Former President Donald Trump on Thursday lashed out once again at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
During an appearance on the conservative medial channel Real America's Voice, Trump was asked to respond to McConnell's hint in August that the GOP might not win the Senate because of the quality of Trump-backed candidates.
"He's such a negative for the party," Trump said, adding that he was "embarrassed" by McConnell.
"I would've run somebody against him in the primary. But, who would've known that he turned out so bad? And I was never a big fan, but he turned out bad," the former president said.
Trump also alluded again to the idea that he wanted to replace McConnell as Senate GOP leader.
"He's not good, and we're gonna go through him, and then we'll have to do something, later on, we'll have to do something with him," Trump said.
"The party is furious at him. We have to put up with him for a period of time, but eventually, he'll be gone," Trump added. "He's bad news."
A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office and representatives for McConnell did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Insider.
Trump's comments came the same day that Sen. Rick Scott of Florida revived his ongoing rivalry with McConnell for criticizing the GOP's "candidate quality."
Scott said he had a "strategic disagreement" with McConnell during an interview with Politico that was published on Thursday. Scott also wrote in an op-ed in the Washington Examiner that the idea of "trash-talking" GOP candidates was "an amazing act of cowardice" and "treasonous to the conservative cause."
Trump, too, has rebuked McConnell for questioning the quality of the GOP candidates he's backed, calling him a "pawn for the Democrats" and calling for him to be replaced as GOP leader.
The origins of the McConnell-Trump feud date back to February 2021, when McConnell rebuked Trump for his "disgraceful dereliction of duty" during the Capitol riot. Since then, Trump repeatedly attacked McConnell.
In November, Trump slammed McConnell and other Republicans who backed President Joe Biden's infrastructure bill, calling them "RINOs," an acronym for Republicans In Name Only. Trump has also called McConnell an "Old Crow" on several occasions and accused the latter of "jeopardizing" other Republican senators' reelection chances.
In February, McConnell shrugged off rumors that Trump might succeed in an attempt to oust him as majority leader if the GOP were to take the Senate in the November midterms. The comments came after Trump called McConnell a "loser" for defending GOP Sen. Mike Rounds of South Dakota, who had contradicted Trump's voter fraud claims.
Last month, Trump also called McConnell's wife, former Transport Secretary Elaine Chao, "crazy" and "coco" in several Truth Social posts. McConnell, however, did not react to Trump's insult, saying he had "no" response to the criticism.

]]>Bilge Ebiri tracks the rest of the unfinished Orson Welles filmography.
When Netflix financed and released the 40-plus-years-in-the-making The Other Side of the Wind, outlets a-plenty (including this one) described it as Orson Welles’ final feature. But that’s not exactly true; Welles left behind several productions in various stages of completion (or lack thereof), and Ebiri details all of them for Vulture.
The Deep (started 1966)
Here’s another full feature that Welles shot over some years (from 1966–69) but never finished editing. Which is ironic because he had hoped that this one would be a more commercial movie: It’s an adaptation of Charles Williams’s novel Dead Calm — the same story that inspired the 1989 Nicole Kidman–Sam Neill–Billy Zane thriller — starring Welles himself, Jeanne Moreau, Laurence Harvey, Michael Bryant, and Oja Kodar. One of the major impediments to finalizing the film has been that many of the main actors are dead — Harvey died in 1973 — and a lot of their dialogue was never properly recorded. Additionally, the negatives have been lost, and the only surviving versions appear to be rough cuts Welles worked on but never finished over the years. A work print assembled by the Munich Film Museum screened at MoMA in 2015, but in order for this ever to be completed properly, a major undertaking would be needed — perhaps even more ambitious than what Netflix has done with The Other Side of the Wind.
Reeves Wiedeman tells a suburban haunted house story.
We all love movies like The Amityville Horror and Poltergeist, in which families are shocked to discover the dark secrets of their family home. At The Cut, Wiedman has a creepy real-life variation: a family buys their dream home, sets about getting it ready for their family, and then… the anonymous letters begin to arrive:
The letter identified the Broadduses’ Honda minivan, as well as the workers renovating the home. “I see already that you have flooded 657 Boulevard with contractors so that you can destroy the house as it was supposed to be,” the person wrote. “Tsk, tsk, tsk … bad move. You don’t want to make 657 Boulevard unhappy.” Earlier in the week, Derek and Maria had gone to the house and chatted with their new neighbors while their children, who were 5, 8, and 10 years old, ran around the backyard with several kids from the neighborhood. The letter writer seemed to have noticed. “You have children. I have seen them. So far I think there are three that I have counted,” the anonymous correspondent wrote, before asking if there were “more on the way”:
Do you need to fill the house with the young blood I requested? Better for me. Was your old house too small for the growing family? Or was it greed to bring me your children? Once I know their names I will call to them and draw them too [sic] me.
The envelope had no return address. “Who am I?” the person wrote. “There are hundreds and hundreds of cars that drive by 657 Boulevard each day. Maybe I am in one. Look at all the windows you can see from 657 Boulevard. Maybe I am in one. Look out any of the many windows in 657 Boulevard at all the people who stroll by each day. Maybe I am one.” The letter concluded with a suggestion that this message would not be the last — “Welcome my friends, welcome. Let the party begin” — followed by a signature typed in a cursive font: “The Watcher.”
Kaitlyn Tiffany on the period-tracking app industry.
“A cartoon cloud told me I might be pregnant,” begins Tiffany’s Vox explainer of the problems with the existing smartphone technology created to help women track their cycles — but created mostly by men, and from their limited perspective:
There’s a handful of fancy, venture-funded period-tracking apps. And there are hundreds of free, ad-supported, easy-to-use apps that track menstruation and fertility and simultaneously invite users to track their diet, their workouts, their sex lives, their mood, the state of their skin, the smell of their vaginal discharge. They are mostly glitchy and cheaply made, and the result of opportunists seeing a need and kind of, not really, fulfilling it.
In the health category, this type of app is reportedly the fourth most popular among adults and second most popular among adolescent women. My floating cloud app was one of these junky, generic options, and the choice to download it was not an educated one; it was just whatever the App Store guessed I would want when I typed in “period tracking” more than four years ago.
This app wasn’t designed for me. It wasn’t designed for anyone who wants to track their period or general reproductive health. The same is true of almost every menstruation-tracking app: They’re designed for marketers, for men, for hypothetical unborn children, and perhaps weirdest of all, a kind of voluntary surveillance stance.
David Roth on the big, wet president.
And finally, coming off one of the most spectacularly failure-filled weeks of the Donald Trump presidency — and that’s saying something — Deadspin’s Roth gave us one of the most succinctly accurate and darkly funny summaries of the man (such as he is) and his politics (such as they are) to date:
His politics, to the extent that they’ve ever been legible, have always been off-the-rack big city tabloid bullshit—crudely racist exterminate the brutes/back the blue authoritarianism in the background and ruthless petty rich person squabbling in the front. His actions since becoming president have been those of a dim, cruel child playacting at being a powerful man—giving orders without quite knowing what they mean or how they might be carried out, taunting enemies, beating up the people he can afford to beat up without having to be called to account for it, lying as needed or just for yuks. He hasn’t changed a thing since graduating from punchline to president. It’s been clear for decades that Trump was both an asshole and a dummy; this is now a problem not just for the odd unlucky cocktail waitress and his staff of cheesy apparatchiks but for literally every person on earth.
Presidents exert a kind of ambient influence on the culture, but as Trump is different than previous presidents his influence necessarily feels different. Barack Obama wanted to be a cosmopolitan leader who brought people together and into a deeper empathy through a mastery of reason and rules; the country he governed doesn’t work like that, though, and the tension between that cool vision and this seething reality grew and grew. By the end, his presidency had the feeling of a prestige television show in its fifth season—handsomely produced and reliably well-performed but ultimately not really as sure what it was about as it first appeared to be. Trump has no such pretense or noble aspiration, and has only made the country more like himself; living in his America feels like being trapped in a garish casino that is filling with seawater, because that is what it is.

Winnipeg Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck didn't mind the expanded workload on Thursday night.
Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler and Kyle Connor each had a goal and an assist, and the Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 5-1.
Adam Lowry and Brandon Tanev also scored and Mark Scheifele had a pair of assists as the Jets won their fifth season opener in six years. Hellebuyck made 41 saves and improved to 5-2 against St. Louis in his career.
"I was having some fun out there, I was enjoying everything," Hellebuyck said. "The guys made it so easy on me. I was able to square up and do my job. I think that's the key."
Lowry's unassisted short-handed goal at 5:51 of the third began a Winnipeg three-goal outburst in a span of 1 minute, 44 seconds to put away the game. Lowry's breakaway came moments after Hellebuyck stoned Alexander Steen on a power-play chance.
Watch highlights of Winnipeg's win:
"He was unreal, just ridiculous," Laine said of Hellebuyck. "Watching from the bench those saves he made. He was really good tonight and I think he was easily the best player on the ice tonight."
Wheeler scored 64 seconds later and Connor tipped one past Jake Allen at 7:35 to complete the flurry.
"It didn't take too long," Blues coach Mike Yeo said. "It's a breakdown that turns into another breakdown that turns into another breakdown. That can't happen. At a point when we needed to keep pushing and find another level to our game, we took a step back."
The Jets outscored the Blues 4-1 in the third period, despite getting outshot 20-8. Jets coach Paul Maurice gave the credit to Hellebuyck.
"Most of it was short-handed but you need your goaltender to be that good and he had a number of really good saves," Maurice said. "You get a guy like that playing that kind of game, it inspires you to push a little harder. He had to be real good."
The Jets have won nine of their last 11 against the Blues and have outscored St. Louis 36-19 during that span.
Vince Dunn scored late in the third period and Allen made 20 saves as the Blues lost their season opener for the first time in four years.
Laine gave the Jets a 1-0 lead four minutes into the game with a power-play goal that deflected off of Blues defenceman Colton Parayko and past Allen.
"I felt really good during the game," Laine said. "I was able to create some good chances. I think it was a pretty good first game."
Hellebuyck made 22 saves in the first two periods, including a big blocker save on Ryan O'Reilly's power-play chance late in the second, and got help from his post twice in the first.
"It was tough to crack him," O'Reilly said. "It happens some nights, but you've got to push through it and find a way to put it in."

Pompeo launched another verbal assault against the Iranian leadership as the first part of reintroduced US sanctions kicks in on Monday. The penalties affect existing contracts between foreign companies, which flooded the Islamic Republic after the 2015 nuclear deal, and Tehran.
Calling the Iranian government “bad actors,” Pompeo stressed that the sweeping sanctions that are to hit Iran are necessary to make it“behave like a normal country.” He added that it would “require enormous change” on Iran’s part for the US to review its increasingly hostile approach to Tehran.
Until that happens, the sanctions will be enforced rigorously, the US top diplomat said, as cited by AP.
Announcing the US’ withdrawal from the landmark nuclear accord in May, US President Donald Trump promised to bring the US sanctions on Iran, part of which had been lifted under the deal, to the “highest level.”
Washington gave companies, many of which are European, from 90 to 180 days to terminate existing contracts and leave Iran for good unless they want to be subjected to secondary US sanctions.
“For contracts that already exist, there is a wind-down period to allow an orderly termination of the contract, so that people who in good-faith reliance on the waiver of the sanctions — have engaged in business are not totally surprised,” the US President’s National Security Adviser John Bolton explained at the time.
Washington’s decision to quit the universally acclaimed agreement was only praised by Israel, a vociferous critic of the deal since its inception. All signatories to the accord, including the closest US allies in Europe – the UK, France and Germany, – have disapproved of the move, pointing out the absence of a viable alternative to the agreement and Iran’s full compliance with its terms, as repeatedly certified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Shortly after exiting the agreement, the US penned a 12-point ultimatum to Iran, that, among other things, demanded it ends its ballistic missile program, a condition repeatedly rejected by Tehran.
Last Monday, Trump hinted he was open to talks with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani with “no preconditions,” however, the offer was turned down by Rouhani, who said he would not sit down with the US leader unless the US reenters the nuclear deal.

Enlarge / Two spaces are better. Well, at least to me. (credit: Nora Karol Photography/Getty Images)
In what may be one of the most controversial studies of the year, researchers at Skidmore College—clearly triggered by a change in the American Psychological Association (APA) style book—sought to quantify the benefits of two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. After conducting an eye-tracking experiment with 60 Skidmore students, Rebecca L. Johnson, Becky Bui, and Lindsay L. Schmitt found that two spaces at the end of a period slightly improved the processing of text during reading. The research was trumpeted by some press outlets as a vindication of two-spacers’ superiority.
For anyone who learned their keyboarding skills on a typewriter rather than a computer—and for the many who developed their keyboard muscle memory using software packages such as Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing—the double-space after the period is a deeply ingrained truth. While modern style, based on the fallacy that computer typography makes such double-spaces redundant and Paleolithic, has demanded the deprecation of the second tap of the space bar after a punctuation full-stop, many have openly resisted this heresy, believing that the extra space is a courtesy to the reader and enhances the legibility of the text.
Previous cognitive science research has been divided on the issue. Some research has suggested closer spacing of the beginning of a new sentence may allow a reader to capture more characters in their parafoveal vision—the area of the retina just outside the area of focus, or fovea—and thus start processing the information sooner (though experimental evidence of that was not very strong). Other prior research has inferred that an extra space prevents lateral interference in processing text, making it easier for the reader to identify the word in focus. But no prior research found by Johnson, Bui, and Schmitt actually measured reader performance with each typographic scheme.

After months of praise — calling him “smart“, congratulating his reelection, floating forming a “Cyber Security unit” — President Donald Trump finally called out Russian President Vladimir Putin by name on Twitter Sunday for the first time since taking office.
Trump placed part of the blame on Putin for the suspected chemical attack that killed at least 40 people in Douma, Syria on Saturday. Putin’s government has backed Syrian government forces for years, while the US has sided with the opposition rebels.See the rest of the story at Business Insider
