonnies has urged him for a decision.

“We’ve done everything to ensure he stays,” Tonnies told Welt am Sonntag

“In January, he wants to say what he’s doing. Schalke have accepted the financial conditions of Leon and his management.

“He was also important for the sporting development of the team last summer and, after the first half of the season, we’re in second place and in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal.

“Leon can and must decide now.”

Mascherano exit looms

08.05: Barcelona star Javier Mascherano has played his last game at the Nou Camp ahead of a big-money move to China, according to reports.

Spanish outlet Don Balon claim the Argentina international played his last match for the  Catalan side at the Nou Camp on Sunday in the 3-0 win over Levante.

The former Liverpool man has reportedly made it clear to his team-mates he will soon be departing to the Far East.

The report says his decision is based on a lack of game time as he does not expect to displace Gerard Pique and Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of Barca’s defence.

And he is determined to make the Argentina squad for the World Cup in Russia this summer and thinks a move will help.

Liverpool loan deal for Coutinho

07:00: Philippe Coutinho will officially be unveiled as a Barcelona player later today, but Liverpool made one final attempt to keep him at Anfield until the end of the season, according to reports.

One key consequence of him leaving this month means he will not be able to play in the Champions League for the remainder of the season, a decision which has confused many former footballers.

And it was one reason why Liverpool attempted to push through a deal which would see the 25-year-old stay on Merseyside on loan until the end of the campaign.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who claim Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group were desperate to keep the midfielder.

Barcelona rejected the option of a short-team loan deal back to Liverpool with Coutinho keen to begin a new chapter of his career.

Griezmann transfer decision

06:30: Antoine Griezmann has reportedly told Atletico Madrid he wants to join Manchester United over Barcelona, but on one condition.

The Sun claim Griezmann still has his hearts set on a move to Old Trafford.

But their initial wage offer of £290,000-a-week falls short of the incredible money Griezmann wants to complete a deal.

It is said he wants to be earning £400,000-a-week after seeing the transfer market prices sky-rocket.

Messi makes Coutinho demand

06:00: Barcelona star Lionel Messi wants Ousmane Dembele dropped following the club’s signing of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool, according to reports.

Barcelona have finally signed Coutinho, luring the Brazil international away from Liverpool for a huge £142million fee.

It means manager Ernesto Valverde is facing a huge selection dilemma with the club now in possession of one of football’s greatest attacking arsenals.

However, Spanish website Diario Gol claims Messi thinks he knows the solution to Barcelona’s problems.

And that is because the 30-year-old reportedly wants Dembele to be dropped for Coutinho when the latter is fit.

La Liga leaders Barcelona struck the agreement to finally sign Coutinho on Saturday afternoon and he quickly jetted to Spain to complete proceedings.

Both clubs have now announced the deal but Coutinho must still go through the formalities of the medical and agree personal terms.

But there is not expected to be any issues with either and he will be officially unveiled today.

Marca have suggested he will sign the contract today alongside president Josep Bartomeu before the unveiling at the Nou Camp and a press conference.

But Coutinho has already spoken Barcelona’s in house TV company.

“I’m very happy, very happy,” Coutinho, who watched Barcelona’s 3-0 league victory over Levante at the Nou Camp, told Barca TV.

“I have always said that it is a dream that I am living and I am very happy to be here.

“To be able to play, win titles, make the fans happy… always play with joy. It is incredible to know that I am going to live with idols, players with a lot of history.

“Footballers like Leo Messi, Luis Suarez, (Andres) Iniesta, (Gerard) Pique, (Sergio) Busquets. I am very happy to be able to live together, to be able to learn from them and be able to win together.”

Coutinho will sign a five-and-a-half year deal and become the world’s second-most expensive player.

The 25-year-old watched Barcelona’s 3-0 win over Levante at the Nou Camp on Sunday and could make his debut against Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Barca had targeted Coutinho in the summer but saw three bids rejected by Liverpool even after he had submitted a transfer request but they decided to come back in for him this month.

And Coutinho managed to finally get his dream move after making it clear to Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp his heart was set.
