F1 is targeting net zero carbon emissions by the end of the decade and engine makers have been testing sustainable fuels over the last few years. F1 leaders are aiming to only use sustainable fuels in F1 cars by 2026. Race cars are only a small piece of the puzzle, though. Holding two dozen grands prix around the world requires shifting cars, parts and other materials between circuits, which generate more carbon emissions.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 team, however, has experimented with a way to reduce freight emissions. It used hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO 100) biofuel in 16 trucks as it moved operations between Spa, Zandvoort and Monza for the final three European grands prix of the season. Since those circuits are relatively close to each other, Mercedes didn't need to rely on, say, air freight to ship cars and components. That gave the team a good opportunity to test the biofuel, given a total driving distance of around 1,400 kilometers (870 miles). However, the team noted it needed to use diesel fuel for the last 20km (just over 12 miles) due to supply issues.

An analysis found that using HVO 100 reduced freight emissions by 89 percent. Overall, Mercedes saved 44,091kg (97,204 pounds) of carbon dioxide emissions, compared with solely using diesel for both journeys. It noted HVO 100 is derived from vegetable oils, waste oils and fats and that it's entirely free of fossil fuels. The fuel also produces less Nox and particulate emissions.

“Sustainability is at the heart of our operations. Trialing the use of biofuels for our land freight is another example of our commitment to embed sustainability in every decision we make and action we take," Mercedes F1 team principal Toto Wolff said. "We aim to be on the cutting edge of change and hope we can make the adoption of sustainable technology possible as we are all in the race towards a sustainable tomorrow.”

Other biofuels are being tested for use in Formula 1. Teams started using E10 biofuels (which contain 10 percent renewable ethanol) in F1 cars this season as part of the transition to fully sustainable fuels. While that's some distance away from employing fully sustainable fuels, the use of E10 and HVO 100 are positive steps toward making motorsport much healthier for the environment.

If you already have a Live package, it's worth noting that you can save 25 percent on upgrades as well. Ableton also offers the option to split the cost of Live over six months at the discounted rate.

Although students and educators can get Live for 40 percent off the regular price, it's not often that we see Ableton run sales on its products. This is likely the best deal you'll find on the DAW unless you're a teacher or in school. After all, Ableton typically sticks to the same 25 percent discount on Black Friday.

Again, it’s available at an all-time low price of $ 1,400, or 44 percent off the regular price. 

Finally, if you want a low-profile TV that also doubles as a picture frame and smart device, Samsung’s 55-inch Frame TV is priced at $ 980, another all-time low. It can rotate between portrait and landscape modes and display up to 1,400 works of art, while offering features like 4K upscaling, HDR, Alexa and Samsung’s Tizen smart TV interface.

The BBC  have today announced their 2019 salary list which shows the top earners at the corporation. 

Gary Lineker tops the list with a whopping £1.75million wage, which hasn’t changed since last year. 

However, there has undoubtedly been a rise in payment out to some stars.

BBC director general Tony Hall confirmed the total talent bill had risen by £10million, however, he argued that it was a smaller proportion of total programming costs. 

He wrote in a blog: “They would earn significantly more elsewhere – and recent departures to commercial rivals show this argument isn’t hollow.

“The simple truth is we have spent more than ever on content, but the amount we have spent proportionally on talent has come down.

“But more importantly, whenever we ask the public whether they want big stars on the BBC they say yes. They say yes because they are talented and entertaining. They also say yes as it means they are getting big value from the BBC.”

Furthermore, stars including Jeremy Vine, John Humphrys and Steve Wright have all taken pay cuts. 

Despite this, there are plenty of stars who have found their fortunes increase over the past year, including Zoe Ball and Sara Cox.

The salary list comes just weeks after the BBC confirmed it would be dropping free licence fees for the over-75s.

At the time, they said it was needed to ensure they didn’t compromise on output, with Hall adding: “This has not been an easy decision. Whilst we know that pensioner incomes have improved since 2000, we also know that for some the TV license is a lot of money.

“I believe we have reached the fairest judgement after weighing up all the different arguments. It would not be right simply to abolish all free licences. Equally it would not be right to maintain it in perpetuity given the very profound impact that would have on many BBC services.”

At the time, the move caused considerable controversy across the country, with the likes of Piers Morgan calling for the plan to be scrapped. 

Today, people have flocked to Twitter to comment on their feelings for the BBC’s pay rises considering the recent cuts.

One shared: “The BBC publicly demonstrates that it overpays all of its ‘Top Earners’ equally. I’m sure all of the over-75s think they’re worth every penny.”

Another added: “HOW CAN THE @bbc DEFEND ONE MILLION POUND WAGE PACKETS with plans to scrap free TV licences for over-75s.”

“An increase in salaries while the @BBC wants to make over 75s pay for a TV Licence. Typical public service Gravy Train,” said a third. 

Elsewhere on the list, women broke into the top ten for the first time. 

Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman bagged £370,000 and was eighth on the list of the top 10 earners.

She was joined by Zoe Ball, who earned the exact same figure while Vanessa Feltz came 10th, with £355,000 for her efforts on BBC Radio 2. 

The likes of Jo Whiley, Gabby Logan and Lauren Laverne have also seen their pay increase dramatically.

SpaceX will lay off up to 10 percent of its work force, the company said Friday evening. The company characterized the job cuts as “a strategic realignment,” designed to ensure it is positioned to succeed for the long term.

They were announced to employees Friday in an e-mail from company president and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell. The company has a work force of more than 6,000 employees.

“To continue delivering for our customers and to succeed in developing interplanetary spacecraft and a global space-based Internet, SpaceX must become a leaner company,” a company official said in a statement.

An internet traffic researcher in Russia says 10.7 million people visit adult websites at least once a month, spending, on average, 11 minutes per session. The audience may be much bigger however, according to PornHub data.

The report on the preferences of Russian porn lovers was prepared by the firm Mediascope for the news website RBC.ru. The firm monitored traffic of about a hundred sites hosting adult content, and favored by Russians.

According to the data, about 11.3 percent of adults in Russia hit one of the sites at least once a month over the year. Each day 1.6 million people visit porn sites. A daily session usually lasts about 11 minutes, the report said.

A typical consumer of adult content is male, in his late 20s or early 30s, has average or high income and no children of his own, the company added based on a poll it conducted in December.

There is a caveat, however. The Mediascope data was for desktop users only, with RBC presuming that mobile traffic to adult sites is more or less irrelevant. This could be wrong, judging by the annual report published by PornHub, a major porn site.

According to it, desktops indeed are popular among porn viewers in Russia, more so than in any other country analysed by PornHub. But the share of the platform was just 40 percent in 2018, down from 48 percent in 2017. If other adult websites get 60 percent of their traffic from mobile phones and tablets like PornHub does, the monthly audience would be almost 27 million in Russia.

PornHub also says Russians spend 7 minutes 48 seconds on average per visit – at least partially an indication of good internet bandwidth, rather than libido peculiarities in the country.

Elon Musk has talked about personally heading to Mars before, but how likely is he to make the trip, really? Well, he just put a number on it. In an interview for the Axios on HBO documentary series, Musk said there was a “70 percent” chance he’ll go to Mars. There have been a “recent number of breakthroughs” that have made it possible, he said. And as he hinted before, it’d likely be a one-way trip — he expects to “move there.”

The executive also rejected the idea that traveling to Mars could be an “escape hatch for the rich” in its current form. He noted that an ad for going to Mars would be “like Shackleton’s ad for going to the Antarctic,” which (though likely not real) made clear how dangerous and the South Pole journey was. Even if you make it to Mars, you’ll spend all your time building the base and struggling to survive harsh conditions, Musk said. And while it might be possible to come back, it’s far from guaranteed. As with climbing Everest, Musk believes it’s all about the “challenge.”

He might have some reasons to be optimistic. Much of his trust no doubt revolves around the Starship (née BFR) and his broader vision for Mars, but there has also been work on habitats, food and power sources that could make it viable to stay on the Red Planet for extended periods. While the ingredients haven’t all fallen into place, it may be more a question of when people can go rather than whether it’ll happen at all.

The wide campaign cash advantage means Democrats now have a 96.6 percent chance of retaking the House of Representatives — their strongest position yet, according to OZY’s exclusive election forecasting model in partnership with Republican data and technology firm 0ptimus. Democrats are projected to take 234 seats, a six-seat improvement over last week.

The Q3 reports are included in this update, and boy did they leave a dent.

They outraised Republicans by more than a 2-to-1 margin. There are still plausible simulations in our confidence interval with Republicans maintaining the House by one or two seats, but they are very unlikely as of now.”

But money isn’t everything. Republicans’ hold on the Senate took a bit of a dent, as they now have an 86.5 percent chance of capturing at least 50 seats for a majority, but we still project them to come away with 52 GOP senators come January. For example, Beto O’Rourke raised a stunning $ 38 million in Texas but still has just a 38.5 percent chance of taking out Republican incumbent Ted Cruz.

In partnership with Washington-based consulting firm 0ptimus, we crunched more than 100 factors that helped predict past elections, with extra weighting for unique aspects of this political year, to produce these forecasts. When compared with some other forecasting models, OZY and 0ptimus are more bullish on Democratic chances to seize the House in part because we give extra weight to small-dollar donations (a sign of a candidate’s grassroots enthusiasm) and put less emphasis on outside money (where Republicans continue to hold an advantage).

In addition to the money chase, generic ballot polls also improved this week for Democrats. The national political environment now favors them by 7.8 percentage points — Democrats’ first improvement after more than a month of Republican gains that coincided with the brutal fight over Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.

But this week’s movement was mostly about following the money. In all, 68 House seats moved by more than 5 percentage points and 21 moved by more than 10 percent — nearly all toward Democrats. With two weeks to go, there is still time for the political math to shift. In Republicans’ favor is an increasingly popular President Donald Trump, who, at 47 percent approval in the most recent NBC News poll, is in better political shape than Barack Obama at this point in 2010. And if we’ve learned anything in the past three years, it’s to expect the unexpected.

As part of our extensive on-the-ground coverage of races across the U.S. this year, OZY wanted to build a better product to analyze the national political picture — given the failure of such forecasts in the past. So we decided to team up with Washington-based 0ptimus, a Republican firm that developed an unbiased, nonpartisan prediction model to show its clients in both politics and finance where the winds appear to be blowing.

0ptimus’ data team created and tested countless models, crunching publicly available data against past results in House and Senate races. They take into account more than 100 variables, including past vote totals, generic ballot surveys of which party voters prefer in Congress, the unemployment rate, fundraising data and public polling. The firm developed an artificial intelligence system to “smartly” average together several models to produce the strongest prediction numbers for the 2018 elections, automatically testing against past elections to assess quality. Given the unique factors in 2018, we asked 0ptimus to tweak its calculations, adding weight to:

  • The number of small donations — a sign of energy for candidates from Trump to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
  • Gender — women are doing exceptionally well this year, and we expect that trend to continue.
  • Trump’s approval rating — he hangs over the political and media scene with a heavier presence than past presidents.

Meanwhile, we asked 0ptimus to reduce the weight for:

  • Candidate ideology — its calculations rewarded more moderate candidates, while we think this election year is all about firing up the base.
  • Outside money — as OZY has reported, advertising is less persuasive coming from a super PAC than from a candidate.

Because 0ptimus averages several models, it agreed to introduce a new Bayesian model into the mix just for OZY that includes Trump’s approval, gender and unitemized donations while removing one that included ideology and independent expenditures. The result is the numbers we update for you each week.
