It’s been a long 16 months since Colin Guinn and Christie Woods were crowned the victors of the last Amazing Race, but the wait for the next globetrotting relay is finally over.

On Wednesday, October 14 (at 9/8c on CBS), host Phil Keoghan kicks off a brand new circuit, as 11 fresh duos take off from the legendary Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles en route toward an exciting race around the world. And if the thrill of exploring the globe with a loved one isn’t enough, the $ 1 million prize should certainly motivate them!

Among those jockeying for that hefty paycheck are former NFL stars DeAngelo Williams and Gary Barnidge, Olympians Kellie Wells-Brinkley and LaVonne Idlette, and pro volleyball players Riley and Maddison McKibbin. (View the complete list of teams here.)

Ahead of the premiere’s starting gun, we spoke to Keoghan about the challenges that lie ahead for the racers, the beauty of watching the Race during a pandemic and what he believes is “the core of what Race is about.”

TVLINE | Congratulations on racing a million miles around the world. What a milestone!
I was trying to put it into perspective, so I Googled and saw that going to the moon is 230-something-thousand miles. So it’s like going to the moon and back twice!

The million miles rolled up while we were flying over the Amazon in the middle of the night, and to be honest with you, there was no official celebration because we were all so tired. It’s only since we got back that we’ve put the whole thing into perspective and realized, wow, this show has been going that long! It’s incredible.

TVLINE | This season is premiering at a very unique time. Not many people are traveling at all, let alone leaving the country. Have you given any thought to the fact that viewers will be living vicariously through the Race this season?
I think you hit the nail on the head. I haven’t been on a plane since we were sent home from shooting The Amazing Race 33. It’s the longest I’ve ever been in one place in my entire career. But it’s not just me of course, the entire world is shut down. It’s an opportunity for us to give people the ability to vicariously travel the world. People can sit in a comfortable chair in the safety of their homes and jet away, looking at a time before COVID. We’re hoping this is true escapism for our fans.

TVLINE | What do the racers have ahead of them in the premiere episode?
The beginning of this season is extremely difficult. We left L.A., flew to Trinidad, then off the plane, the teams are right into the challenges that night. Then, we head off to Tobago, a beautiful little island that’s like a sister island to Trinidad. From there we head to South America, and that’s where we get right into the heart of the Amazon, where there are still indigenous tribes living along the river banks, living off the land.

I’m really excited about us getting to the Caribbean. I grew up in Antigua for eight years as a kid. I just love the Caribbean culture. I love steel drums, cricket, the beaches, the people, the food. Particularly, like in Trinidad, the food has such a mix of culture, of Indian, South American and African influence, so it’s really a wonderful melting pot.

TVLINE | Was there a particular country or road block that proved most difficult this season?
The biggest hurdle is just coping with the extreme changes [the contestants] face every single day because they don’t know where they’re going or what they’re doing. When you’re going from a tropical island to the middle of a jungle to a freezing cold country like Kazakhstan in the winter, the challenge is just the extremes. They’re literally going from the furnace to the freezer in a 24-hour period, jetlagged. Twelve shows in 24 days does weird things to the mind and it really is the complete opposite experience from a stage show set in a studio somewhere. What we’re actually doing to our contestants is pushing them to the absolute limits.

We have a couple professional athletes, but that’s not a ticket for winning this race. Just because you are hyper-competitive like Jerry, who’s played in the NBA and is used to competing at a very high level, that does not automatically qualify you to make it into the Final 3 or win this race.

TVLINE | Season 31 introduced us to the U-Turn Vote. Will there be any new twists to the game this season?
We pride ourselves in casting diversity on our show. We want to see all skin colors, all different backgrounds, different sexual preferences, people who are in love, siblings, father-son relationships… that’s really the key to what makes this show work. Adding twists and turns is one thing, but ultimately the show works because of new places and amazing people. That’s what separates one season from another. We don’t have to jump the shark because we have everything we need to make it new and different. We could add all kinds of craziness to the show but ultimately, I don’t think that’s what the fans turn up for. Amazing people, going to amazing places, doing amazing things. That’s the core of what Race is about.

TVLINE | Day 1, at the starting mat, which teams did you think were the ones to watch out for?
The Amazing Race Season 32 Jerry FrankThere’s a group of us in production that does a little $ 1 bet. We all throw a dollar in a hat, and none of us have ever been 100 percent right, which I think speaks to the fact that there are so many variables on the show. But to me, when I look out at the cast in front of me, I’m looking at the dynamics I want to watch. Meaning, I want them to stay because I want to see that relationship grow and see what happens to it. The one relationship I was most keen to watch was Jerry and Frank, the father and son, because I have a very strong relationship with my dad. They’ve got some things they want to sort out. For Frank, he felt like he could never live up to his dad’s expectations. He’s a high achiever, so he’s vying for his dad’s attention like most sons do.

I also have a close connection with my sister, so I love Aparna and Eswar. I love that dynamic where one is taking more of a leadership role. But sometimes, that can turn on the Race.

When you look at Kaylynn and Haley — who have really come up through the school of hard knocks, and as teenagers, really struggled to be super independent at a very early age — you maybe think, “Two beautiful young women, how tough could they be? How savvy are they?” You never want to judge a book by its cover in life, and that, to me, speaks to what The Amazing Race is all about.

Then you look at Michelle and Victoria. They’re very spicy, particularly Michelle who speaks her mind and doesn’t hold back. I love people who have no filter!

TVLINE | Before I let you go, you were in production for Season 33 when COVID-19 hit. Is there any update on when that might resume?
There are just so many unknowns. Our Number 1 priority is the safety of the cast, so until we can guarantee everyone’s safety, we won’t be going. That’s why we headed home in the first place. We worry about all of them, it’s our Number 1 concern. I don’t worry about the cast doing any of our challenges, I worry more about the real-world influences, and in this case, it happens to be COVID. I would hope that in early 2021 we’re in a place where maybe we have a much better idea, because we’re all itching to get back out, and so are our fans.

A BBC insider said: “The show has been on for a long time and the producers think it’s time to give it a new look.

“Sue, Matt and Tuffers have been so popular, so the producers are aware they will have big shoes to fill.

“With the 50th anniversary this year they thought it would be a good time to revamp things,” the source told Daily Star.

Former professional tennis player Sue took over as presenter from commentator David Coleman in 1997 who had replaced David Vine in 1979.

The first episode of the long-running quiz show was broadcast in 1970 and has only ever had three hosts in its 50 years on TV.

But instead of referring to the travel company Love Holidays, Phillip made an embarrassing blunder.

“If Lovehoney said,” Phillip said before realising his mistake. “Love Holidays, Lovehoney, that’s a whole different package coming through the door.”

“It’s a different package holiday,” he said as Holly burst out laughing and added: “Totally different.”

Phillip asked: “Rebecca, if Love Holidays said you could go to another hotel, would you be happy with that?”

As Holly continued to find the slip-up amusing, Rebecca revealed she wouldn’t be pleased with that option.

The ITV show sees fans hope to take on the Spin To Win wheel every day as one lucky viewer receives at least £500 plus the opportunity to win the infamous goodie bag, just by calling into the show. As ever with live TV, things don’t always go to plan and on today’s This Morning, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield grew frustrated after multiple viewers failed to give the correct passphrase, or pick up the phone at all. 

Fans can win up to £3,000 on the game, which is free to enter, with many calling in to give them a shot at winning the cash prize. 

However, the rules of the game mean when the hosts call a contestant, they must answer with the correct phrase, which is given on the This Morning app. 

Today’s game saw Holly and Phil nearly give up altogether after they called six members of the public, with none of them giving them the answer they needed. 

As they dialled through the numbers, it became increasingly clear the pair might have to cut off the segment, with Phil noting: “This might be our first abandonment.”

Holly jokingly asked whether the nation was still in lockdown due to the lack of response as the segment became painful viewing.

Phil remarked: “I’m losing the will to live slowly on the television,” as the duo couldn’t understand why nobody had managed to answer correctly.

“This is great telly this, the best telly ever,” added the host, with Holly asking: “Should I just practice spinning the wheel for a while?”

After call number six was unsuccessful, the pair wondered whether they should scrap today’s competition, with Phil questioning: “Should we just leave it?”

 

“We’re very over on time,” said the host but Holly stepped in, remarking: “Not sure that’s allowed.”

The contestant was asked: “Whose 60th birthday did we celebrate earlier on in the show?” with Reece correctly responding with “Bradley Walsh.”

This meant he also won the This Morning goodie bag, with Phil telling the player: “You’ve saved our bacon, it would’ve been the first one we’d abandoned. There’s no one left to dial, I don’t think!”

Reminding viewers of the rules ahead of tomorrow’s edition, Holly added: “Make sure you’re in and don’t say hello!”

Viewers were left baffled by the competition and called for it to end, with one writing on Twitter: “How are these people entering a TV comp where you have to pick up a phone and then they’re not ready for the ring? CRACKERS! Keep dancing Holly #ThisMorning.”

Another added: “#ThisMorning they need a new game. Spin to Win is a disaster.”

A third said: “It’s been six months since #ThisMorning brought out Spin to Win. You would have thought that people would have understood the f*****g rules by now!”

“#ThisMorning please stop the spin to win game. I feel like I’m hanging on the phone to a call centre #watchingpaintdryTV,” remarked another.

After two years away, Lisa Fowler (played by Lucy Benjamin) returns to Albert Square to ask for help from her best friend Mel Owen (Tamzin Outhwaite).

Mel is currently trying to cope with the sudden arrival of her fugitive son, Hunter Owen (Charlie Winter) who is on the run from the police.

When Mel sees Lisa she’s pleased to see her friend but is concerned by what she has to say.

Lisa’s daughter, Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) and Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters) fled Walford earlier this month.

Now, Lisa has suddenly arrived in the Square and wants Mel’s help to get Keanu out of the country.

However, it isn’t long before news of her arrival spreads and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) wants answers.

Phil and Lisa have famously rocky history as the timid market inspector suffered a breakdown because of her relationship with the Mitchell hard man.

In 2001, Lisa was revealed as the person who pulled the trigger in the infamous storyline ‘Who Shot Phil?’

But with Lisa back on the scene without Louise in sight, could she be about to deliver some hard home truths to Phil?

In teaser images, Phil can be seen confronting Lisa as to the real reason she’s back in Walford.

Does Lisa know where Louise is hiding, and will she tell Phil the truth?

Meanwhile the latest trailer dropped by EastEnders suggests Hunter may be about to kill again.

The clip teases at an explosive week for the Walford residents as Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) and Callum Highway (Tony Clay) prepare for their wedding.

Hunter has come home to seek help from mum Mel but it looks like he might have unfinished business on the Square.

In the clip, Hunter breaks into Denise Fox’s (Diane Parish) house.

Hunter takes Denise by surprise and it’s obvious he has something to get off his chest.

Later in the clip, an unknown assailant is seen handling a gun.

The young fugitive has made it clear how angry he is at Jack Branning (Scott Malsen) for the role he played in his arrest.

Despite Denise calling things off between the pair, Jack still cares for his former partner.

Could Hunter be planning on killing Denise to get revenge on Jack?

EastEnders dropped its shocking summer trailer earlier today and it has been hinted Phil (played by Steve McFadden) could cheat on wife Sharon (Letitia Dean).

Sharon has been playing away with Keanu (Danny Walters) who is also dating Phil’s daughter Louise (Tilly Keeper).

Louise is expecting the mechanic’s baby and Sharon is expected to find out she too is having a baby in coming weeks.

Phil tells Shirley: “Welcome aboard,” hinting they are making a deal. The pair have already enjoyed a romance in the past but split in 2014.

Could Sharon’s betrayal lead to sparks flying behind the former flames?

Meanwhile, it looks like Phil will learn the truth about Keanu and Sharon and it won’t go down well.

The hardman is pictured looking devastated as he looks at a laptop with Sharon lurking in the background wearing a very worried expression.

Later, Sharon is seen breaking down in tears and screaming. She is also seen attacking Keanu’s mother Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley).

Is this a big hint Karen will expose Sharon and Keanu’s affair as she tries to work out what is best for her son?

Unfortunately it seems Keanu will end up in hot water anyway as he appears to have been kidnapped and blindfolded.

The mechanic also looks badly beaten up – has Phil taken him as revenge?

In other EastEnders news, it looks like Honey Mitchell (Emma Barton) could reunite with Billy Mitchell (Perry Fenwick).

Honey is currently in love with Adam Bateman (Stephen Rahman-Hughes) but the dentist has been cheating on her with Habiba Ahmed (Rukku Nahar).

Billy spotted the pair kissing and has tried to warn his estranged wife but she wasn’t interested in listening to him.

Fans have since seen Honey move in with Adam leaving Habiba heartbroken. But the pair have decided to continue with their tryst.

With Billy set on exposing Adam, just how far will he go to reveal the truth about the affair?

Could he enlist the help of Habiba who clearly wants Adam to herself?

Woods made a triumphant comeback on the PGA Tour this season after several months out with back problems.

By his own high standards, Mickelson’s level has dipped this year.

The 48-year-old won just once on the PGA Tour in 2018 and his world ranking dropped to 24.

Nevertheless, the interest in Tiger vs Phil is high.

Bookmaker Coral has Woods odds-on at 4-9 to win. While Mickelson is available at 13-8.

“They are two of the biggest names in the history of the game and as a result this is an exhibition match which has really caught the attention of punters who have been backing Tiger to beat his rival ever since this exhibition match was announced,” said Coral’s John Hill.

Justin Thomas says there is “zero-per cent chance” he would be watching.

While Rory McIlroy said: “Fifteen years ago it would have been great, but I think nowadays, it missed the mark a little bit.”
