  • North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he wants to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula during President Donald Trump’s first term.
  • Kim told South Korean officials that his faith in Trump remains “unchanged.”
  • Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will meet in the North Korean capital on September 18.

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said he wants to denuclearize the Korean peninsula during US President Donald Trump’s first term, as he agreed to hold a third summit with his South Korean counterpart this month in Pyongyang, Seoul officials said on Thursday.

Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will meet in the North Korean capital on Sept. 18-20, during which they will discuss “practical measures” toward denuclearization, the South’s national security adviser, Chung Eui-yong, told reporters a day after meeting Kim in Pyongyang.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi have agreed to “boost coordination and cooperation as well as to make efforts to reach denuclearization and enduring peace on the Korean Peninsula,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Lavrov’s meeting with the Chinese foreign minister in South Africa comes just days after the top diplomat met with the North Korean leadership, delivering a personal letter from President Vladimir Putin. While visiting Pyongyang, Lavrov welcomed North Korean diplomatic efforts, stressing that Russia will support any mutually-beneficial agreement that could be reached between Kim Jong-un and Donald Trump at their upcoming meeting in Singapore. Lavrov is now in Pretoria, South Africa, which is hosting the ministerial meeting of the BRICS nations

‘Nobody in their right mind would want war on Korean Peninsula’ – Lavrov to RT https://briefnews.eu/nobody-in-their-right-mind-would-want-war-on-korean-peninsula-lavrov-to-rt/ https://briefnews.eu/nobody-in-their-right-mind-would-want-war-on-korean-peninsula-lavrov-to-rt/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 10:02:03 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/nobody-in-their-right-mind-would-want-war-on-korean-peninsula-lavrov-to-rt/

Nobody in their right mind would want to start a war on the Korean Peninsula, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told RT in an exclusive interview, adding that Washington wants to strangle North Korea into submission.

“I don’t think that anyone who is in his right mind would like to start a war on the Korean Peninsula. Not only Russian, but also American experts and American officials voiced the assessments of the consequences [of the 1950-53 Korean conflict], including the enormous loss of human life,” Lavrov said in an interview with RT.

Moscow hopes that there are people in the US who understand the need “to defuse” the tension over North Korea and turn to a political and diplomatic solution, the foreign minister added.

Washington, Lavrov believes, wants to strangle North Korea until it submits. Moscow will not back such an approach and will continue to seek a way to integrate North Korea into the world community, not isolate it. “You can’t strangle North Korea. You can’t impose a total blockade,” he said.

In September, Moscow received a signal from Washington that the US wanted dialogue and that military drills on the Korean Peninsula would be postponed until spring 2018, Lavrov said. However, Washington later announced new military drills in autumn and North Korea responded to them “with a new missile.” The minister was referring to the North’s test of its Hwasong 15 rocket, which Pyongyang claimed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (IBCM).

“China and Russia proposed to have a double freeze plan [on North Korea]. North Korea won’t launch anything and test anything and the US won’t hold drills. But the US responded that it’s legitimate to have military exercises,” Lavrov said. The first step forward should be taken by the side which is stronger and smarter, the Russian diplomat noted.

“Together with China we believe that all these mutually-provocative actions need to be frozen. Dialogue must be started without any precondition,” he added.

An American B-1B Lancer strategic bomber and F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets accompanied by South Korean military aircraft have conducted simulated bombing drills in the skies over South Korea amid rising tensions on the peninsula, Yonhap News Agency says.

The maneuvers are part of the unprecedented joint air force Vigilant Ace 18 drills which kicked off Monday.

The drills staged by the US and South Korea feature hundreds of warplanes conducting mock attacks  on North Korean nuclear and missile objects in different war scenarios, but are claimed to be of a “defensive nature.”

On Wednesday, the US Air Force dispatched B-1B aircraft, F-22 Raptor fighter jets, as well as several F-35 stealth jets and F-16 fighter planes to take part in joint drills at the Pilsung Firing Range in Gangwon Province, Yonhap reports, citing the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Seoul sent F-15Ks and KF-16s to join the American squadron.

The total number of warplanes taking part in the maneuvers was not revealed, and there could be more than one B-1B bomber. But Washington usually sends two B-1Bs to the area.

It is the first time the fifth-generation jets joined the Vigilant Ace exercise.

Two “projectiles” have been fired from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula into Israel either late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, causing no injuries or damage, the IDF has confirmed. Rocket sirens rang at least three more times in the Eshkol region bordering Gaza, however the military is yet to confirm additional missile launches. The Israeli Defense Forces are now investigating the potential air defense breach and type of the projectile fired, since no explosions or impact were heard after the fact, according to Haaretz.

Tokyo and Seoul will fall first if there is war on Korean Peninsula – Lavrov https://briefnews.eu/tokyo-and-seoul-will-fall-first-if-there-is-war-on-korean-peninsula-lavrov/ https://briefnews.eu/tokyo-and-seoul-will-fall-first-if-there-is-war-on-korean-peninsula-lavrov/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 02:52:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tokyo-and-seoul-will-fall-first-if-there-is-war-on-korean-peninsula-lavrov/

Japan and South Korea, whom the US is trying to involve in provocations against North Korea, will become the first victims if conflict breaks out in the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has warned.

“While condemning Pyongyang’s nuclear missile adventurism, we cannot but condemn the provocative behavior of our American colleagues,” Lavrov said in an interview with Belarusian broadcaster STV. “Unfortunately, they are trying to drag the Japanese and South Koreans in the same direction, who… will be the first victims in the event of war on the Korean Peninsula.”

Earlier this week, North Korea carried out its first missile test in two months, firing an ICBM that allegedly can reach the US mainland. The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, reacted to the test by urging more sanctions against Pyongyang and threatening that “if war comes… the North Korean regime will be utterly destroyed.”

Lavrov reiterated that in September, the US made it clear that the next military exercises with South Korea were not to come until spring. Russia appreciated that and made efforts to work with Pyongyang to turn the lull into more lasting stability.

“There was a hint that in this situation, that this natural pause in the US-South Korean exercises could have been used by Pyongyang to avoid disturbing peace, as well, and conditions could be created for starting a dialogue,” the foreign minister said. Instead, the US suddenly announced it would be holding the drills in October, then November, then December. That, according to Lavrov, was probably what provoked Pyongyang.

“There’s a feeling that [the US was] intentionally provoking [North Korea’s] Kim Jong-un to break that pause, to fall for their provocation,” he said.

Tensions have been on the rise on the Korean Peninsula in recent months as Pyongyang keeps pursuing its nuclear program and missile testing despite international sanctions and condemnation, while the US and its allies intensify drills near the North Korean borders. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of a military scenario for North Korea, and recently included the country on the list of state sponsors of terrorism, paving the way for more sanctions.

Russia and China have proposed a roadmap for settling the Korean crisis through a transition to negotiations, which implies rejection of any actions that fuel tensions. The proposal called for North Korea to curb its nuclear and missile tests, in return for the US giving up on joint military drills with South Korea in the region, but it was rejected by Washington. A group of Russian MPs, who visited Pyongyang earlier this week, said that the North Korean side expressed readiness to engage in talks, but demanded that Moscow play a mediating role.

American F-22 & F-35 stealth jets to join massive air drills on Korean peninsula next month https://briefnews.eu/american-f-22-f-35-stealth-jets-to-join-massive-air-drills-on-korean-peninsula-next-month/ https://briefnews.eu/american-f-22-f-35-stealth-jets-to-join-massive-air-drills-on-korean-peninsula-next-month/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2017 03:01:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/american-f-22-f-35-stealth-jets-to-join-massive-air-drills-on-korean-peninsula-next-month/ Six F-22 Raptor and four F-35A Lightning American stealth jets will reportedly join regional ally South Korea in the largest flying exercise on the Korean peninsula next month, amid heightened tensions surrounding N. Korea’s nuclear and ballistic programs.

“Six F-22 fighters from the US Air Force are scheduled to join the joint South Korea-U.S. air force exercise Vigilant Ace from Dec. 4-8,” South Korean military officials told Yonhap. The date of the air drills was also confirmed by Reuters.

Last year, more than 16,000 servicemen took part in the annual exercise, which involved more than 200 US aircraft, including, F-16 Fighting Falcons, A-10 Thunderbolts II, EA-18G Growlers, F/A-18D Hornets, C-130 Hercules’, KC-135 Stratotankers and an E-3B Airborne Warning and Control System.

This year, under Donald Trump’s leadership, the Americans are sending their top of the range fighter aircraft to project its power over Korean airspace. F-22 fighters will reportedly be joined by up to four F-35A Lightning jets from Kadena Air Base in Okinawa to exert maximum pressure on North Korea, Yonhap sources noted.

During Vigilant Ace drills, the US fighters will reportedly practice “enemy infiltration” and engage in “precision strike drills” with their South Korean counterparts.

Trump has made it his administration’s priority to stop North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs, which have accelerated under the leadership of Kim Jong-un. The US plan, thus far, has focused on harsh economic measures adopted against North Korea. While diplomacy still dictates the rules of engagement between Pyongyang and Washington, both capitals are not shying away from belligerent rhetoric and mutual threats of nuclear armageddon.

North Korea has repeatedly protested over the American military buildup in the region out of fear that Washington, Seoul and Tokyo might attack Pyongyang. The isolated state has also consistently condemned all US-led military drills in the region.

Just this month, in the latest show of American muscle in the region, three US carrier strike groups held tri-carrier, multinational drills off the Korean coast. The USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt were joined by Japan’s Ise, Inazuma and Makinami vessels, as well as near a dozen South Korean ships. North Korea furiously condemned the maneuvers, which also involved US B-1 strategic bombers.

Washington “is now running amok for war exercises by introducing nuclear war equipment in and around the Korean Peninsula, thereby proving that the US itself is the major offender of the escalation of tension and undermining of the peace,” Ja Song Nam, North Korea’s Ambassador to the United Nations, said in a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres earlier this month.

The US, South Korea and Japan have kick-started a two-day missile warning drills over the Korean Peninsula to practice the cross-navy capabilities in detecting and tracking any potential North Korean ballistic missiles, South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The two-day Missile Warning Exercise which is taking place Tuesday and Wednesday off South Korean and Japanese coasts are designed to tackle North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats, Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The drills are being led by the American Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Stethem, Japanese Kongō-class guided missile destroyer JDS Kirishima and South Korean Sejong Great-class destroyer which are all equipped with Aegis Combat System, according to Yonhap.

While the Aegis Combat System produced by Lockheed Martin is designed to tracks and destroy enemy targets, the two-day missile warning drills will only detect and track the enemy missiles. The exercise will not include intercepting and destroying projectiles.

The US and its allies are not planning to engage any actual simulated targets but will practice a computer simulation to check Aegis’ ability to detect, track and exchange information between the three navies in real time via satellites.

The drills off the Korean Peninsula begin amid heightened tensions around Pyongyang’s nuclear and missile test launches. North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test on September 3, forcing the UN Security Council to introduce new sanctions. The UN sanctions, however, did not stop Pyongyang from launching a series of ballistic missiles later in September, while vowing to destroy the US and their allies with nuclear weapons if attacked.

For now, Washington is still on course to pursue diplomatic denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

On Monday US Secretary of Defence James Mattis, Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera and South Korean Minister of National Defense Song Young-moo held trilateral talks on the sidelines of an ASEAN security forum held in the Philippines, where besides diplomatic pressure the chiefs vowed to step up joint air drills over Korean Peninsula.

“The three ministers lauded collective efforts to expand information sharing on North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats and enhance response capabilities, including the execution of multiple combined flight training missions with US bomber aircraft,” the defense chiefs said in a joint statement.

On Sunday, in an interview with Fox News, Donald Trump has once again reminded Pyongyang that the US is “totally prepared” to use the military option against North Korea.

“You would be shocked to see how totally prepared we are if we need to be,” to use military action, Trump said. “Would it be nice not to do that? The answer is yes.”

With Pyongyang and Washington whipping up tensions, Moscow and Beijing have repeatedly called on both parties to remain calm. Russia and China have called for the implementation of the so-called “double freeze” initiative that envisages North Korea suspending its nuclear and missile program in exchange for the US and South Korea abandoning their military exercises in the region. The initiative has been rejected by Washington.

US, South Korea begin 5-day naval drills off Korean Peninsula https://briefnews.eu/us-south-korea-begin-5-day-naval-drills-off-korean-peninsula/ https://briefnews.eu/us-south-korea-begin-5-day-naval-drills-off-korean-peninsula/#respond Mon, 16 Oct 2017 22:54:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-south-korea-begin-5-day-naval-drills-off-korean-peninsula/ American and South Korean ships began joint naval exercises in the eastern and western waters off the Korean Peninsula, after North Korea renewed its threat to fire missiles near the US territory of Guam.

The maneuvers, which began Monday, will involve fighter jets, helicopters and 40 naval ships and submarines from both countries, including the American aircraft carrier USS ‘Ronald Reagan’.

Dubbed Courageous Channel, the drills are aimed at “practicing how to respond to a potential naval provocation by North Korea” and “improving the allies’ combined operational capability,” the South Korean Navy said. The drills are expected to include live-fire exercises by naval ships, as well as aircraft and anti-submarine training.

The US also sent four advanced fighter jets – two F-22s and two F-35s – for an air show and exhibition in Seoul. Two US B-1B supersonic bombers also flew to South Korea from their base in Guam, in a demonstration of power against any North Korean aggression.

On Friday, the US Navy’s 7th Fleet announced the nuclear-powered submarine USS ‘Michigan’ had arrived from Guam at the South Korean port of Busan “for a routine visit.” The ‘Michigan’ is armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles.

The US military said it will practice evacuating noncombatant Americans out of South Korea in the event of war and other emergencies. It did not say how many people would participate in the evacuation drill, but the scale and focus would not be different from exercises in the past.

“Although not directly tied to current geopolitical events, our forces must be ready in all areas,” General Vincent K. Brooks, the commander of US Forces Korea, told the New York Times. “This training is as important to readiness as our other routine events such as tank gunnery and fighter wing exercises.”

The two countries regularly conduct joint exercises, often enraging the government in Pyongyang, which views such training as a rehearsal for an invasion.

On Friday, North Korea renewed its threat to Guam, accusing the US of provocation by mobilizing the aircraft carrier and other war assets near the Korean Peninsula.

“Such military acts compel (North Korea) to take military counteraction,” said Kim Kwang Hak, a researcher at North Korea’s Institute of American Studies, according to Stars and Stripes. “We have already warned several times that we will take countermeasures for self-defense, including a salvo of missiles into water near the US territory of Guam.”

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that the US is “always open” to negotiations, but appeared to suggest that military options also remained available.

Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un have traded insults in recent months, with the US president labeling Kim a “rocket man…on a suicide mission,” and Kim returning fire, calling the American leader a “mentally deranged US dotard.”

Trump has gone further and threatened to “totally destroy” the North if Pyongyang continued to threaten the US and its allies.

The UN Security Council had already passed a series of tough economic sanctions against Pyongyang following its repeated testing of ballistic missiles and, reportedly, also of a hydrogen bomb. The UN sanctions targeted shipments of oil and other fuel used in missile testing as well as government assets and leaders.

The most recent UN resolution also banned all textile exports from the North and prohibited any country from authorizing new work permits for North Korean workers – two key sources of hard currency for Pyongyang.
