And now whistleblowers have revealed Facebook has been allegedly collecting data on phone calls and text messages on Android smartphones between November 2016 and July 2017.

In response to the Cambridge Analytic scandal, Facebook’s CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg personally addressed the issue.

He said in a public statement: “We have a responsibility to protect your data, and if we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

“The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it.”

The company also addressed allegations it stored phone calls and text messages by underlying logged information was an entirely optional feature for people using Messenger or Facebook Lite on Android.

The company said: “When this feature is enabled, uploading your contacts also allows us to use information like when a call or text was made or received.

“This feature does not collect the content of your calls or text messages.

Remember that once you decide to delete your account, there is no going back, and there is still some information that Facebook will hold once your account is gone.

However according to the social media giant, whatever information remains is “disassociated from personal identifiers”.

Facebook said: “Some of the things you do on Facebook aren’t stored in your account.

“For example, a friend may still have messages from you even after you delete your account. That information remains after you delete your account.”

4. Follow the steps through once you have decided you are ready to take a break from social media.

If at any point in the future you fee ready to reactive your account, you will simply need to log back into Facebook with your email and password. You can do this whenever you are ready.

By deactivating your account, your Timeline will remain hidden to others and your page will not be listed in the search results tab but any messages you have sent in the past will remain visible.

The Cinefamily shut down is now permanent. The Los Angeles independent film venue is shuttering its doors for good following various sexual misconduct allegations. Cinefamily had temporarily suspended operations in August in the wake of sexual harassment reports. Now, the Cinefamily board will dissolve and Silent Movie Theater, Cinefamily’s longtime home, will be renovated.

Cinefamily is no more. The non-profit independent film venue, which set out to “reinvigorate the movie-going experience by fostering a spirit of community and a sense of discovery” starting in 2007, is shutting down. Variety reports that board of directors issued a statement claiming that the “damage caused to the organization by the conduct of some and the crippling debt now facing the Cinefamily are, in the Board’s view, irreparable.” A combination of scandal and money woes led to the shuttering.

In September 2017, Cinefamily suspended all activities in light of allegations of sexual harassment that resulted in the exit of top executives Hadrian Belove and Shadie Elnashai. The allegations stem arose from an anonymous email detailing 2014 sexual harassment allegations against Belove and accused Elnashai, vice president of the board of directors, of “raping multiple women.”

After the story broke, internal emails were provided to BuzzFeed that revealed female Cinefamily employees complained about further sexual misconduct related to Cinefamily, including a patron who made women uncomfortable, In the wake of the allegations, actress Brie Larson, who sat on the Cinefamily’s advisory board, issued the following statement on social media:

Cinefamily closed-up shop in the wake of these stories, and now any hope of the venue returning has been dashed. In the statement announcing the end of Cinefamily, the board of directors wrote:

“While no victims emerged to corroborate the allegation of rape widely circulated in an anonymous email, the investigation identified serious concerns, including breaches of acceptable behavior alleged to have happened at Cinefamily offices and events; a climate that discouraged employees and volunteers from reporting distressing workplace incidents and/or made them feel unheard if they did so; and critical lapses in communication from the executive management to the Board.”

Variety reports that Silent Movie Theater, the longtime Cinefamily venue, will now be renovated by the landlord, and that the board will establish a transition team that will handle any lingering financial and legal affairs. The Cinefamily allegations are just another terrible addition to a constantly-expanding list of sexual misconduct allegations rooted deep within the entertainment community and beyond, from Hollywood to theater chains and more. While it is a tragedy that these deeds were committed and kept in the dark for so long, the fact that they are finally coming to light is hopefully a real sign of change in the industry. Hopefully a new organization can purchase the Silent Movie Theater now and convert it into what it always should’ve been: a place for a non-toxic community to gather and appreciate film.

Google is permanently disabling a feature on the forthcoming Google Home Mini smart speaker, after a reviewer discovered that it was surreptitiously recording his conversations without his knowledge or consent. 

The issue, says Google, was that the button on top of the device was faulty and would sometimes activate on its own. In response, Google acknowledged that this bug affected a small number of units, and issued a software update that would disable that button entirely, for all users, while it explored a long-term fix.

Now, that change will be permanent.

Here’s Google’s statement:

“We take user privacy and product quality concerns very seriously. Although we only received a few reports of this issue, we want people to have complete peace of mind while using Google Home Mini.

We have made the decision to permanently remove all top touch functionality on the Google Home Mini. As before, the best way to control and activate Google Home Mini is through voice, by saying “Ok Google” or “Hey Google,” which is already how most people engage with our Google Home products. You can still adjust the volume by using the touch control on the side of the device.”

TV presenter Alison has revealed she is looking forward to teaming up with Rylan again to co-present the show while Holly and Phillip take a break.

The 42-year-old host also announced whether she would consider replacing the daytime pair on a permanent basis.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Alison said: “Do you know what, I’d never say never. We’re actually doing another one on the 29th I think. Bank holiday.

“So I never say never. Me and Rylan… the partnership will be reunited on the 29th of this month.

It comes as Phillip Schofield revealed whether he would be tuning in when the pair host the flagship show once again.

He said: “No, because I’ll be in Los Angeles and I won’t care.”

The presenter believes that the programme is being left in capable hands as both he and Holly have co-presented with Rylan before.

“Let’s not forget, I did a show with Rylan,” he continued to OK! magazine. “So Rylan and I presented the show together and he’s brilliant at it. He’ll be just great.”

ExtraTorrent shut itself down this week. It was the second-largest torrent site after The Pirate Bay, known best for its massive index of entertainment content downloadable using the BitTorrent protocol. Despite the inevitable rumors, there is no reason to believe the site will be making a return.

The site was taken down with little explanation. ExtraTorrent’s administrators did not give a warning and simply took the service offline, leaving a short message behind telling users that all data will be erased and warning them to stay away from the expected clones that will show up in the weeks to come:

We may never know the cause of the abrupt shut down, but it’s likely legal pressure played a role. Either the administrators were threatened or they grew tired of playing the cat-and-mouse game. All its domains (including extratorrent.cc, extratorrent.one, and extra.to) redirect to the same message.

In November 2015, ExtraTorrent lost three of its domain names it used for mirrors, although it ended up quickly replacing them with new ones. But there was an even more recent event: In March 2017, the site’s main domain name was shut down by its registrar. Although its backup domains continued to function, it’s possible ExtraTorrent decided enough was enough.

A number of popular torrent sites have been taken offline in the past year, including Torrentz and KickassTorrents (KAT). The former was shut down by its operators in August 2016 after 13 years of service. KAT went down in July 2016 after 8 years of operation, following the arrest of its founder. The Pirate Bay remains the most resilient site, going strong for 14 years now.

Researchers have uncovered a rash of ongoing attacks designed to damage routers and other Internet-connected appliances so badly that they become effectively inoperable.

PDoS attack bots (short for “permanent denial-of-service”) scan the Internet for Linux-based routers, bridges, or similar Internet-connected devices that require only factory-default passwords to grant remote administrator access. Once the bots find a vulnerable target, they run a series of highly debilitating commands that wipe all the files stored on the device, corrupt the device’s storage, and sever its Internet connection. Given the cost and time required to repair the damage, the device is effectively destroyed, or bricked, from the perspective of the typical consumer.

Over a four-day span last month, researchers from security firm Radware detected roughly 2,250 PDoS attempts on devices they made available in a specially constructed honeypot. The attacks came from two separate botnets—dubbed BrickerBot.1 and BrickerBot.2—with nodes for the first located all around the world. BrickerBot.1 eventually went silent, but even now the more destructive BrickerBot.2 attempts a log-on to one of the Radware-operated honeypot devices roughly once every two hours. The bots brick real-world devices that have the telnet protocol enabled and are protected by default passwords, with no clear sign to the owner of what happened or why.
