‘Phantom Doctrine’ Is A Fascinating And Flawed Cold War Spy Thriller https://briefnews.eu/phantom-doctrine-is-a-fascinating-and-flawed-cold-war-spy-thriller/ https://briefnews.eu/phantom-doctrine-is-a-fascinating-and-flawed-cold-war-spy-thriller/#respond Sun, 19 Aug 2018 12:28:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/phantom-doctrine-is-a-fascinating-and-flawed-cold-war-spy-thriller/ phantom1.jpg
Phantom Doctrine is the cold war spy thriller of my dreams, spinning an intricate web of intrigue and conspiracy. The game has you staring at a world map, trying to unravel the increasingly complicated plot while sending your agents all over the globe, doing spy stuff in turn-based encounters. It’s a moody, highly atmospheric game that perfectly captures the essence of spy flicks and novels, but sadly, it also has a few issues.

Creative Forge, developers of turn-based Weird West tactics game Hard West, certainly hit all the right beats here. Most of the narrative developments take place in the strategy mode, where you pull the strings of your covert organization – this includes literally connecting documents with strings on a Pinboard to uncover new plot elements, which is all kinds of amazing.

You can develop your headquarters, add facilities to forge money and documents, improve your agents via questionable implants, or brainwash captured opponents. If you mess up too often in the field, your operatives’ covers will be blown, requiring new identities. Likewise, if you let your enemies operate without foiling their plans, your headquarters’ location will be compromised, requiring you to destroy all traces of your organization and setting up shop elsewhere.

The spy business is not a straightforward affair, so you will be tasked with managing your different operations. There’s always someone travelling somewhere, working on something, or performing duties in your HQ. Keeping all the players safe in the field while actively working towards larger goals and keeping track of stuff that spontaneously crops up – rumors of enemy activity in Beirut! A possible informant in Paris! – will put your multi-tasking abilities to the test. It’s stressful in a rather pleasant way. There’s always something going on, but you never get the feeling that you’re treading in place.

Thematically, all of this is spot-on and, as far as I am concerned, enjoyable enough to overlook several issues, which mostly manifest themselves in the field. Let’s say your task is to infiltrate an enemy building to kill or capture an important informant. You deploy two of your agents outside, and the first step is to find a point of entry without raising the alarm right away. Your agents would certainly be outnumbered, and considering how combat works in this game (trading the traditional “to hit percentage” with a system where most shots hit and damage is calculated by taking factors like cover and distance into account), this would make your mission very difficult indeed.

So you’re outside, and you’ll spend the first few turns looking for a way in. One entrance is well-guarded, the other one is covered by camera surveillance. There is always some loophole, some way of knocking out a guard and sneaking in or breaking in through an unguarded window or whatnot, but finding it may take a while, especially in the beginning of the game, where for some reason, silenced weapons are not at your disposal. Seriously, a spy thriller without silenced pistols? Heresy. In any case, the pacing feels off.

Suppose you’ve made your way inside now. Let the save-scumming begin! Each new room you walk into could somehow alert the guards of your presence, so your way through these tactical encounters is filled with trial-and-error. It’s utterly satisfying when your plans work out, but there have been situations that forced me to try again way too many times in order to prevent early detection. It’s overall a bit fiddly and the game doesn’t always explain its mechanics too well.

When it works, it is glorious. Missions where my team had to shoot its way out of an ambush, or stealthy abductions that turned awry in the last minutes and became edge-of-your-seat escapes will certainly stay with me for a while. On the other hand, there are covert missions, which – when played right – just aren’t that exciting. If you come here, expecting a more XCOM-like experience, it might take a bit until you fully get along with the game’s idiosyncracies.

What I am getting at is that you probably shouldn’t play Phantom Doctrine for its moment-to-moment gameplay. Not yet, that is, as the developers are currently hard at work tackling issues that the player base has with the game. Sweeping changes to some of the mechanics have been announced, and they might shake up the turn-based missions quite a bit. Until then, you should absolutely get this for the phenomenal cold war spy stuff. Play on easy, save-scum the hell out of the missions, and just enjoy the intrigue.

You can purchase Phantom Doctrine from GOG and Steam. The game has also been released on the PS4 and will be out next week on the Xbox One. For more information, visit the game’s website or follow latest updates on Twitter.

The 5 Best Movies to Buy or Stream This Week: ‘Phantom Thread,’ ‘Molly’s Game’ https://briefnews.eu/the-5-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-phantom-thread-mollys-game/ https://briefnews.eu/the-5-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-phantom-thread-mollys-game/#respond Wed, 11 Apr 2018 19:23:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-5-best-movies-to-buy-or-stream-this-week-phantom-thread-mollys-game/ Awards season may finally, finallybe over, as the last two stragglers from this year’s prestige picture crop finally make their way onto disc and demand. Plus, we’ve got a forgotten gem of silent comedy, and a pair of last fall’s strongest dramas on your streaming platforms. Take a look:

ON NETFLIX

Una: “I was never one of them,” Ray (Ben Mendelsohn) insists, and he says it so firmly, you almost believe him. By “them” he means pedophiles, and he is one; years ago, he had sex with a 13-year-old neighbor, and she thought it was love. And now here she is, an adult (played, with her remarkable combination of poise and brittleness, by Rooney Mara), showing up at the place where he works – under a new name – to make him answer for what he did back then, and the life she’s lived since. Throw in that this is a theatrical adaptation, and you can see how easily it could’ve gone wrong: staginess, melodrama, clumsy handling of sensitive subject matter. And yet somehow, it doesn’t; the rendering is cinematic, the staging is clever, and the performances are stunning.

ON AMAZON PRIME

The Florida Project: Director Sean Baker’s follow-up to the heartfelt, funny, and fabulous Tangerine focuses on a handful of wild, goofy kids, spending the summer at a Disney World-adjacent cheapo motel – getting by, hustling, and making their own fun. Little Brooklynn Prince is staggeringly good as Moonee, the spirited little girl at the story’s center, while newcomer Bria Vinaite deftly navigates the tricky morality of Moonee’s mom. But the stand-out performer here is Willem Dafoe, at the top of his game as the motel manager, a good-hearted, live-and-let-live type who is ultimately just looking out for these kids. It’s funny and high-spirited, but not as rudderless at it seems; it sneaks up on you, this movie, and its closing passages are emotionally wrecking.

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

Phantom Thread:Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest is one of his strangest – and that’s saying something – a deliciously baroque and frequently funny period piece concerning a brilliant but cruel mid-century British fashion designer (Daniel Day-Lewis) and the woman (Vicky Krieps) who breaks him. What seems, initially, like yet another story of the Troubled Male Genius veers, unexpectedly, into something far more eccentric and elegiac; it also displays Anderson at the absolute peak of his craft, solidifying a style in which formal precision and narrative idiosyncrasy can cozily co-exist. It’s a masterful piece of work, and those who feel it somehow endorses toxic masculinity should have their movie-watching privileges revoked. (Includes deleted scenes, “fashions how,” behind-the-scenes photos, and camera tests with audio commentary.)

Molly’s Game:The greatest pleasure of Aaron Sorkin’s scripts is the screwball snap of his dialogue, full of repetitions and interruptions and jazzy rhythms, and his directorial debut has that same charge – while simultaneously finding the visual equivalent to his words in short, staccato bursts of image and sound. He’s telling the true story of the savvy young woman who ran a private poker game for very high rollers, crafting it into a deliciously twisty narrative that’s told from the inside – both in Molly’s card games (she notes, of one regular, “He was playing poker, and the others were gambling,” and it’s a movie that knows the difference) and her drug problem (which Sorkin seems to connect to his own). The bloom has come off Sorkin’s rose a bit in recent years, often for good reason. But this chatty, snazzy, savvy picture is a welcome reminder of what he does well. (Includes featurette.)

ON BLU-RAY

Manhandled: If you only know Gloria Swanson as the faded silent diva of Sunset Boulevard, this 1924 comedy from director Alan Dwan – new on Blu from Kino Lorber, alongside their later collaboration Stage Struck– should fix that. Swanson is an absolute firecracker, equal parts silly and sexy, as Tessie McGuire, a dissatisfied shopgirl who penetrates the New York social scene by masquerading as the mysterious Russian “Countess Offernutski.” That stuff is well and good, but the high point comes early, in a set piece on a hilariously cramped subway car that’s a little masterpiece of physical comedy; it’s like something Harold Lloyd would have done, and I don’t think he’d have done it any better. (Includes audio commentary.)

‘Phantom Thread’ Camera Tests Take You Behind the Scenes of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Latest https://briefnews.eu/phantom-thread-camera-tests-take-you-behind-the-scenes-of-paul-thomas-andersons-latest/ https://briefnews.eu/phantom-thread-camera-tests-take-you-behind-the-scenes-of-paul-thomas-andersons-latest/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 21:05:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/phantom-thread-camera-tests-take-you-behind-the-scenes-of-paul-thomas-andersons-latest/ phantom thread camera tests

Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Phantom Thread was one of the best films of 2017, and this brief behind-the-scenes glimpse at the film is better than most modern films in their entirety. That may sound like hyperbole, but I really do mean it. Below, watch Phantom Thread camera tests featuring commentary by Anderson himself.

How on earth are these behind-the-scenes Phantom Thread camera tests better than most modern films in their entirety? I don’t know – it’s a mystery. But it’s somehow true. I’d rather watch these tests than most modern blockbusters. Then again, maybe I’m just a weirdo. As Phantom Thread arrives on Blu-ray this week, we’ll be treated to several behind-the-scenes featurettes, including this one. Below, let Paul Thomas Anderson be your guide through several camera tests used to get Phantom Thread just right.

Phantom Thread Camera Tests

As Jonny Greenwood‘s gorgeous score plays, Anderson talks about testing film stocks, costumes, make-up, and more. These tests ran right up until shooting started. Anderson rattles off filters and camera stock names, and that should be boring, and yet, it’s not. You’ll see shots of cameras slowly pushing in on Vicky Krieps, whom Anderson is clearly enamored with (and rightfully s0). The same goes for Lesley Manville, of whom Anderson says: “You’d have to be pretty foolish to not light her well,” and adds: “She has a face that is a stop and a half brighter than everyone else’s in the movie; she has luminescent skin.”

There are also location scouting shots, which includes a sea foam storm, which looks pretty god damn magical (nothing like that appears in the film, sadly). Other footage includes Daniel Day-Lewis fiddling with a dress, to which Anderson comments that Day-Lewis studied how to make dresses for over a year. This was something previously confirmed by Day-Lewis himself. Talking with W Magazine, the actor said:

“The Balenciaga dress was very simple. Or at least it looked very simple until I had to figure out a way to make it and then realized, My God, this is incredibly complicated. There is nothing more beautiful in all the arts than something that appears simple. And if you try to do any goddamn thing in your life, you know how impossible it is to achieve that effortless simplicity.”

The camera test footage ends with a big food fight scene between Daniel Day-Lewis and Leslie Manville (which we previously covered here). Overall, this is a treat. Anderson has stopped doing commentary tracks on the Blu-ray releases for his film, so this will have to suffice.

Phantom Thread arrives on Blu-ray April 10, 2018.

This weekend, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s latest film Phantom Thread is up for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film has been in theaters since Christmas, and by now it’s already mostly gone. But while you wait for the movie to arrive on home video in a few weeks, you can spend some time listening to a specially curated list of music hand-picked by Paul Thomas Anderson himself.

When Phantom Thread held some special screenings around the United States, audiences who arrived a little early were treated to a special playlist of music as a prelude to the film. The tracklist feature a mix of classical music, presumably influences for Jonny Greenwood‘s incredible score, as well as some familiar songs that fit the theme of the film rather well.

Listen to the Phantom Thread Mixtape

As you can see, there’s some classical tracks on there, including Bernard Hermann, but then there are some amusing selections like “You’re So Vain” by Carly Simon, and songs of devotion and passion like “Stay” by Rihanna and “XO” by Beyonce. There’s also The Everly Brothers and Bruce Springsteen. Thanks to the folks at TIFF for bringing this collection of music hand-selected by Paul Thomas Anderson.

For those of you interested in more from Paul Thomas Anderson and Phantom Thread, watch this extensive conversation with the filmmaker that is basically a mini master class in cinema. You won’t regret it .

Phantom Thread hits digital download on March 27, 2018, then Blu-ray and DVD on April 10, 2018.

The film opens nationwide today — which the rest of us the country the opportunity to luxuriate in the movie’s lush setting and gorgeous fashions.

Set in post-war London during the ’50s, Daniel Day-Lewis stars as esteemed designer Reynolds Woodcock, who falls in love with a woman quite his opposite, played by star Vicky Krieps. Fashion is at the heart of the breathtaking love story about the artist and the muse — and judging by this new featurette, great care and attention was paid to the costuming, right down to every last detail. In the clip, we learn about the delicate 17th-century Flemish lace used in the movie, the real-life couturiers from the 1950s who appeared in the film, and the demanding schedule designers worked under, producing incredible gowns in mere months.

Visit the film’s official website for more information, and swoon over Phantom Thread‘s costumes in the below clip.

The ‘Phantom Thread’ Score is Now Streaming, Watch a Few New Clips https://briefnews.eu/the-phantom-thread-score-is-now-streaming-watch-a-few-new-clips/ https://briefnews.eu/the-phantom-thread-score-is-now-streaming-watch-a-few-new-clips/#respond Sat, 13 Jan 2018 08:14:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-phantom-thread-score-is-now-streaming-watch-a-few-new-clips/ Phantom Thread Score

Only a few people have been able to see Phantom Thread in theaters since its limited release in December, but the Paul Thomas Anderson movie remains as tantalizing as ever. The release of its gorgeous, stirring soundtrack certainly helps.

The score by Jonny Greenwood, who has collaborated with Anderson three times before on There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice, is a work of art on par with the haute couture dresses that Daniel Day-Lewis‘ fashion designer crafts in the film, which he creates with the help of his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) and his muse, Alma (Vicky Krieps).

Greenwood has yet to earn an Oscar nomination for his work, but hopefully his score for Phantom Thread will change that. The Radiohead lead guitarist and keyboardist has proven to have a gift for film scoring and this evocative score landed him a Golden Globe nomination, though he lost out to Alexandre Desplat for The Shape of Water.

The full Phantom Thread soundtrack — which Greenwood told Variety was influenced by the film’s 1950s setting, is now available on Spotify. The soundtrack will also be made available on CD on February 9 and vinyl April 21.

“We talked a lot about ‘50s music, what was popularly heard then as well as what was being written and recorded,” Greenwood explained about his score in his interview with Variety. “Nelson Riddle and Glenn Gould’s Bach recordings were the main references. I was interested in the kind of jazz records that toyed with incorporating big string sections, Ben Webster made some good ones, and focus on what the strings were doing rather than the jazz musicians themselves.”

It’s obvious that Greenwood put meticulous thought and energy into the score. Every aspect of the film was handled just as meticulously, especially the costume design upon which the plot hinges. Costume designer Mark Bridges was given under six months to replicate the high fashion of 1950s post-war London. In a featurette for Phantom Thread, Bridges described how over 50 original wardrobe pieces were created for the film — all of which were inextricably tied to the story and designs of Daniel Day-Lewis’ character, Reynolds Woodcock.

This featurette, and several more clips below, are released ahead of Focus Features expanding the film’s limited release nationwide to over 20 cities. Phantom Thread is also being shown in 70mm and digital in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco, Austin, and Chicago.

Phantom Thread opens nationwide on January 19, 2018.

Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life, providing the confirmed bachelor with inspiration and companionship, until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love.
