After two decades, Mike Henry is stepping down as the voice of Family Guy‘s Cleveland Brown, the actor announced on Twitter. “It’s been an honor to play Cleveland on Family Guy for 20 years,” Henry tweeted on Friday. “I love this character, but persons of color should play characters of color. Therefore, I will be stepping down from the role.” Henry, who is not Black, has voiced Cleveland, who is Black, since the character was introduced in Family Guy‘s 1999 series premiere. He also headlined The Cleveland Show for four seasons (2009–2013) on Fox. Cleveland now joins a growing list of high-profile animated characters that have been recast this week. Jenny Slate announced on Wednesday that she will no longer voice biracial tween Missy on Netflix’s Big Mouth, while Kristen Bell is also being recast as the voice of a young biracial character on Apple TV+’s Central Park. See Henry’s announcement in full below: UPDATE: Fox on Friday released a statement announcing that The Simpsons “will no longer have white actors voice non-white characters.”

SITTING for too long may increase a middle-aged person’s risk of dementia no matter how much they exercise, scientists have warned.![]()
Joey, 13, and Billy, 11, disappeared while heading to explore a small, nearby cave in Missouri, and Craig, 14, may have been with them. None of them returned home and they were all good friends, so it’s possible they were together. No one can confirm much of what actually happened, which has made the case very difficult to solve.

]]>
‘He’s a warrior. A real fighter.’ These all-too-common battle metaphors are regularly aimed at people trying to get through a cancer diagnosis. While the words may be well-intentioned, doctors say they can often do more harm than good.
]]>At least two people, a Syrian teenager among them, were injured in a brawl involving about 70 troublemakers in Dresden, Germany, according to reports, citing police.
Most of those involved in the incident “apparently come from the North African/Arab region,” police said, as quoted by DPA.
Local residents reportedly called police after 8pm, shooting videos on their phones of the violent scenes at the Alaunplatz.
A knife and a broken beer bottle were among the weapons used, police said.
The two injured, a 15-year-old Syrian and a 20-year-old Iraqi, were treated for cuts at the hospital.
Most of the rioters escaped before the police arrived. According to law enforcement, it is so far unclear what was behind the mass brawl and who caused it.
On Sunday morning, one person was killed and four wounded, including a police officer, after a gunman opened fire at a nightclub in Konstanz, southwestern Germany.
The 34-year-old gunman, an Iraqi citizen, was fatally wounded in an exchange of fire with the police, later dying in the hospital.

One person was killed and several others injured in a bloody knife attack at a supermarket in Hamburg on Friday. The 26-year-old suspect, whose asylum claim had been rejected, was arrested, with Hamburg Interior Minister Andy Grote later saying that the man was actually known to authorities as an Islamist.
The suspect, born in the United Arab Emirates, was known to have been radicalized, but had not been considered dangerous for some reason.
He was “mentally unstable,” the minister said.

Maura Murray was 21 when she lost control of her car and crashed into a snowbank. Another driver stopped and asked if she needed help, but she said no, she’d called the AAA. They drove off, deciding to call the police anyway.
Ten minutes later, when the police arrived, the car was locked and Murray was gone. There were no footprints in the snow, sniffer dogs couldn’t get a scent on her, and a heat-seeking helicopter spotted nothing.
Strange details began to emerge. Murray, a straight-A nursing student, had withdrawn $ 280 from her account and emailed her teacher saying she’d have to miss class because there’d been a death in the family (there hadn’t). Her cards and phone, a route map to Vermont, and a wine box were found in the back of the car, with red wine splashed on the outside. Back in Murray’s dorm room, her belongings were found packed up in boxes.
But despite the leads, detectives made little progress, and there have been no credible sightings of Maura Murray since the night she disappeared.

An experimental gene therapy that turns a patient’s own blood cells into cancer killers worked in a major study, with more than one-third of very sick lymphoma patients showing no sign of disease six months after a single treatment, its maker said Tuesday.
In all, 82 percent of patients had their cancer shrink at least by half at some point in the study.
Its sponsor, California-based Kite Pharma, is racing Novartis AG to become the first to win approval of the treatment, called CAR-T cell therapy, in the U.S. It could become the nation’s first approved gene therapy.
A hopeful sign: the number in complete remission at six months — 36 percent — is barely changed from partial results released after three months, suggesting this one-time treatment might give lasting benefits for those who do respond well.
“This seems extraordinary … extremely encouraging,” said one independent expert, Dr. Roy Herbst, cancer medicines chief at the Yale Cancer Center.
The worry has been how long Kite’s treatment would last and its side effects, which he said seem manageable in the study. Follow-up beyond six months is still needed to see if the benefit wanes, Herbst said, but added, “this certainly is something I would want to have available.”
The therapy is not without risk. Three of the 101 patients in the study died of causes unrelated to worsening of their cancer, and two of those deaths were deemed due to the treatment.
It was developed at the government’s National Cancer Institute and then licensed to Kite. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helped sponsor the study.
Results were released by the company and have not been published or reviewed by other experts. Full results will be presented at the American Association for Cancer Research conference in April.
The company plans to seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration by the end of March and in Europe later this year.
The treatment involves filtering a patient’s blood to remove key immune system soldiers called T-cells, altering them in the lab to contain a gene that targets cancer, and giving them back intravenously. Doctors call it a “living drug” — permanently altered cells that multiply in the body into an army to fight the disease.
Patients in the study had one of three types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a blood cancer, and had failed all other treatments. Median survival for such patients has been about six months.
Kite study patients seem to be living longer, but median survival isn’t yet known. With nearly nine months of follow-up, more than half are still alive.
Six months after treatment, 41 percent still had a partial response (cancer shrunk at least in half) and 36 percent were in complete remission (no sign of disease).
“The numbers are fantastic,” said Dr. Fred Locke, a blood cancer expert at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa who co-led the study and has been a paid adviser to Kite. “These are heavily treated patients who have no other options.”
One of his patients, 43-year-old Dimas Padilla of Orlando, was driving when he got a call saying his cancer was worsening, chemotherapy was no longer working, and there was no match to enable a second try at a stem cell transplant.
“I actually needed to park … I was thinking how am I going to tell this to my mother, my wife, my children,” he said. But after CAR-T therapy last August, he saw his tumors “shrink like ice cubes” and is now in complete remission.
“They were able to save my life,” Padilla said.
Of the study participants, 13 percent developed a dangerous condition where the immune system overreacts in fighting the cancer, but that rate is lower than in some other tests of CAR-T therapy. The rate fell during the study as doctors got better at detecting and treating it sooner.
Roughly a third of patients developed anemia or other blood-count-related problems, which Locke said were easily treated. And 28 percent had neurological problems such as sleepiness, confusion, tremor or difficulty speaking, but these typically lasted just a few days, Locke said.
“It’s a safe treatment, certainly a lot safer than having progressive lymphoma,” and comparable to combination chemotherapy in terms of side effects, said the cancer institute’s Dr. Steven Rosenberg, who had no role in Kite’s study. The first lymphoma patient Rosenberg treated this way, a Florida man, is still in remission seven years later.
There were no cases of swelling and fluid in the brain in this or any other study testing Kite’s treatment, company officials said. That contrasts with Juno Therapeutics, which has had a CAR-T study put on hold twice after five patient deaths due to this problem.
Company officials would not say what the treatment might cost, but other types of immune system therapies have been very expensive. It’s also being tested for some other types of blood cancer.

]]>This raises a host of interesting economic questions. Is geographic mobility related to social or economic mobility? Do people who move get better jobs? Better pay? If so, for whom?
Since early career success is a major factor in determining lifetime earnings, these considerations, whether to move and where, are especially pressing for young Americans who came of working age during or immediately after the Great Recession. For this group, small salary changes can make a big difference down the road, and the positive effects of securing a good job can accumulate over decades, as the effects of losing a job can too.
A new study sheds light on the importance of location, looking at whether a worker’s proximity to his or her parents affects long-term earnings following the loss of a job. To study this, the researchers compared the earnings of people who lost their jobs with parents nearby versus those whose parents lived farther away. The researchers looked at data collected from roughly 35,000 people from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, the longest running longitudinal household survey in the world, between 1968 and 2013. Parental proximity certainly matters for something: For example, it was found that people who live outside their parents’ neighborhood tend to, on average, be younger, be more educated, and earn significantly more than those who stayed in their parents’ orbits.
As for whether proximity to one’s parents affected long-term earnings following a job loss, the researchers looked at workers who were employed full-time for at least two years and then lost their jobs due to layoffs or closings. They found an interesting pattern that held for young adults between the ages of 25 and 35: Those who lived away from their parents saw a large decline in earnings of $ 15,000 a year on average, and that’s just right after losing their jobs. Even after 10 years, they failed to catch up to peers who didn’t suffer a job loss during that crucial period. For those who lived near their parents, the story was different: Their earnings took a big initial hit as well after a job loss—around $ 10,000, on average. But importantly, their earnings recovered and caught up with their continuously employed peers within five years. And for older adults, aged 36 to 55, living close to or far from one’s parents tended not to make a difference.
One reason this might be the case is that those living close to their parents are working lower-paying jobs—if they’re making less to begin with, it’s easier to return to where they were. This hypothesis isn’t explored in detail in the paper, though the researchers note that this phenomenon could in principle account for why those living close to their parents see their wages bounce back.
The study’s authors mention a couple of other reasons why having parents nearby might result in better financial outcomes for young adults who lost their jobs: First, parents might be providing “informal insurance” when their adult children become unemployed, in the form of child care, food, or housing. That in turn could provide the resources necessary for a more ambitious job search, giving their kids the support to get back on the right track instead of having to take lower-paying jobs to get by. Second, living in one’s parents’ community likely means a better social network to locate job openings. And lastly, parents can provide emotional support, which may also aid the job search process.
Whatever the explanation, the researchers explained that proximity to parents is an important component of thinking about why Americans move. “Although this correlation does not demonstrate causality, our findings suggest that parents play an important role in adult children’s labor market outcomes and that family connections are, therefore, potentially important for the labor market decisions of adult children,” they wrote in the paper. They added that the earnings pattern they documented might “explain [young people’s] sometimes surprising reluctance to move, especially among those who are less educated.” There’s no one explanation for why Americans aren’t moving as much as they used to, but this data points at a possible cause.
]]>The ‘Indicators of Mobilization to Violence’ survey, obtained by the Intercept in a classified FBI document, has reportedly been used by the FBI since the fall of 2015.
In a series of 48 questions, the survey assigns points based on certain factors. There are six categories: background, ideology, research and planning, social, training and preparation, and travel.
Some of the questions seem logical for the agency to ask, such as if the suspect has “articulated a desire to conduct violent jihad,” whether they have “participated in gatherings where plotting violence is discussed,” or are a “regular consumer of extremist propaganda.”
Others focus on the subject’s emotional state, such as whether there has been a significant change in their behavior, or there has been a sudden withdrawal from their day-to-day activities.
However, other questions are extremely ordinary, including whether the person has experienced a “recent personal loss” including a death, break-up, divorce, or loss of job. Another asks whether the suspect has sought employment in an occupation with sensitive access, such as an airport or law enforcement facilities.
Of particular note is question 42, which asks whether the suspect has participated in activities which “simulate military or operational environments,” including paintball, laser tag, or camping/survival trips – a question which a large number of Boy Scouts, teens, or outdoor enthusiasts would undoubtedly answer in the affirmative.
The document explains that all FBI agents working on counter-terrorism cases are required to fill out the survey through the agency’s case management system, and update answers as they learn of new information.
Once the agent has submitted the answers, the survey generates scores on a scale of 0-100, which show “the subject’s level of mobilization or likelihood of carrying out a violent act,” as well as their “likely level of radicalization or internal commitment to violent ideology.”
The overall score, according to the FBI, is calculated via “statistical methodology” which compares the subject’s situation with historical counter-terrorism cases.
However, the agency stresses that high scores “do not provide conclusive evidence that a subject will take violent action,” and should be used for comparative purposes only.
The document also states that anonymized data from the survey will be shared with defense partners in the so-called ‘Five Eyes Alliance’, consisting of the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The FBI declined to answer the Intercept’s specific questions about the document, but stated that “these surveys are but one part of our internal assessment process in counter-terrorism cases.”
Despite the agency’s efforts at identifying terrorist suspects before they launch any potential attacks, a recent study published by the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism says such efforts are largely futile.
“The factors that come out over and over again as risk factors for radicalization are things that are present in the lives of millions of people who will never radicalize,” Michael Jensen, one of the report’s authors, told the Intercept. “There’s just not going to be a simple checklist of warning signs for future violence.”
The survey report comes as President Donald Trump continues his vow to fight extreme Islamic terrorism in the US, promising to fight for his travel ban on citizens from seven mainly-Muslim countries to be upheld.
On Thursday, the US Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit refused to reinstate the travel ban, which had previously been suspended by a lower judge. The case is likely to be appealed until it reaches the Supreme Court.
