  • CVS Caremark, the in-house pharmacy benefit manager for CVS, has been accused of squeezing small pharmacies, driving some out of business.
  • Lawmakers in Arkansas and Ohio have been quick to pass laws designed to end this by demanding higher transparency or regulatory oversight.
  • CVS is also trying to buy up small pharmacies, which is much easier to do if they’re going out of business.

The short version of what happened to CVS in 2018 is this: The company got too greedy, and then it got caught.

In its greed, the company squeezed independent mom-and-pop pharmacies. The squeezing wasn’t being done by the part of CVS you buy dental floss from or visit to pick up a prescription, though it’s not unrelated. It’s a behind-the-scenes business known as a pharmacy benefit manager, which manages payments between insurers and pharmacies and drug companies.

Aussie flu is spreading across Britain, and it seems some pharmacies are struggling to cope with the demand.

Six branches of Boots in the UK were unable to offer flu jabs this weekend.

What is Aussie flu? Australian flu, a strain of flu known as H3N2, caused havoc in Australia over its winter.

Now it has spread to the UK, as patients are hospitalised under the NHS. But can you die from Aussie flu?

Some 85 people are reported to have died from the flu so far this winter. 

Now it seems the potentially life saving vaccine is running out for new patients.

The discovery arose from an investigation taken out by Sky News.

The branches were located in London, Sheffield, Leeds, Glasgow, Birmingham and Belfast.

London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Leeds branches said they were out of stock of the vaccine.

They could not confirm when new supplies of the vaccine would be delivered.

The Glasgow and Belfast branches contacted did have some vaccine.

However, they were unable to perform the vaccine on new patients thanks to a backlog.

There was “a very high level of demand in the recent week”, a Boots representative told Sky News.

The consequence of this was that “some Boots stores temporarily ran out of stock for a limited time.”

She also said a new supply of the new vaccine was available at the Boots warehouse at present. 

Express.co.uk have contacted Boots for a further comment on the stock shortage.

Amazon is buying Whole Foods for $ 13.7 billion, and pharmacy stocks are feeling the heat. 

The pharmaceutical supply chain is down by a total market cap of $ 10 billion, according to UBS.

In addition to the grocery stores whose stocks have been getting clobbered on the news, here are the drug industry companies that are also taking a hit. 

It’s not the first time the prescription drug industry has been concerned about Amazon entering the pharma business. CNBC reported in May that Amazon is seriously considering entering the pharmacy business, leading to speculation about what that might look like. 

Whole Foods doesn’t have a pharmacy, though it does sell vitamins and supplements. That means that Amazon’s entrance into the pharmacy business, at least at a brick-and-mortar-level, might not be immediate. 

“We recognize that the sheer establishment of a physical presence is likely to give pause to those more concerned by the Amazon risk but note that Whole Foods does not have pharmacy and therefore is less likely to serve as a specific conduit towards driving whatever Amazon’s eventual pharmacy strategy might be,” UBS said in a note.
