Penguins march back to steal Game 1 away from Caps https://briefnews.eu/penguins-march-back-to-steal-game-1-away-from-caps/ https://briefnews.eu/penguins-march-back-to-steal-game-1-away-from-caps/#respond Fri, 27 Apr 2018 03:41:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/penguins-march-back-to-steal-game-1-away-from-caps/

After the Capitals scored early, the Penguins scored often to stun their rivals with yet another comeback.

Patric Hornqvist, Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel scored in a 4:49 span to help Pittsburgh erase a two-goal deficit in the third period and the Penguins beat Washington 3-2 on Thursday night in Game 1 of the second-round series.

Matt Murray made 32 saves, and the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied from two goals down to beat the Washington Capitals 3-2, in Game One of their Eastern Conference Second Round series.2:03

Showing no panic from allowing a goal to Evgeny Kuznetsov 17 seconds into the game and another to Alex Ovechkin 28 seconds into the third period, the back-to-back defending Stanley Cup champions took another series lead in typical Penguins fashion.

Playing without injured forwards Evgeni Malkin and Carl Hagelin, Pittsburgh naturally fed off Crosby, who had a goal and an assist.

“Right from Sid, he led the way for us and it’s right down the lineup,” said Guentzel, who had a goal and two assists and leads the playoffs with 16 points. “You can’t get down. There’s going to be highs and lows throughout the whole series. You’ve got to stick with it to the end and we were happy to get three and end up winning the game.”

Murray holds down fort

Matt Murray stopped 32 of 34 shots, keeping the Penguins in the game and maintaining the lead late with a sprawling stick save on Brett Connolly with 2:30 left. Unsure of what would happen at the other end of the rink with Braden Holtby dialed in, Murray could only keep the puck out as much as possible after allowing the early-period goals to Kuznetsov and Ovechkin.

With Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin going head-to-head for the third consecutive playoff year, Rob Pizzo breaks down the rivalry that fans love watching.1:35

Murray denied Michal Kempny from point-blank range and kept the puck out from a hard-charging Devante Smith-Pelly early and missed no opportunity to give the Penguins the impressive stop when they needed it.

“I thought he was locked in all night long,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “He made some big saves for us, especially when they were pressing down the stretch there. … When you get those types of saves, it’s easy to play with some confidence in front of him.”

Murray couldn’t predict a furious comeback, but he wasn’t shocked, either. Not after Pittsburgh has won nine consecutive playoff series dating to 2016, including two against these Capitals.

“There’s going to be good things that happen out there and there’s going to be bad things that happen out there,” Murray said. “It’s about how you respond. We did a good job of that.”

Capitals blow another two-goal lead

The Capitals gave the Penguins a couple of solid punches in the series opener but didn’t respond well when some bounces went against them early in the third. A deflection goal by Hornqvist, a puck that went off Ovechkin’s stick to Crosby and then a redirection by Guentzel took the air out of the building and ruined a strong start by Holtby.

“Obviously, some things we’d like to work on,” said Holtby, who stopped all 17 shots through two periods before allowing three on eight in the third. “Same time, their goals they scored, they were kind of strange plays, especially the last one. It was one of those that’s just a weird bounce.”

Washington blew a two-goal lead for the fourth time in seven games in these playoffs, but players felt they handled this better than situations in the first round against Columbus.

“Those three shifts, they score,” said Kuznetsov, whose goal was the second-fastest in Capitals playoff history. “I feel like they got momentum, and then they score again and again.”

As even as the play was, a handful of mistakes were enough to put the Penguins up going into Game 2 Sunday afternoon. Sullivan already sees opportunities to cut down on chances against, and his players think they can be better as the series goes on.

“It’s one game, we did some good things,” Crosby said. “I think in any playoff series, it’s just about getting better with every game.”

Bird’s eye view: Penguins snap a selfie as polar explorer takes a hike (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/birds-eye-view-penguins-snap-a-selfie-as-polar-explorer-takes-a-hike-video/ https://briefnews.eu/birds-eye-view-penguins-snap-a-selfie-as-polar-explorer-takes-a-hike-video/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 21:40:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/birds-eye-view-penguins-snap-a-selfie-as-polar-explorer-takes-a-hike-video/

Two Emperor penguins grabbed a sneaky selfie when they unexpectedly stumbled upon an polar explorer’s unmanned camera. The pair of flightless birds have now become viral stars.

The footage was captured by Antarctic researcher Eddie Gault. The Australian left his camera on the ice while hiking around the Auster Rookery near his country’s Mawson research facility at the edge of the Antarctic plateau. When he returned, Gault found the camera upturned and soon discovered the locals had been making use of his equipment.

A video of the close encounter shows a pair of crafty Emperor penguins sneak up to the camera and flip the lens skyward – all the better for snapping a selfie. The birds then inspect the device before appearing to consult one another about its origins. The Australian Antarctic Division published the video to its Twitter feed on Thursday.

Twitter users were tickled by the video, with some comparing the pair to a hip-hop duo. Others likened their apparent bewilderment to a grandparent getting a smartphone for the first time.

The Auster Rookery is one of 40 breeding grounds for thousands of penguins on the icy continent. Australia’s Antarctic Division is Australia’s first continental station and the longest continuously operating station south of the Antarctic Circle.

  • A previously unknown ‘supercolony’ of penguins has been discovered in the remote Danger Islands of Antarctica.
  • Scientists had previously feared that the Adélie penguins’ numbers had been in decline because of climate change.
  • In total there were 751,527 pairs of penguins living on the islands – more than the rest of the Antarctic Peninsula combined.

A previously unknown “supercolony” of Adélie penguins has been discovered in the Antarctic, easing fears their numbers had been in decline for decades due to climate change.

The thriving colony inhabits the remote Danger Islands, where the effects of both climate change and human activity are less pronounced than in other parts of Antarctica.

Reigning Stanley Cup champion Penguins lose Matt Murray to concussion https://briefnews.eu/reigning-stanley-cup-champion-penguins-lose-matt-murray-to-concussion/ https://briefnews.eu/reigning-stanley-cup-champion-penguins-lose-matt-murray-to-concussion/#respond Tue, 27 Feb 2018 17:55:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/reigning-stanley-cup-champion-penguins-lose-matt-murray-to-concussion/

A trade for goalie depth didn’t materialize for general manager Jim Rutherford ahead of Monday’s deadline, and that could prove costly for the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins.

Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced Tuesday morning that starting goalie Matt Murray will be sidelined indefinitely with a concussion after taking a puck to the head off a shot from teammate Olli Maatta at Monday’s practice.

“We believe in the guys we have,” Sullivan told reporters. “We’ve had some success with some inexperienced guys.”

Backup Tristan Jarry and third-stringer Casey DeSmith were on the ice Tuesday working with Penguins goalie coach Mike Buckley prior to the team’s morning skate.

Jarry sports a 10-4-2 record in 20 games this season for Pittsburgh with a 2.58 goals-against average and .916 save percentage, but the 22-year-old from Surrey, B.C., has never appeared in a NHL playoff game.

The 26-year-old DeSmith, whom the Penguins recalled from the American Hockey League on Monday, is 3-3-0 in seven games for Pittsburgh this season with a 2.23 GAA and .926 save percentage.

Injury prone?

Reports suggested Rutherford was attempting to acquire Buffalo Sabres netminder Robin Lehner after Murray was injured in practice. Lehner has a 2.95 GAA and .910 save percentage for the 19-33-11 Sabres, who sit last in the Eastern Conference.

This is the fifth time Murray has missed time due to injury over his one-plus seasons in the NHL. In his first full season at the Penguins’ starting goaltender, the 23-year-old native of Thunder Bay, Ont., has a 2.82 GAA and .909 save percentage over 37 starts. Those totals fall short of the 2.41, .923 totals he fashioned over 47 starts last season.

Murray missed seven games earlier this season with a lower-body injury and several more following the death of his father in January. In November, Sullivan downplayed questions about the six-foor-four, 178-pound Murray’s durability, even though he missed last season with a hand injury and concussion.

He became the de facto No. 1 puckstopper when Pittsburgh lost Marc-Andre Fleury to the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft last summer.

The Penguins entered Tuesday’s game against visiting New Jersey clinging to third place in the Metropolitan Division, four points ahead of the Devils, who occupy the first wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Hornqvist makes triumphant return as Penguins top Capitals https://briefnews.eu/hornqvist-makes-triumphant-return-as-penguins-top-capitals/ https://briefnews.eu/hornqvist-makes-triumphant-return-as-penguins-top-capitals/#respond Thu, 12 Oct 2017 15:30:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hornqvist-makes-triumphant-return-as-penguins-top-capitals/

Patric Hornqvist went right back to the net where he feels most comfortable and was in his element once again.

Hornqvist scored a power-play goal and assisted on another in his season debut to help the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 on Wednesday night in their first meeting since the playoffs. The Swedish forward who scored the Stanley Cup-clinching goal despite a broken finger and needed surgery to repair it, was on the ice for all three Pittsburgh power-play goals, naturally crashing the crease on each occasion as he’s accustomed to doing.

“That’s usually where I end up being and where I get my points and like to be,” Hornqvist said. “You have to play games to get better, and it was good to get the win and it was fun to be back out there.”

Game Wrap: Penguins edge Capitals in Hornqvist’s return1:34

Hornqvist assisted on a goal by Kris Letang, the defenceman’s first since Feb. 4 after missing the end of last season and playoffs because of neck surgery. He was also right there for Conor Sheary’s goal as Pittsburgh went 3 for 6 on the power play.

Ovi scores again

Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading eighth goal of the season in the Capitals’ fourth game. His goal with 7:09 in the third period made things interesting, but Washington’s season-high six minor penalties dug too deep a hole as a third of the game was played on special teams.

“It really didn’t allow our top players to get going,” coach Barry Trotz said. “Every time we started getting any rhythm, we’d get a penalty.”

Christian Djoos assisted on Ovechkin’s goal and scored in his NHL debut to become the third defenceman in Capitals franchise history to score in his debut after Steve Poapst and Hall of Famer Scott Stevens.

“First game in the NHL, and you get a goal and an assist,” Djoos said. “That wasn’t my plan really when I showed up at the rink. I was going to play good and play a structured game and detailed game, but happy with the goal and the assist.”

Pittsburgh outshot Washington 36-22 as Matt Murray made 20 saves for the victory while Braden Holtby had 33 in the Capitals’ first regulation loss of the season. The Penguins also went 4 for 4 on the penalty kill.

Hip Check: Did Sidney Crosby get away with a head shot?0:33

“We had a good game plan going in,” Letang said of the penalty-killing success. “I think we did a good job of denying their biggest threat with Ovi on the weak side.”

‘He can score from anywhere’

Ovechkin was in danger of going without a point for a second game in a row after scoring seven goals in the Capitals’ first two. Trotz was happy that Djoos made the play to set up Ovechkin’s seventh even-strength goal of the season, and Murray was happy the Penguins didn’t allow him to do any more damage.

“He can score from anywhere,” Murray said. “He’s got a really tough shot to read as a goalie and you’ve got to be aggressive on him. But you don’t want to be overplaying him either because then other guys can hurt you just as bad.”

The Capitals kept Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel from scoring, as Crosby had just a secondary assist on Hornqvist’s goal. But the Penguins’ depth allowed them to mix and match when the power play wasn’t clicking, and getting Hornqvist back makes a big difference for the defending champions.

“He brings so much to this team,” coach Mike Sullivan said. “He plays with so much swagger. He’s just a great competitor.”

Crosby, Penguins visit Trump at the White House https://briefnews.eu/crosby-penguins-visit-trump-at-the-white-house/ https://briefnews.eu/crosby-penguins-visit-trump-at-the-white-house/#respond Tue, 10 Oct 2017 20:44:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crosby-penguins-visit-trump-at-the-white-house/

President Donald Trump is honouring the Stanley Cup winning Pittsburgh Penguins, calling them “true champions and incredible patriots.”

Trump welcomed the Penguins into the Oval Office on Tuesday. He celebrated their second consecutive championship in the East Room of the White House and singled out the achievements of Conn Smythe winner Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and American Phil Kessel, among others.

Trump on Crosby: ‘Has he outdone you yet Mario?’1:06

Trump has grabbed a number of sports headlines in recent weeks, including his criticism of NFL players for kneeling during the national anthem and his decision to disinvite the NBA champion Golden State Warriors to the White House.

He joked that Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle should help him renegotiate NAFTA but avoided any talk about other sports. The Penguins are the fourth championship team and third pro team to visit Trump at the White House after the NFL’s New England Patriots, Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs and college football’s Clemson Tigers.

Crosby, coach Mike Sullivan and other members of the Penguins said this visit had nothing to do with politics. The team said in a statement it respected the tradition of visiting the White House.

Trump on Penguins: ‘You do a lot of bad damage to our Rangers team”1:20

Crosby and the team have drawn criticism for their decision to visit, including from former poet laureate of Halifax El Jones, who discussed the history of racial issues in Crosby’s hometown of Cole Harbour, N.S., with The Current’s Anna Maria Tremonti.

“So for people who are, sort of, arguing that Sidney Crosby can’t possibly know about race or that race has nothing to do with Sidney Crosby because he’s just some Canadian hockey player and these are only issues that exist in the U.S., that’s simply not the case when you look at where he’s from and where he grew up,” Jones said.

Penguins will 3-peat: this and other bold predictions https://briefnews.eu/penguins-will-3-peat-this-and-other-bold-predictions/ https://briefnews.eu/penguins-will-3-peat-this-and-other-bold-predictions/#respond Tue, 03 Oct 2017 15:39:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/penguins-will-3-peat-this-and-other-bold-predictions/

As usual, there is no shortage of storylines with another NHL season upon us.

The Calgary Flames made a splash on Monday signing 45-year-old Jaromir Jagr. This will be Jagr’s ninth NHL team and first time wearing the sweater of a Canadian club.

There will be rule crackdowns in the faceoff circle, slashing and an alteration to the offside video challenge that now calls for a two-minute penalty for an unsuccessful challenge.

WEST TEAM PREVIEWS

The NHL now is a 31-team league, thanks to the addition of expansion Vegas Golden Knights. This also is the first time in 20 seasons Jarome Iginla, now 40, is on the sidelines looking for work.

Of course, for the first quadrennial cycle since 1998, the NHL has decided not to allow its players to participate in the Olympics. One of the reasons was they didn’t think it would be good for business to shut down the season for three weeks.

But as the New York Post pointed out last month, the league’s national television broadcaster in the United States, NBC, does not have any NHL games scheduled for broadcast during the Olympics on its main network or cable sports network. NBC also is the Olympic broadcaster in the U.S. Hmmm.

Let’s mull over a handful of topics and make some bold predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins will threepeat

The New York Islanders are the last club to win three in a row when they put together four consecutive Stanley Cup championship seasons between 1980-83.

The Penguins might have lost key players like Marc-Andre Fleury, Chris Kunitz, Nick Bonino, Matt Cullen, Trevor Daley and Ron Hainsey, as well as assistant coach Rick Tocchet and assistant general manager Jason Botterill.

But the 30-something set of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Phil Kessel will be aided by youngsters Jake Guentzel, Conor Sheary and goalie Matt Murray, as well as the emergence in last season’s run of defenceman Brian Dumoulin. Plus, star defenceman Kris Letang is healthy again after neck surgery caused him to miss the playoffs last spring.

In a perfect world, we’d see a Penguins-Chicago Blackhawks final. Both teams have won three Stanley Cups since 2009  — Pittsburgh in 2009, ’16, ’17, and Chicago 2010, ’13, ’15.

EAST TEAM PREVIEWS

The Predators will return to the final, too

Not since the Penguins lost in the 2008 Stanley Cup final to the Detroit Red Wings and rebounded to win in 2009, has the loser in the final returned to the championship series the following spring.

2009 — Detroit (lost in second round in 2010)
2010 — Philadelphia (lost in second round in 2011)
2011 — Vancouver (lost in first round in 2012)
2012 — New Jersey (missed playoffs)
2013 — Boston (lost in second round 2014)
2014 — N.Y. Rangers (lost in conference final 2015)
2015 — Tampa Bay (lost in conference final 2016)
2016 — San Jose (lost in first round 2017)

The Nashville Predators have an excellent opportunity to make it back to the final. Sure, defenceman Ryan Ellis is out until January after knee surgery, but they did advance to within two games of winning it all this spring without their top centre, Ryan Johansen, and sniper Kevin Fiala.

They have depth and if playoff heroes like Colton Sissons, Frederick Gaudreau and Pontus Aberg can feed off their springtime performance this team should be even better. There also is junior-aged defenceman Samuel Girard. Although the Predators have one of the top blue lines in the game even with Ellis injured, Girard could start the season in Nashville.

5 things about the 2017-18 NHL Season1:40

The Flames are Canada’s best hope

By the time the playoffs roll around in April, there will be many stories written and told about the Montreal Canadiens and the 25th anniversary of the last Canada-based team to have won the Stanley Cup.

The chance of ending that Canadian drought has improved immensely since neither of the Canadiens, Senators, Maple Leafs, Canucks, Flames, Oilers or Jets made the 2016 post-season.

Montreal has the best goaltender in the world in Carey Price. Edmonton has the game’s leading scorer in Connor McDavid. Ottawa is coming off a trip to the East final. Toronto has a dynamic young group led by Auston Matthews and Winnipeg has a pair of its own capable kids in Mark Scheifele and Patrick Laine.

But the most productive of the seven Canadian clubs will be the Calgary Flames. They do not have the most talented group up front, but their defence with a top-four of Dougie Hamilton, Travis Hamonic, Mark Giordano and T.J. Brodie is the best in the league. Mike Smith in goal will give them an edge in the playoffs.

Odds are Vegas will finish 31st, but the Golden Knights will be a tough out

The last time the NHL expanded was in 2000 when the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild joined the loop. The Blue Jackets finished with 71 points and in 13th place in the West, three points ahead of the Wild and five in front of the last-place Anaheim Ducks.

With the loser point for an overtime or shootout loss introduced after the 2004-05 lockout-cancelled season, the lowest point total put up was 48 by the lowly Colorado Avalanche last year.

The Golden Knights’ over-under for their point total has been set at 68.5. I say with Fleury in goal, James Neal and Jonathan Marchessault up front, a capable defence, Gerard Gallant behind the bench and the loser point, Vegas will put together a better year than the inaugural Blue Jackets.

Duchene may spend the entire season in Denver

Four years ago, Matt Duchene enjoyed his most productive season with 23 goals and 70 points in only 71 games and cracked the gold-medal winning Canadian men’s Olympic team roster.

But after a disastrous season for the Avalanche, he demanded a trade and while he considered a no-show, the 26-year-old forward was at Colorado’s training camp, hopeful he soon will be moved.

Every team seems to have been reported to be in pursuit of Duchene, including Canadian teams like Ottawa, Calgary and Montreal.

But what if the Avalanche turn it around this season? Colorado still has talent with Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Erik Johnson and now the addition of 23-year-old Harvard product, Alexander Kerfoot. The Vancouver native has exhibited plenty of chemistry with Duchene.

Besides, Duchene is under contract until July 2019. So there is little pressure for Avalanche executive vice-president of hockey operations Joe Sakic to make a Duchene trade for another year.

Penguins set politics aside, accept invitation to White House https://briefnews.eu/penguins-set-politics-aside-accept-invitation-to-white-house/ https://briefnews.eu/penguins-set-politics-aside-accept-invitation-to-white-house/#respond Sun, 24 Sep 2017 19:46:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/penguins-set-politics-aside-accept-invitation-to-white-house/

The Pittsburgh Penguins say they will continue the tradition of championship teams attending the White House.

The 2016-17 Stanley Cup champions released a statement on Sunday that said the team believes there are other ways to express their political views.

“The Pittsburgh Penguins respect the institution of the Office of the President, and the long tradition of championship teams visiting the White House.

“We attended White House ceremonies after previous championships – touring the historic building and visiting briefly with Presidents George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama – and have accepted an invitation to attend again this year.

“Any agreement or disagreement with a president’s politics, policies or agenda can be expressed in other ways. However, we very much respect the rights of other individuals and groups to express themselves as they see fit.”

Pittsburgh’s willingness to attend the White House is in contrast to the Golden State Warriors who have clashed with U.S. president Donald Trump and will not be visiting this year.

Trump revoked the White House invitation, despite the fact that the invitation had not yet been made official, to the NBA champions on Saturday after the team had said they might not accept.
