Warning: spoilers ahead for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The character, played by Gwendoline Christie, managed to dodge death in Episode 7: The Force Awakens – but it’ll be miraculous if the same happens again.

In the finished theatrical edit of the film, Phasma had very brief screen-time, before appearing to be finished off by Finn (John Boyega) following a brief fight.

But a deleted scene, revealed on The Star Wars Show, sees her falling down to another platform, where she is joined by Finn and a group of stormtroopers.

Finn then reveals, in front of said stormtroopers, that Phasma was instrumental in the destruction of Starkiller Base, because she surrendered vital information.

In fear of the stormtroopers turning on her, Phasma makes the snap decision to shoot them all, before aiming for Finn once again.

It’s here that they have the “Scum”/“Rebel scum” exchange seen in the finished edit, before Finn blasts her with a cannon.

So it seems Phasma really is done for.

In an interview earlier this year, Christie expressed her disappointment at leaving the franchise – as she will presumably now not appear in Episode 9.

“In truth, I don’t know [about a return],” she told The Times.

“And that scares and upsets me because I really want to see this character explored. I’m actually very invested in the character now.”

She added: “And that’s genuine. That’s not just chat.

“It has opened up a chain of stories and events in my mind about who Phasma is.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on Blu-ray and DVD on April 9.

The Gwendoline Christie stormtrooper, who was chucked down a trash compactor at the end of Episode 7, made only a small appearance in The Last Jedi.

Warning: spoilers ahead.

Christie’s character appears for the first time very late in the film, when she meets and clashes with Finn (John Boyega).

The two battle, and it’s not long before she is given a spectacular, fiery death.

Johnson told IGN: “I mean, as you can see, man, we had a really full movie already.

“We had a big, big movie with a lot of characters we were trying to serve, and the God’s honest truth is, every character had to find their natural place.

“Phasma supports Finn’s storyline, obviously… and until she shows up to fight him at the end, look through the story that we have, there’s just not a lot of space to go into a big Phasma storyline in it.”

He added: “The truth is, it’s just a very big cast and you have to kind of pick your battles with it.”

The Last Jedi has been an enormous box office success, and also ranked very highly amongst critics.

It has split audiences, however, with Johnson having to fend off backlash over some plot elements.

The featurette lifts the lid on the gruelling process the actors had to go for in order to be ready for some of the most intense scenes in Episode 8: The Last Jedi.

In addition to Ridley (Rey) and Boyega (Finn), we also see Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), Adam Driver (Kylo Ren) and Kelly Marie Tran (Rose) in training.

Rian Johnson teased: “Daisy is training for a moment where she is on the islands, she has a moment to herself and she’s practising with her staff.

“Then she realises, ‘why am I wasting my time practising with a staff,  I have Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber in my satchel.

“Its just working out the moves for that.”

Christie admitted: “This is the hardest physical thing I’ve done yet – the suit can be very restrictive just to move in, just to walk in.”

Driver added: ”It’s rigorous, in a great way.

“You can’t half-ass it.”

The Last Jedi is now less than two weeks away from release in the UK, where it is expected to land with an enormous opening box office haul.

Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Laura Dern, Oscar Isaac and Benicio Del Torro are also among the stars.

In trailers and TV spots, the two characters have been seen going head-to-head – and Boyega has promised that the clash will deliver.

Speaking on US TV show Live With Kelly And Ryan, the British actor was asked what the most “epic scene” in Episode 8 is.

“It would be fighting Captain Phasma, played by Gwendoline Christie,” he declared.

And it seems that Christie needed little help from stunt doubles.

Boyega added: “She can fight, you know?

“I had takes where I was like, ‘we’re cool, right?’”

Boyega is the second Star Wars actor in as many days to appear on the show, after Daisy Ridley (Rey) stopped by yesterday.

She was asked about the Royal Engagement between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle – after she met the former on the set of the movie.

In a separate interview, she also recalled an awkward gaffe her father made when meeting Mark Hamill, who plays Luke Skywalker.

She has, however, said that she won’t star in any further Star Wars films beyond 2019’s Episode 9.

The Last Jedi is out on December 14 in the UK.

The movie, due December 14 in the UK, is arguably the most hotly-anticipated release of the year.

A series of new stills from LucasFilm show an array of leading characters in action in The Last Jedi.

Among them are Rey (Daisy Ridley), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and Finn (John Boyega).

Browse through the new photos below.

It’s not the only exciting news to come out today – Rian Johnson, the movie’s writer and director, has confirmed that the whole thing is finished.

Taking to Instagram, he confirmed that post production work on the blockbuster has finally been wrapped.

“Aaaand that’s a wrap on the hardest working post production team in the galaxy. Going to miss sitting in dark rooms with these goobers,” he captioned his snap.

Once Episode 8 is out, attention will turn to JJ Abrams’ efforts on Episode 9, due in late 2019.

In the meantime, the Han Solo film will be released next May.

That anthology tale, however, is still lacking an official title.

While there aren’t quite enough entries to make this one of our regular Star Wars Bits columns, enough scattered pieces of information about this year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi have surfaced recently that they’re worth collecting in one place and talking about one by one. Let’s dive into some new images featuring Finn and Rose, an X-Wing upgrade for Poe Dameron, learn how Captain Phasma escaped her trash compactor at the end of The Force Awakens, and read excerpts of a new interview with The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson.

SW Finn and Rose

Let’s start with some photos. Empire Magazine is about to drop an eight page feature on The Last Jedi tomorrow, but as a precursor to the new images that will accompany that piece, they’ve released a couple of new ones a day early. First up, here’s a photo of Finn (John Boyega) and a new character Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) at the gambling city of Canto Bight. Rian Johnson spoke briefly about crafting that environment for this movie:

“I wanted a new environment that was like dunking your head in a cool bath of water, right in the middle of movie. Apart from the prequels, all the touchstones that make something feel like Star Wars have to do with griminess and dirt. I wanted to do something completely different.”

That’s quite a staring contest Finn and Rose seem to be having in that image, and while I assumed their relationship would be friendly since they’re on a mysterious mission together, it seems as if there may be some tension between them. We know that Rose sees Finn as a hero because of what he did in The Force Awakens, and that Finn is reluctant to get back into the action because of the injury he sustained in his fight with Kylo Ren. So maybe – and this is pure speculation – this conflict between them arises when a wrench is thrown in their mission, Finn wants to bail, and Rose inspires him to do what’s right, regardless of how dangerous the situation may be.

The Last Jedi Empire X-Wing

Meanwhile, the same site posted this new photo of an X-Wing that belongs to Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), and this baby has received a major upgrade and a cool new nickname: Black One. I’ll let Empire describe the big difference between how it appears in The Last Jedi versus how we saw it last:

The X-Wing (an Incom-FreiTek T-70, to be precise) has, according to Rian Johnson, been specially modified by Resistance engineers, with a temporary accelerator pod affixed to the aft section. According to The Last Jedidirector, the pod, when primed, increases Dameron’s speed, allowing him to outrun First Order cannon emplacements.

rian johnson's the last jedi set photos

Elsewhere, Johnson spoke with The New York Times about making The Last Jedi. The whole interview is worth reading, but there are a few notable points worth separating. First, Johnson confirms what he’s said before: Lucasfilm essentially let him have free reign over the sequel’s story. When asked if he was instructed to hit certain plot points, or to make sure the movie ends in a certain way, he replied:

“Nothing like that. But it’s the second film in a trilogy. The first film got these characters here. This second movie has to dig into and challenge these characters. I wanted this to be a satisfying experience unto itself. I didn’t want it to end with a dot, dot, dot, question mark.”

And Johnson also confirmed, again, that the voice we hear in the teaser trailer saying “It’s time for the Jedi to end,” is in fact Luke Skywalker’s:

“That’s him. It sounds pretty dire. That’s something that we’re definitely going to dig into. The heart of the movie is Luke and Rey. It follows all the other characters, but its real essence is the development of the two of them. And it’s absolutely tied up in that question of, What is Luke’s attitude toward the Jedi?”

Phasma comic saber battle

And while this may not necessarily be specifically related to The Last Jedi, it definitely concerns one of its characters: we finally know how Captain Phasma escaped the trash compactor at the end of The Force Awakens. Marvel’s newest Star Wars comic, Captain Phasma #1, reveals that an explosion ripped a hole in Phasma’s filthy temporary prison and she was able to escape through it. You can read a super spoilery breakdown of everything that happens in the comic over at io9, but there’s one last detail I thought was cool enough to share: after busting out, Phasma witnesses the lightsaber battle between Kylo Ren and Rey in the snowy woods just before she escapes the exploding Starkiller base. I doubt that she’ll actually be able to use that information in any meaningful way in The Last Jedi (since general audiences will have no idea that she witnessed it), but it’s the type of connection Lucasfilm’s story group has loved to include in its comic book gap fillers ever since they wiped out the Extended Universe.

‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’: What Are Kylo Ren and Captain Phasma Doing in the Sequel? https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-the-last-jedi-what-are-kylo-ren-and-captain-phasma-doing-in-the-sequel/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-the-last-jedi-what-are-kylo-ren-and-captain-phasma-doing-in-the-sequel/#respond Sat, 12 Aug 2017 06:51:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-the-last-jedi-what-are-kylo-ren-and-captain-phasma-doing-in-the-sequel/ starwars-lastjedi-kyloren-nohelmet

In addition to a new crew of instantly lovable heroes, Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced one of the best and most complex villains in the history of the saga: Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. It also introduced Gwendoline Christie‘s Captain Phasma, who looked really, really cool, but didn’t do much of anything in the actual plot.

As you’d expect, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will continue the journey of both characters and some newly revealed details offer a tease of what we can expect.

The Last Jedi writer/director Rian Johnson, speaking with Entertainment Weekly, describes Ben Solo’s transformation into Kylo Ren as being indicative of “the treacherous road through adolescence,” which feels like the understatement of this young century. But this angry young man with his wonky homemade lightsaber had his ass handed to him by a fearless young woman at the end of The Force Awakens…which happened right after he murdered his own father, Han Solo. Johnson notes that this emotional whiplash will not go unnoticed in his movie:

He’s definitely been knocked off base. The defeat that he had at the end of The Force Awakens, but even bigger than that, his huge defining act which, spoiler alert, is the murder of his father… that’s the more interesting thing to dive into. How has he dealt with that in his head? Where is he at in terms of that act and what does that mean for him?

In fact, Kylo Ren’s actions at the end of the previous film will echo throughout The Last Jedi. Chewbacca, the loyal Wookiee warrior, will be seen dealing with the loss of Han, his best friend and longtime parter-in-skullduggery. “It was obviously a big loss for him, but, you know, he’s Chewie,” Johnson told EW, “He’s resilient.”

Meanwhile, Daisy Ridley‘s Rey will have to deal with the fact that Kylo Ren cut down the closest person she’s ever had to a father-figure and she’s none-too-happy about that:

She just doesn’t understand Kylo. When all she wanted was parents, why would a person who has parents do that? It’s so beyond comprehension, it’s ridiculous. So she has grief for the loss and then there’s anger. To be honest, she couldn’t understand doing something like that – let alone to your parents.

But what about Captain Phasma, the chrome-plated Stormtrooper who was unceremoniously dumped into a trash compactor and never seen again in The Force Awakens? Johnson promises that Christie’s striking-looking henchwoman will play a larger role in the film, even if her backstory won’t be explored:

Gwendoline Christie is one of my favorite people, and you get to see her in action which I think is going to be really fun. That character is just so damn cool looking. Like, okay, let’s see what we can do with her. Let’s put her in action and see what happens.

To actually learn where Phasma came from and what she’s all about, you’ll have to read the upcoming Marvel comic miniseries and novel exploring her backstory. Welcome to Star Wars fandom in 2017!

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens on December 15, 2017.

Star Wars 8: What happened to Captain Phasma AFTER Force Awakens? All is revealed https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-what-happened-to-captain-phasma-after-force-awakens-all-is-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-what-happened-to-captain-phasma-after-force-awakens-all-is-revealed/#respond Thu, 15 Jun 2017 17:36:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-what-happened-to-captain-phasma-after-force-awakens-all-is-revealed/

After a major build up Phasma was rather a damp squib in Episode 7.

Star Wars rarely has many powerful female protagonists, especially villains, and it felt like a huge opportunity was squandered.

Phasma is supposed to be a terrifying and ruthless leader and she is played by an actress with the presence and talent to bring something powerful to the franchise.

Instead Gwendoline Christie’s First Order warrior meekly rolled over in a moment of danger and was rather easily convinced to hand over vitally important access. She was then ignomiously shoved into a garbage shute – which is where the whole plotline should have ended up.

We have already seen her in the Last Jedi trailer, however the scene at the burning temple is expected to be a flashback. It has led some fans to wonder if

Star Wars set leaks have also revealed Phasma’s amazing new weapon and she was pictured in the recent Vanity Fair special edition.

However, the character is about to be front and center in a new storyline devoted to how she escaped from the garbage shute on the exploding Starkiller Base and what she did before we see her again in The Last Jedi.

Phasma will star in a four-part comic series, Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma.

Kelly Thompson, the writer said: “The most exciting thing to me about our miniseries is that we were given the awesome responsibility of bridging a gap between Force Awakens and Last Jedi… of answering the question of what happened to Phasma after she went into that trash chute.

“Anytime you get to write official Star Wars is pretty incredible, but getting to decide what that link is, for a super intriguing character in some of the most epic movies of all time, is next level!”

Phasma will also star in her own, self-titled novel.

The book will explore her past and how she became to be such a major First Order figure.

Star Wars 8 trailer The Last Jedi: PHASMA not Kylo destroyed Luke's Jedi school? https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-trailer-the-last-jedi-phasma-not-kylo-destroyed-lukes-jedi-school/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-trailer-the-last-jedi-phasma-not-kylo-destroyed-lukes-jedi-school/#respond Fri, 14 Apr 2017 18:29:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-8-trailer-the-last-jedi-phasma-not-kylo-destroyed-lukes-jedi-school/

The new teaser trailer was full of tantalising glimpses of what is to come.

Some of them, however, also show what has gone before as we get another look at the Forceback visions from The Force Awakens.

We have always thought that Kylo Ren had destroyed Luke’s Jedi students, but have we been mislead?

As the terrible truth behind what happened between Luke, Ben Solo and the First Order is revealed, are we seeing the end of Luke’s faith in the Jedi ways. Is this what he meant at the end of the new trailer?

One of the most shocking sights was a burning building with two familiar figures looking on.

This appears to be the reverse shot of a scene we saw in the Forceback vision Rey had at Maz Kanata’s castle in The Force Awakens where a cloaked figure hands R2-D2 a lightsaber.

We assumed this was Luke and now it seems we are seeing the moment when all his dreams of a new Jedi order went up in flames.

Even more shocking is the sight of Captain Phasma striding through the burning building.

Did Phasma and her First Order stormtroopers end the hopes of a Jedi rebirth?

There is no sign of Kylo Ren and his cloaked supporters. Are they also there or was the Forceback vision of him impaling a soldier from a different time entirely?  It was raining heavily in that scene but not in the footage of the burning building.

Even more disturbingis the fact that Luke is just watching, not fighting.

Dd he abandon his school and students to their fate? Is this when he gave up on the Jedi?

Daisy Ridley also revealed today that Rey will be shocked and disillusioned by what Luke shows her. and the closing line of the new trailer is particularly ominous.

Luke says: “It is time for the Jedi to end.”

The Last Jedi really is more than just the name of the movie, it is the end of the Jedi altogether.
