The Blues are ready to pay £45m to beat off competition from Liverpool and Arsenal for the American international.

The 20-year-old playmaker, who has been a Chelsea target since the start of the season, is set move to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Pulisic played as a seven year-old in the youth team of National League North Brackley Town in Northamptonshire when his teacher mother Kelley was on a work exchange.

He only has one more year left on his contract with Borussia Dortmund, where he was brought through from the youth team by Jurgen Klopp.

The Blues will only consider parting with Hazard who is still stalling on signing a new deal once they have got a replacement signed and sealed.

Real are ready to offer the Blues around £150m for the Belgium international as well as at least one player.

They are ready to let Mateo Kovacic make his loan move permanent as part of the deal, while Isco could also be added the mega package to get their man.

Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri issued Hazard an ultimatum and called the lingering transfer rumours surrounding the winger ‘a problem’.

“I think we have to solve the problem,” he said. “If we want to plan the future, we have to solve this problem.

“I don’t know [what Hazard is thinking], but I think that it’s time to decide.”

Hazard will enter into the final year of his contract at the end of the current season but recently said he might be happy to sign new terms.

He became just the tenth player to reach the milestone of 100 goals for the club in the recent 2-1 win over Watford and gave fans some cause for optimism with his comments after the game.

”It means a lot, especially because we also won,” Hazard said.

“Scoring 101 goals with this amazing club is something I will never forget.

“But now I think the fans, the staff, myself, the players, we want more.

“I want to score more for this club and then try to be a legend like [Frank] Lampard, [John] Terry, [Didier] Drogba, I try to do my best.”

Although Hazard is unsure on where his future lies, in October he admitted that he has always dreamed of playing for Real Madrid.

He said: “I am playing good football. Real Madrid is the best club in the world. I don’t want to lie today.

“It is my dream since I was a kid. I was dreaming about this club. I don’t want to talk about this every day.

“I don’t have time, but we will talk about my future soon. I think so.”

Hazard has already scored 10 Premier League goals this season and assisted a further nine.

Chelsea face Crystal Palace on Sunday with the Blues looking to secure their grasp on a top four spot.

    Contactless technology is paving the way for a cashless society within 15 years https://briefnews.eu/contactless-technology-is-paving-the-way-for-a-cashless-society-within-15-years/ https://briefnews.eu/contactless-technology-is-paving-the-way-for-a-cashless-society-within-15-years/#respond Sun, 25 Feb 2018 01:48:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/contactless-technology-is-paving-the-way-for-a-cashless-society-within-15-years/

    Contactless cardsGETTY

Contactless cards are just the beginning, as experts predict physical cash will soon be unnecessary

Immediately, a smart camera scans your irises, connects with your phone and sends your usual order to the barista. A couple of minutes later you waltz out of the door clutching your cappuccino without even touching your purse as the money has automatically been deducted from your bank account.

That kind of shopping experience isn’t as futuristic as we might think and could be with us within 15 years, say experts.

We already use cash for less than half of all our payments. Contactless spending where you touch your card or smartphone to a scanner at the till rose by a third in the first half of last year alone and has recently overtaken cash as the preferred way of paying for purchases of less than £30.

The revolution is fastest in cities and among the young, so it’s no wonder that on a recent trip to a hipster coffee shop in central London I was regarded with incredulity and slight pity by the cashier as I searched through my purse for the correct change to pay for my kale wrap.

Stop any teenager or young adult on the street and most won’t have more than a couple of pounds on them.

    Coffee shop automationGETTY

Coffee shops could soon require little to no contact with human employees

A proportion of total spending cash is declining and it will continue to decline

    Tim Richards, Consult Hyperion

They’ve used their phone to pay for the bus or train, they flash their phone again to buy things and if they get an Uber home, the fare is automatically deducted from their bank account by the app.

In fact, the next generation of children won’t even know what physical money is, Apple boss Tim Cook predicted recently.

So are we moving closer to the death of cash, as some suggest?

“It’s true that as a proportion of total spending cash is declining and it will continue to decline,” says Tim Richards of Consult Hyperion, specialist consultants on payment technology.

But he thinks reports of its death are exaggerated. “Cash will always retain a role,” he predicts.

“But there’s a huge generational gap. Millennials who were brought up with the internet and smartphones just don’t carry cash and don’t like it. When I give my 16-year-old daughter cash I have to take it to the bank myself so she can then spend it on her card. I still carry cash but find I’m increasingly using other payment methods, too. If I take money from the bank it can still be in my wallet two-and-a-half weeks later.”

You only have to look at Scandinavia to see the future. In Sweden, barely 20 per cent of consumer transactions now involve cash and the number of krona in circulation has fallen by nearly half since 2009. It’s not unusual to find hotels, bars and cafés that no longer accept cash and most retailers say they anticipate phasing it out completely by 2030.

So what are people using instead? “Tap and pay” with a debit or credit card is popular in Sweden, as it is here. But it’s also normal for small traders there to carry mobile card readers so you can pay them with a tap of your card.

“I was in Scandinavia a few weeks ago and there was a guy busking,” says Tim. “I indicated I didn’t have any money on me – but then he whipped out an iZettle contactless card reader. Of course, I then felt I had to hand over my card.”

    SwedenGETTY

Sweden is embracing the contactless revolution, with now only 20 per cent of transactions being cash

But the method experts predict will one day dwarf even cards is paying by phone.

In Sweden, Apple Pay or Android Pay are popular but they’ve also gone a step further and use phones to make instant payments to friends with an app called Swish.

You can transfer money instantly to anyone you want – all you need is their mobile number (as long as they also have the app on their phone).

More than half the population now uses Swish to pay at school fetes, flea markets, for babysitting or cleaning services and to divvy up restaurant bills with friends.

Not many people know it yet but we already have our own version of Swish.

Paym allows you to use your mobile to transfer money to people instantly and four million have so far signed up.

Things are about to become even more mind-bending, too, with the launch of conversational payments. That’s when you can pay someone directly when you’re in the middle of a conversation on a messaging app, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.

Facebook has just started rolling out its new service in the UK. Whenever it senses you’re talking about paying for something during a conversation, it’ll give you a nudge to remind you about the service.

And if you think it sounds a bit Orwellian, then you’re not alone.

“Some of these developments do sound a bit Big Brother-y and scary,” admits Tim. “But if you talk to Millennials about this they are not really bothered about the loss of privacy and anonymity. They like the convenience.”

    PaymGETTY

Paym aims to streamline contactless paying with instant transfer

Governments also prefer cashless transactions, he points out, because cash is the primary source of small-scale tax evasion.

However, it’s the loss of anonymity we should all be thinking about before we surrender to a cashless society, says Jacques Peretti, author of Done: The Secret Deals That Are Changing Our World.

“We are not handing over our cash. What we hand over instead is every last detail of our lives from a preference for Chinese over Indian food to whether you surf or knit or go on holiday to the Caribbean or Canvey Island.”

Lancaster University’s Dr Joe Deville, an expert in consumer behaviour and debt, agrees, “Every digital transaction leaves a trace, which provides an incredibly rich source of data about intimate details of your life – your patterns of behaviour, where you shop, what you buy and when.”

    Tax evasion cashGETTY

Governments prefer the contactless system, with cash being primarily easier to avoid tax on

He admits there’s no evidence such data is currently being used – but companies could use it to assess credit ratings or to prove you’re frittering away too much at Costa Coffee to qualify for a mortgage.

Then there’s the marketing potential. If Starbucks could see you were buying a Costa coffee every day, would it target you with a blizzard of special deals? Already the Dunkin’ Donuts app in the US tracks people and if they walk past a branch more than three times without going in, it pings them with special offers.

It’s not the only reason to fear the decline of cash, either. Research shows we spend more with cards than with hard cash. Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology proved that students bidding on tickets for a sold-out basketball match were prepared to spend twice as much with a card as with cash.

“It suggests the psychological cost of spending a dollar on a credit card is only 50 cents,” said neuro-psychologist Drazen Prelec. His research found a particular neural pathway in the brain lit up when paying with cash – the “flinch” moment that stops us overspending.

It’s not surprising if you think about it, says Dr Deville.

“There’s a variety of moments during a cash transaction when you have to confront your own spending – getting cash out from the cashpoint, putting it in your wallet, getting the money out from your wallet at the till and counting it, handling the change. All those processes remind you that you’re spending money.”

And the fact that you can see the money physically disappearing from your wallet puts a natural brake on your spending. Studies also show people who pay with cards tend to forget they’ve spent that money, he says.

So 3,500 years after the introduction of Britain’s first coins, the wonky and primitive-looking Celtic stater, maybe it’s more than just nostalgia that should stop us embracing the glorious future of a cashless society.

Huawei and Telus test fixed 5G in homes, paving way for Canadian rollout https://briefnews.eu/huawei-and-telus-test-fixed-5g-in-homes-paving-way-for-canadian-rollout/ https://briefnews.eu/huawei-and-telus-test-fixed-5g-in-homes-paving-way-for-canadian-rollout/#respond Wed, 14 Feb 2018 15:36:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/huawei-and-telus-test-fixed-5g-in-homes-paving-way-for-canadian-rollout/

Facing restrictions in the United States due to national security concerns, China’s leading smartphone maker Huawei announced today that Canadian carrier Telus is live-testing Huawei 5G equipment in Vancouver homes, setting the stage for a future commercial launch of fixed 5G service in Canada. The companies’ in-home testing is said to be the first of its kind in North America, bringing 5G from the “lab to the living room.”

According to Huawei, the tests are based upon new wireless Customer Premise Equipment (CPE), giving users a “fiber-like experience with their home network.” The CPE relies upon 28GHz mmWave frequency broadcasting, next-generation signaling technologies, and Massive MIMO antennas to deliver over 2Gbps speeds. Huawei expects that mmWave technology will enable cost-effective 5G coverage in neighborhoods and small communities, increasing accessibility to urban and suburban customers.

The race to quickly deploy “fixed 5G” — in-home or in-business wireless service as a replacement for wired broadband — is now a two-country competition in North America, as Verizon has announced plans to bring fixed 5G service to several U.S. cities this year, beginning with proprietary, non-standards compliant 5G hardware. By comparison, Huawei says its CPE hardware complies with 3GPP’s global 5G standard, though its footprint is currently limited to Telus employees, and is not on the same city-wide scale as Verizon’s 2018 rollout. Telus has previously said that it expects 5G to be commercially available in 2020, with Vancouver residents getting “early access” to some 5G technologies.

Huawei’s announcement comes at a time when U.S. carriers and consumers are being actively warned by government agencies to avoid using Huawei cellular hardware based on security fears. Last month, members of Congress pushed carriers including AT&T to cut business ties with Huawei, and yesterday, six U.S. intelligence agencies told citizens not to use Huawei or ZTE phones. Each of the Chinese manufacturers is said to have covert ties to China’s government, risking the security of data transmitted through both their mobile devices and networking gear.

Randi Zuckerberg: ‘Smaller cities are paving the way for entrepreneurs’ https://briefnews.eu/randi-zuckerberg-smaller-cities-are-paving-the-way-for-entrepreneurs/ https://briefnews.eu/randi-zuckerberg-smaller-cities-are-paving-the-way-for-entrepreneurs/#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 14:16:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/randi-zuckerberg-smaller-cities-are-paving-the-way-for-entrepreneurs/

Randi Zuckerberg, the technology executive and entrepreneur behind Zuckerberg Media, doesn’t do things in the traditional way. A strong advocate for STEM education, particularly for females, Zuckerberg has firsthand experienced being an outlier — she describes how, in her early days in Silicon Valley, she was often the only woman in a room full of tech executives or investors. She’s since launched a slew of endeavors, including a book and TV show, aimed at getting young girls interested in science or technology.

True to form, when it came time for her to pick a location for her latest education-focused venture, she looked beyond the traditional tech coasts. Zuckerberg was planning a restaurant pop-up, which she named Sue’s Tech Kitchen, that aimed to serve as a high-tech Chuck E. Cheese. With stations that used edible treats for 3D-printing, coding, and playing with liquid nitrogen, families at the pop-up would be able to get their hands dirty with food, all in the name of exploring science and technology.

Despite her business roots in Silicon Valley and current home in New York, Zuckerberg chose to launch the beta of the pop-up restaurant in the Innovation District of Chattanooga, TN. Zuckerberg says she was impressed by the commitment of Chattanooga’s startup leaders to help entrepreneurs, and points towards smaller cities as being the next drivers of innovation.

Zuckerberg shares more on the importance of exposing children, especially girls, to technology, why she thinks the Southern tech scene is thriving, and what’s next for her sweet pop-up venture.

When did you first realize there was a gender gap in the tech industry?

When I was working in Silicon Valley I was often the only woman in any given room at any given time. And if I went to any kind of investor meeting or met with venture capitalists, then I was the only woman in a boardroom full of men who couldn’t relate to anything feminine. They would often shut down ideas before they heard the entire pitch because they couldn’t see a market outside of their own male mindset.

It was actually inspiring because it forced to me to take matters in my own hands.

When did you first decide to dedicate your time and many of your passion projects to closing that gap?

There was no lightning bolt moment when I first decided to focus on closing the gender gap. It was more that I was seeing STEM being promoted without young girls and women as part of the equation. Since our passions usually begin as children, girls need to be given the same opportunities to fall in love with technology and engineering as boys do. That starts by having positive female role models that they could relate to, so I started creating them myself. And the rest, they say, is HER-story.

In your opinion, what deters children from pursuing STEM skills and careers?

For girls, I think it’s from the lack of role models — where’s the female ‘Dexter’s Laboratory’ or Jill Nal the Science Gal? Girls need to see someone that looks like them to want to be like them. It’s also very important that both parents and teachers have the proper learning to teach STEM skills to begin with. So we need more STEM-trained teachers in these fields as well.

How is Sue’s Tech Kitchen making technology and science more fun for kids?

At Sue’s we’ve taken family dining and made it interactive, inclusive, and fun for everyone. Kids (and adults) are having these hands-on experiences where they can actually create their own 3D printed food, code robots using candy, and program the design of the dining table. My hope is that these moments of learning and fun, education and sharing — the intersection of growth and enjoyment — sticks with these kids, encouraging them to seek out other STEM experiences.

It’s quite possible that one of the many children who visited Sue’s could one day find a cure for cancer or colonize the moon. It’s important that kids get exposed to the possibilities first.

You launched STK in Chattanooga, not one of the more “traditional” tech hubs like Silicon Valley or New York. What fueled your decision to bring the pop-up there first?

Chattanooga is a beacon of industry that is often overlooked because it’s not one of the more popular coastal cities. But I say people are missing out! In 2010, Chattanooga claimed the title of first municipality to install a citywide gigabit network. Seven years later Chattanooga has added an extra $ 850 million to the local economy, despite the loss of three major factories in the area. Plus, an entire 140-acre section of downtown Chattanooga has been designated the Innovation District. Startups, nonprofits and government entities work side by side, making Chattanooga the perfect city to launch an innovative and forward-thinking company.

How do you see second or third-tier tech cities, like those in the South, contributing towards the tech industry as a whole?

Major coastal cities are becoming too expensive for individuals to afford, much less startups, which makes smaller cities much more desirable. Office space is cheaper, and colleges in the area can help drive innovation through its local talent.

Plus, smaller cities are paving the way for entrepreneurs. Just look at cities like Detroit, which has 50 percent more venture-backed startups then it did three years ago. Or Cincinnati, who ranked Number 7 in 10 Cities Secretly Great for Tech College Grads’ by DataFox. And companies in Indianapolis — a city better known for manufacturing — has planned on creating almost 4,000 new jobs this year, with two-thirds in the tech sector!

    What is next for STK?

We have some very exciting plans brewing. We’re currently working with collaborators, sponsors and idea makers who want to help Sue’s tech-infused family dinners tour the country. Without giving too much away, let’s just say I’m chipping away at that gender gap one pop-up restaurant at a time.

Paving the way for a lithium battery that uses an asphalt electrode https://briefnews.eu/paving-the-way-for-a-lithium-battery-that-uses-an-asphalt-electrode/ https://briefnews.eu/paving-the-way-for-a-lithium-battery-that-uses-an-asphalt-electrode/#respond Fri, 06 Oct 2017 22:00:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/paving-the-way-for-a-lithium-battery-that-uses-an-asphalt-electrode/

The asphalt-derived material before (left) and after it has been coated with lithium. (credit: Tour Group, Rice University)

Most of the batteries we use, from our cell phones to our cars, rely on using lithium ions. As a result, their capacity is largely a product of how much lithium you can stuff into a given volume. Obviously, using a pure lithium electrode would provide the highest density possible. But there has been no way to control where the lithium ends up as a battery goes through charge/discharge cycles. The typical result is a set of lithium metal spines that short the whole system out.

As a result, a lot of effort has been put into finding other materials that can incorporate lithium into their structure. This lowers the total lithium content but keeps the battery from shorting out. However, a new paper suggests an intriguing alternative, describing a material that ensures lithium forms a smooth coating on its surface with no spines. What’s this wonder material? A slightly modified version of asphalt.

    Pavement from a chemistry perspective

Although the term “asphalt” is often used as a general term for blacktop pavement, it has a technical meaning as well: a viscous, semi-liquid hydrocarbon that’s one of the components of the paving material. There are several different types of asphalt, but the team here worked with something called gilsonite, which is close enough to a solid to be mined. Like other hydrocarbons, it’s a complex mix of molecules rather than a pure substance, and it contains things like nitrogen and sulfur due to its origin in biological material.

    The Black Republican Paving the Way … for Kanye https://briefnews.eu/the-black-republican-paving-the-way-for-kanye/ https://briefnews.eu/the-black-republican-paving-the-way-for-kanye/#respond Thu, 09 Mar 2017 07:06:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-black-republican-paving-the-way-for-kanye/

It was the MTV Music Video Awards and Kanye West had just uttered the words lingering on every celebrity gazillionaire’s mind after watching the Donald’s run in the summer of 2015: “I have decided in 2020 to run for president.” As West delivered his sermon from Los Angeles, a little-known conservative texted his political group chat. Why not line the path for Yeezus?

“Nobody objected to it,” says Eugene Craig III today — or, perhaps, took it seriously. That was all the permission the young Baltimore native needed to register the “Ready for Kanye” PAC, in a move as brash as the man he purported to fund. Craig, a Black entrepreneur and Rand Paul-esque Republican, is just as willing to shout “Black Lives Matter” as he is to bash Obamacare. Like West, he thrills in what seem to be contradictions in the public eye and excels at grabbing headlines. Hours after registering Ready for Kanye, Craig had received 27 media requests, a number he says crested into 130 radio, print and television interviews by the end of the week.

Then a mere vice-chair for the Maryland Republican Party, Craig has since become a political consultant and two candidates he advised won primaries last year. He’s also the owner of a business that free-enterprise and social justice warriors alike can appreciate: the Buy Black app, which connects customers to locally-owned African American businesses. Now he’s plotting a path forward to relevance in a state that typically doesn’t give much credence to conservatives. “He opens some doors that traditionally haven’t been open to Republicans,” says Dirk Haire, chairman of the state GOP, noting that the Ready for Kanye PAC was received well in typically inhospitable sources. “We’re getting positive press from Rolling Stone: Why is that a bad thing?”

While some Republicans “understand blackness,” many “not only don’t have a point of reference, but they outright reject it.”

Craig is over the culture wars, and would have the party focus on its strength, in his view: sound fiscal conservatism. He may be a glimpse at the future face of the Republican Party, that mostly under-30 generation with less cultural moorings than their parents. Whether his own party is ready for that yet is another question – one that Craig will have to answer as he presents an uncomfortable fit for both the left and his colleagues on the right. “Black Democrats are skeptical of you because you’re different from the norm,” Craig says, and while some Republicans “understand blackness,” many “not only don’t have a point of reference, but they outright reject it,” he adds. As Haire puts it, “not everyone has appreciated” the Kanye-loving activist, or his liberal-friendly stances, like an insistence on greater accountability for police shootings. Yet despite all that headline-grabbing bluster, Craig is “a solutionist,” says Trump transition team member and former RNC senior advisor Elroy Sailor: “He cuts through all the chatter,” the prominent Black Republican adds.

Over chicken wings at the Tilted Kilt, the Hooters of Irish pubs, Craig explains his lassez-faire philosophies as a scantily-clad blonde in plaid delivers his meal. His ideology is shaped by libertarian minds, like Michigan Congressman Justin Amash. The former athlete — he played football, basketball and track in high school— learns strategy from his weekly online poker habit, “my only sport at this point.”

On policy, Craig’s eager to talk criminal justice reform and charter schools. The son of a Veterans Affairs doctor and microbiologist mother, Craig never attended public school. And while he opposes abortion, he thinks the GOP should focus on family planning and prenatal support services rather than chasing a Roe vs. Wade overturn. He also believes Maryland Republicans should lead the charge on legalizing marijuana — a “revenue booster.” If conservatives don’t get on board with what he sees as an inevitability, “every young person in the damn state comes out for it – and they don’t go for Republicans.” That tactical mindset will matter in a midterm set to decide the fate of Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and of the Republican-minority statehouse, whichsaw historic GOP gains in 2014. “That’s only going to go up, if we play our cards right,” Craig says, but “the party has to rebrand itself as something for more than old white folk longing for a time that’s gone past.” The Maryland Democratic Party declined comment.

That doesn’t mean Craig lacks a relationship to political history, though his inspiration is more recent: South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Ashley Bell, a Trump administration staffer and former RNC strategist, and even channels. As a “26-year-old Black guy who drives a Mercedes Benz,” he particularly enjoyed Scott’s speech, delivered from the Senate floor last July, about being pulled over by the cops. His point: It’s not anti-conservative to notice discrimination — a message that may assist him if he shoots for Maryland’s State Senate District 8, covering White Marsh and sharing the county in which Freddie Gray died in April of 2015 (He technically hasn’t announced a run yet, but… “it’s going to happen,” he says.)

For now, he’s paying the bills with political consultancy gigs and the Buy Black app. He’s handed over the reigns to “Ready for Kanye,” which purposefully didn’t raise any money, in case they had to return it to an unwilling West, who did not respond to comment for this piece. The Grand Old Party “wanted my head on a platter,” he says, for pushing what might be read either as postmodern political culture jamming of the sort that Trump, West, the Kardashians, and Breitbart’s Milo Yiannopolous excel at. Craig figures “a party that can take Donald Trump seriously can take Kanye West seriously.” But he thinks he can afford to poke a couple of bears. “I get some leeway for being a Black Republican.”
