A “bloody huge” meteor that sounded like a “plane crashing” and made dogs go “psycho” dazzled onlookers as it streaked across the Perth night sky on Tuesday. Scientists say it most likely hit Earth.

Firefighters received numerous calls at around 7:40 pm, on Tuesday, from frantic locals who had caught a glimpse of the fireball. Some said they suspected it was a UFO, while others phoned because they feared it could start a massive fire.

One woman said she was in the shower when she heard something akin to a “plane crashing.”

Rosena Cox told ABC: “I just heard this enormous bang, it sounded like an explosion and I just thought ‘what on earth was that’ because it was so intense.”

Another said it couldn’t have been just thunder because of the “boom” that accompanied it. Robyn Garratt said people felt like “the sky was falling.”

“It shook the whole house, the windows, the dog went psycho,” Garratt added.

Twitter was afloat with shocked accounts of the blazing ball.

One branded it “bloody huge”, while another believed he had been “flashed by a speed camera”.

Director of the Desert Fireball Network, Professor Phil Bland, said initial observations suggested the inferno ball had hit Earth. He said because the object was “unusually bright” it must have been “big,” before adding that the sonic booms reported by people are a compelling factor indicating that the fireball entered the atmosphere.

CCTV and witness footage of the burning object is now being reviewed by the Perth Observatory in a bid to understand its origin.

12pm: Check-in for Qantas flight QF10 to Perth and Melbourne at Heathrow Terminal 3. This is the first ever passenger-carrying flight nonstop to Australia; in 1989 a Boeing 747 made the trip to Sydney, but with no paying passengers on board.

Records tumble in ridiculous Perth run chase https://briefnews.eu/records-tumble-in-ridiculous-perth-run-chase/ https://briefnews.eu/records-tumble-in-ridiculous-perth-run-chase/#respond Mon, 08 Jan 2018 15:18:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/records-tumble-in-ridiculous-perth-run-chase/ A RECORD Perth crowd honoured a favourite son and proclaimed a new hero of the future as Ashton Turner produced the most explosive half century in Scorchers history to propel his side to a five-wicket win over the Melbourne Renegades at The Furnace on Monday night.

Perth’s chances of maintaining their unbeaten record against the Renegades seemed slim when Cameron White (68 not out) and Tom Cooper (57) catapulted the visitors to a hefty total of 3/185 and when Michael Klinger fell with the first legal delivery of the innings the odds of a Scorchers win dropped even further.

The crowd of 22,312 was the biggest ever recorded for a Big Bash League game at the WACA and they were glued to their seats right up until Ashton Agar (27 not out off 17 balls) hit the winning runs with just a single ball to spare.

Two run outs by Dwayne Bravo in the 19th over put the Renegades back in the frame but the final over seemed a mere mortality when the Scorchers needed just three runs for victory, their task facing Mohammad Nabi taking five balls before the job was finished.

The Scorchers had never successfully chased such a large total but on the back of Turner’s 70 off just 32 balls and 55 from Englishman David Willey they recorded their fifth win of the tournament to assume top spot on the BBL ladder.

Turner brought up his 50 off just 23 balls – the fastest ever by a Scorchers batsman – but it could have ended very differently had he not been dropped by fan favourite Brad Hogg when he wa son just 16.

With the Renegades in control of the contest the 46-year-old broke from signing autographs to lunge at a difficult chance on the boundary and then played up his misfortune to the adoring crowd.

It would prove a costly miss however with player of the match Turner adding insult into injury by hitting Hogg for successive sixes with the last two balls he will ever bowl at the WACA.

It was an emotional occasion for Hogg and not how he wanted his final act at the ground he called home during five years with the Scorchers to come to an end.

“I will have fond memories but I dropped the catch that cost us the game so the boys will give it to me about that,” Hogg told Channel 10 post game.

“I was surprised how relaxed I was. I was the most relaxed I’ve ever been in a game but this morning in the lead-up I had a few tears.

“This has been my home of cricket for 24 years. The WACA has played a big part in the development of my career, the fans have been right behind me throughout my career. I wasn’t sure what reception I’d get tonight but they still got behind me.

“My last game at the WACA was something special.”

After a bright start courtesy of some free-swinging strokeplay from Marcus Harris (48 from 28 balls) the Renegades innings stalled as Tom Cooper struggled to gather momentum early in his innings.

His strike rate was down under a run a ball and he smashed a ball from Andrew Tye into the grill of his helmet in trying to scoop a daring shot up over the wicket-keeper’s head but he turned on a scintillating period of improvisation to transform Melbourne’s innings.

With Cameron White (68 off 55 balls) continuing his superb form at the other end Cooper hit the switch in extraordinary fashion, going from 16 off 22 balls to 50 off 32 balls before eventually falling to Tye – caught on the third man boundary – for 57 from 34 balls.

Despite his earlier error in playing a paddle shot into his face it was a shot Cooper persisted with to devastating effect.

Twice he flicked Jhye Richardson over fine leg for six as well as a boundary in the 19th over and then did the same to Tye to start the 20th over as he and White exploded for 71 runs from the final five overs of their innings.

The Scorchers innings could hardly have started in worse fashion when Michael Klinger fell with the first legal delivery of the innings – caught behind off the bowling of Mohammad Nabi – but Willey and Hilton Cartwright (22 off 23 balls) added 42 and then Willey and Turner turned the match with their 87-run stand.

BIG MOMENTS

Thirty-four-year-old Cameron White climbed to the top of the BBL 07 run-scorer’s list with his knock of 68 not out but it was a shot just after reaching his half century that exemplified just how well he is hitting the ball at present. Facing imminent Australian one-day debutant Jhye Richardson and with his 50 safely reached, White chipped a half volley on leg stump with half a swing that sent the ball sailing into the air and over the mid-wicket fence. The mind boggles as to where the ball would have finished had he actually had a crack at it.

The beauty of sport is that we will never know what might have happened had Scorchers wicket-keeper Josh Inglis not dropped Tom Cooper when he was on 1 but you can bet it will have kept the 22-year-old Englishman up last night if his team had lost. Trying to break the shackles having faced five balls for his lone run, Cooper swung for the fences and succeeded only in hitting it straight up in the air. Inglis moved around to where the ball was coming back down to earth near short fine leg, positioned himself directly underneath it and basically failed to get any part of his glove on it. It sent the home crowd into hysterics and gave Cooper the life he needed to play a what was very nearly a match-winning innings.

At 2/148 heading into the 19th over the Renegades were eyeing off a total of around 170 until some stunning innovation from Cooper – not to mention bravery – saw them yield 37 runs from the last 12 balls of their innings. Having hit a ball flush into his face earlier in his innings, Cooper went back to the paddle shot with devastating effect, hitting two sixes and a boundary off the second last over of the innings to propel the Renegades on a rapid trajectory in the closing overs.

It was an emotional homecoming for former Perth favourite son Brad Hogg on Monday night but there was no sentiment when he was thrown the ball in the seventh over. With the third ball of his spell he beat both the both batsman and the ‘keeper with a wrong ‘un that went for four byes but it took just two more balls before he got his man. Scorchers all-rounder Hilton Cartwright (22 off 23 balls) was lured just far enough out of his crease to give Tim Ludeman a look-in, the Renegades gloveman whipping off the zing bails and sparking another wild Hogg wicket celebration.

“It was actually quite humorous to be honest.” Brad Hodge’s immediate summation of Brad Hogg’s dropped catch on the boundary was a reflection of the mood at the ground but it would become less funny as Ashton Turner piled on the runs. Turner was on just 16 in the 11th over when Hogg dropped a difficult chance and while he won the crowd over with his self-deprecating response, the crowd was even happier when the Scorchers completed an extraordinary victory with a ball to spare.

‘World’s worst’ Fed charms Perth https://briefnews.eu/worlds-worst-fed-charms-perth/ https://briefnews.eu/worlds-worst-fed-charms-perth/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 19:03:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/worlds-worst-fed-charms-perth/ WORLD No. 2 Roger Federer continued his strong early-season form with a 6-3 7-6 (10-8) win over Russian Karen Khachanov at the Hopman Cup on Tuesday night.

Federer was broken in his first service game, but bounced back strongly to win the match in 77 minutes and give Switzerland a 1-0 lead in the tie. Former world No. 7 Belinda Bencic can secure the tie win with victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the women’s singles rubber.

Federer started his Hopman Cup campaign with a straight sets win over Japan’s Yuichi Sugita. And although he started slowly against Khachanov, he quickly bounced back to win the opening set in 29 minutes.

The second set was an entertaining arm wrestle as both players produced powerful service games.

But Federer finally cracked the Russian in an epic tiebreak, saving a set point to secure the win on his third match point, courtesy of a successful challenge.

He might have all the tricks but Federer has a reputation for being one of the worst judges on tour of when to challenge, and the irony of how he wrapped up the match wasn’t lost on anyone.

Federer couldn’t look at the screen and the crowd cracked up laughing as the replay showed Khachanov’s ball landed just millimetres wide.

Earlier in the match the 36-year-old had made fun of his lack of success using the technology at the players’ disposal.

“I can’t watch, it’s too nerve wracking,” he joked.

“He’s the world’s best tennis player but he is the world’s worst challenger,” Basil Zempilas added in commentary for Channel Seven.

‘GROSS’ MOMENT IN CASH COMEBACK

Aussie legend Pat Cash made an unexpected comeback to tennis at age 52 when he went from the stands to the court to partner his pupil CoCo Vandeweghe at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

The American’s coach got his racquet out when Vandeweghe’s partner Jack Sock pulled out of the mixed doubles against Japan with a hip injury, suffered during his match against Yuichi Sugita earlier on Tuesday. He retired at 1-1 in the second set after losing the first 7-6 (7-1).

Cash’s appearance wasn’t the only bizarre aspect of the mixed doubles clash. Aussie teenager Maddison Inglis partnered Sugita because Naomi Osaka withdrew earlier with an unspecified illness, handing Vandeweghe a 6-0 6-0 win in their scheduled singles match.

The Americans were awarded the Fast4 mixed doubles match 4-0 4-0 because Osaka was not able to compete, so regardless of Cash’s performance, he was never in danger of having an influence on the result.

“I got warmed up nicely,” Cash said. “I had a few games where I’m in my peak and then I’m over it. And that was in the first 10 minutes. Then it was downhill.”

Cash had some interesting moments with the ballkids and line judges in the West Australian capital.

Australia’s Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt was also on court but on the opposite side of the country, partnering young gun Jordan Thompson at the Brisbane International.

Unfortunately, the homegrown talents couldn’t get it done against Grigor Dimitrov and Ryan Harrison, who won the round of 16 clash 6-3 1-6 (10-5).

AWKWARD BLUNDER MOCKED

Denis Shapovalov is one of the brightest young stars around but he’s not a household name just yet — that much was evident when he was welcomed to the court ahead of his first round clash with Great Britain’s Kyle Edmund at the Brisbane International.

The man with the microphone stumbled over his pronunciation of the Canadian’s name when he was in the tunnel waiting to come out.

The 18-year-old saw the funny side of it, as did women’s world No. 19 Madison Keys.

Canadian tennis writer Tom Tebbutt and Australian scribe Matt Trollope both mocked the announcer for getting Shapovalov’s name so wrong.

Edmund withstood a barrage of 18 aces from Shapovalov to win in three sets 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-4) 6-4.

MURRAY’S EMOTIONAL POST

Andy Murray is in grave doubt for the Australian Open and contemplating surgery on his troublesome hip after the former world No. 1’s withdrawal from the Brisbane International.

The three-time grand slam champion was to be the second seed at the Brisbane event but pulled out after failing to train on Tuesday.

The world No. 16 had hoped to play his first tournament match since July on Thursday — a second-round clash with American Ryan Harrison at Pat Rafter Arena. However, the 30-year-old again succumbed to a right hip injury that has kept him out of tournament play since Wimbledon.

In a lengthy and emotional Instagram post on Tuesday night — with a picture of him as a child — Murray said he was “really hurting inside” but would stay in Australia and decide his next move by the weekend.

“I’ve obviously been going through a really difficult period with my hip for a long time and have sought council from a number of hip specialists. Having been recommended to treat my hip conservatively since the US Open I have done everything asked of me from a rehab perspective and worked extremely hard to try get back on the court competing,” Murray wrote.

“Having played practice sets here in Brisbane with some top players unfortunately this hasn’t worked yet to get me to the level I would like so I have to reassess my options.

“Obviously continuing rehab is one option and giving my hip more time to recover. Surgery is also an option but the chances of a successful outcome are not as I high as I would like which has made this my secondary option and my hope has been to avoid that. However this is something I may have to consider but let’s hope not.”

Barring a miraculous recovery in the coming days, Murray looks destined to join fellow “Big Four” members Rafael Nadal (back) and Novak Djokovic (elbow) in missing the year’s opening grand slam in Melbourne starting on January 15.

Murray, the 2012 Brisbane champion, posted a photo of himself as a child and said the “little kid inside me just wants to play tennis and compete.

“I genuinely miss it so much and I would give anything to be back out there.

“I didn’t realise until these last few months just how much I love this game.

“Every time I wake up from sleeping or napping I hope that it’s better and it’s quite demoralising when you get on the court it’s not at the level you need it to be to compete at this level.

“Sorry for the long post but I wanted to keep everyone in the loop and get this off my chest as it’s really hurting inside.”

Alarm bells were ringing for Murray when he made his long awaited return to court and lost 6-2 to world No. 20 Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain in a one-set exhibition match in Abu Dhabi last week.

Then the Scot — initially expected in Brisbane before Christmas — delayed his arrival in Queensland in another indication his fitness was not 100 per cent. It leaves the Brisbane International largely bereft of star power after the withdrawal of Rafael Nadal last week.
