  • CommonBond's refinancing business took a massive hit amid the pandemic's interest and payment pause.
  • It effectively exited the business in June and pivoted to loans for residential solar panels.
  • The company's CEO David Klein announced the decision in a LinkedIn post.

Student loan lending company CommonBond quietly announced it will be "winding down" its operations after its core businesses saw a hit during the pandemic.

CommonBond cofounder and CEO David Klein said in a LinkedIn post that despite shifting to focus on residential solar panel loans, the impact of the student loan payment pause made it hard to continue the business.

"The story of what has led us to this point starts with Covid," Klein said. "When the pandemic hit, our Student business took a hit. Half of the Refinance market went away as the government paused interest and payments for all federal student holders. More than two years later, that policy is still in place."

CommonBond launched in 2012 to help originate student loans at lower rates and offered refinancing services.

But during the pandemic, the US government paused federal student loan repayments, a move that was extended until President Joe Biden approved a plan to cancel up to $ 20,000 in student loans in early September.

In June this year, CommonBond officially announced it would formally expand into lending for people who want to buy and install solar panels on their homes. It began offering loans for solar panels in the third quarter of 2021 and, by 2022, was on pace to lend $ 1 billion to customers. At the time, the company said it was a logical step for them as many of its student loan customers buy a house within a few years of refinancing with CommonBond, and there is strong interest in helping curb climate change.

Klein said in his LinkedIn post the solar lending business "is where we were growing quickly," but ultimately, CommonBond's solar financing model was still scaling up and needed to access new capital.

"Unfortunately, we couldn't pivot the entirety of the business fast enough," he said.

CommonBond did not respond to a request for comment.

Pregnant pause no problem for WNBL players https://briefnews.eu/pregnant-pause-no-problem-for-wnbl-players/ https://briefnews.eu/pregnant-pause-no-problem-for-wnbl-players/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 18:12:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/pregnant-pause-no-problem-for-wnbl-players/ SHE can’t imagine leaving baby Ava Mirella for even a second just yet but former Opal Laura Hodges will likely be one of the first beneficiaries of a new parental and pregnancy care policy introduced to the WNBL for the first time this season.

The 34-year-old former Australian great and Adelaide Lightning player gave birth to her first child on October 15 but is already plotting a return to the court.

WALKING WOUNDED: Tahlia’s nasty head knock

COMEBACK: Flames ready to ignite after close call

“She watched her first game with me on TV the other day but I have to admit she did fall asleep as I was explaining the rules,’’ Hodges said.

The WNBL’s first Parental and Pregnancy Care Policy will help the new mum reignite her career as an elite basketballer – potentially by next season.

The Australian Basketballers’ Association (ABA) and the WNBL announced the

establishment of the policy on Wednesday which includes provision for mothers with children up to four to have access to a qualified carer or player elected support personnel for all away trip or for pregnant players to pause their contracts.

The policy follows in the wake of the Minimum Player Conditions Agreement reached last year.

FELICITY PALMATEER: I used to wonder does my life meant less

FAMILY AFFAIRS: Jessica Fox has special company at awards

“This will just make it so much easier for players to get back if that’s what they want,’’ said Hodges, who maintains it is crucial players are not rushed back into sport before they are ready.

“It is important that the league is meeting the standards expected in the modern day world of women’s sport.

“Having a child is not a career ender.’’

Inspiring Hodges, who admits a week ago even the thought of walking up stairs was daunting, is close friend Renae Ingles, who returned to elite netball after giving birth to twins.

An old teammate of Ingles, former Australian player Bec Bulley, was the first netballer to return from retirement after starting a family when netball introduced its own policy at the start of Super Netball in 2017.

WNBL boss Sally Phillips said the policy was important for the longest running elite women’s league in Australia

“I am thrilled that all key WNBL stakeholders have been able to come together and recognise the importance around the introduction of this policy,’’ she said.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with the Players Association and WNBL clubs as we all continue take positive strides forward in providing our players with the opportunity to become fully professional athletes.’’

FCC presses pause on review of the T-Mobile and Sprint merger https://briefnews.eu/fcc-presses-pause-on-review-of-the-t-mobile-and-sprint-merger/ https://briefnews.eu/fcc-presses-pause-on-review-of-the-t-mobile-and-sprint-merger/#respond Tue, 11 Sep 2018 20:57:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fcc-presses-pause-on-review-of-the-t-mobile-and-sprint-merger/

The FCC just announced it’s “pausing the Commission’s informal 180-day transaction shot clock” on the merger between Sprint and T-Mobile. The reasoning for this apparently comes from material submitted only recently by the companies, that break down a planned network engineering model, as well as T-Mobile’s “Build 9” business model explaining the deal’s financial backing. According to the FCC’s letter, it didn’t get all of the information about this until September 5th and is still awaiting additional economic modeling from T-Mobile, so it needs more time for staff and third parties to review everything.

Both companies submitted their initial pitch to the FCC back in June, and it’s unclear how long a full review will take. After years on on-and-off talks, in April the two announced their plan to combine forces just as 5G wireless technology takes over.

Miracle workers which hit the ageing pause button https://briefnews.eu/miracle-workers-which-hit-the-ageing-pause-button/ https://briefnews.eu/miracle-workers-which-hit-the-ageing-pause-button/#respond Thu, 24 May 2018 02:38:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/miracle-workers-which-hit-the-ageing-pause-button/

We have always believed, when it comes to anti-ageing, that less is most definitely more.

So we’re big fans of this summer’s hottest new beauty trend that promises the most subtle and natural results.

Dubbed “slow motion ageing”, the aim isn’t to dramatically alter your appearance but to slow down the hands of time using innovative technology and treatments to shape, tighten and lift.

With the right approach you should be able to press pause on ageing and look the same at 65 as you did at 45.

From face-lifting procedures to the latest laser line eraser, don’t miss our guide to this exciting new trend.

AT THE CLINIC

NO TRACE FACE AND NECK LIFT

Instalift promises to be one of this summer’s most exciting new treatments.

It targets all the major signs of ageing, tightening loose skin and softening lines and wrinkles.

The procedure is carried out in two stages.

The first involves Innopen, a new motorised microneedling treatment that creates micro-channels in the skin.

Serum that contains a potent blend of growth factors and stem cells is then applied, which encourages skin cells to regenerate.

As the skin repairs itself over the following weeks, new collagen is formed, plumping and tightening the complexion.

The second stage focuses on neck and jawline rejuvenation using high intensity focused ultrasound.

a handheld device delivers a series of ultrasound pulses to the underlying connective tissue in the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin.

Cost: From £1,000

KNIFE FREE LID LIFT

While there are plenty of creams and treatments to tackle under-eye bags, until recently the only way to address sagging skin on the eyelids was by going under the knife.

However, Plexr offers a non-surgical solution.

This high-tech treatment uses tiny blasts of plasma energy to shrink and tighten the skin.

Topical anaesthetic is used to numb the area and there may be some puf ness and redness for a couple of days after treatment.

Cost: From £2,000

LASER LINE ERASER

Blast away pigmentation marks and smooth skin with Picoway Resolve, a fractional laser that can transform the complexion.

This high-tech laser uses ultra-short pulses that are less damaging to the skin’s surface, meaning less recovery time is needed than after traditional laser treatment.

Cost: From £300

Amazon puts Seattle expansion on pause over tax proposal https://briefnews.eu/amazon-puts-seattle-expansion-on-pause-over-tax-proposal/ https://briefnews.eu/amazon-puts-seattle-expansion-on-pause-over-tax-proposal/#respond Thu, 03 May 2018 13:23:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazon-puts-seattle-expansion-on-pause-over-tax-proposal/

Amazon is extremely unhappy over a Seattle tax proposal that would set it back between $ 20 to $ 30 million a year that it halted its major expansion plans in its home city. According to The New York Times, the e-commerce giant has put the construction planning of a building it was going to build downtown later this year on pause. It’s also reconsidering its plans to occupy a building that’s already being built — both of those decisions jeopardize 7,000 jobs in Seattle.

The city’s tax proposal would charge employers in Seattle that make $ 20 million or more annually in taxable gross receipts — and we all know Amazon makes a lot more than that — $ 500 per employee. Seattle’s goal is to raise $ 75 million from taxes, three-fourths of which will be used to build 1,800 affordable housing units in the city. Authorities will then use the rest to fund services for the homeless. Spokesperson Drew Herdener said Amazon has halted all construction planning “pending the outcome of the head tax vote by City Council.”

According to city council member Mike O’Brien, Amazon didn’t leave room for discussion when it informed the local government that it’s putting all its construction plans on hold. It simply told them what it was going to do. The tech titan has been lobbying behind the scenes against the proposal for quite some time, likely because the $ 500-per-head tax would transform into a payroll tax by 2021 and could cost the company significantly more than $ 20 to $ 30 million. Besides, various locations across the US had already offered it tax breaks to become the site of its second headquarters.

If it decides to back the proposal and pay those taxes, though, we doubt $ 20 to $ 30 million would hurt the company deeply. It reported $ 51 billion in sales for the first quarter of 2018, 43 percent more than the same period last year. Amazon chief Jeff Bezos himself is worth $ 131 billion and spends $ 1 billion a year on his private space endeavor Blue Origin.

Council member O’Brien pointed out that while Amazon isn’t solely to blame for the increasing homelessness in the city, the company and Seattle’s booming tech industry as a whole are driving up costs of living and driving people out of their homes. Based on an annual report by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2017, Seattle now has the third largest homeless population in the country after New York and Los Angeles. City officials are struggling to find a balance, and they believe this tax proposal is the answer. “I need to run a city that has room for prosperous businesses,” O’Brien said, “but doesn’t do it at the expense of people getting pushed into poverty.”

Following Fatal Crash, Some Press Pause on Self-Driving Tests https://briefnews.eu/following-fatal-crash-some-press-pause-on-self-driving-tests/ https://briefnews.eu/following-fatal-crash-some-press-pause-on-self-driving-tests/#respond Wed, 21 Mar 2018 16:49:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/following-fatal-crash-some-press-pause-on-self-driving-tests/ AZ: Self-Driving Autonomous Vehicles In Arizona

–

In the aftermath of a fatal crash earlier this week between an Uber self-driving vehicle and a pedestrian, industry leaders and city officials across the country are putting their own autonomous-vehicle testing programs on hold so they can ponder the effect on the vehicles’ onboard safety drivers and consider the road ahead for this fledgling technology.

–

On Sunday night in Tempe, Arizona, an Uber self-driving vehicle operating in autonomous mode struck Elaine Herzberg, 49, who had stepped into the roadway. She was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Uber has since suspended its self-driving-vehicle testing across its operations in Tempe, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, and Toronto.

–

Although it had no role in the deadly incident (the Uber test vehicle was a Volvo XC90), Toyota said Tuesday it will “temporarily pause” testing of its self-driving systems on public roads in Michigan and California. The stoppage involves Toyota test vehicles operating with the company’s Chauffeur autonomous-mode capability, which handles responsibility for all driving tasks.

–

“We feel the incident in Tempe may have an emotional effect on our test drivers,” Toyota said in a statement. “This timeout is meant to give them time to come to a sense of balance about the inherent risks of their jobs. We are monitoring the situation and plan to resume testing at an appropriate time.”

–

Manufacturers were not the only ones suspending autonomous-vehicle testing. As in Arizona, Massachusetts permits autonomous-vehicle testing via an executive order issued by the state’s governor. But in Boston, city officials wanted time Tuesday to contemplate the ramifications of ongoing testing within the city’s borders. The commissioner of the city’s transportation department, Gina Fiandaca, asked two companies testing there to pause operations. They agreed.

–

“As a precautionary measure, we have temporarily asked NuTonomy and Optimus Ride to pause their autonomous-vehicle testing programs on public streets in Boston,” Fiandaca wrote. “The Boston transportation department will be working with both companies to review their safety procedures to ensure each program can move forward.”

–

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board examine the Volvo XC90 which struck a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday night.

Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board examine the Volvo XC90 that struck a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona, on Sunday night.

–

In Tempe, local law-enforcement officials have been joined by teams from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in investigating the crash. Those teams have reviewed video footage of the crash captured by cameras mounted in the vehicle and have begun collecting electronic data stored on the vehicle, according to the Tempe Police Department. As of late Tuesday, a spokesperson for the department said that no fault has been determined in the crash.

–

In the meantime, Tempe’s mayor, Mark Mitchell, has issued a statement in support of Uber’s decision to pause its testing.

–

–

“The city of Tempe has been supportive of autonomous-vehicle testing because of the innovation and promise the technology may offer in many areas, including transportation options for disabled residents and seniors,” he said. “Testing must occur safely. All indications we have had in the past show that traffic laws are being obeyed by the companies testing here. Our city leadership and Tempe police will pursue any and all answers to what happened in order to ensure safety moving forward.”

–

It is unclear when Uber may begin testing there again.

“The US Mission in Turkey has resumed processing visas on a limited basis,” the embassy said Monday, according to an email seen by Reuters. The Turkish government is expected to reciprocate, potentially resolving a diplomatic standoff that began a month ago, following the arrest of a local employee of a US Consulate. The move comes on the eve of Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim’s visit to Washington.

‘Worst place on earth’: UN urges US-led coalition to pause airstrikes to spare Raqqa civilians https://briefnews.eu/worst-place-on-earth-un-urges-us-led-coalition-to-pause-airstrikes-to-spare-raqqa-civilians/ https://briefnews.eu/worst-place-on-earth-un-urges-us-led-coalition-to-pause-airstrikes-to-spare-raqqa-civilians/#respond Thu, 24 Aug 2017 20:38:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/worst-place-on-earth-un-urges-us-led-coalition-to-pause-airstrikes-to-spare-raqqa-civilians/ The situation in Raqqa, Syria is getting worse, with basic services “at all-time low” and thousands of civilians unable to get out of the besieged terrorist stronghold, the UN says, urging the US-led coalition to halt the bombing to allow people to escape.

“On Raqqa, our urging today from the UN side to the members of the Humanitarian Task Force, including the members of the Coalition that is helping retake Raqqa, is that they need to do whatever is possible to make it possible for people to escape Raqqa,” Jan Egeland, Special Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Syria, said at a press briefing in Geneva on Thursday.

Some 20,000 civilians remain trapped in dire humanitarian conditions in Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) held areas of the Raqqa city, he claimed.

“The five neighborhoods now held by the Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL], of the city of Raqqa, is an area where the needs are beyond belief and the protection concerns are acute,” Egeland said.

The civilians trapped in the city have virtually no access to basic services, including safe water and food, and are surviving on food they stored up earlier, David Swanson, public information officer from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, told RT.

“The humanitarian situation – up to 25,000 civilians still trapped in Raqqa – is nothing short of dire. Access to safe drinking water, food and other basic services is at an all-time low with many residents relying on food they had stored up earlier to survive,” Swanson said, adding that the only functional hospital in the city remains in IS hands.

In the past few days, multiple media and humanitarian organizations are reporting mounting civilian casualties in the city. On Tuesday, the UN expressed“deep concerns” over the reports, urging all parties “to spare and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure.”

An escape from the besieged terrorist stronghold, however, seems almost impossible due to the intensive fighting, shelling by the mostly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and airstrikes by the US-led coalition, Egeland said.

“There is heavy shelling from the surrounding and encircling SDF forces and there are constant air raids from the coalition. So, the civilian causalities are large and there seem to be no real escape for these civilians,” Egeland said, urging the coalition to “think of possibilities, pauses or otherwise that might facilitate the escape of civilians.”

“I cannot think of a worse place on earth now than in these five neighborhoods and for these 20,000 people,” the UN official added.

As a way to ease the people’s plight, Egeland cited the example of the Aleppo liberation, when the Syrian Army and Russia announced humanitarian pauses multiple times to allow civilians the chance to escape the crossfire and provide much-needed aid.

The situation, however, is more complicated in Raqqa, as IS terrorists do not want to communicate with the besieging forces at all, according to Egeland. The lack of such communication, however, cannot be used as an excuse to do nothing to help the trapped civilians, he added. According to the official, “this is time to try anything to allow their safe escape,” however pointing out that many civilians simply refuse to leave due to fear of terrorists, but also from “shelling” and “bombardment” of US-led coalition and forces its backs.
