While we ponder the state of hyperloop tunnel transportation, Elon Musk just updated the plan for The Boring Company. The tech exec tweeted out a new concept video that focuses on a shuttle instead of cars. The shuttle (seen briefly in the first Boring Company video) is intended to carry people and bikes, and Musk said that Boring Company’s loop network would have “1000’s of small stations the size of a single parking space.”
Adjusting The Boring Company plan: all tunnels & Hyperloop will prioritize pedestrians & cyclists over cars
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 9, 2018
Boring Co urban loop system would have 1000’s of small stations the size of a single parking space that take you very close to your destination & blend seamlessly into the fabric of a city, rather than a small number of big stations like a subway
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 9, 2018
That way they could blend into a city and bring riders directly to their destination, instead of a subway-sized stop further away. Additionally, he tweeted that “all tunnels & Hyperloop will prioritize pedestrians & cyclists over cars.” While cars will still be in the mix, the current promise is that they’ll have to wait for personalized mass transit needs, possibly encouraging people to ditch space and energy-hogging autos to opt for transportation that benefits everyone.
Better video coming soon, but it would look a bit like this: pic.twitter.com/C0iJPi8b4U

Elon Musk started The Boring Company in late 2016 because he was frustrated by sitting in his car in Los Angeles traffic. A system of tunnels, he reasoned, would alleviate certain traffic choke points. The idea turned into reality throughout 2017, as Musk tore up the parking lot outside of his SpaceX headquarters, testing boring machinery to find weak spots that engineers might improve upon to make tunnel-digging faster and cheaper.
The idea also changed a bit: instead of simply looking to build the cheapest tunnels, The Boring Company wanted to build a “Loop” inside its tunnels. The Loop would be a modified version of Musk’s Hyperloop idea, but it would not pull a vacuum and cars would be lowered into the tunnel system where they would be put on electric skates and zipped off to their destination automatically.
According to some tweets from Elon Musk last night, though, the idea has once again morphed. “Adjusting The Boring Company plan: all tunnels & Hyperloop will prioritize pedestrians & cyclists over cars,” the executive tweeted, adding: “Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met. It’s a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first.”

It is unclear if the incident was intentional, but local news reports indicate that it was traffic-related. At least one of the pedestrians has life-threatening injuries while another elderly pedestrian has been sent to a trauma center, KTVU reports.
There are no indications that the incident was a terrorist attack, SFPD spokeswoman Grace Gatpandan told the San Jose Mercury News, confirming “multiple” injuries.
According to reports, the incident happened when the driver of the truck tried to make an illegal left turn at a busy intersection at the corner of 21st Ave and Geary Boulevard. Unable to complete the turn, the truck hit a Mazda sedan with a family of five inside, while also clipping two elderly pedestrians.

Traffic in New York City can be intense. In Manhattan, where the daytime population surges to four million and pedestrians can outnumber cars by an 18-to-1 margin, city officials recently conducted a months-long experiment on a single block along Broadway. Pavement that was used exclusively for cars was redistributed, allotting more space to bicyclists and pedestrians. The speed limit was slashed to 5 mph. Dedicated bike lanes were added. The city’s Department of Transportation deemed the experiment so successful that it has made the changes permanent.
–
The “shared street,” near the iconic Flatiron Building, occupies a sliver of Broadway where it intersects Fifth Avenue, just west of Madison Square Park. Viewed from above, it looks like a buffer zone between the leafy park and bustling Fifth Avenue, with tables and umbrellas beckoning pedestrians to sit down and take in the open air.

“When we met with the local community to hear their concerns, we weren’t surprised to learn of the changes they wanted to make this area safer for pedestrians and cyclists,” Luis Sanchez, Manhattan borough commissioner for the New York City DOT. “It’s a space where motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists all travel together safely, with cars traveling at a reduced speed and pedestrians having more options to circulate in an area.”
–
Jennifer Brown, executive director of the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership business-improvement district, said her organization has been working with DOT for several years to improve the area, beginning with reclamation of public space from Broadway. The plaza that brought the café tables to the area was built in 2008.
–
“The actual shared street—this little part of Broadway—was part of a larger project,” she said. “The plaza program was very successful in our neighborhood, and it was very new at the time. I think it was a good idea then to take it a step further.”

New York is like many other big cities across the globe grappling with congestion and with growing urban populations that are demanding safer streets and new mobility options. In Paris, officials have proposed doubling the number of bike lanes and will limit certain streets to electric vehicles by 2020. In London, mayor Sadiq Khan wants to prohibit the building of new parking spaces, and officials are considering lowering speed limits.
–

–
While speed limits in New York have already been reduced to 25 mph in recent years in an effort to reduce traffic fatalities, the shared-street program further lowers vehicle speed limit to 5 mph. Construction on the shared-street project narrowed pedestrian crossing distances on Fifth Avenue and included protected bicycle lanes.
–
Brown said one of the big challenges DOT faced in altering traffic patterns was to avoid choking access to several large buildings on Fifth Avenue that rely on truck deliveries to support building operations. “Keeping access open to those buildings was very important, but there was so little traffic there anyway, it doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference,” she said. “It’s still early—we just had the ribbon cutting—but so far, so good.”

Shared-street programs have been tried in other parts of New York City, including Lower Manhattan and Jamaica, Queens. Another in Manhattan is planned in 2018 on 43rd Street between Lexington and Third Avenue. Pittsburgh, Seattle, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, have commercial shared street programs aimed at reducing congestion and creating a lively public realm with pedestrian-first designs.
–
“We’re seeing cities across the U.S. embrace innovative street designs, like shared streets,” Alex Engel, a spokesman for the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), said in an email. “In part, this is from having a codified resource in tested street designs, which we provide in the NACTO Urban Street Design Guide, which has been endorsed by over 50 jurisdictions in the U.S.”

(Reuters) — Research by Apple computer scientists on how self-driving cars can better spot cyclists and pedestrians while using fewer sensors has been posted online, in what appears to be the company’s first publicly disclosed paper on autonomous vehicles.
The paper by Yin Zhou and Oncel Tuzel, submitted on Nov. 17 to independent online journal arXiv, is significant because Apple’s famed corporate secrecy around future products has been seen as a drawback among artificial intelligence and machine learning researchers.
The scientists proposed a new software approach called “VoxelNet” for helping computers detect three-dimensional objects.
Apple declined to comment.
Academics are used to freely sharing their work with peers at other organizations. Yielding to that dynamic, Apple in July established the Apple Machine Learning Journal for its researchers. Their work rarely appears outside the journal, which so far has not published any research on self-driving cars.
Self-driving cars often use a combination of normal two-dimensional cameras and depth-sensing “LiDAR” units to recognize the world around them. While the units supply depth information, their low resolution makes it hard to detect small, faraway objects without help from a normal camera linked to it in real time.
But with new software, the Apple researchers said they were able to get “highly encouraging results” in spotting pedestrians and cyclists with just LiDAR data. They also wrote they were able to beat other approaches for detecting three-dimensional objects that use only LiDAR. The experiments were computer simulations and did not involve road tests.
Though Chief Executive Tim Cook has called self-driving cars “the mother of all AI projects,” Apple has given few hints about the nature of its self-driving car ambitious.
Last December, Apple told federal regulators it was excited about the technology and asked regulators not to restrict testing of the technology.
In April, Apple filed a self-driving car testing plan with California regulators.

At least five people have been injured, including a baby, after a car rammed into pedestrians in a busy street in Sydney, police told local media, adding that a woman is in serious condition. Police believe the driver of the car may have suffered a medical episode.
The incident reportedly took place near a restaurant on Victoria Street, Chatswood, a major business and residential district on the Lower North Shore of Sydney.
According to Nine News Australia, at least six people have been injured in the incident, including a baby.
Police are not treating the incident as terrorism-related, reports in local media say.
“The incident was not a deliberate act and it’s believed the man [driver] may have suffered a medical episode,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Police are treating the Barcelona van crash as a terror act with at least one confirmed fatality and scores of injured people. The attack is the fourth such incident in Europe. Nice, Berlin, London and Stockholm have all endured attacks of this kind.
The recent wave of terror attacks in Europe, where pedestrians became victims of rogue drivers, began in France when a Tunisian rammed his 19-ton truck into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in Nice on July 14, 2016.
Some 86 people were killed and nearly 500 injured in the French Mediterranean resort in what still remains the deadliest ramming attack on EU soil.
The perpetrator was shot dead by police in the cabin of the rented truck, with Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) claiming responsibility for the attack.
Twelve people lost their lives and 56 others were wounded when another Tunisian national plowed his struck through a Christmas market in the heart of the German capital, Berlin, on December 19, 2016.

The attacker also swore allegiance to IS according to a video distributed by the terror group later. He had stolen the vehicle to carry out the crime.
The manhunt for the terrorist lasted four days and ended with Italian police shooting the man in the suburbs of Milan.
The attack in London on March 22, 2017 was carried out by a radicalized UK citizen with IS also claiming responsibility for the attack.
The perpetrator knocked over pedestrians with his van on Westminster Bridge in the British capital, leaving four people dead and 49 injured.
He then abandoned the vehicle and killed a policeman with a knife before being shot dead by other officers.
The attacker drove his hijacked delivery truck through a pedestrian street in Stockholm on March 22, 2017, crashing it into a shopping mall.

The crash left 5 people dead and 14 others injured. There was also an improvised explosive device inside the vehicle which didn’t go off.
The perpetrator fled the scene but was detained by police the same day. Charges against the IS-linked Uzbek asylum seeker are expected to be put forward by the end of August.
