Commentator Andrew Pierce noted that writer Gyles Brandreth was aware of Prince Philip’s feelings towards Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s interview. While speaking on Good Morning Britain (GMB) Mr Pierce insisted Prince Philip was not hostile towards the couple. He claimed Prince Philip thought Prince Harry was a good man and was fine with his decision to step down as a senior royal.

According to Mr Brandreth, Prince Philip was hopeful the pair would talk about other important issues due to their platform.

Mr Pierce said: “You would think Prince Philip would be raging about this interview.

“But Gyles Brandreth has known Prince Philip for 40 years, they worked together in the playing fields association.

“He wrote a fantastic book about Prince Philip and the Queen’s marriage and he had great access to them.

“He said Prince Philip was okay about Prince Harry going away, he has got to lead his own life.”

Mr Pierce explained how Prince Philip felt about the interview between Meghan, Harry and Oprah.

He said: “Prince Philip said he was a good man and of the interview what he said was, I don’t think they should be talking about themselves all the time.

Prince Harry is expected to be at Prince Philip’s funeral on Saturday as the Duke is reported to be in the UK quarantining

Due to being pregnant, Meghan Markle will not be joining her husband as she was reported not have been given the green light from her doctors to travel.

Tensions have been high between Prince Harry and the Royal Family, especially brother Prince William, following his interview with Oprah Winfrey.

However, the Dukes are expected to put aside their differences and walk side by side during the funeral.

“Turned on Mark Radcliffe on 6 Music. Three hours of dirges in store. Turns off radio,” another remarked.

A third added: “6music only playing ballads and chill out music this morning, and poor Mark Radcliffe forced to talk like a vicar at a funeral. When is this going to end!!!!!”

“Continuous stream of sombre tracks with no DJ speaking. Hopefully some sanity returns soon,” someone else shared.

A fifth wrote: “OK @BBC6Music that’s enough, you can let Mark Radcliffe go, he’s done nothing wrong.”

“Having said that they’ve already said, firstly, that they didn’t think it works with the older population and now they’re saying that there are health issues which have been disputed.

“This is a bit of a shambles isn’t it?” Nick and Camilla then gave their opinions on this story.

Nick replied: “It is political, they’re hiding that behind health, it is wholly irresponsible, they are putting the lives of their citizens at risk.”

April’s supply of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is said to be reduced partly because of a delay in a delivery from India of five million doses the BBC said.

Dabbing at his eyes with a tissue, David joked: “These are not tears of sadness, they’re tears of joy.”

Going on to mock the Royal Family, the comedian laughed: “Even the closest members have had to stay away two metres away from.

The Crown Adds Jonathan Pryce to Play Prince Philip in Seasons 5 and 6 https://briefnews.eu/the-crown-adds-jonathan-pryce-to-play-prince-philip-in-seasons-5-and-6/ https://briefnews.eu/the-crown-adds-jonathan-pryce-to-play-prince-philip-in-seasons-5-and-6/#respond Wed, 12 Aug 2020 23:01:46 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-crown-adds-jonathan-pryce-to-play-prince-philip-in-seasons-5-and-6/

The Crown has found its new prince: Game of Thrones veteran Jonathan Pryce will play Queen Elizabeth II’s husband Prince Philip in the Netflix drama’s upcoming fifth and sixth seasons, our sister site Deadline reports.

Pryce takes over the role from Tobias Menzies, who played the role in last year’s Season 3 and will return as Philip alongside Olivia Colman in the upcoming Season 4, due to hit Netflix later this year. (Menzies took over for Matt Smith, who played Philip opposite Claire Foy in The Crown‘s first two seasons.)

Pryce joins Imelda Staunton, who’s set to play Elizabeth, and Lesley Manville, who’ll take over the role of Princess Margaret, in the drama’s fifth and sixth seasons, which will cover the latter days of the UK monarch’s reign as Great Britain enters the 21st century. Netflix originally announced The Crown would end after five seasons, but changed its mind and confirmed a sixth season back in July. Season 5, which will mark Pryce’s debut along with Staunton’s and Manville’s, won’t premiere until 2022.

Best known for his work in movies like Brazil, Glengarry Glen Ross and The Two Popes — which earned him an Oscar nomination earlier this year — Pryce also played fanatical religious leader the High Sparrow on HBO’s Game of Thrones, appearing in 12 episodes across Seasons 5 and 6. His other TV credits include Taboo, Wolf Hall and Return to Cranford.

However, as the pair got chatting about Phillip’s wing walk, the presenter explained the surprise Duke of Edinburgh had in store for him.

The host continued: “As I told him I’d done the wing walk we chatted about that for a bit, someone said to me in the crew, ‘he’s beckoning you over’”

Phillip explained how the prince had gone onto add: “’I wanted to introduce you to this man. He’s jumping out of it [a plane], you’re walking on top of it,

“‘Thought it’d introduce 2 idiots together,’” Phillip recalled as he burst into laughter at the past events.

Fake or Fortune: ‘That’s harsh’ Fiona Bruce disagrees with Philip in awkward stand-off https://briefnews.eu/fake-or-fortune-thats-harsh-fiona-bruce-disagrees-with-philip-in-awkward-stand-off/ https://briefnews.eu/fake-or-fortune-thats-harsh-fiona-bruce-disagrees-with-philip-in-awkward-stand-off/#respond Fri, 02 Aug 2019 03:12:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fake-or-fortune-thats-harsh-fiona-bruce-disagrees-with-philip-in-awkward-stand-off/

Tonight’s instalment of the art programme saw Antiques Roadshow presenter Fiona Bruce diving deep into another mystery around an unusual and impressive painting on the BBC.

The sleuthing continued throughout as the presenters continued to get closer and closer to the truth around who actually painted the portrait.

The group speculated that due to the brush strokes, style and technique the artist was actually Thomas Lawrence.

However the painting was labelled under later painter Maria Cosway, prompting much confusion.

The painting belongs to Hugh and Mirabel Cecil, whom Philip Mould was visiting one day when he spotted the majestic painting hanging in their home.

Immediately commenting on the exceptional work by Lawrence, he was quickly told it had been passed down through the family and was actually painted by Conway.

In one scene Fiona, Philip and Miracle all visited Chatsworth House to examine another Conway painting of Georgiana, the Duchess of Devonshire.

Miracle was convinced there were great similarities between her work and her own painting, but Philip was determined to prove otherwise.

“That’s amazing,” Fiona declared at the breath-taking sight, as Philip noted Cosway had depicted the Duchess as a Greek Goddess.

“It’s so dramatic, it’s like she’s hurtling out of the heavens towards us,” Fiona then said, continuing to experience the piece.

“Actually, which to be fair is probably what she’s literally doing because this is Diana the Huntress, she had a soft spot Maria Conway, for the dressing up box,” Philip went on, and Fiona joked: “I mean not bad, if you wanted to be preserved Mirabel as a goddess hurtling out of the sky, is pretty good. I love it, I have to say.”

But Philip was keen to put a halt to the niceties, and he got down to business.

“Unfortunately this portrait is damaged,” he said. “The paint is badly cracked, resulting in the leathery finish. But can we see through this to compare it to Peniston Lamb?

“The all important technique is radically different to yours,” he offered to Mirabel. “I mean look at the way the drapery is done, particularly top right, you’ve got that flowing piece of robe, half-hair, half-rags, half-something.”

Balking at her co-host’s biting comments, Fiona hit back immediately.

“That’s a bit harsh,” she cried. “It’s not that bad. I mean it’s just a sort of gauzy material isn’t it?” the presenter then attempted to correct.

“Well it is, but this worries me in a way that yours [Mirabel] doesn’t,” Philip countered, not letting go. “The way that that neck-tie in that Serpentine way goes round Peniston’s neck…”

Mirabel continued to fight for her “family” artwork, feeling particularly protective of its perceived history as a Lawrence piece.

“But in a way you’re comparing chalk with cheese because one is an actual portrait of a person the other is a goddess literally hurtling out of space,” she said. “Well it’s very glamorous and Peniston is very glamorous. The colour of the cheeks, the sparkle in the eye, the half-open mouth. Very lively gaze. Background of the Peniston is so lowering with the storm clouds and this is a sort of comparable palette.”

“It’s a very dramatic sky that’s for sure,” Fiona giggled, and Philip realised the owner still needed more “convincing”.

Yet as the episode came to a close and the presenters had spent hours poring over historical documents, the received proof the painting was done by Lawrence, and would therefore be worth a lot more money in auction.

Fake of Fortune continues Thursdays at 9pm on BBC One.

Royal Travel: The Queen does not sit by Prince Philip during flights – here’s why https://briefnews.eu/royal-travel-the-queen-does-not-sit-by-prince-philip-during-flights-heres-why/ https://briefnews.eu/royal-travel-the-queen-does-not-sit-by-prince-philip-during-flights-heres-why/#respond Tue, 29 Jan 2019 22:59:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/royal-travel-the-queen-does-not-sit-by-prince-philip-during-flights-heres-why/

The Queen’s official excursions have seen Elizabeth II travel across the globe, to more than 120 countries, since the age of 21. Now 92, the UK monarch is considered paramount in the maintenance of national relations between states, diplomacy and sometimes, a peace broker. She is often accompanied by other members of the royal family on her duties, yet this saw a shift after her husband, Prince Philip, retired from official duties. The Duke of Edinburgh’s decision, in 2017, meant he would no longer be by the side of his wife if she ventured abroad on state trips.

Yet an unusual travel quirk of the married couple, parents to first in line to the throne Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, has now been revealed.

Royal biographer Robert Hardman has opened up on how their travel plans are sometimes not totally in sync.

In his new book, Queen of the World, he told how they would never sit next to each other on long-haul flights.

He wrote of Prince Philip, 97: “For most of his life, however, his role has been that of the Royal Family’s (and the world’s) longest serving supporting act, always walking two paces behind his wife.

“Jack Straw was struck by the fact that, on a long flight, the Duke would sit in the row of seats behind the Queen, too.”

His actions could have been a matter of respect or, as Robert went on to outline, because of the Queen’s large entourage.

Opening up further on their travel plans, Robert added of the Queen’s husband, who was recently involved in a car crash near to his home: “He would also help keep the rest of the entourage alert, even if he was not wholly convinced of their reason for being there.

“’His temper could keep things cracking along quite nicely,’ recalled a former member of the Royal household.

“’Because when the Duke went travelling on his own, it would just be him and a policeman and a private secretary.

“So on these tours he’d come in and see all these dressers and footmen and so on. ‘What are all these people doing here?’ He would say.”

Meanwhile, Prince Philip’s lack of presence beside the Queen on-board an aircraft is particularly surprising, after her flight confession came to light.

While the UK monarch takes on her duties abroad with a smile, a hidden fear of travel has been revealed.

The monarch does not reportedly enjoy the process of travelling to far-flung destinations, according to royal biographer Robert.

He told how Prince Harry’s grandmother is “famously stoical” about the dangers of royal life while on excursions.

He added: “However, she (the Queen) has never been a great fan of air travel.

“If St Christopher, the patron saint of travellers, can afford any extra protection then so much the better.”

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip never do this one thing when they travel https://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-and-prince-philip-never-do-this-one-thing-when-they-travel/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-and-prince-philip-never-do-this-one-thing-when-they-travel/#respond Fri, 04 Jan 2019 07:54:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/queen-elizabeth-ii-and-prince-philip-never-do-this-one-thing-when-they-travel/

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip have been married for 72 years and have enjoyed plenty of travel together. However, when they go away they opt for a particular arrangement when it comes to their bedrooms, a royal expert has said. When they are away – just as when they are at home – the royal couple do not share the same bed. Writer Brian Hoey revealed in his book ‘Not in Font of the Corgis’ that Elizabeth and Philip had separate cabins when they travelled on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

In fact, there were no double beds anywhere on the boat at all due to the royals’ preferences.

Hoey explained that when the Britannia was used for royal honeymoons, single beds would have to be roped together by the crew.

There are various reasons behind this sleeping arrangement, according to Hoey.

One of these is that many couples of Elizabeth and Philip’s generation and class don’t share a bed at all times.

Another explanation is due to their bedding preferences. “The Queen likes a longer turn-back on her sheets and blankets and lace trimming on her pillowcases; Prince Philip does not,” Hoey wrote in the book.

Philip allegedly “sleeps wide open whatever the weather temperature. He has never used a hot water bottle in his life.”

The Prince is also an early riser so doesn’t wish to disturb his wife in the morning.

Separate beds are far from the only thing Queen Elizabeth demands when she goes away.

She has particular requests when it comes to food. A royal expert has revealed that foreign chefs are given instructions by The Master of the Household department.

Telegraph reporter Gordon Rayner, who has attended 20 royal tours, said they are told not to cook anything with garlic as the Queen won’t eat it.

This strict rule is to avoid giving the Queen bad breath as she will have to greet a number of important people during royal tours.

The same restriction applies to spice. “The Master of the Household department will be in the reconnaissance party to tell foreign chefs not to cook anything with garlic or too much spice for fear of giving the Queen bad breath,” Rayner wrote in The Telegraph.

Staff are not always happy with royal demands, however. When they travel on long-haul flights they have to arrive in their Sunday best clothes and then change into more comfortable apparel in the tiny toilet of the plane, revealed Hoey.

The royal expert revealed there was one episode in particular where annoyance came to the fore.

“On one flight to Australia, there was a long queue immediately after take-off when the Mistress of the Robes, the Duchess of Grafton, pushed her way to the front, claiming senior priority,” Hoey wrote in his book.

“One self-identified gay footman, well down the line, exclaimed in a tone everyone could hear ‘Well, that’s the first time I’ve ever known a Duchess take precedence over a queen’.”

However, the Mistress of the Robes pretended not to hear and carried on to the bathroom.
